This happens when they clean the tanker with a hot water pressure washer then seal it back up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_hci9vrvfw

[–]skintigh 12 points13 points ago

Looked like they hooked up a hose and pumped it out till it imploded.

Blurb on the video is "Why is it important to properly vent a tank car before emptying it."

Could heating it and cooling it really cause an implosion?

[–]thestruin 14 points15 points ago

yup, take a coke can, some tongs, and a bowl of water, the colder the better, fill the can with a couple cm of water, heat it on the range until the water is boiling, grab the can with the tongs, turn it upside down into the bowl of water, covering the open end of the can, implosion.

EDIT: just read the next frigging comment, i'm redundant.

[–]OmniaMors 2 points3 points ago

yeah but you gave an experiment, which in my book is 20x better than an answer. give a man a fish ...

[–]Hero_of_Hyrule 4 points5 points ago

Yes. If the inside is filled with hot air and water vapor, then when it cools the inside pressure will be much less than the outside air pressure. The differential will cause the tank to crush. Here's a small scale demonstration, courtesy of OP.

[–]Diputus 256 points257 points ago

How?

[–]kcell[S] 754 points755 points ago

It's caused by a sudden/massive pressure differential. Here's a HS science class doing the same thing on a smaller scale.

Or Invisible Hulk. I prefer invisible hulk

Edit: the number of comments about the "rack" of some obscure student in the background makes me very sad inside.

[–]lethargicwalrus 73 points74 points ago

A very rare occurrence indeed.

[–]Take_Me_To_Elysium 30 points31 points ago

It happens once in a blue moon.

Interestingly, googling "once in a blue moon" provides the result that "once in a blue moon" = 1.16699016 × 10-8 hertz

I save it for things I really, really dislike. It's a bit excessive for everyday use.

[–]I-am_Batman 19 points20 points ago

[–]drink_your_milk 25 points26 points ago

Not a sudden pressure differential, a gradual one. It's caused by pumping out a tank without venting it: the tank can withstand a great pressure differential as long as its structure is maintained. when the pressure differential gets too great, the tank starts to collapse, and as soon as it starts to lose its structure it loses a ton of strength, and can no longer withstand such a pressure differential. It's a 'straw that broke the camel's back' sort of situation.

[–]Nerbyl 10 points11 points ago

[–]Jaduardo 10 points11 points ago

Well, not exactly sudden.

[–]zip_000 85 points86 points ago

It is pretty sudden.... it just takes a while to suddenly happen.

[–]dr_chunks 3 points4 points ago

The possibility that you would edit it and render my comment nonsensical did cross my mind. I tip my hat to you, Sir.

[–]sandhol 2 points3 points ago

That's the same outcome but it's not the same principle. This was done on purpose. It's when you take out product from the container but don't have atmoshpheric vapors reintroduced into the container. You see this in fuel tankers sometimes when they forget to set up their vapor recovery systems when unloading.

[–]thirdfounder 3 points4 points ago

came to say this -- looks similar but is not the same.

the kids in class are demonstrating what happens when you cool a gas in a sealed can, lowering the internal pressure until the outside atmospheric pressure can crush it.

the tank car is demonstrating not a temperature-induced pressure lowering but an actual evacuation of the car, resulting in a near-zero pressure (or reduced to whatever the vapor pressure of the evacuating liquid is, very likely near zero) between the top of the car and the surface of the remaining liquid.

i know, this isn't /r/science -- but as a one-time chemical engineer i cannot let this stand. :)

[–]thirdfounder 152 points153 points ago

it's apparently part of a training video, illustrating why you want to properly vent a tank car when you're emptying it with a pump. the pump empties the car, and (if not vented) pulls a vacuum that eventually causes the car to implode.

[–]well_thats_that 137 points138 points ago

Part of a TRAINing video? Right!? RIGHT?

[–]tomAHAAT 5 points6 points ago

disturbing

[–]Zorruq 14 points15 points ago

SCIENCE!

[–]minutman 7 points8 points ago

But will it blend?

[–]EdricStorm 21 points22 points ago

Thirdfounder has it right, I believe, but there's another way it can happen.

If the tanker is filled with something very hot, like boiling water, naturally the gas and steam will stay in the tanker when drained, but since they're thinner, as they cool down, they condense and that leaves a vaccuum inside the tanker, which then implodes violently as you see above

[–]HouselsLife 13 points14 points ago

That's exactly what I was going to say. There's no way a pump would be so strong that it could collapse an oil tanker. Hot air contracting, however, can do it. There are a few videos of people doing that with 55 gallon oil drums around.

MAN, it's really bad there isn't audio!

[–]quetzatcoatl 13 points14 points ago

You don't actually need a very large negative pressure difference to collapse a tank like that, they are designed to hold large positive pressure differences and but will collapse much easier.

[–]peese-of-cawffee 12 points13 points ago

Yeah, railroad worker here, and I've cleaned quite a few tank cars. You can't even let those pumps get over 30psi of negative pressure, or you'll be in trouble because apparently that's enough to collapse a tank car.

[–]palmfanboi 2 points3 points ago

Yes, this. I've seen many buckled oil tankers on the railways.

[–]FredFnord 10 points11 points ago

Hint: a pump doesn't even have to be particularly powerful to collapse an oil tanker. The pump merely has to be powerful enough to create a reasonably good vacuum. A vacuum is 'powerful' enough to collapse an oil tanker. They are not designed to resist implosion, and they mostly don't.

Or, to put it another way: let's say you have an oil tanker full of air. You hook up a dinky little 6-volt pump to it that is capable of creating a 0.02 atmosphere vacuum in a bell jar. If you run it for long enough, that same pump is capable of creating about a 0.02 atmosphere vacuum in a tanker (assuming no leaks). It doesn't matter how big the tanker is, because what it's working against is the air pressure inside the tanker. Therefore, a dinky little 6-volt pump is quite capable, given enough time, of collapsing a tanker.

The funny thing, of course, is that hot air contracting as it cools can't ever create more force than a vacuum (or indeed even as much), because the reason it's exerting any force at all is because the cold air takes up less space and is therefore closer to being a vacuum. So your example of how this could happen actually exerts less force (and, unless you are flash-freezing the entire tanker, probably over a longer time) than the way which you claim totally could never cause it.

[–]Schrodingers_cock 8 points9 points ago

False, the vacuum pumps used to drain tankers is entirely capable of imploding a tanker. These things are fucking powerful!

[–]jockc 7 points8 points ago

The weight of the atmosphere.

[–]sshan 2 points3 points ago

It looks like they pulled a vacuum somehow. Either draining via a pump or possibly condensing gasses.

It doesn't actually have to be a big differential in pressure. Because there is a so much surface area even a smallish differential can be destructive if the tank wasn't designed for it.

[–]retire-at-work 2 points3 points ago

I work in a chemical plant, and this is my guess. Notice the 2" hose coming off the belly-valve (bottom of the tank, in the middle). This most likely means that they were off-loading the tank, i.e., sucking some liquid out of it with a pump. What obviously happened is that somebody forgot to open a vent valve to let air come in to replace the liquid that was being pumped out. Vacuum built up inside the tank car and ambient air pressure (14.7 pounds per square inch) collapsed the tank. Edit: Found it on you-tube: It was done on purpose as a demonstration.

[–]elpapaaaa 9 points10 points ago

Please ELI5!

[–]aggrazel 45 points46 points ago

Air on the outside is pushing on the metal tube. Usually the metal tube has air on the inside pushing back on the air on the outside to help it stay in shape. However, someone removed the air from the inside, so now the metal is trying its best to keep the air on the outside from coming in.

Finally, the metal gets too tired and the air on the outisde wins, pushing the metal in. It probably made a loud noise too.

[–]GazUtd 23 points24 points ago

This is a better ELI5 explanation than I've ever read on the ELI5 subreddit.

[–]ollinator117 -1 points0 points ago

The tank was crushed as the pressure insideof it was far less than of the surrounding atmospheric pressure, this may be down to a sharp decrease in temperature of the tank. Comparatively, if the pores in our skin didn't release any pressure to counteract our surrounding atmospheric pressure, we would all end up like the tank.

You can DIY on a much smaller scale. Take an empty soda can, put some water in it (fill like 25% of the can). Put it over a heat source until the water boils.

Then very quickly turn it upside down into a pot of ice water. The can should crush itself.

[–]fieroturbo 1 point2 points ago

You can try this at home with a soda bottle.

Fill it with hot water, let it sit for a few minutes, empty it out, put the cap on, and throw the bottle in the freezer.

[–]SoDutch 0 points1 point ago

This actually happened to a buddy of mine. He just got a new job at a chemical plant and was helping to empty a container. No one told him to hit the pressure valve before attaching the drain hose. There was also some sort of safety valve which malfunctioned. About 5 minutes or so after he began emptying the container, he heard a creak, and then the whole back end just doubled over like a crushed coke can. Cost the company $30K.

[–]protomd 0 points1 point ago

Dunno what I just saw, but I approve of random destruction

[–]Jbs610 1 point2 points ago

I actually "heard" that cave in.

[–]Chemicalcowboy 1 point2 points ago

It looks like this tank is being off loaded. If the pump dosnt drycut (cut off when air hits the impeller) it will implode the tank. Ive seen the happen with a few 18 wheeler tankers. It was pretty scary. I thought i was going die.

[–]willdeb 2 points3 points ago

They closed the valve on the tank without allowing it to cool first. The air inside cooled, causing it to contract. The pressure difference eventually overcame the tank, causing it to implode.
