These aren't redwoods. This is a grove of Eucalyptus Regnans, or Mountain Ash (though not an Ash tree). This is Black Spur Drive between the towns of Healesville and Narbethong in Victoria, Australia. Source.

Redwoods look more like this.

[–]dirmer3 25 points26 points ago

I live in the middle of a redwood forest and that was my first thought, "hey, those aren't redwoods." Definitely eucalyptus. Still very pretty, though.

[–]psychonumber1 11 points12 points ago

i had to drive the avenue of the giants today for work. sucks i know... hahaha

[–]dirmer3 4 points5 points ago

Haha that must have been so miserable! =P

[–]LaFridge 2 points3 points ago

I live ten minutes from there... Part of my regular motorcycle ride, so... Haha?

[–]psychonumber1 1 point2 points ago

Nice. I'm in myrtletown. i was diggin the chimney tree vibe today. that's the type of place i want to retire. a seasonal restaurant in an isolated area sounds awesome.

[–]LaFridge 1 point2 points ago

Huh. I'm willing to bet we're less than a mile from each other right now. Not sure that's ever happened to me on the Internet.

[–]psychonumber1 1 point2 points ago

Well then you're more than 10 minutes from the avenue right now ;) how close are you to sal's/john's? I'm about a 10 minute stumble away

[–]LaFridge 1 point2 points ago

I said motorcycle ;)

And I'm about 1/4 mile from Sals (and that damned card shop where the owner freaks out I'd you park in front of his shop but are not a customer).

[–]psychonumber1 1 point2 points ago

We'll have to do reddit sals meetup some time

[–]theman8631 2 points3 points ago

Eureka represent! Fooseball @ sals ftw

[–]Slackinetic 4 points5 points ago

Agreed. Very pretty picture :)

[–]tiramisucake22 0 points1 point ago

Grew up in a redwood forest, my first thought, too.

[–]lm2807 13 points14 points ago

I knew something was off when I saw they were driving on the left side of the road.

[–]LaFridge 3 points4 points ago

My first thought.

I live in a redwood forest. How anyone could think those look even remotely like redwoods is beyond me...

[–]Clobberknockers 1 point2 points ago

Did you take the picture of the redwoods? If so, where? I live in northern California, so I'm always curious if people have been around my neck of the woods.

[–]quinnly 0 points1 point ago

Where you from? I grew up in Mendocino County. Redwood-y as fuck.

[–]LettersFromTheSky 1 point2 points ago

The redwood forest is my favorite area of Northern California coast.

[–]Molladia 0 points1 point ago

Was coming here to make that exact same comment, one of my favorite drives are in those hills. MMM Twisties, Feel the G's

[–]Plonqor 0 points1 point ago

I knew that looked familiar! Awesome drive btw.

[–]KnotClever 1 point2 points ago

I think they call them redwoods for some reason though. I remember a similar drive down a similar road in Australia that was supposed to be a "redwood forest" and it looked exactly like this, but they definitely weren't redwoods.

[–]BobThingamy 0 points1 point ago

You might be thinking of redgums.

[–]KnotClever 0 points1 point ago

Maybe that's what they were, but the signs and print material we had DEFINITELY said redwoods. I am very sure because there was a lengthy discussion about it being weird. We figured it was just some other species with the same name.

[–]king_kron -2 points-1 points ago

It's people this that take pictures like this that get killed every year right there trying to take a pic in the middle of the highway. The trees are beautiful but is it worth your life? Sorry seen too many wrecks there to count.

[–]recigar 9 points10 points ago

WHERES THIS MATE

[–]Slackinetic 7 points8 points ago

Between Healesville and Narbethong in Victoria, Australia.

[–]RaindropBebop -2 points-1 points ago

You guys drive on the right side of the road in Australia?

[–]Tixylix 1 point2 points ago

Well we don't drive on the wrong side of the road.

[–]bitter_cynical_angry -3 points-2 points ago

Redwoods, like saguaro cactuses, only grow in one place in the world.

[–]Slackinetic 3 points4 points ago

If you said kangaroos exist in one place in the world, you'd be a lot closer. As it is, redwood trees have nothing to do with the trees in this picture.

[–]dirmer3 3 points4 points ago

Yes, the trees in the picture are not redwood trees.

[–]bitter_cynical_angry -3 points-2 points ago

Well, no, and no. Kangaroos range over almost all of Australia, which is about 7.6 million km2. Redwoods, and those are redwoods in the picture, are only found in northwest California, which is only 164000 km2 for the entire state. And saguaros are only found in southern Arizona and northwest Mexico, in a combined area also much much smaller than Australia.

[–]Slackinetic 4 points5 points ago

Try again.

These aren't redwoods. They're Mountain Ash. Look at the link provided.

http://www.australiantraveller.com/city-highlight/073-try-to-pick-the-world-s-tallest-flower

[–]bitter_cynical_angry 2 points3 points ago

Interesting. I stand corrected; I was going by the title provided. However, everything posted about redwoods and saguaros is still correct, and worth noting that eucalyptus regnans also grows in only one small area.

[–]dirmer3 2 points3 points ago

There are actually several different kinds of redwoods that grow all over the world.

Source: The visitor's center at a state park up the street from my house.

Also: http://www.redwoodworld.co.uk/redwood_types.htm

[–]bitter_cynical_angry 1 point2 points ago

There are three types, two of which are very large and are found only in California, and the third which is much smaller and grows in China, so not exactly "all over the world", at least not naturally. Giant Redwoods such as are shown in the picture, are found only in California, either near the coast, or in small patches of the western Sierra Nevadas in Central California. Apparently I should have just saved my effort here and posted the wiki link, since all this information can be found there...

[–]dirmer3 2 points3 points ago

You're right, "all over the world" was a terrible choice of words on my part. However, they do grow in more than one place in the world. I believe I was thinking of extinct species of the tree that use to grow in places like Europe. I could be totally off base, too. I'll take a a trip over there tomorrow and take a picture of the map they have on the wall.

[–]Eode11 -1 points0 points ago

California is the only place they grow and reproduce naturally. I've seen a couple of small ones growing in Hawaii, and talked to two guys from somewhere in the midwest where they have 2 really old, stunted redwoods growing in the middle of a field.

[–]iamthetruemichael 0 points1 point ago

They grow pretty happily in Surrey, British Columbia, actually. Not naturally, they were planted there in the last century, but they're not stunted.

Planting them in the midwest is just an idiot move.

[–]recigar 1 point2 points ago

the northern hemisphere?

[–]bitter_cynical_angry 0 points1 point ago

Yes. 15 seconds on Wikipedia would narrow that down even further for you.

[–]LaFridge 0 points1 point ago

Two. Two places.

Ah-ah-ah!

[–]iamthetruemichael 0 points1 point ago

There are Redwoods growing quite happily in Surrey, British Columbia

[–]matthewharrison80 5 points6 points ago

We call them 'red-gums' for short. I have been on this amazing drive many times.

[–]OrgyOfCritics1 3 points4 points ago

Cruis'n USA

[–]GameTheory_ 1 point2 points ago

Trees everywhere + tight turns + narrow roads...fuck everything about that course

[–]Deralict134 0 points1 point ago

Not to mention the trees flattened like pieces of paper. But not all of them, only the ones you don't hit.

[–]deltarob 2 points3 points ago

Coming from England I'll forever be amazed at trees this big

[–]dirmer3 8 points9 points ago

Those are big trees, but they aren't redwoods. Redwood trees are actually much, much larger.

Source: I live in the middle of a redwood forest.

[–]deltarob 2 points3 points ago

OK now I want to visit cali even more

[–]threetimesthelimit 3 points4 points ago

You'll get a scene very similar to that--except actually with CA Redwoods--on Avenue of the Giants. It's a scenic alternate off of US-101 N at the southern end of Humboldt County reaching up to about 20-30 minutes out of Eureka.

Gorgeous. Route 271 is another alternate on the same stretch too.

[–]dirmer3 3 points4 points ago

It really is incredible. I'm still in disbelief that I'm able to live in such a beautiful environment. You really must see the redwood forests before you die.

[–]Slackinetic 2 points3 points ago

Redwoods are much larger, but it has been reported that, back in the early logging of Australia's forests, a Mountain Ash was felled that was much taller than today's redwoods. Source.

The tallest tree ever measured was not a Sequoia sempervirens, but a type of eucalypt (Eucalyptus), an Australian hardwood tree (images). In 1872 forester William Ferguson spotted an extremely tall mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) near the Watts River, Victoria, Australia. Purportedly he was 132.6 m (435 feet) tall. In that time, multiple specimens of 140 m tall were reported in Tasmania.

[–]dirmer3 1 point2 points ago

That is one massive tree! I believe it.

[–]somepromethean 0 points1 point ago

Let's play spot the slenderman!

[–]Dune17k 1 point2 points ago

Endor! WHERE ARE ALL THE LITTLE BEAR CREATURES RUNNING AROUND!?

[–]golliera 0 points1 point ago

This is obviously not in america. The car is driving on the left side of the road. Obviously in Australia as Slackinetic explains.

[–]Roaning 0 points1 point ago

Looks quite murdery.

[–]brettisrad 1 point2 points ago

/r/Trees would LOVE this

[–]KarlMalownz 0 points1 point ago

Must go here.

[–]S_W 1 point2 points ago

To make up for the lack of redwoods in the picture, here are some pictures from when I went recently. There was a large snow storm right before we went so all the snow was melting. It felt like it was raining on us non-stop.

Bitches don't know shit about my Redwoods.

Get those needle-dick trees out of here.

[–]branflaked 0 points1 point ago

I see trees within trees. That middle zone is like its own special colored tree. wow. amzing.

[–]PXRPTRVPSTVR 0 points1 point ago

[–]dirmer3 2 points3 points ago

To be honest, I hear that song in my head once in awhile as I drive home from work/school. I live in the heart of a redwood forest and it really does seem like some sort of Jurassic park.

[–]Undertow88 0 points1 point ago

Where abouts? I live in trinidad, just north of eureka/arcata

[–]prytzi -3 points-2 points ago

10$ if you drive there by night

[–]KarlMalownz 2 points3 points ago

Have headlights been invented? Or was this comment written in 1875?

[–]Molladia 1 point2 points ago

Actually, the signs on this road recommend putting your lights on for safety reasons, mostly incase you run off the road it's easier to find you, and although it looks bright in that picture driving through that pass is fairly moist and dark. The foliage is rather heavy and thick.
