I've seen this picture a few times and every time I see it, I think to myself, "fuck! That is a beautiful cat."

Was the first time you saw it the first time it was ever posted?

[–]Clockian 5 points6 points ago

Assuming that three months one is really the first (Karma Decay doesn't always find everything), then...yes, it was.

[–]MySouthAfricanAcc 2 points3 points ago

And every other picture you've seen online/on Reddit? There will be people who won't have seen this, and those who will appreciate seeing it again if they already have.

Part of Reddiquette is not complaining about reposts for these reasons.

part of being a good redditor is following reddiquette which involves not complaining about reposts.

Please don't: Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote. Keep in mind that linking to previous posts is not automatically a complaint; it is information. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote.

Credit the source, if you can find it.

[–]borkedddd 2 points3 points ago

Having original content or crediting the source is higher on that list. I'm going to say that its more important for the community to have original content and credit original content.

[–]MySouthAfricanAcc -1 points0 points ago

How do you figure that - because they decided to list "Do" first instead of "Don't"? The thing you're quoting is #5 on the "Do" list; not complaining about reposts is #1 on the "Don't" list - but nice try.

Reposts don't hurt original content - because this guy posted this cat doesn't prevent anyone else from posting something original. If people didn't like it or didn't want to see it, it would get downvoted, and no one would ever have to deal with the apparently soul-crushing experience that is seeing something they've seen before. Lo and behold, people upvote it, because they like it, for whatever reason. You just want the internet to be your personal original content machine, catering solely to you, without taking other people into consideration.

I ask every time, was the first time you saw every picture on the internet the first time it was posted? Perhaps some of, probably a lot, of the images were "reposts" of some form.

[–]borkedddd 1 point2 points ago

If you've ever been to places like ebaumsworld or 9gag for that matter, it's not about original content because the policy of that site is simply put their watermark on content and by that standard it's theirs. Taking something you see on the internet, putting it on imgur is that and the same. Sites like reddit exist because of original content. The subreddits r/aww and r/pics and r/funny and r/wtf seem to be the place to post everything and anything; this is not right. Genuine intent to make someone baww or introduce something visually amazing or make someone laugh or question the sanity of the human race is what it's about; not "Look what I found on the internet guys! Check dat karma!" Compared to 4chan or somethingawful or ebutts Reddit can and is a great thing because of the subreddits; the issue is the flood of reposts.

[–]MySouthAfricanAcc 0 points1 point ago

A repost for you is not a repost for everyone, that's my point. I don't care why someone posts something if it has value to people, which posts like this obviously do, otherwise it wouldn't be upvoted. If you've already seen it, just keep scrolling and move on instead of bleating about it (which really adds less than nothing as a comment - all it says is "I've seen this before, and because I've seen it, it shouldn't be here, regardless of whether anyone else has been it before.").

A repost can genuinely make someone go "aww" or be visually amazing and all of that. Maybe not to you, but again, not everyone is you. A stimulating post being reposted doesn't suddenly render it inherently unstimulating simply by virtue of it being a repost. Many people love re-reading books and re-watching movies and TV shows - maybe you don't, and that's fine, but my point is that something can still be valuable even if someone has seen it before. The quality of an item posted isn't determined by how many times it's been posted. It may diminish its subjective value for you, but, once again, this is not the case for lots of other people.

This is like complaining that the radio has played a song before, or maybe a few times in a day - you're not taking into consideration the people who have only just started listening to the radio. The 800th time you see a repost might be the 1st time someone else sees it, and it could be the most amazing image or song or whatever in the world for them, but if you had your way of nothing ever being reposted, they might have missed out on it.

Is it so hard to see that your experience is not universal to everyone else, and not everything ought to be geared to you personally?

[–]ButtFartMcPoopus 0 points1 point ago

If reposts didn't happen I would have never seen this ludicrously gorgeous cat. Why would someone do that to me?! :'(

[–]magelanz -2 points-1 points ago

The /r/aww sidebar specifically mentions to try and post original content.

We also ask that you abide by the Reddiquette, and that you post original content whenever possible or attribute original content creators.

Even if it's cute, and you haven't seen it before, OP should have at least credited the original owner/photographer of the cat and mentioned it wasn't his own.

[–]MySouthAfricanAcc 1 point2 points ago

The OP doesn't necessarily know the original owner/photographer - and they don't seem to be making any specific claim that the cat is theirs ("My regal kitty"), so I don't see a problem there. If someone is lying then yeah call them out on it, but posting does not equal claiming ownership in any way. The oldest post in that karmadecay table doesn't seem to credit anyone specific either.

I just fail to see the harm. If someone's seen it before, just keep scrolling and let others enjoy it.

[–]magelanz 0 points1 point ago

I'm not a mod, I don't make the rules. I didn't write anything on the sidebar, just pointing out how this subreddit is run. But I do appreciate them trying to keep r/aww from being as bad as what /r/funny and /r/pics have become. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with Clockian linking the KarmaDecay history. The original post often contains info people are looking for (name of breed, name of the animal, history of the animal) and gives people an idea of whether or not they need to be asking OP these questions or not.

[–]MySouthAfricanAcc -2 points-1 points ago

The subreddit also asks people to follow rediquette, which specifically says not to complain about reposts, which is exactly what Clockian was doing. Not "here's the original thread in case anyone wanted any additional info" - they were simply moaning about it being a repost.

[–]yeastinfectionary -1 points0 points ago

none of this shit matters. it's just a reddit post about a picture of a cat. go outside

[–]jerseylegend -1 points0 points ago

stop bitching about a repost. just because you've seen it, doesn't mean everyone else has. i've been on reddit for more than a year, and i don't recall ever seeing this cat.

[–]chefcash 1 point2 points ago

What kinda cat is this?

[–]orost 0 points1 point ago

Its ears look Siberian. But I'm not sure.

[–]Hakkz 0 points1 point ago

Owning 2 Siberians myself, this cat looks very much like my Siberians.

[–]ColloquiaIism 0 points1 point ago

[–]schmak2010 0 points1 point ago

That's a Main Coon ... I think.

[–]ColloquiaIism 0 points1 point ago

F.Y.I., this breed is a Ragdoll.

[–]ClassicCat 0 points1 point ago

Pretty cool cat.

[–]epoxy_proxy 0 points1 point ago

This must be Mina Suvari's cat.

[–]dilchip21 0 points1 point ago

I'd fuck her

[–]bcp01scu05 0 points1 point ago

I think this is a young Siberian. My best friend has one who has won a few cat shows and they are gorgeous, although HEAVY (20+ lbs). The darker colors don't completely come in until they are several years old.

Best part for him is that it seems to be hypoallergenic - he is allergic to cats but not the Siberian it seems.

[–]NightHawk1212 0 points1 point ago

Fucking reposts!

[–]RaboKarabek 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the work of f/1.4 to me.
