Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Info: This Lion's Mane Jellyfish is the largest in the world. Six metres in diameter and with tentacles 50 metres long.

You've been misled. Apparently this is neither a real photograph, the diver shopped in to make it look much larger, or a lions mane jellyfish.

Supposedly, its a Nomura jellyfish. Video here for actual scale.

Still 6 meters in diameter is pretty freaking big. Also jellyfish stings suck so nope, no way, f that thing.

[–]nodnodwinkwink 0 points1 point ago

6 metres? nope. 6 - 7 feet for the adult Nomura, 7'6" for the largest Lions Mane ever found.

Believe it or not, this jelly is actually not too dangerous. Just causes some temporary pain and redness. Nothing fatal. But I mean....If you got tangled up in there or something...that might be dangerous.

It's not so much the fear of seeing one when you're in the water, it's the immediate panic when you have to turn around and see how many others may or may not be around you. Lions mane jellyfish are notorious pack animals, traveling in whats called a "Quaffle" of up to 200 and have been known to take down sperm whales in as little as 17 minutes before consuming them entirely. Lions Mane Jellyfish are also experts in identity theft.

Lions mane jellyfish sit at home cutting themselves, thinking only of you.

The main reason you couldn't swim next to it is because this is a photoshopped picture. Those don't grow anywhere near the size that is shown here.

More realistic size? Although pants no less full of shit.

[–]mesaone 1 point2 points ago

in that picture, it's impossible to tell how large it is. Notice how the diver is behind the jellyfish?
