im a heterosexual dude and i agree

i think its at least 50% that awesome uniform though.

[–]Wollff 3 points4 points ago

It must be hell to put on such a thing.

I would probably choke myself within three steps, by being caught in an inescapable net of cords and tassels...

Which again goes to show that I will never be Winston Churchill.

[–]drbooberry 14 points15 points ago

that's an amazing photo you coupled with the quote.

[–]razihk 12 points13 points ago

Is that really churchill in youth?

[–]fetchlycosfetch 2 points3 points ago

yes.

[–]lediablerouge 8 points9 points ago

Impressively autobiographical quote.

[–]TheNecromancer 6 points7 points ago

Seems there's some interest in the photo. This was taken in 1895 when he just joined the 4th Hussars, aged 21. In the same year, he travelled to Cuba to observe and report on the conflict there, and in 1896 was deployed to the Indian frontiers with the 4th Hussars.

The dude also escaped a Boer war prison camp, travelled 300 miles to salvation and returned to the lines, participating in the taking of Pretoria and the surrender of 52 Boer prison guards. Legend.

That's an accurate description of most people on /r/atheism

[–]Donitee -1 points0 points ago

More random /r/atheism bashing, classic. /r/atheism is not much different from most popular subreddits.

In fact this quote is an accurate description of practically every subreddit be it /r/politics, /r/Libertarian, /r/socialism, /r/trees... People get together and talk about their interests, this is the definition of a circlejerk. Coupled with a strong sense of affiliation to atheism (oftentimes) caused by orthodox religious upbringing and you got your "fanatic".

The important factor regarding the immaturity of people in /r/atheism is that the bigger the subreddit the lower the quality of content. You can't expect intellectual discussion in subreddits with more than 100k subscribers. Just unsubscribe and shut the fuck about it, I'm subscribed to /r/atheism and it's not even on my front page most of the time.

I agreed with you until the last paragraph. big and good are not inversely proportionate, they are independent.

Most of the music subreddits for example.

[–]Based_World 0 points1 point ago

Sir you are forgetting that this is the internet and if they are entitled to circlejerk around atheism then I can make fun of them whenever the fuck I want.

"I do not admit... that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia... by the fact that a stronger race, a higher grade race... has come in and taken its place." Churchill to Palestine Royal Commission, 1937

They're just butthurt

[–]HarryFlash -1 points0 points ago

He was not perfect, and had some views which when looked upon in a 21st century light look abhorrent...But it is generally more conducive to judge historical characters by the morality of their own time, and many people across the world at that time would have shared those views

You have to remember that this was a time that the general scientific world supported Eugenics (although Churchill didn't support it)- every developed country at the time, with the exceptions of the UK and Catholic countries, had some sort of Eugenics policy.

It is too simplistic to judge someone on a viewpoint that was pretty commonplace at the time, but now looks disgusting. You could find a quote or action from everyone in history that would now be viewed as not acceptable

[–]poohbarium 1 point2 points ago

or they are just italian?

[–]scdozer435 0 points1 point ago

Fanaticism and immaturity seem to have a lot in common.

[–]Hamlet7768 0 points1 point ago

I also like:

"Fanaticism consists of redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim."

[–]ersatzgaucho 0 points1 point ago

what does that kid know?

[–]Urinalboy -2 points-1 points ago

Apart from the fact that he was a huge racist and hated muslims.

[–]EliaIsAGiraffesName 0 points1 point ago

Much like how Winston Churchill was fanatical about keeping India part of the British Empire and refusing to acknowledge the independence movement?
