Don't ruin his moment.

[–]KittyKathy 4 points5 points ago

[–]O_oblivious 5 points6 points ago

[–]woot0020 35 points36 points ago

I am highly disappointed with the lack of butthurt in /r/aww's reaction.

[–]fizzlefist 0 points1 point ago

Laughed my ass off at that.

[–]masterwit 13 points14 points ago

One of the top comments:

Cute things eating cute things. There needs to be more of this.

Maybe they are getting better. We need to post more animals consuming animals apparently...

[–]teraflop 1 point2 points ago

I think it got removed from the front page, which means the only commenters/voters are people finding it by way of this thread.

[–]Whats4dinner -1 points0 points ago

Perhaps you should cross post in /r/backyard chickens instead.

[–]sicklyfish 1 point2 points ago

Cute things eating cute things. There needs to be more of this.

That one is my favorite.

[–]scubamaster 1 point2 points ago

[–]greenyellowbird 2 points3 points ago

Thanks....i really needed to see a opossum getting caught in a garage door with its babies hanging out all dead.

That's enough internet for me.

[–]Krispyz 0 points1 point ago

Some non-OP dude is capitalizing on this photo there, too. Not many upvotes yet, though.

[–]DrChoco 2 points3 points ago

I'm just glad this wasn't posted to /r/wtf. Based on what I see there nowadays, I could definitely see that happening.

[–]bigbrentos 1 point2 points ago

this is /r/awwwtf material here.

[–]injectlove 11 points12 points ago

:(

[–]nextwiggin4 37 points38 points ago

Every once in awhile I'll spend an hour scouring the internet looking for a picture of an owl without it's plumage because of that image. I'm just curious what they actually look like underneath.

I can never find one anywhere. I find it odd.

[–]iamacannibal 100 points101 points ago

Every year I find 2-3 owls dead in my yard. No clue why. they are just laying there dead. Should I rip off the feathers and take pictures next time? or would that be weird?

[–]MisterFabulous 105 points106 points ago

Yes and Yes.

[–]ianp622 27 points28 points ago

Make sure you wear gloves if you do this. Birds are buckets of disease.

[–]katzenjammer360 13 points14 points ago

It would honestly probably be illegal.

Edit: Source: I am a falconer and ornithology student who incidentally is pretty well versed in the legality of bird-human contact.

[–]koogoro1 17 points18 points ago

If they're already dead, I really don't see why it should be illegal.

[–]katzenjammer360 20 points21 points ago

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act is pretty overarching on anything having to do with native birds. I work at a wildlife rehab, and we have to save all the carcasses of the birds that die and burn them. We are not even allowed to throw them in the garbage. It is even illegal for you to possess feathers from native birds. It's much more restrictive than people think. Of course, you aren't likely to get caught, but if you are it's not very fun for you.

[–]PhillupJSimpson 13 points14 points ago

And there's the second discussion of bird law I've seen today.

[–]niperwiper 12 points13 points ago

Bird law, you say? I know just the man!

[–]Dukelicious 1 point2 points ago

Hummingbirds are illegal tender!

[–]bigcitycrows 2 points3 points ago

You have to burn them? :( We have all ours in the deep freeze, when it gets colder outside we'll thaw them one at a time and make wing/feet/study skin displays. Our director wants a screech owl skin puppet to feed orphans with.

[–]katzenjammer360 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, we deep freeze them and burn them all at once. It's really sad. We have lots of study stuff and we get so many birds. We are right by a major university, but the director has contacted the zoology department MANY times to ask about their collections and if they wanted any specimens for the wildlife biology or vet programs, but it must just be too much work for them cause they always blow her off.

[–]serlindsipity 0 points1 point ago

Where are you located? I work with a museum who will take them immediately so long as you can get a few specific details ( how and where they died etc) also the college zoology museum will take them too. All but eagles due to sacred bird act or something. I can happily facilitate.

[–]katzenjammer360 1 point2 points ago

We are located in Illinois.

[–]bigcitycrows 1 point2 points ago

Where are you located? =)

[–]Retanaru 0 points1 point ago

That last sentence is extremely creepy even though it carries a helpful meaning.

[–]AlisInWonderland 0 points1 point ago

That's strange. I've definitely dissected hawks that had died at a local raptor rehabilitation center and then been given to my college. Wonder if that was legit.

[–]Rizzpooch 0 points1 point ago

That doesn't sound right to me, but I don't know enough about bird law in this country to debate him

[–]kalleerikvahakyla[S] 3 points4 points ago

Because the temptation of killing those animals and claiming they were dead all along might be too much.

[–]greedyiguana 2 points3 points ago

holy shit are you a bird lawyer?

are humming birds legal tender?

[–]katzenjammer360 7 points8 points ago

I could say, but it would take a while to explain. You see, bird law is not governed by reason.

[–]greedyiguana 1 point2 points ago

goddamnit that's always the answer I get

Thank anyways

[–]petedawes 0 points1 point ago

harvey birdman attorney at law

[–]iamacannibal 0 points1 point ago

if it was already dead I don't see why it would be.

[–]katzenjammer360 3 points4 points ago

See above. Raptors are very strongly regulated, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act does not differentiate between live and dead birds.

[–]TimothyGonzalez 2 points3 points ago

So would you say you are quite well versed in... Bird Law?

[–]katzenjammer360 0 points1 point ago

lol, I might go that far >.<

[–]IMongoose 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't. It's a federal crime to pick up and keep a single feather of a protected bird (most of them) in the forest, I doubt removing every single feather of an owl would go over well if you were caught.

[–]serlindsipity 0 points1 point ago

Contact your local museum they will usually take them to add to their collection.

[–]melthornal 0 points1 point ago

Step one: Bring large pot of water to boil, large enough to hold the bird and all the water needed.

Step two: Put bird in boiling water for about 2 minutes.

Step three: Remove from water and, wearing thick rubber gloves, pull the feathers off.

[–]iamacannibal 0 points1 point ago

thanks. If I ever strip an owl of it's feather i'll do this method. I rarely find them fresh enough though. usually their wings are spread and they are stiff/dried up already.

[–]melthornal 0 points1 point ago

It may not even take two minutes to scald them, dump them in, wait 20-30 seconds, pull out and check the feathers repeat until they fall out easily. This is just a really quick and dirty method if you're not going for perfect results and just want the feathers to come out. Water doesn't need to be (probably shouldn't be) boiling but rather a bit under boiling. But again, this is the quick and dirty method.

[–]UndeadTedTurner 39 points40 points ago

I googled owls with no plumage; are they really this terrifying?

[–]Kraftik 14 points15 points ago

creepy as fuck

[–]powerc9000 8 points9 points ago

Oh god they are demons!

[–]whiskeyonsunday 2 points3 points ago

SKEKSIS.

[–]TroubadourCeol 0 points1 point ago

I actually shouted out in terror. Dear jebus that's terrifying.

[–]Captain_Kuhl 5 points6 points ago

Here ya go. Took a while, but I found one, (I think).

[–]auraphage 3 points4 points ago

Honestly I think most birds look like vultures without their plumage. I have a pet cockatiel who plucks his own feathers and we often joke about how much he looks like a vulture.

[–]avenged6644 10 points11 points ago

[–]BitsAndBytes 15 points16 points ago

"Aww" Is not what I said when I saw that picture.

[–]avenged6644 9 points10 points ago

What? Just look at that cute scrotum-like belly!

[–]LettersFromTheSky 0 points1 point ago

O.o

[–]Ruvaak 0 points1 point ago

I hadn't realized how much the belly looked like a scrotum until you said that. Thanks.

[–]matthewtheninja 2 points3 points ago

I remember reading about how owls' face feathers are shaped to direct sound to their ears, giving them amazing hearing.

[–]mengelesparrot 3 points4 points ago

Makes sense, they are both raptors.

[–]Captain_Kuhl 0 points1 point ago

Vultures are scavengers, though.

[–]mengelesparrot 1 point2 points ago

Not sure what you mean, so are ravens but they are not raptors.

[–]Captain_Kuhl 1 point2 points ago

Ah, my bad, I confused the two as equals. Carry on.

[–]sirblastalot 17 points18 points ago

There's a cute thing, which makes me happy, but it's eating ANOTHER cute thing, which makes me sad.

Stop confusing me, internet.

[–]Neebat 9 points10 points ago

It was probably already dead, so it's no big thing.

Because the owl snapped its neck before eating it.

[–]sirblastalot 7 points8 points ago

D:

[–]t55 15 points16 points ago

I've always wondered how it feels to be eaten alive.

[–]Shiftia 10 points11 points ago

That's called vore.

[–]t55 9 points10 points ago

That's sexual though. I want to know for purely academic reasons.

[–]westonci 2 points3 points ago

if swallowed by this owl than you'd probably lose consciousness from suffocation, and shouldn't be in too much pain.

But if eaten alive by piranhas you will die in severe pain.

[–]leonprimrose 2 points3 points ago

asphyxiation seems to me like one of the most miserable natural ways to die.

[–]UnaccountedVariable 2 points3 points ago

Oh man burning to death. Cuz not only are you in pain from being on fire, but the fire is also sucking out all your oxygen and suffocating you.

[–]ForumWarrior 0 points1 point ago

Probably not much different than being thrown into a wheat thresher.

[–]Rather_Dashing 0 points1 point ago

The chick was probably already dead. Dead chicks that are bought from hatcheries are commonly feed to captive carnivorous birds.

[–]cheesefilleddog 0 points1 point ago

I imagine it would be like falling into a woodchipper, but warmer.

[–]variableofmyself 21 points22 points ago

I bet they taste even better when they're fresh.

[–]cody_au 2 points3 points ago

This makes me sad.

[–]kalleerikvahakyla[S] 2 points3 points ago

The flow of nature is not sad. It is beautiful, we all die someday and if it means that with our death, the other animal eats, I find it neat.

[–]Povidius 0 points1 point ago

sad cause that mean old bird lived longer than that cute chick.

[–]Indetermination 2 points3 points ago

I basically just kinda weighed it up in my mind and yeah, owls are cooler than chickens, so I approve of this picture.

[–]xrelaht 2 points3 points ago

/r/awwwtf needs this.

[–]LdLuck -1 points0 points ago

I laughed way too hard at this. Almost tears running down my face laugh. In the library. I blame you for the death stares I got. =P

[–]shakeitshakeitbebe -1 points0 points ago

this is the equivalent of us (humans) eating an ape..weird

[–]Rather_Dashing 0 points1 point ago
