I never understand how my brain can code the entire setting and scenario, but forget to add the "sprint" function

[–]HolgerBier 53 points54 points ago

Will be patched in Humans 1.1

[–]ManOfTheTrees 6 points7 points ago

Is there a release date for said patch?

[–]HolgerBier 20 points21 points ago

Coming 23 December. Servers might be down for a while, but hopefully nothing major.

[–]ManOfTheTrees 3 points4 points ago

Sounds good, but wouldn't down servers cause a problem with the Humans 1.0 release? How will this be addressed?

[–]ManOfTheTrees 5 points6 points ago

I have bestowed this coveted tag upon you, Sir HolgerBier

[–]ImBosman 6 points7 points ago

"bongs, waterpipes, glass p..." i loled

[–]ManOfTheTrees 3 points4 points ago

...shit. I was shopping, oops :/

[–]TheOneTonWanton 2 points3 points ago

Grasscity?

[–]BugChaser4Life 7 points8 points ago

To put it briefly, you dream during the REM phases of sleep. During that time, you brain stops releasing the neruotransmiters responsible for firing motor neurons of your somatic nervous system, which are what control your skeletal muscles, which prevents you're from moving body from moving. This state is called REM atonia. This is what you percieve as sluggish, uncoordinated movements or inability to flee. Among other things, this is a good evolutionary safety mechanism, keeping you from acting out your dreams in real life. In addition, discordance of this phase sleep with awakening can lead to sleep paralysis, where you become fully conscious but are still unable to move for several seconds to minutes after arousal.

I experiences sleep paralysis about a year ago, and all I can say is thank God for the internet, because if I hadn't happened to have read about it somewhere before I would have freaked the fuck out.

[–]littlelowcougar 0 points1 point ago

Yeah sleep paralysis is just the worst. Haven't had it for a while but used to get it anywhere from 5-20 times a year.

[–]RtreesEnt 5 points6 points ago

Yeah I never seen to run.. I have this reoccurring dream where im a giant toothpick falling down stairs in slow motion

[–]PineappleBoots 4 points5 points ago

I don't understand this. I remember reading another thread where this topic came up about a week ago.

In my dreams, I run incredibly fast, and I 'feel' much more agile and lightweight than I am in real life. I often have dreams where I am free running, or running across deserts. (and I've never been to a desert).

[–]ManOfTheTrees 9 points10 points ago

As with other people, i tend to lean forward, grab the ground, and run ape style on all 4's. You might be the exception to the rule

[–]dnew 2 points3 points ago

I always wondered if that was just me!

[–]99Faces 2 points3 points ago

me too! I'm not special at all :(

[–]BornInTheCCCP 2 points3 points ago

I have read that this is stop us from sleep walking. The parts of the brain that control motor function are just are toned down during sleep.

[–]Jucoy 0 points1 point ago

Often times it depends on how you're sleeping. I once read that if you're curled up tight or tucked into a blanket you can't run in you're dreams because your brain knows you are constrained and so it won't even let you think that you can move. If you were more sprawled out and in looser sheets you should be able to move around in you're dreams just fine. Can't provide swauce for this, it's just something i remember reading so i thought I'd throw in my two cents.

[–]tokoroth 49 points50 points ago

when ever i try to run in dreams, i cant. instead i do this strange crawl where im pulling on the grass to make myself move faster, also time is warped. Its very weird but it seems to get the job done as i always escape whats chasing me.

[–]Pitty_fap 16 points17 points ago

I love dream running. I too am often on all fours using my hands for a speed boost. That or a one leg push off is good for a couple hundred yards. If dream running was like real running exercise would be more fun

[–]kristopho 15 points16 points ago

I end up using my hands and run like a gorilla. It works though, I am a badass motherfucking gorilla runner.

[–]Steel12 7 points8 points ago

I thought I was the only one, exactly how I dream it too

[–]stubbless 8 points9 points ago

ok, is this a thing? I too thought I was the only one. But if a significant amount of people do it, that's got to mean something right? If we get enough people saying they run like a gorilla in dreams, we should AskScience why.

[–]gunnar120 2 points3 points ago

I actually just run on two legs. I can sprint wicked fast though. Like, catch up to a car on an interstate fast.

[–]NyranK 10 points11 points ago

Meh, I levitate and roll, like a wheel, about two foot off the ground. Like a special needs Superman.

[–]Corrupt_Core 3 points4 points ago

Can't stop laughing at this mental image

[–]CattyHippie 2 points3 points ago

I have the same dreams, i heard its from our evolutionary past. Kind of a link to our primal instinct. Who knows? Carl Jung knew his shit though

[–]99Faces 2 points3 points ago

this is amazing.. I do it to.. I need an explanation!

[–]Shaady 1 point2 points ago

Add me to the list. I find that I often use my hands to grab on to the ground and pull myself forward, all in slowmo of course.

[–]The_Fuckman 5 points6 points ago

Consider yourself lucky. I get paralyzed from the waist down. Worst feeling ever.

[–]tavmax 4 points5 points ago

yea dude, i get all fucked up, and everything starts feeling wrong as soon as i need to run

[–]snipsnip 3 points4 points ago

I usually push my knees with my arms for a boost. Weird...

[–]RougeTacit 5 points6 points ago

Yes, man! totally know what you mean! The thing I always find strange is what ever is chasing me, if anything is, seems to run at a normal rate; but still doesn't catch me. Anyone else?

[–]R88SHUN 4 points5 points ago

Well, thank you for making me feel like my dreams are at least slightly less fucked up. Same exact shit.

Like strong-man exhibitions where they're pulling a truck that is harnessed to their back. Lots of resistance, running on all fours but not falling forwards.

[–]LateRoses 3 points4 points ago

Whenever I run in my dreams, I run in slow motion (even though whatever is chasing me and whoever else happens to be in my dream can run at regular speed) but if I turn around and start running backwards, I can run at normal speed.

Even in my dreams this is very frustrating. I still can't tell it's a dream until after I've woken up, though.

[–]teekaysee 3 points4 points ago

the grass thing is exactly what happens to me every time i'm trying to run in a dream. for as long as i remember. that is some weird shit.

[–]infinitivity 4 points5 points ago

I know that feel, dream runner bro.

[–]CitizenFord 2 points3 points ago

I have the same thing, as soon as I start using my hands to pull on the ground, I can move pretty fast.

[–]painahimah 2 points3 points ago

Dude! I do the same thing, except I still can't get away most of the time. Glad I'm not alone in pulling myself along.

[–]StrawberryStef 2 points3 points ago

Holy shit I do that too! I can only run by pulling myself along on the grass. It's sort of like swimming on land. I do that in every dream. The other night though I was being chased in a dream and running by pulling myself along. I stopped and realized "wait, if I have to run like this, then I must be dreaming". So if I'm dreaming, then I can run normally. I tried it and it was actually pretty difficult but very cool.

[–]Thryck 1 point2 points ago

It's even worse when you need to go up stairs, feels like you're climbing a wall.

[–]IsayNigel 1 point2 points ago

holy shit that happens to other people? I seriously thought I was the only one. fuck.

[–]cb122 1 point2 points ago

Same here! I can't ever run, nor can I hit. I have lots of dreams where I'm in fights, and I can't make contact, or it's this wimpy little smack.

[–]sharpie711 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit me too, I thought I was just fucked up... I also start to pull grass to make myself move fast but sometimes if i remember correctly it starts to uproot.

[–]MaxATX 0 points1 point ago

Me too!

[–]NecroGod 404 points405 points ago

Hate it when legs won't QWOPerate.

[–]SgtPingwen 17 points18 points ago

Best pun I've seen since the last koala post.

[–]statuek 5 points6 points ago

I can't figure this out.

[–]dombledore 9 points10 points ago

NercoGod's comment, and the .gif are both references to the extremely difficult game, QWOP.

[–]bonkai2010 0 points1 point ago

Please explain

[–]riser 10 points11 points ago

[–]__d-_-b__ 3 points4 points ago

Best pun I've seen since the last time I've seen this pun.

[–]masumaxx 1 point2 points ago

I hated that game. Would always go -1 meters.

The Game BTW

[–]wolf2600 14 points15 points ago

yeah, what's up with that? i can never run or even walk fast in a dream. weird.

[–]Violator99 26 points27 points ago

I read somewhere (sorry, kind find the link) that this has to do with your brain needing to get a ton of signals back from your legs when it is really running. When you're asleep, the brain sends the signals to the legs to run but it doesn't get any back which translates in to you not being able to run in the dream. (and I realize this a very sloppy summation)

I think I once created a dream-hack around this problem though. I figured out in a dream once that if I just ran backwards, that I was able to move at a pretty good pace.

[–]Jiffpants 17 points18 points ago

Does this.. explain punching...? I've had some gnarly dreams requiring serious face punching, but wake up twice as angry because my fist can't break through my opponent's force field. Contact is never made. Satisfaction is never had! Rage! It is infuriating... lol

[–]Yourefuckingwrong 6 points7 points ago

Actually, that's just plain ole repressed rage.

Source:Armchair Jungian Psychologist

[–]Spongi 4 points5 points ago

Once while fighting zombies off in a dream, I punched out in my sleep and gave my girlfriend a nice punch to the nose.

Only time in my life I straight up punched a woman.

[–]complex_reduction 2 points3 points ago

Holy fuck, I have similar dreams! Not all the time, but whenever I try to hit somebody in a dream, it's as if my arms have gone to sleep. Like somebody has been sitting on my arms or something and they're at that stage of being half-dead and really weak, it's really hard to lift my arms, so I just sort of end up ... pushing my fist against them lightly.

[–]cb122 1 point2 points ago

I posted a little earlier about the same thing. I either can't make contact or I'm all wimpy and slappy. Weird!

[–]scubadivingzoo 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I can usually run alright in dreams, but when it comes to punching it feels like I'm barely hitting the person, even at full force.

[–]Nihilithik 0 points1 point ago

yes

[–]Route66_LANparty 0 points1 point ago

This explains why I can drive way to fucking fast or ride a motorcycle way too fast, but I can't run or ride a bicycle for shit in real life... I mean my dreams... fuck where's my totem?

[–]Nihilithik 0 points1 point ago

Yeah you are basically correct...but i cant say it any better. It also goes for punching in a dream. Whenever i have dream fights my arms are so slow and so weak

[–]Space_Poet 1 point2 points ago

That and my other bad one is when I'm really trying to look at something and the more I try the worse it looks. Some say this is because you are actually trying to open your eyes as you sleep causing the dream to lose focus. the running thing I have no idea but I get it often as well.

[–]headwrong 0 points1 point ago

It's because your brain usually deals with walking when gravity and the feel of the surface you're walking on and all manner of other physical interactions are involved. Take them away and you don't know how to walk.

[–]Rivettsroad 0 points1 point ago

It's because where the thinking happens is in one section of the brain, while the movement center is pretty much inactive during REM sleep.

[–]Gaproman123 0 points1 point ago

Well since you're in sleep paralysis when you dream your brain isn't getting signals back from your legs. This is also why punching in a dream feels like your arms are made out of Jell-O

[–]DownWithTheShip 1 point2 points ago

The explanation I heard was that running takes some pretty intricate brain activity that the brain isn't usually geared toward while you're sleeping.

Flying on the other hand can be fairly easy to dream since your brain doesn't know how to fly, so it doesn't take much effort.

I'm sure I screwed up the explanation a bit but i'm sure you get the idea.

[–]BimmerQK 29 points30 points ago

I HATE these dreams. Usually im trying to get away from something but my legs are heavy as fuck. I always wake up with my heart beating thinking why the fuck I cant run inmy dreams and why the dream monster chasing me cant run over 3mph either

[–]HittingSmoke 2 points3 points ago

I have this with dreams where I'm armed as well. I'll have a gun and be trying to defend myself from something but I can never actually pull the trigger. It's too hard.

[–]swing9this 0 points1 point ago

Same shit always happens to me, except I always have to go up stairs to get to something.

[–]Besius 10 points11 points ago

Whenever i try to run in dreams, i can kind of do some extremely slow motion run... like im doing it... but it takes all of my concentration and effort and im exhausted after 3 steps. Imagine running but every single jump takes you about 10cm and takes a good 5 seconds...

It's really rather annoying.

[–]MachoInPoncho 28 points29 points ago

Just too clarify: Someone is plaing QWOP irl.

[–]_ap_ 4 points5 points ago

Thank you, I've never understood this gif. I just thought he was retarded or something. Now I've googled what QWOP is, it's hilarious. I've been playing for a bout half an hour and only made 1.9m lol.

[–]SixshooteR32 8 points9 points ago

Yea just wait till the end of the track, Hurdle time!

[–]_ap_ 11 points12 points ago

Fuck off, really? I've now made it 4.2m which comprised of a stride and a half and a forward flying face plant. I don't think this game is for me.

[–]ohnopandas 0 points1 point ago

You should try CLOP!

[–]AscorGames 2 points3 points ago

That guy in the background actually has a keyboard if you look closely.

[–]_adi 5 points6 points ago

this is the first time i noticed the girl in the background with the keyboard

[–]Monso 5 points6 points ago

When I want to run in a dream, what I usually devolve to is leaning forward really far and using my hands to grip and pull myself across the ground.

[–]alastor136 10 points11 points ago

I was going to write, ' QWOP ATTACK'

but then I realised everyone probs had the exact same idea

and I did it anyway

so here it is-

QWOP ATTACK

[–]ghostworld 3 points4 points ago

LOL I can't run in my dreams either. Glad I'm not the only one.

[–]MjrJWPowell 3 points4 points ago

Don't tuck your sheets in, if your legs feel trapped it will often cause them not to work while dreaming.

[–]Provanilla 6 points7 points ago

Is..Is this the answer to my life's problems?!

[–]dudemann 2 points3 points ago

No. I sleep with a sheet or blanket loosely lying over me when I go to bed... like a small gust of wind would put it on the floor. Every time I dream of walking/running, I have the same leg feeling... don't believe the hype!

[–]BringingChaos 2 points3 points ago

I have sleep paralysis a lot too. It's scary how much it truly feels like that.

[–]AndersBM 2 points3 points ago

[–]Smithium 0 points1 point ago

That's when you have to remember to have rollerskates on. This has saved me from werewolves more than once.

[–]noksky 0 points1 point ago

I've had these when being chased. But the worst dreams are when you're fore playing with a really hot lady but you never get to stick it in because you're always woken up before that

[–]jevgenija 0 points1 point ago

I KNOW! My nightmares are so much scarier because of that!

[–]SebbenandSebben 0 points1 point ago

I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE WHAT IS THIS FROM...

[–]Steel12 0 points1 point ago

In addition to the gorilla run, I always dream I get lost during a marathon.

[–]Cabana 1 point2 points ago

In dreams I'm always sort of floating so my feet can't get good traction and I go slow - sort of like running in water.

[–]Buhnanah 1 point2 points ago

I remember reading somewhere that we can't run in dreams, or if we do it's super slow for a reason. It's was something along the lines of:

When we are sleeping, there's a chemical produced that basically makes it so that your body doesn't move when you do in dreams, or else you'd be moving alot during your sleep. This chemical produced affects, not just your body, but your brain (dreams). So in your dreams it's almost impossible to run because of that chemical.

[–]Hampostic 1 point2 points ago

I have never come across a post that I could relate to so much.

[–]Paelcolp 1 point2 points ago

Goddamnit fuck yes!

[–]powerMETALtony 1 point2 points ago

The reason you cant run in dreams has something to do with most of your muscles not being able to be detected because your brain is asleep or something.

BTW ive seen this gif a million times. what the fuck is going on?

[–]dafapster 1 point2 points ago

Whenever that happens to me in a dream, I just start swimming on the air and I go much faster

[–]xXFlyguy373Xx 1 point2 points ago

this haappened to me all the time in nightmares when i was in 4th-6th grade anoying as fuck

[–]Mr_Smithy 1 point2 points ago

[–]drupido 1 point2 points ago

Best QWOP cosplay ever

[–]sargentmyself 1 point2 points ago

Is QWOP in real life!!!!!!!

[–]Steve_the_Scout 0 points1 point ago

Hm. I tend to have lucid dreams, but few of them, so since I know I'm dreaming, I fly instead of walk/run. So much more fun to fly around and float down if you want to be on the "ground".

[–]604Coast 0 points1 point ago

For me it's like I'm running in 50mph winds and I seem to float a little between every step, but in my dreams I'm always trying to sprint.. It's awful

[–]MagicFeet 0 points1 point ago

I was able to jog in my dream, and jump, but when I tried to run, I remember just falling down or stumbled forward. The worst was when I had a dream of being chased by a gang of murderous tofu.

[–]PIG20 0 points1 point ago

WHY THE FUCK IS THAT ALWAYS THE CASE?

[–]Tuvw12 0 points1 point ago

Also when I try to dream on a run

Oh and also you can't dream about what you haven't experienced so what does this say about you.

[–]MagnusExcelsior 0 points1 point ago

Again with this?

[–]ChainSmokinAlcoholic 0 points1 point ago

Whenever I try to run in dreams I end up falling forward and somersaulting where I need to go. It's wicked embarrassing even in the dream. Most of the time it's during a game of soccer or rugby too. It's awful.

[–]raynman37 0 points1 point ago

Can anyone else not clap properly in their dreams? I always clap once and then just throw my hands above my head like I'm cheering. It really pisses me off. It also happens if people are clapping around me.

[–]gottagetoutofit 0 points1 point ago

For those of you wondering why you are shit at running in dreams... Evolutionists theorise that bad dreams are a way of preparing us (or at least our caveman ancestors) for real-life scary situations. So that when you actually have to run for your life, you make damn sure not to trip, fall, slow down etc.

[–]HaqpaH 0 points1 point ago

This is what it looks like when I play QWOP

[–]fend845 0 points1 point ago

I hate when you try to punch in a dream but your fist moves so slow like your under water

[–]CptOmega 0 points1 point ago

....Reddit, you fuck with me.....I seriously was just thinking about this and how in dreams if I am able to run it ends very quickly and switches to me going on all fours.....and BOOM reddit has a post about it...and not only that has the answer as to why....

[–]addictedtohappygenes 0 points1 point ago

Out of curiosity, does anyone who runs regularly and comfortably have dreams like this? I noticed that my dream self actually got better at running when I picked it up in real life. My dream running went from essentially wading through water to effortlessly gliding.

[–]goddessummanda -1 points0 points ago

Can't believe no one said a thing about the ministry of silly walks :(

[–]cheezbergur 0 points1 point ago

Lucky, I always end up kicking the wall and waking up in pain.

[–]lordJabaJaba 1 point2 points ago

QWOP

[–]ace2049ns 0 points1 point ago

OMG! Whenever I try to run, one of my legs just won't go while the other was fine. I thought my body has been trying to tell me something was wrong with my leg. Then one dream I noticed both worked fine while I tried to run. That very fascinating that it happens to other people.

[–]Soronir 0 points1 point ago

In dreams I always used to run on all fours because of the whole slow-motiony thing. I'd literally be grabbing onto grass with my hands and pulling myself forward as I pushed with my legs. Always made me wanna run like that after waking up lol.

[–]PRETTY_LONG_USERNAME 0 points1 point ago

QWOP IRL

[–]NovaT 0 points1 point ago

My theory as to why I can't run or punch properly in a dream is this:

When you are asleep you are generally sleeping under blankets/sheets. The blankets are weighing down on your whole body including your arms and legs, which your body can still feel whilst asleep. So when you try to run in your dream, your body is still trying to get feedback from your legs which feel weighed down by the blankets, and this is why you feel unable to run properly.

[–]RSGxOhSweetJesus 1 point2 points ago

Musta been playing qwop

[–]dfuzzy 0 points1 point ago

I hate that feeling. It's also similar when I'm punching someone. It feels like im punching in slow motion.

[–]Cynical_Bastard_ 1 point2 points ago

The hard part is trying to punch someone.

Same for me, and I also punch like a newly born kitten.

I always feel like I'm trying to run on the bottom of a pool or with low gravity. It results in me running at a 45 degree angle and going fast as fuck.

[–]TrentonHoshiko 0 points1 point ago

He's doing it wrong, the Q and the P have to be tapped simultaneously!

[–]electricmice 0 points1 point ago

whenever i try to run in a dream i end up having to use my hands to help me run faster

QWOP in real life

[–]Grantselrich 0 points1 point ago

In the most simple explanation possible, it has to do with your legs not being able to move as they're asleep, your brain tries to relate your actions in dreams to your physical body. Thus stalling your legs in dreams.

[–]ztikmaenn 0 points1 point ago

I had a dream where everybody tried to run and wore a magical seatbelt that meant they had to lean really far forward to run.

[–]Blabajif 0 points1 point ago

Is nobody going to mention the girl in the background apparently typing on a computer keyboard with the chord clearly dangling into the grass?

[–]Tonamo 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone else notice the girl behind the runner holding a keyboard plugged into absolutely nothing, AND she's actually pressing buttons?

[–]ghhrfy 0 points1 point ago

QWOPing in real life

[–]abom420 0 points1 point ago

I run A LOT in my dreams, not sure what you speak of. Always being chased and climbing things. The constant fear, like if they find me I die. Most recent was actually after Batman, Had a split personality dream as both joker and batman. There was a chase up to the top floor, then a jump through a window to a tree which was very video-game feeling.

Further in the dream I was as the joker chasing the car I just got into as the cop but the laughter. We were going real fast and there was motion blur and I just remember laughing as I heard gunfire. Like sidesplitting I can't breathe laughter.

[–]Chicken_Mercenary 0 points1 point ago

Your legs are caught in the bed sheets. It's the same concept of falling in a dream.

[–]avgn 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of QWOP

[–]Bobilip 0 points1 point ago

Lucid dreaming bro.

[–]Taheiro 0 points1 point ago

Alright so am I the only one who has no problem running normal in my dreams? It sure feels that way after browsing the comments.

[–]steveocaster 0 points1 point ago
