I visited Qingdao, the city the Tsingtao brewery is in, last year. Literally everywhere you go there are restaurants that have kegs sitting on the sidewalk with these bags. and TINY little stools. You walk up, pay around 40 cents (I think...something super cheap) and walk away with a bag of beer.

As for pouring, you hold both the handles in between your thumb and index finger on one hand, and grab one of the bottom corners with your other hand.

"Full" bag - right after purchasing

[–]jamesdefourmi 39 points40 points ago

You can drink them with a straw, too!

[–]TacosForMe 29 points30 points ago

Would it be acceptable to bite a corner of the bag and drink beer from it like some sort of beer-nipple?

[–]PhillyCheeseBlunt 15 points16 points ago

I can't say for sure, but I like your style. You're an innovator.

[–]556x45 0 points1 point ago

That's how I've always done it...

[–]inconsiegeable 2 points3 points ago

That's awesome! For some reason that thought never occurred to us, but it seems so obvious now! We just poured it into a cup or our mouths

[–]a_derp_in_thailand 4 points5 points ago

I'm sorry, but they all still look like a bag of piss...

[–]Jonny_Watts 6 points7 points ago

tasty piss

[–]leprechauns_scrotum -2 points-1 points ago

Chinese beer is not tasty at all. ;-(

[–]devbang 3 points4 points ago

I'm sorry but you're wrong

[–]Galifreyan2012 2 points3 points ago

This particular beer, is not something I enjoyed at all though. It was totally unpalatable. Just my preference.

[–]Pixelatedcow1 -1 points0 points ago

Frothy, foamy piss.

[–]cecyc86 2 points3 points ago

You drank beer with a straw...?

[–]P1ofTheTicket 3 points4 points ago

That sounds absolutely disgusting.

[–]odsquad64 0 points1 point ago

Antill...

[–]philge 1 point2 points ago

No, you cannot drink beer with a straw, it's abominable!

[–]BokehBurgher -2 points-1 points ago

can you drink them with chopstix?

[–]Neg_Karma_Vortex 14 points15 points ago

Can I ask how tall you are? Because you look terribly big for those seats, but I don't imagine you're 2 meters tall or something. I am just about 2 meters tall (1.95). I've always been terrified to go to Asia because I feel like I won't fit anywhere and I'll break everything.

[–]inconsiegeable 27 points28 points ago

I'm 5'9", so I suppose around 1.75 meters?

I went backpacking with a friend who was around 6'3" (1.9m I think?) and he ran into the same issues I did. To be honest though, that was the only time we ever saw those seats, sitting in the restaurants in that city (hence why we took the pictures, they were still a novelty to us). Most of the time things were fine.

The only time I really had trouble was on public bus rides between cities, because the seats were really cramped and I was stuck for between 4-8 hours. Being very tall will also garner a LOT of attention. Tall+white especially, you'll be stopped everywhere to have people take photos with you. Happened to us constantly.

We had to duck coming through some doorways, but him much more so than I. This happens mostly when you're visiting places with old structures.

[–]braunshaver 2 points3 points ago

no homo but your friend is pretty photogenic and looks like a nice, fun guy to chill with.

10/10 would drink with in china

[–]Dannybaker 4 points5 points ago

yes homo

[–]braunshaver 0 points1 point ago

Meh if only.

[–]FridayNightHoops 0 points1 point ago

I'm around 191. Is that big enough that random people start taking pics or am I safe?

[–]umfk 8 points9 points ago

I'm 202cm and I lived in Tokyo for a year. You will hit your head and sometimes you won't have enough room for your legs but otherwise it's no problem. Oh and also, old people will sometimes tell you how tall you are! Just act humble, wave your hand in front of your face and say "Iie, iie.". (No, no.)

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

Seats and doors in asia are smaller, as the people are.

No, I'm not bullshitting you or joking, this is seriously how it is everytime I go there.

[–]cs0540 0 points1 point ago

I'm 6 ft...about 2 meters I think...I didn't have many problems in Korea or China, I did in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore though.

[–]nihoh 2 points3 points ago

6 foot about 2 m. Come on.

[–]cs0540 0 points1 point ago

Quite honestly, I live in a country that uses the Imperial Scale, and i've forgotten metric conversions after finishing my physics bloc in college. I remember a meter being ~3ft...am I wrong?

[–]vortex30 2 points3 points ago

3 feet is a little over 90cm/0.9m, so you're close but if you are 6 feet tall then you are just over 180cm tall.

[–]cs0540 -5 points-4 points ago

So we're pissing over semantics? Either way how does the 20cm difference drastically alter that you will have more issues in the smaller/less-westernized countries because of your height?

[–]aschneid 5 points6 points ago

20cm is 7.8 inches. That isn't quibbling over semantics.

[–]diulei 1 point2 points ago

1m ~ 3ft is just the rule of thumb for a quick and dirty estimation... but saying you're around 2m tall means you're about 6'6".

[–]Barnowl79 7 points8 points ago

What's up man? I lived in Qingdao in 2001-2002. Those bags bring back great memories! Also being able to get a keg for less than ten bucks and take it down to the beach was great too. Did you visit the brewery while you were there? It was funny to learn that the reason it was built in the first place, for the Germans who occupied the city for a few years before World War I.

LAOWAI TILL WE DIE, MUFUCKAS!

[–]leprechauns_scrotum 1 point2 points ago

No. Qingdao was German in years 1897-1918 but was occupied by Japanese in years 1914-1922.

[–]myth1218 4 points5 points ago

Pics or it didn't hap..... well played...

[–]Gorignak 2 points3 points ago

It makes so much sense. The guy is holding 2 beers in one hand, in a secure manner. Very easy and efficient.

[–]sp104 3 points4 points ago

Tell that to the carbonation and head.

[–]Thedarb 16 points17 points ago

I'm gonna go ahead and assume that this beer is intended as just a simple delivery vehicle to inebriation rather than as a limousine to buzz town.

[–]mtchen8 1 point2 points ago

The way you use words...I like it.

[–]gimpbully 2 points3 points ago

Tsingtao's fairly aggressively carbonated, to be fair.

[–]ilikeFLESH 1 point2 points ago

That sounds glorious to me. I love Tsingtao.. my friends all think it's gross. More for me!

[–]EONS 0 points1 point ago

The exported beers from China are typically a different brew than the domestic versions.

Harbin beer is a good example. When I was there, there were at least 5 different kinds of Harbin beer. I can't remember their English names, but the two main ones came in either a green label, or a white label. The green label was absolute piss. The white label was fantastic.

Sadly, I've only ever seen the green label for sale in the US. Then again, hardly surprising considering Anheiser/Imbev bought them - they don't know shit about good beer.

Speaking of beer and China.... there's some beer called Snow that has, somehow, become the highest selling beer in the world. It's a Chinese beer. I have a faint recollection of drinking it once while in China. Not really sure. Something must have happened since I left 6 years ago though, cause I guess it's the highest selling beer in the world since 2008.

[–]ilikeFLESH 0 points1 point ago

You know a lot about beer! I only bought Tsingtao because it was cheap, but enjoyed it so much I started buying because I genuinely want it. :) ...also I'm not very open to nee things, cause I'm bitch like that.

[–]leprechauns_scrotum 0 points1 point ago

I've been in China (Beijing+Shanghai) two months ago. I've drank every beer I've found -> Tsingtao, Yanjing, Suntory, Harbin, Heineken, Budweiser and some others too. But I didn't drink nor see Snow beer. Yet this is a second time in few days I've read that the Snow beer is the highest selling beer in the world. Maybe it's a Guangdong thing?

[–]ProbablyFatIRL 0 points1 point ago

It's a low cost brand, and has been around for at least 13 years. Prevalent around Beijing. Not sure about other cities. It looks like this Incidentally, it's also my favorite. (harbin is good too)

[–]IamaLlamaAma 0 points1 point ago

Snow is a terrible beer for my taste. You find this in small corner stores usually.

[–]MrPeepers85 0 points1 point ago

Unrelated to the beers, just excited to see Dacula getting represented.

World is a small place.

[–]why_not_agnosticism 0 points1 point ago

Pouring style is key. The best way is to pinch at the fulcrum opposite of what will be your "spout." This gives you a balanced pour - well controlled and easy to help out a full round of friends. Make sure to get some shaokao (烧烤) or gala to go with it.

Source: Lived in Qingdao for a year.

[–]fuji311 68 points69 points ago

In the Philippines, When you buy a soda or something similar from a street vendor, they will either pour it in a bag for you, or they expect you to stand there and drink it so you can give them the bottle back. My roommate tried to walk off with a coke bottle and the vendor lost his shit.

[–]Plokhi 11 points12 points ago

Paper cups?

[–]I_Will_Dumb_It_Down 16 points17 points ago

Too expensive. More like cupped hands.

[–]GorgeouslyHumbl 4 points5 points ago

Can you have some in your hands for ten cents?

[–]I_Will_Dumb_It_Down 3 points4 points ago

Yes.

[–]Lakevren 8 points9 points ago

Pfft, Philippines doesn't even have toilet paper. Don't get me wrong though. Their way of cleaning ass is more hygienic than using toilet paper.

[–]jonscotch 3 points4 points ago

and what way is this? :-o

[–]rtextraordinaire 17 points18 points ago

toilet snakes

[–]rubixqube 5 points6 points ago

The 3 shells started in the Philippines

[–]puckout 2 points3 points ago

[–]CptAlbatross 0 points1 point ago

But if you have explosive, spray diarrhea?

[–]cjhazza 1 point2 points ago

Spray water up the crack.

[–]jonscotch 1 point2 points ago

I would be too scared of being sprayed with my own shitty ass water. I'll stick with TP.

[–]DeHussey 0 points1 point ago

Don't knock it 'til you tried it!

[–]Lakevren 1 point2 points ago

Actually, they use faucet water and use a small "pail", the size of the chinese food soup containers (In America, Filipino-Americans do use the chinese food soup containers). Then add soap.

[–]Starlightbreaker 0 points1 point ago

http://i.imgur.com/aregJ.jpg

super useful stuff.

for the times when you don't want to use a measuring cup to wash your ass.

[–]YouJustThinkIWantIt 1 point2 points ago

Spent a couple weeks in India this summer, I learned bidets are amazing.

[–]I_Saw_Drones 1 point2 points ago

Shit on the sidewalk like a dog, and use plastic bag to pick it up.

[–]thepingas 3 points4 points ago

Do people carry bottles with them to avoid having to drink out of a bag?

[–]dardrix 7 points8 points ago

what my parents tell me (them being filipino, so i guess they know) is that the vendors have to send back the bottles back to the bottling company so that the company can reuse them.

[–]cursing_nearchildren 3 points4 points ago

In Mexico they do this as well.

[–]Daemonecles 1 point2 points ago

In Costa Rica, in the boonies, they do this too.

[–]leprechauns_scrotum 0 points1 point ago

In Thailand also.

[–]timmlyy 5 points6 points ago

He should have ran off.

[–]Tripleshadow 0 points1 point ago

That probably would have been a few cents off that guys paycheck, which is a lot over there

[–]sygnus -1 points0 points ago

My family actually owns a shop-house (there's a little shop in front of the actual house. It's just a window with a counter, and you can see our wares from the outside).

We don't sell soda like that (I dunno, maybe we can afford actual bottles), but I have seen that once.

But I fucking love getting free coconut milk pops.

[–]EvilEmperorZurg 37 points38 points ago

What's next? Wine in a box? Oh wait...

[–]TheSkoomaCat 30 points31 points ago

Milk in bags? Preposterous!

[–]pbj208 4 points5 points ago

Have you heard of "Seoul Milk" (서울 우유)? http://i.imgur.com/uDqa4.jpg

[–]RandomPratt 8 points9 points ago

Nope.

But this guy's heard of Soul Glo

[–]Acidlips242 3 points4 points ago

Oh god,the song.

what... this one?

[–]Acidlips242 1 point2 points ago

[–]RandomPratt 1 point2 points ago

nailed it.

[–]cathpah 0 points1 point ago

Instantly stuck in my head.

[–]Picklebiscuits 0 points1 point ago

That stuff is responsible for the worst food poisoning I've had in my life. 24 straight hours of discharging out of both ends. I still can't drink canned coffee because of that shit.

[–]cdoublejj 0 points1 point ago

I think i have seen that before, supposedly it save space in the fridge. .... Oh wait the joke...

[–]puckout 1 point2 points ago

I've seen milk bags that actually saves space in the fridge. This ain't no joke. NSFW

[–]pianotelephone 0 points1 point ago

There's more than one nipple hole?

[–]jkcal73 0 points1 point ago

there's no hole. it kind of come out of all different pores.

[–]punisher1005 1 point2 points ago

More like "Milk in fun-bags."

[–]CanadianToker 1 point2 points ago

We can get our milk in bags up here in the great north.

[–]terrapurus 0 points1 point ago

Hey! Don't knock a great Aussie invention. And think how good drinking cask red wine can be for your life expectancy. The inventor, Thomas Angrove, lived to the age of 92.

[–]Meanest_Phlebotomist 0 points1 point ago

Also, can't play slap the bag without boxed wine.

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 13 points14 points ago

Don't give Canada any ideas.

[–]strig 1 point2 points ago

we've got enough goddamn bags of beverage here as is

[–]As_a-Canadian 2 points3 points ago

sorry

[–]stardustcrazy 1 point2 points ago

I don't like you. No, I don't accept. No, not eh.

[–]leadfoot323 6 points7 points ago

I'm assuming this is in /r/wtf because of how much foam is in there. I mean, look at it. It's close to 60% foam.

[–]spunkymarimba 7 points8 points ago

My word, that does look a most unwieldy breakfast.

[–]aradenrain 3 points4 points ago

what exactly about beer in bags is WTF-worthy?

[–]kdoyle120 6 points7 points ago

[–]aYANKinEIRE 3 points4 points ago

How does one drink beer from a bag?

[–]OMROKER 29 points30 points ago

It's beer... Il find a way.

[–]blue_tree_spray 5 points6 points ago

A straw perhaps?

[–]ScotteeMC 4 points5 points ago

They should come with bigger handles, just hang it round your next and stick in a straw. That would be fucking awesome.

[–]wojosmith 3 points4 points ago

Wondering the same thing. Do you maybe snip a corner with scissors and have a bunch of mugs ready to pour?

[–]angrytortilla 2 points3 points ago

Who needs a mug when my mouth is right here?!

[–]aYANKinEIRE 3 points4 points ago

Or do they maybe dunk their faces into the bags?

[–]FlyingWalrus7 3 points4 points ago

How does one drink foam from a bag?

FTFY

[–]amandatoryy 2 points3 points ago

quickly.

[–]dollarsignwag 0 points1 point ago

yeah in mexico when you get sodas you cant keep the glass bottle. you have to give it back.

so when you want it to go, they put it in a bag with a straw.... i swear the plastic ups its taste levels by at least two

[–]pianotelephone 0 points1 point ago

It's like how horses eat, you stick the handles over your ears. It allows you to drink with your hands free.

[–]onedavester 1 point2 points ago

this is at a lot of fairs, carnivals, etc. definitely not WTF material. maybe

[–]mightyscoosh 2 points3 points ago

In San Jose, CA, those beers would've cost you another 15 cents unless you brought your own bags.

[–]madindenial 0 points1 point ago

Andy "Beersack"!

[–]kazeari 0 points1 point ago

Are the bags BPA free....

[–]dewnveto 8 points9 points ago

It's China. They scoop the used oil off the street and reuse it for cooking.

[–]neil_goldman 5 points6 points ago

That is one of the gnarliest things i've ever read/seen.

[–]DalekCaek 0 points1 point ago

In China, beer comes in bags.

[–]drfrisker 0 points1 point ago

"what? Its a bag of fanta"

[–]Turbojett 0 points1 point ago

more than half full of suds:

"I wanted a bag of beer, not a bag of air!!"

[–]AFG37 1 point2 points ago

dat head

[–]schemp98 2 points3 points ago

That is the freshest way to drink Tsingtao beer, they highly recommend it when you take their brewery tour... Don't knock it until you try it :)

[–]Georgiagnome 0 points1 point ago

This is no way to treat beer!

[–]amkingdom 0 points1 point ago

This is no way to treat good small batch beers. Otherwise It's fair game. I'd be buying several bags myself. Yes I'm an Irish-American.....

[–]mtbr311 -1 points0 points ago

One time in college we ended up with a partial keg of beer, and all of the ice was quickly melting. Our brilliant plan was to put all the beer into milk jugs and soda bottles and shit until the next weekend, when we would drink it at another party. It was all flat as shit the next weekend, but we drank it anyway. People look at you weird when you're drinking beer out of a milk jug.

[–]asian_identifier 1 point2 points ago

this is chinese

also, prepare to be educated

[–]lurk_moar 0 points1 point ago

TsingTao kind of tastes like bad Heineken, the only thing wrong with the bag is that it is usually not anywhere as cold as you may want it (this goes for almost every beverage in China)

[–]Arquis001 1 point2 points ago

Canada reporting in. I'll leave this here

[–]As_a-Canadian 0 points1 point ago

it's too bad i do most of my shopping across the border in buffalo and the yanks don't carry them.

[–]hippie_hunter 0 points1 point ago

Reason enough to visit America for your shopping.

[–]skintigh 0 points1 point ago

In Thailand I purchased many a bag of iced coffee. Much less waste than a cup, it was spill proof as it was tied around the straw with a rubber band, and it stayed colder longer as I carried it by the rubber band instead of transferring heat to it from my hand through a cup.

So really, the WTF is why does the USA go through so many disposable cups?

[–]strengthof10interns 0 points1 point ago

Bite the corner off and chug that bad boy down.

[–]cptki112noobs 1 point2 points ago

Liquids in bags are a common sight in Asia.

[–]MVolta 0 points1 point ago

they're also not unheard-of in latin america and the caribbean

[–]NarwhalAttack 0 points1 point ago

I'll have one bag, I'm trying to watch my weight.

[–]pdonoso 1 point2 points ago

Thats a great beer

[–]mfskarphedin 1 point2 points ago

I love fucking Tsingtao!

[–]chiaroscuro15 0 points1 point ago

Pee.

[–]yao_42 0 points1 point ago

where im from in china, we used bags to hold breakfast too, like congee or noodles... plastic containers were just too expensive... the bags are good, u just put it on ur bowl, spread them, eat the food, then just throw the bag out, no clean up :D

[–]jackie_chans_nose 0 points1 point ago

My friend went to australia and said they have a cheap beer thats in a bag as well.

[–]Giant_Robot_Birdhead 0 points1 point ago

I brought my urine sample...

[–]Tarijeno 0 points1 point ago

I remember when I lived in South America, in one country the only way you could buy a liter of milk was in a sealed bag. You'd bite off the corner and suck out the milk. I just now realized, upon writing this, that I probably looked like a giant gringo sucking on a titty.

[–]rockincooldude 0 points1 point ago

In Boston (I'm sure other cities as well) back in the 50's my parents would be able to get pales of beer direct from the brewery to bring to their parents. Similar concept to the bag, I believe it was a far cheaper way to go.

[–]freakzilla149 1 point2 points ago

One little pinprick and all that beer gone...

[–]Disgustapated 0 points1 point ago

[–]Q-N-A-guy 0 points1 point ago

this is extremely common in China. I lived in HangZhou for a summer. Beer & milk where in bags like these. I dare never to try milk in China. I dunno... I just didn't trust a lot of things in China, however, milk was one thing I dare NOT to try.

[–]FreeTopher 0 points1 point ago

I like this idea..

[–]dc93 1 point2 points ago

Solos sound so much easier

[–]Jonny_Watts 0 points1 point ago

In the Philippines they reuse all glass bottles and refill them, so when you buy soda to go, it's almost always in a plastic bag and straw.

[–]YellowF3v3r 0 points1 point ago

Dude, TsingTao is good beer...

[–]HornyGundam 0 points1 point ago

70% foam

[–]stardustcrazy 0 points1 point ago

In Indonesia it wasn't that uncommon to get drinks in bags-- I even remember my mother drinking coffee from a bag with a straw.

[–]skeeterpan -1 points0 points ago

Because China.

[–]EccoPlexx 0 points1 point ago

I would make a hole at one end and suck on it like a tittie.

[–]jewunit 0 points1 point ago

In elementary school we got our milk in bags. No, I'm not from Canada.

[–]Aaronmcom -1 points0 points ago

Or foamy piss

[–]chinahusker07 1 point2 points ago

TSINGTAO : "This Shit is No Good Try Another One"

[–]P2000Camaro 0 points1 point ago

OK PEople... Can we please stop fucking upvoting shit like this on r/wtf? I mean seriously..? I went on /r/wtf earlier today and every link from number 1 to number 50-ish belonged on /r/pics or r/funny. Not fucking one of even remotely belonged on r/wtf.

[–]GOLTRON 1 point2 points ago

How is the way another country serves beer wtf? This is Eco-friendlier than plastic cups.

[–]Lockwood 2 points3 points ago

You can't set it down. If the bag is torn, your beer is gone. you pretty much have to hold it by the handles and drink it through a straw until it's done. It's hilariously less convenient and less efficient than a plastic cup.

[–]kingrootintootin 2 points3 points ago

1) pour into pitcher

2) use pitcher to pour beer like in any restaurant/bar

3) drink beer

step 2 is optional

[–]grapethosekids -1 points0 points ago

Then what's the point of the bag in the first place?

[–]ConansBeard -1 points0 points ago

To get it home from the store, you dolt... A six pack in a bag is more eco friendly.

[–]sweetberrywine 2 points3 points ago

No it's absolutely not. Aluminum cans are much more environmentally friendly, recycling aluminum saves more energy than recycling LDPE.

[–]ConansBeard 1 point2 points ago

Hmmm. You're probably right, I know its more eco friendly to put milk in bags than those plastic containers, don't tell me that's false too...

[–]sweetberrywine 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure about the bags compared to jugs. The only difference I could think of would be the jugs are HDPE and the bags might be LDPE? It might be easier to ship as well.

[–]HeWhoWas 1 point2 points ago

Even if they're both LDPE (I assume LD stands for low density?) the fact that more would go into the construction of a rigid container such as a plastic milk bottle kind of implies that the bag would be more eco friendly.

[–]GOLTRON 1 point2 points ago

That doesn't make it wtf. I never said if it was convenient or efficient. A bag obviously uses less plastic than a cup. Thus making it Eco-friendlier such as I stated. And yes you can set them down.

[–]Abrothers 0 points1 point ago

But what if your beer bag happens to catch on a corner or something?

[–]SlimyMango -1 points0 points ago

Are you joking?

[–]andrewsmith1986 0 points1 point ago

So that the store can keep the bottle and get the money from recycling.

[–]wojosmith -1 points0 points ago

It is China so bottles expensive for average person.

[–]IkeyJesus 0 points1 point ago

Really?!

[–]HarlequinNight 2 points3 points ago

More foam please.

[–]skyman724 2 points3 points ago

THIS IS WHAT /r/WTF HAS COME TO.

THAT'S THE REAL WTF HERE!

[–]JiggleBiscuits -2 points-1 points ago

First milk, now beer.

Canada is winning.

[–]uriman 1 point2 points ago

beer > milk

[–]GolgothaAvante 0 points1 point ago

Fuck you milk is best liquid.

[–]Chalky_White -1 points0 points ago

Tsingtao is fucking delicious

[–]4alex6 1 point2 points ago

what is this sorcery?! :O

[–]gravion17 0 points1 point ago

What? Oh my...yes!

[–]SaladFengasPapit 0 points1 point ago
