Not the fact that it appears to be a metal bar/pipe as well? To do that damage it would have to be. They make them so they buckle when hit. Even though they are meant to prevent people from getting in, public safety is still #1.

If it was not automated and was blocking something it would be a steel pipe. But those also open horizontally so they still have some give while providing some security still.

I've driven through one before. They're not that strong and I think they're designed to break away at a joint if too much pressure is applied to them. I could be wrong because I didn't stick around to check.

This was one at a tollbooth but I think they use the same kind. Also we were going like 50 mph. The car was fine but it was scary as shit (we didn't see it coming b/c of rain and most tollbooths don't have them anymore).

THE BOOK WAS BETTER.

We always dressed my dog up as Tock, the Watchdog for Hallowe'en. He looked SO CUTE with the cardboard clock and moveable hands attached to a little vest on him :D And he would always bark when people came to the door . . . hee.

B+ on the fake gif. Next time, instead of using a static image as your baseline, use actual video. The human eye can detect BS when nothing, not even the leaves in the trees show even the slightest bit of movement. I'd also try to incorporate shadows, and probably make sure to not animate background images in front of foreground images - that toll arm jumps over the trees in the foreground at the beginning of the gif.

If you're going to fake something, why would you choose a toll gate? I'd go a little more extreme. Also, watch the roof of the car right as the gif loops, you can see the damage done loop as well. If its fake, someone went to a lot of trouble for some karma... and perhaps they deserve it.
