I think the thing there is that dogs are pack animals. If you are considered the alpha and you introduce someone new it knows not to hurt it.
Cats are solitary though and have no such code.

Nice. My uncle has two dogs, one much bigger than the other, but the smaller dog always tries to be the dominant one. The thing is, the bigger dog knows that he is the most dominant dog, so every once in a while after he grows tired of the smaller dogs antics, he just knocks him over and puts him in his place. Funny to watch, but like this gif, at first it almost seems like the bigger dog is just giving up, when in fact he's just trying to avoid getting to aggressive with the clearly smaller animal.
