Torture for people dying of thirst..

[–]HoHoNOPE 155 points156 points ago

I'm thirsty.

Better get on the swing set for a drink.

[–]footballersrok -5 points-4 points ago

And not even get wet.

[–]Baukelien 28 points29 points ago

You might even say they´re being... tantalized.

[–]RoboLemur 5 points6 points ago

It's not too often I see Greek mythology jokes on here. Well done.

[–]pocket_eggs 2 points3 points ago

Oh, so that's where that word comes from!

[–]thatwouldbesweet 114 points115 points ago

Perfect, except that I would WANT to get doused by the water

[–]Admiral_Donuts 150 points151 points ago

Yeah, I already have a swing where I can swing and not get doused by water, it's called a normal swing.

It's like going to one of those restaurants where you make your own food. Pretty sure I can do that at home.

[–]ProjectStormy 16 points17 points ago

What the hell are you on about restaurants where you cook your own food? Tha fuck?

[–]whitey_sorkin 8 points9 points ago

Kramer had the idea for a pizza place where you make your own pie.

[–]krueger9 2 points3 points ago

It's not a pizza until it comes out of the oven!

[–]easilyamazed 15 points16 points ago

There are restaurant where they give you raw meat and you cook it on your own personal grill which is in the middle of the table.

[–]ProjectStormy 25 points26 points ago

Wait, like Korean BBQ's? PAH THOSE ARE OK AND AWESOME!

I thought you meant like a Subway you go to and make your own Sub. Or Chipotle but make your own burrito.

[–]HolcanGreen green trees 4 points5 points ago

Or hot pot, i love me some hot pot.

[–]notsoberent -1 points0 points ago

Especially when its on fire!

[–]kharanos 8 points9 points ago

But it's already been cut, spiced etc. It doesn't even take a few minutes to get it ready to eat.

[–]NorFla 10 points11 points ago

Plus you don't have to clean.

[–]AbasementPark 2 points3 points ago

Definitely! Sometimes I feel like paying five dollars just to not have to clean up after myself when I cook.

[–]Admiral_Donuts 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, it's some kind of trendy thing where they give you the ingredients and you're your own chef.

[–]marx2k 10 points11 points ago

I call that "being at home after having gone to the supermarket"

[–]MediocreJerk 0 points1 point ago

But you don't have to do the dishes

[–]ambivilant 1 point2 points ago

Paper plates and plastic silver wear.

[–]windyfish 1 point2 points ago

Or dishwasher.

[–]friedsushi87 0 points1 point ago

I'm certain that you get plenty wet from this swing.

The mist, wind, etc..would be quite cooling and refreshing on a hot summer's day.

[–]roguewave 2 points3 points ago

Just about anything gets me wet these days

[–]TheDiscoBastard 0 points1 point ago

Dude, restaurants where you cook your own food would revolutionize our culture and economy. Eating out would become less expensive because labor costs would be cut, making it more available to the young and poor. It would also make eating out more personal because there's something kind of barrier breaking and casual about making food with someone else.

[–]noblehawk 1 point2 points ago

that would be sweet

[–]stoopdawg 39 points40 points ago

I kept waiting for the water to hit them... not this time... ooooohhh... almost!

[–]ThisMakesMeMoist 52 points53 points ago

I know! Haha but when it finally does, it's HILARIOUS!

[–]strategicambiguity 48 points49 points ago

Not sure why they muted the first 93 swings, it's way better once the audio starts

[–]pburn883[!] 5 points6 points ago

DONT LISTEN TO THESE GUYS!!..... Made me waste an hour of my life

[–]cbs5090 4 points5 points ago

That's because it happens after the hour mark. Man, you almost had it.

[–]windyfish -5 points-4 points ago

4chan reference

[–]thaztrain35 0 points1 point ago

I know right!!!

[–]statusquowarrior 3 points4 points ago

You juuust have to wait for it.

[–]fyiiamaspyBong ripper 46 points47 points ago

I would assume it collects the water at the bottom and reuses it. Otherwise that would get wasteful.

[–]calllllllback 52 points53 points ago

In the long run, isn't that what the water cycle does anyway?

[–]TTTNL 30 points31 points ago

well yes, but then it goes through the meter twice, so you pay twice

[–]DamaOscuraDeTodos 10 points11 points ago

It's not that the Earth will run out of fresh water, but water might be limited in certain locations in a certain period of time. This year, we had a drought, so many places put water limits to keep the rivers from drying too much.

[–]ShlawsonSaysBong ripper 6 points7 points ago

Well I've been watching it a couple of hours now and no one has come to fill it up yet

[–]ajleece 11 points12 points ago

And we can't have any of that, obviously.

[–]Dinosour 8 points9 points ago

For those wondering, there is a pipe in the lower left support that pumps the water back to the top.

[–]Fitsie 6 points7 points ago

as posted before - meanwhile in Ethiopia

[–]Festivalen 16 points17 points ago

make a gif out of the top rated in /r video and gain karma, good idea

[–]VladTheImpalaNyanyanyana 2 points3 points ago

It's a very smooth gif...

[–]MrCatbr3ad 0 points1 point ago

Not that smooth... once they go back you can see all of the water shifting back to the left... ._.

[–]VladTheImpalaNyanyanyana 0 points1 point ago

Ah - I was distracted by the headlights...

[–]Damascius 4 points5 points ago

I'm swiiiiiinging in the raaaaaain.

[–]itttdone 9 points10 points ago

how? Science PLEASE explain this.

[–]ANGRY_HYMEN 15 points16 points ago

"The Waterfall Swing at the 2011 World Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science. Towering steel swing set holding arrays of mechanical solenoids that create a water plane falling in the path of its riders. Riders pass through openings in a waterfall created by precisely monitoring their path via axel-housed encoders, creating the thrill of narrowly escaping obstacles."

[–]relic2279 2 points3 points ago

Check out what else they can do with the technology:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31JFgR37JkQ

[–]roguewave 0 points1 point ago

Not with the same features.

[–]Sloppy_Twat 1 point2 points ago

Im no scientist but I feel like that could have been made simpler.

[–]Minifig81Nyanyanyana 0 points1 point ago

In plain English: SCIENCE BITCHES!

[–]jsherman256Woah or whoa?[S] 19 points20 points ago

The water may be falling down the swing chains when they go through the middle. Or a sensor that cuts the water flow to those spouts, maybe.

[–]prunk 100 points101 points ago

Easier than a sensor, the swing could rotate on a pipe that blocks the water directly in line with the swinger

[–]SourMilk 23 points24 points ago

Definitely the answer I would say. The chain actually is turning the pipe, so the values open when they reach the peak before the swing back and forth. Either way... VERY COOL. Just a huge waste of water... it should do it the opposite way... so you get wet each time you swing.

[–]JakeCameraAction 43 points44 points ago

For your way, I sit in a chair, you go on the swing. I spray you in the face with a hose.

[–]beepbeepsean 7 points8 points ago

It probably collects water at the bottom and recycles it (any other option would be a waste and impractical). Still some waste but not much, could probably run for hours without needing to be refilled with a 1 foot pool.

[–]ThickPiss 2 points3 points ago

so you get wet each time you swing.

I am surprised you got away with this sentence without anyone giggling or making a lewd comment

[–]SourMilk 1 point2 points ago

Hah! Nice catch! Also... nice subliminal comment. Just by commenting, now people can add quirky remarks about streams of "ThickPiss."

[–]Reil 7 points8 points ago

But then when the swing's resting, it'll be constantly pouring water. That's actually more of a waste!

[–]SourMilk 7 points8 points ago

Shit. You're right.

[–]Unfa 1 point2 points ago

A moving lock goes in when it's not in use.

[–]SuperWolf 1 point2 points ago

Could you please give an example?

[–]Unfa 0 points1 point ago

Not sure. Perhaps a L shaped part?

[–]tussilladra 1 point2 points ago

Just turn off the pump that feeds the water to the top part.

[–]Cueball61 0 points1 point ago

From the gif, it seems to be at a slight angle that the water flow begins.

[–]Aiken_Drumn 1 point2 points ago

No it doesn't. When the swing is down its off, its only when they are swinging it will open up.

[–]Modna 0 points1 point ago

Definitely not a pipe. If it was a pipe, the water would turn off then back on again at the same point int he swing, which it does not. It turns off at the apex then back on again towards the valley of the swing.

[–]G2daG 0 points1 point ago

It does have sensors, I saw this at Makerfair in New York last year. Pretty cool to watch

[–]friedsushi87 0 points1 point ago

It probably mists and creates a cool refreshing experience, especially with wind.

[–]whtrbt 3 points4 points ago

I figured it was computer controlled and the water was interrupted based on the speed the person was swinging at.

Your answer is so much simpler and better. :)

[–]G2daG 1 point2 points ago

It is computer controlled, saw this in person. Still cool though.

[–]Arcadefirefly 0 points1 point ago

i think they are doing it the way you describe. if you watch the water it kinda bends in the direction of the swingers. indicating that it is the pipe that is turning. or i am to tired and seeing things.

[–]VodkaHappens 0 points1 point ago

Yep, I just sat looking at the screen thinking, so simple, so clever. Feels weird to realise how much we can accomplish with the education we get nowadays and we just waste it. Gush of short lived motivation incoming!

[–]loosterbooster 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I would say there's a sensor that interrupts the flow.

[–]Jables237 -4 points-3 points ago

Couldn't wait 24 hours to repost with a worst title?

[–]kazarnowicz 3 points4 points ago

It's a friend of mine who built it, the original video is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1uwQVtHHOQ

If you're really interested, I can ask him to answer exactly how it works. I posted him the link to this, so he'll probably see this comment.

[–]sinceojhadisotoners 0 points1 point ago

yes please!

[–]Karl_Marx_ 2 points3 points ago

I feel like this doesn't really an explanation, there are multiple ways to do this. I'm sure you can come with them without research.

[–]Prof_Toke 18 points19 points ago

Why? I mean it's a cool visual effect, but I don't think it would be worth the money.

[–]legendofj 59 points60 points ago

He didn't say he'd like to buy it...

[–]bahnbrecher 2 points3 points ago

It's to keep your dwarves happy.

[–]ElectricLoveMuffin 0 points1 point ago

HAHAHA! Wasn't expecting to this here!

[–]roguewave 0 points1 point ago

You're not terribly familiar with the Maker Faire it came from are you

[–]aStonedSquirtleNyanyanyana 2 points3 points ago

I feel like if I watch it enough, the water will hit them...

[–]DeleriumTrigger 2 points3 points ago

Why the hell is there such a rash of front page reposts literally the next day lately?

[–]roguewave 1 point2 points ago

Many redditors live on the opposite sides of the globe from one another and still don't get to pop on reddit until after work.

[–]Urban_Savage 2 points3 points ago

This was on the front page like 14 hours ago.

[–]madmanmunt 2 points3 points ago

All drought-stricken areas of the globe should have these installed, but without the water part, since they don't have any. They could be called "swingsets"

[–]zigzagg321 0 points1 point ago

What's the point? "Oh look, I almost got wet... I almost got wet again too!"

[–]Karathros 0 points1 point ago

okay so wait.. what purpose does this serve?

[–]ItscalledCannabis 0 points1 point ago

OP... Why?

[–]hellogooddaysir -3 points-2 points ago

You... Why not?

[–]ItscalledCannabis 0 points1 point ago

What Z0bie said...

[–]Z0bieSpace is deep 0 points1 point ago

It's just a regular swing that drops water, just not on you.

[–]Bodilis 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure I would break it in an attempt to beat the machine's timing and swing through the stream..

[–]Dr3wJuice 0 points1 point ago

Yeah Science!

[–]Atario 1 point2 points ago

The looping on the people swinging is so perfect. Wouldn't be able to tell where the break is were it not for the water.

[–]awkwardninjapowers 0 points1 point ago

Dude. I was like, "...whoa!! ...whoa!! ...whoa!! ... ...whoa!!"

[–]soundshaman 0 points1 point ago

Oh sweet excess!

[–]eVaan13 -1 points0 points ago

But what happenes when they stop?

[–]wakaba 1 point2 points ago

I bet if you linked to YouTube it would load faster. Fucking GIFs.

[–]SnowflakeRene 1 point2 points ago

A magical waste of water. Id feel bad but I still swing my little heart out

[–]daedict 1 point2 points ago

Looks like it just keeps looping the same water, out of the base, it's not like it's dumping water all over the place.

[–]Clovyn 0 points1 point ago

Invert it for the summer heat.

[–]eldubs 1 point2 points ago

swinging in the rain

[–]trimalchio420 1 point2 points ago

As amazing as that looks (and I sat there watching it for a minute) I wonder how quickly the novelty would wear off and you would lose interest?

[–]WezzyP 0 points1 point ago

a good spin on the tantalus myth

[–]Bossofu 0 points1 point ago

I'm swiiingin' in the rain, just swiiingin' in the rain...

[–]JadeyG 0 points1 point ago

How do they get off without getting wet?

[–]GeeJo 0 points1 point ago

Suddenly: Wind.

[–]Volun -1 points0 points ago

Meanwhile in Africa.

[–]Cubejam 0 points1 point ago

I'd love to see how they started to swing without getting wet.

[–]Sm1l3Woah or whoa? 0 points1 point ago

That is crazy awesome , i love it!

[–]slowenowen -1 points0 points ago

I've been on one of those. They're pretty sweet.

[–]taughtmonk 0 points1 point ago

Dammit, add another thing to my buckit list.

[–]Captcha_Imagination 0 points1 point ago

I bet they still get wet from mist, totally worth it though

[–]Gourmay 1 point2 points ago

If you're in London anytime soon , there's curently an installation at the Curve (in the Barbican) of a rain room with 3d sensors that make rain stop just where you are as you walk through.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19827066

[–]bfar 0 points1 point ago

I'm swinnngin' in the rain... Just swinngin' in the rain What a glorious feelin', I'm happy again.

[–]Eyshld21sn 1 point2 points ago

wasn't this posted like a few hours ago?

[–]americasdying 0 points1 point ago

I have many credit cards. How much? I'm waiting for a screen to pay.

[–]wdalphin 0 points1 point ago

I admit, I sat there and watched to see them fall out of step and get soaked, even though I knew it was on a loop and they never would...

[–]parzx 1 point2 points ago

What happens when they stop swinging?

[–]CashMoneyChina 1 point2 points ago

It's weird how the internet works. I saw this picture on the front page of reddit this morning; then by tonight I saw it on Weibo, the Chinese twitter.

This has happened a few times with reddit/chinese twitter.

God damn mongolians.

[–]Karl_Marx_ 0 points1 point ago

Assuming the water continually falls, they would get soaked when they first sat down.

[–]Gh0st245 0 points1 point ago

I would like one as well.

[–]selectyour 0 points1 point ago

HAHAHAHAH! THE WATER FINALLY HITS THEM AFTER THE 126th swing :D

[–]Paul-ish 0 points1 point ago

Must have been fun testing and tweaking that.

[–]evolvingspecies -1 points0 points ago

Absolutely pointless

[–]daedict 0 points1 point ago

Art. And you wouldn't be the first person to find it pointless.

[–]staythepath 0 points1 point ago

Oh snap. The song I'm listening to made this seem all magical and shit.... Boreal by Hundred Waters. YouTube

[–]jthing -1 points0 points ago

What is the point of this???

[–]censoredmonkey 0 points1 point ago

How do they start swinging without getting soaked? ..Does the water only start pouring when they're on full swinging mode?

[–]smoke_crack 0 points1 point ago

Gonna be buried but where is this?

[–]lessavyfav68 0 points1 point ago

yeah it would be a lot better if the water kept running

[–]Kicker_Doomstah -1 points0 points ago

why?

[–]nanltech -2 points-1 points ago

This literally got posted 3-4 days ago....

[–]lanehead 0 points1 point ago

Awesome idea! I hope the water gets recycled and not wasted.

[–]Psypss -4 points-3 points ago

Nice repost.

[–]WhompWump -5 points-4 points ago

Just realized how this works and I stopped to post this
