I'm an art major and I have found this picture often while searching for stock images to practice poses from.

Now, I know this is a repost, so you most likely didn't find the image originally - but i don't like how it's been taken out of context by this title.

They look goofy, sure, but they are posing in a specific way as part of a set of stock images, meaning they're used for pose reference and often used by people wanting to have a reference for someone holding a sword.

Not only that, but they're pretty damn brave for putting their selves out like that in a society that will only make fun of them like you are right now.

I hope the upvotes were worth it.

It sounds counter intuitive but many people living in the rural midwest or smaller cities will be surrounded by huge farms but technically live in food deserts. I live in Alabama and in small towns in the winter you would be shocked at the state of the produce isle in the one grocery store. Collard Greens are incredible but get old real quick.

There really is no excuse for what you described, considering we have apples and avocados from chile(in the off-season), fresh fish from New Zealand, etc...

It is really difficult to get fresh food to the middle of nowhere in the winter and have it be anything close to affordable- remember this is where most people live very modestly.

This is the main problem with the slow-food movement and the push to "Eating seasonally and locally"- Over half the country couldn't eat anything but potatoes and onions for an entire season.

Also grocery stores that buy from other grocery stores rather than fresh. The only grocery store in town often has things 1-3 days away from being questionable, or outright bad (like chicken thighs, I've had so many bags I was about to buy turn out to be rancid). It makes it very difficult to buy anything and keep it around longer unless it's the stuff that's horrible for you like microwave meals.

So rather than buying locally, we have to drive about 40 minutes to get to a good store to buy fresh healthy foods. And then comes winter.

I've been losing weight since we started going the extra effort to get fresh and healthy food, weight that I put on by eating the affordable and not likely to go bad tomorrow frozen crap that is the majority of what you can find here. Oh, and corn. Because corn is the only fresh thing we get affordable here. I have no hope to find anything soy as fresh and affordable here, despite it growing in most fields right now.

Or, more pointedly, in larger metropolitan areas, there are more markets with fresh foods.

In the area that I live in, you have two choices. Wal-Mart and HEB. Everything else is small grocery aisles like Walgreens or CVS. Prepackaged preserved foods are king in smaller areas, but if I moved 90 miles west to Houston, I'd have access to much more fresh foods.
