This is much more impressive somehow.

I was wondering if they would all separate back out if you mixed them up. But given the care he took to poor them in, I doubt it.

[–]Hy-phen 64 points65 points ago

(╯°□°)╯︵ ɹood

pour ︵╯(°□°╯)

[–]tyrico 6 points7 points ago

Nope. For example, the honey and corn syrup would mix right away if he were stirring it or say pouring it in with more force. However due to the surface tension and densities of the two materials they will not mix when poured slowly.

[–]croutonicus 4 points5 points ago

The ability of liquids to mix doesn't just rely on their density, but the chemical structure of the two liquids.

For example, cooking oil and water will seperate again if you shake them together because cooking oil has no way of dissolving into water: water is made of small polar molecules, oil is made of larger non-polar molecules. Water molecules also have no way to form strong bonds or interactions with oil. So density "wins" here and the liquids will seperate.

Something like acetone will dissolve in water despite being less dense: the molecules will form hydrogen bonds between eacother keeping them in a homogeneous ("even") solution.

The chances are at least two of the liquids in this column will dissolve in eachother, and it is highly likely there are two liquids with such a low density difference they would take too long to seperate anyway.

[–]RoyGaucho 0 points1 point ago

The rubbing alcohol and water would readily mix if they were touching and they would not separate unless you distill them.

[–]keto4life 2 points3 points ago

Dish soap is designed specifically to act as an effective emulsifier. Its purpose is to suspend a liquid of one density inside another.

[–]doctorqui 1 point2 points ago

Actually the actions of soap/detergent have to due with its ability to allow aliphatic (nonpolar) molecules to dissolve in water (polar solvent). Detergent works by having a polar and nonpolar end. The nonpolar parts can face towards nonpolar particles while the polar end interacts with water allowing the whole thing to dissolve. Wikipedia can probably explain it better than I'm doing now.

[–]poptartmaniac 2 points3 points ago

I was told once "It makes water wetter"

[–]doctorqui -2 points-1 points ago

I... I'm sorry, but no

[–]poptartmaniac 0 points1 point ago

Well, you will have to take that one up with the mad scientist fellow and his rat friend.

[–]youregonnaloveme 0 points1 point ago

I am not an intelligent man.

[–]obeseninja4 17 points18 points ago

That looks like it would be a delicious mixed drink even though it would more than likely kill me.

[–]Lettuce_Get_Weird 17 points18 points ago

It'd be tough to get that ping-pong ball down.

[–]obeseninja4 4 points5 points ago

strippers don't seem to have a problem with it. Wait, I'm thinking of the wrong hole.

[–]TheGreatPastaWars 18 points19 points ago

I think the fact that the drink has "die" right there in the middle of it is what would do you in

[–]obeseninja4 5 points6 points ago

dice, not nearly as deadly as a die.

[–]Kit_Arame 2 points3 points ago

Do you see more than one? Cause I can't, and the picture even labels it as 'a die,' singular.

[–]weasleeasle 5 points6 points ago

Oh that's what it meant, honestly I thought it was some kind of dye and they had spelt it wrong. On closer inspection I can just about see a die.

[–]InvisibleManiac 1 point2 points ago

It's clearer in the video, not so much in the still.

[–]schlickschlick 3 points4 points ago

Maybe Shoenice would drink it.

[–]panicjames 0 points1 point ago

I think if it were mixed that might detract from it a little.

[–]eppursimouve 0 points1 point ago

May I suggest the mixed beer drink black & tan, or a variation that I am more fond of, a Dark side of the Moon?

Yes, but this one inexplicably links the image to "science".

[–]LocoDoritoTaco 2 points3 points ago

and the reference to Br Ba

[–]DangerousIdeas 8 points9 points ago

And expresses OP's passion by using the word, "BITCH!!!".

[–]Th3MadCreator[S] 2 points3 points ago

To be honest, I hadn't seen this at all. It was shared via Facebook and thought it would be good here.

[–]Farisr9k 16 points17 points ago

Worst cocktail ever.

[–]Timid_Pimp 1 point2 points ago

[–]JaccoG 1 point2 points ago

0/10 can not drink again?

[–]Edgers 0 points1 point ago

I think this girl might disagree

[–]RebelWithoutAClue 8 points9 points ago

I find it remarkable that at STP conditions solids vary in specific gravity from lithium at around 0.5 up to uranium at around 18 with even more dense solids at the end of the periodic table while liquids (with the exception of mercury) exist in a comparatively narrow range from 0.5 to maybe 1.5. Bracketing that are gases occupying wide range of relative densities from hydrogen to sulphur hexafluroride being about 65x the density of hydrogen.

It makes me think that liquid exists as a bit of a transition phase barely existing between solids and gases. Solids occupy a factor of 36x between lightest and heaviest, gases 65x, and liquids existing at a sliver of range of 3x between lightest and heaviest.

All that changes as you leave STP conditions though.

[–]tryshapepper 2 points3 points ago

Hmm?

[–]RobinTheBrave 0 points1 point ago

At Standard Temperature and Presure, the densities of various liquids are quite similar, compared to solids, which are a lot more varied.

[–]willscy -3 points-2 points ago

STP is arbitrary.

[–]GabrielsTrumpet 2 points3 points ago

Actually, it is a standard

edit: too much time spent with curly brackets.

[–]kr0kodile 0 points1 point ago

A standart can be arbitrary

[–]belriose 1 point2 points ago

Bromine widens the gap a bit with 3.1.

[–]RoyGaucho 0 points1 point ago

Of course it's a transitionary phase. You have both extremes and you need some sort of middle.

Though you will see some things not go through this "transition" liquid phase, even in STP. Like carbon dioxide undergoing sublimation.

[–]RebelWithoutAClue 0 points1 point ago

Well, I mean it's like a transitionary phase which seems to want to exist less than the solid and gaseous phase in our STP environment.

[–]ienjoyrunning14 4 points5 points ago

Repost, BITCH!!

[–]Th3MadCreator[S] -1 points0 points ago

I did this once when I was little (10ish) and my little sister drank it. She was fine but I this reminded me of that incident.

[–]kirbz1692 1 point2 points ago

I like how the science keeps the different layers from mixing

[–]Johnzsmith[!] 0 points1 point ago

My class made these back in junior high science class back in the 80s. Lots of fun.

[–]speccy2 1 point2 points ago

The fuck is wrong with that water?

[–]nommnom 0 points1 point ago

food colouring

[–]Cookieman459 1 point2 points ago

I just want to shake that up, robbing the world of more order

[–]InvisibleManiac 0 points1 point ago

Some men just want to watch the world churn.

[–]AMACTASTIC55k 0 points1 point ago

I worked some science camps over the summer and this was one of the demonstrations I did on a smaller scale (honey, water, vegetable oil). First-third graders eat this up (not literally) and it's a good intro to variables and predictions "Do you think the same thing would happen with different amounts? Do you think the same thing would happen if we poured the liquids in a different order?"

By the end of it we had crayons, dried pasta, styrofoam peanuts, paperclips and metal washers floating all in different levels. Lots of fun.

I'll have to remember the title of this submission so I can do a search and come back to reference the image if I ever need to. I do this all the time and it works flawlessly.

Thanks. Thank you so much. Thanks again.

[–]nbshark 1 point2 points ago

if you shake it, will it get back to this position eventually? Because that would make it even more awesome...

[–]NotoriousADD 0 points1 point ago

I'd have thought the dish soap would break the water tension and allow the water, milk, and syrups to mix.

[–]runfromtheraptor 1 point2 points ago

Impressive... now show me an alcoholic beverage with around that many layers with decreasing viscosities

[–]squigglebee 0 points1 point ago

This is really really cool, but whoever made this spelled "dye" wrong and I got hung up on it. Edit: oh just kidding guys. Die = 1 dice. Didn't think that one through and didn't see an object.

[–]ViSsrsbusiness 0 points1 point ago

Where I come from, that is not what water looks like.

[–]LE_TROLLFACEXD -1 points0 points ago

[–]Themightyoakwood 1 point2 points ago

I saw this last week. •___•

[–]sudsomatic 0 points1 point ago

The first thing I saw was the word "Die," and for some reason I said "Calm the fuck down!"

[–]nickboy98 0 points1 point ago

Liquid rack city bitch!

Cherry Tomato, Dish Soap, Milk, DIE!

[–]EnemyCarcass 1 point2 points ago

Yeah Mr.White, Yeah Science!

[–]Basically_Wrong 0 points1 point ago

Jesse what are you doing on Reddit?

[–]Maddymazi 0 points1 point ago

Oh! We did something like this while I was in 6th grade. It was pretty cool.

[–]-H0B0- -1 points0 points ago

I thought that was cool.. the first 12 times I saw it.

[–]jhr7887 1 point2 points ago

Repost bitch!

[–]Masamune_X 0 points1 point ago

"DIE"

Well, fuck you too, science.

[–]Thefunkbox 0 points1 point ago

Given the state of our country, I'm reasonably sure you can have this act be considered a modern miracle thanks to god.

[–]punkrocksnoopy23 0 points1 point ago

OK, now bottoms up!

[–]c0d3m45t3r 0 points1 point ago

did someone already ask THE question?

[–]TheCompass 0 points1 point ago

Did chuckle when I read DIE.

[–]TruePotential 0 points1 point ago

Dude, this shit was posted only 2 days ago. WTF. Stop being a karma whoring bitch.

[–]williamoverbeck 0 points1 point ago

[–]bipolar-bear 0 points1 point ago

If only you could drink that...

[–]Chuckaluffagus 0 points1 point ago

*Dye

[–]JontanD 9 points10 points ago

No, *Die, as in the singular of dice.

[–]Phapeu 1 point2 points ago

I feel far less threatened now.

[–]Chuckaluffagus -1 points0 points ago

I thought it was dye. I didn't see the die in there...

[–]DanishDude 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't make sense for dye to be there though.

[–]Chuckaluffagus 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I wasn't thinking. It IS the middle of the night after all.

Oh wait. It's morning. Shit.

[–]poop22_ 0 points1 point ago

I'm drunk and confused. Someone please explain this to me.

[–]TheAtomicPlayboy 7 points8 points ago

Think of it as a science parfait.

[–]nightfire1 0 points1 point ago

I'm thinking more of a science onion.

[–]JasonoftheOregonauts 0 points1 point ago

Except a shitty parfait because it kills you when you eat it.

[–]tyrico 2 points3 points ago

none of the various liquids when poured into each other will mix without agitating (shaking or stirring) the mixture, and the densities of the solid objects make them float in place so to speak. think about when you put a little oil in water to cook something. the liquid oil floats because of chemistry that i won't bore you with. likewise, ice is is a solid so it cannot dissolve or mix, but it does float in water (this is related to density, when water freezes the molecules form a crystal lattice that takes up more space than the liquid water does). these other objects float/hover between their own various substances based on their composition.

[–]Salyangoz -1 points0 points ago

somebody burn this mo'fugger

[–]shafzm 1 point2 points ago

Die?

[–]____V____ 0 points1 point ago

RAGING REPOSTS, BATMAN!

[–]Farisr9k -3 points-2 points ago

TIL a die (or dice) has the same density as milk.. Who knew?

edit: To clarify, it's not the same density, just that it is less dense than the maple syrup below and not heavy enough to break the surface tension.

[–]Farisr9k 0 points1 point ago

I was trying to point out that this is a repost by copying and pasting a few of the top comments from the last time this was on the frontpage.

[–]FunkyFresh707 0 points1 point ago

I fucking love science!

[–]5K337Lord -2 points-1 points ago

Dye*

[–]ramilehti 4 points5 points ago

Die - A polyhedron, usually a cube, with numbers or symbols on each side and used in games of chance.

[–]flamar 3 points4 points ago

Oooh right! That makes sense! I thought the picture was randomly threatening me halfway through!

[–]squigglebee 2 points3 points ago

Oh shit! Me too. I commented a "dye" correction this too and now I feel stupid.

[–]5K337Lord 2 points3 points ago

Yep to both of those

[–]equlix -3 points-2 points ago

Where did you get a picture of my poop tube?

[–]ellewallace86 -4 points-3 points ago

You mean 'dye' not 'die"

[–]lufraf 0 points1 point ago

It means 'die' as in the singular of 'dice'. It's one of the objects floating in the glass.
