The tank was crushed as the pressure insideof it was far less than of the surrounding atmospheric pressure, this may be down to a sharp decrease in temperature of the tank. Comparatively, if the pores in our skin didn't release any pressure to counteract our surrounding atmospheric pressure, we would all end up like the tank.

How to do this at home! Get lemonade syrup in those metallic containers Empty it completely and clean the inside with water. Leave about 3cm of water in the bottom and heat the bottle(without cap!) until you can see steam coming from the top. Take it out of the fire and put the cap on as tight as possible(carefull it's hot!) Now wait :)

I used to hydro-test vessels like this for a fabrication shop when I was in college. I crushed 2 like beer cans due to the construction not being able to hold the pressure needed for transport.

You can DIY on a much smaller scale. Take an empty soda can, put some water in it (fill like 25% of the can). Put it over a heat source until the water boils.

Then very quickly turn it upside down into a pot of ice water. The can should crush itself.

You can try this at home with a soda bottle.

This actually happened to a buddy of mine. He just got a new job at a chemical plant and was helping to empty a container. No one told him to hit the pressure valve before attaching the drain hose. There was also some sort of safety valve which malfunctioned. About 5 minutes or so after he began emptying the container, he heard a creak, and then the whole back end just doubled over like a crushed coke can. Cost the company $30K.

It looks like this tank is being off loaded. If the pump dosnt drycut (cut off when air hits the impeller) it will implode the tank. Ive seen the happen with a few 18 wheeler tankers. It was pretty scary. I thought i was going die.

They closed the valve on the tank without allowing it to cool first. The air inside cooled, causing it to contract. The pressure difference eventually overcame the tank, causing it to implode.
