I think the dynamic way that the author mimics German Romantic literature is rather astounding. Gary's inability to remember Melandra's name, combined with the symbolism of the 'stink,' leaves us feeling connected to a 'fresh' smelling past, yet aware of an uncertain future. A good read, at any rate.
