It's called the Swedish Fire Torch. Here's a demo video.

[–]erkurita 24 points25 points ago

I like this one better.

[–]RichiH 9 points10 points ago

Harder to make with a chainsaw, though.

[–]erkurita 3 points4 points ago

Probably because it's made with a drill instead. It should consume the wood at a much slower rate.

[–]RichiH 1 point2 points ago

That was my point, yes :)

Not sure if it burns slower. Less surface, more air speed. Dunno.

[–]ItsTheFeds 8 points9 points ago

That is awesome. Looks to be an incredibly simple rocket stove. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_stove

[–]Odd_nonposter 5 points6 points ago

That thing is essentially a self-contained chimney fire.

[–]Gliese2 5 points6 points ago

It looks like he used an Esbit cube to start that one off.

http://www.esbit.net/

[–]Windy1369 15 points16 points ago

Great little video - but wouldn't tinder->small>large work better than large>small>tinder>ton of fatwood?

[–]Alchoholocaustic 12 points13 points ago

He started the fire at the top because it was easier to do, and then blew the heat downward. I don't see anything wrong with his method. He cooked the damn noodles, didn't he?

[–]ArtfulJack 14 points15 points ago

Yeah he made that fire backward. Bothered the shit out of me.

[–]stickininyoureye 10 points11 points ago

There is a thing called a top down fire. But that would bother the shit out of you too.

[–]Kache 2 points3 points ago

I'm guessing that having the large at the bottom is just to make sure the log begins burning at the bottom at the expense of starting up the fire faster. I can sort of imagine tinder>small>large could start the log burning near the middle/top.

edit
Actually, guess not. Later on in the video, he pulls apart his 4 pieces to show that his logs have begun burning near the top anyway. =\

[–]Mackinstyle 0 points1 point ago

You threaten to not even get the thing going because flames burn up and may not even ignite whats below.

[–]kallekilponen 6 points7 points ago

Or a Jätkänkynttilä in Finnish. Though they're usually a lot taller than that.

[–]Bagelson 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, my dad will sometimes make them out of fir logs at new years. They're about chest high and only cut down the top quarter or so.

[–]BadRag 2 points3 points ago

In Switzerland it's called "Finnenkerze" which means finnish torch.

[–]MooD2 0 points1 point ago

Which can be translated as Lumberjack's candle.

[–]cptdog 0 points1 point ago

They're usually taller the more north you go and you usually don't cut it down so far as in this picture.

Reason is because you want the tinder to keep away from the snow.

[–]AsskickMcGee 2 points3 points ago

Sounds like some sort of kinky sex move (a la Deuce Bigelow 2).

[–]mirzooo 2 points3 points ago

Ray Mears explains it originated from finland during world war 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR7N5zuC8WI#t=21m22s

[–]elephantx 2 points3 points ago

This kid makes great videos. His videos, such as this one help you appreciate the simple things in life.

[–]stickininyoureye 1 point2 points ago

This is incredible. I hope my son appreciates life and nature like this kid.

[–]palinola 2 points3 points ago

That's just what the Germans call it. It's actually a finnish or lappish/sami thing originally, as far as I know.

[–]Alchoholocaustic 0 points1 point ago

How doable is this without the initial chainsaw?

[–]mellanschnaps 3 points4 points ago

I think originally (during wartime or so) this was mostly done by using an axe to chop the log into 4 pieces. No motorsaws then. You can then tie the log back together with string or something and shove small wedges in between to leave space for air. Using a handsaw (big one for cutting logs, not the ones carpenters use) might be possible but does not sound like much fun.

[–]Tankylosaurus 2 points3 points ago

Depends if you want a flat surface to cook on. It's very difficult to get a reasonably flat edged log with just a hatchet or axe. However if you have a pre-cut log, or you cut one by hand with a tree saw, you can then split the log in quarters with the axe and stand them upright a half-inch or so apart to replicate the combustion conditions of the chainsawed log in the photo. Personally I prefer to dig a small hole the diameter of the log and bury them slightly. The buried part acts like the uncut part of the chainsawed log, keeping them from falling over.

[–]anteko 0 points1 point ago

Music was fantastic.

[–]cozmonut 0 points1 point ago

It's transportable!

[–]awesomedan24 0 points1 point ago

Isn't fire torch kind of redundant?

[–]sirblastalot 0 points1 point ago

What's the benefit of using this instead of just putting the pot on a regular fire?

[–]SwedishSnus 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was called, Schwedenfeuer from germany...first saw it there.

[–]Edheldude 0 points1 point ago

It's called (roughly translated) dude's candle here in Finland.

[–]joelav 37 points38 points ago

One word of caution, ripping (cutting WITH the direction of the grain) with a chiansaw is extremely dangerous. Those who do so often, like operators of chainsaw mills. use a specially sharpened chain. Chainsaws are meant primarily for cross cutting (against the direction of the grain).

[–]arc-impulse 12 points13 points ago

serious (maybe stupid) question: why is this dangerous? would it throw splinters at you or would the chainsaw fail?

[–]bassblair11 8 points9 points ago

The chain is spinning at high speeds, if it got caught in a knot or something in the wood it could kick back.

[–]joelav 14 points15 points ago

That's not entirely accurate. UnfoundTieFling is right about the mechanics. On a chain saw there are teeth and chip extractors. The saw does have a tenancy to pull the wood toward you. Cutting against the grain (cross cutting), the wood fibers offer resistance. To further expain, picture a piece of wood as a paint brush. If you were to lay the brush flat and saw the bristles off with a knife, that would be a cross cut. There is a lot of resistance offered and you can control the knife easily. Now picture putting the brush vertical and plunging a knife into it. No resistance. With a chainsaw doing that to a log, it will pull the log into you (bad news and cut hazard). If you brace the log, the chainsaw will have a tendency to "climb the cut" and shoot back it you (goodbye limbs). It take a LOT of practice and control to do this properly. A different grind on the teeth of the chain (positive hook angle) can limit the climb cut tendency to an extent. This is DEFINITELY not for chainsaw newbs

[–]greebwee 0 points1 point ago

Having run a chainsaw off and on for about 10 years as a farmhand\wood bitch, I can say that using a chainsaw this way may be slightly more dangerous, but not much. I've never had a saw "climb" the cut as described, ever. The biggest danger as a chainsaw newb is fatigue. Proper leverage control and not sawing in a way that any buck might hurt you is pretty much par for the course when you've been doing it for a bit. Granted, if you're using a very large saw, binds and bucks and chain breaks become much more dangerous. Using a smallish saw, like you should be for most tasks not involving something large, should not really be out of your control, unless, as I mentioned, you are fatigued.

[–]372xpg 0 points1 point ago

Joe, no one should be doing any cut with the bar tip, and thats the only way you will produce a climbing force. I've taught several people to use a saw and I'd totally be confident teaching a newb how to do this, first step, bring the saw and dog into contact with the top, this way the chain can only pull the log into the dog and there is complete control over the cut. In a worst case scenario the person starts the cut mid bar and the log flips on its side.

Yes I have had branches catch on the underside of the bar and fly into my shin putting me on the ground in pain but I've never had a round move like that, they tend to be too heavy.

[–]372xpg 0 points1 point ago

Kickback happens when the bar tip hits something, and is just as likely cutting any which way without due attention.

[–]UnboundTiefling 2 points3 points ago

A chainsaw uses serrated teeth and a very strong pulling fashion. Each tooth pulls and cuts, it does not simply cut. Sawing on something like this that is unbraced and freely able to move is dangerous because if you use the saw wrong or inaccurately it is likely the saw skips or you hit yourself with the log or...something.

[–]imperfcet 1 point2 points ago

There's more of a chance that a log will split in an unexpected way along the direction of the grain. The blade can get caught in the formed crack and jerk out of your hand, or break the chain.

[–]DiabeetusMan 0 points1 point ago

But for a log, isn't the grain concentric circles? No matter how you orient the three lines that you cut, aren't you always going to be cutting perpendicular to all of the grains?

[–]banditkeith 0 points1 point ago

sounds like a "hand chainsaw" is the safe method of doing this style of log torch, since there's no kickback to worry about there

[–]372xpg 0 points1 point ago

Not even slightly true. Ripping with a chainsaw is not dangerous, however being careless with a chainsaw and doing something you arent used to is not safe. A operator with half a brain can do this easily quickly and safely with any saw that has any size to it and bucking dogs.

Sure you can get a special ripping chain but a powerful saw will cut this like butter. I used to take the rakers way down, ripping across like this was nbd, ripping down the length of a log you could cut huge piles of long stringy curly shavings, perfect for sitting on.

Source: Well for starters my username is a model of chainsaw, I fed myself and paid tuition for many years with that saw, and held a dangerous tree fallers license.

[–]Five_deadly_venoms 85 points86 points ago

Its all fun and games until your pot of soup falls over when the wood burns to the point of ashes.

[–]Kungafsand 38 points39 points ago

Theses things burn very slow. You will have plenty of time and you can even carry it with you and reignite it.

[–]Eurobob 11 points12 points ago

Just make sure you let it cool down a bit first!

[–]usfdude223 37 points38 points ago

Cool down? Pussy.

[–]tjm80 72 points73 points ago

He probably wears bitch mittens.

[–]thefreq 28 points29 points ago

I understand that reference

[–]WoollyMittens 1 point2 points ago

carry it with you and reignite it.

You'd have to take care balancing the soup while you walk though.

It's a shame the posts from that bot don't render correctly on Alien Blue. Pages of scrolling past badly formatted text every time it pops up, and I can't ignore on Alien Blue either. Definitely annoying.

[–]diggerB 1 point2 points ago

As a Canadian, I like this format. It is very polite.

[–]kinnu 7 points8 points ago

Since this is a bot, can we please have functionality this built in to reddit? Don't even have to prevent reposts, just add metadata of some kind to the submissions and let people filter how they choose to (preferably make it configurable based on age and/or points). People who don't want reposts don't see them, and people who are ok with it wouldn't have to endure the comments about karma whoring and whatnot.

[–]overly_familiar 3 points4 points ago

Would be easy to auto add a "Repost" tag on a submission of an image that has been posted before.

I'm fairly new, so I guess this has been debated to hell and back already.

[–]ktappe 5 points6 points ago

Here's the thing: Once Reddit fixes its search engine so you can, I dunno, FIND THINGS WITH IT, then cutting off reposts will be OK. But let's say this person attempted due diligence and tried to find this image before posting. It is completely plausible if they claimed they didn't find it. It is torture when I go try to find a post from just 1 week ago; the search results show me 1 year old posts and not the one from JUST THE OTHER DAY that had 1000 upvotes.

[–]kinnu 0 points1 point ago

Oh there is no question the Reddit search it atrocious, but that is mostly an unrelated matter. A better search would eliminate some % of reposts but I think this will catch most of the same posts, plus much much more. This bot already works and does a pretty good job. The code exists right now so if it is deemed high enough quality it's "just" a matter of integrating it in to reddit (assuming the author consents).

I'm not looking to penalize reposts, most of which I assume are unintentional, just give people the chance to ignore them and reduce the whining induced.

[–]thirdfounder 74 points75 points ago

nice, but if you have a gas-powered chainsaw along don't you probably also have a propane stove? or, for that matter, a car that you can drive to a restaurant? and a hotel?

i guess i'm just a piss-poor camper.

[–]MLIola 19 points20 points ago

You don't necessarily need a chainsaw. With some time, this could probably be done with a hand saw and some elbow grease.

[–]glandyover 91 points92 points ago

If you have elbow grease why don't you cook with that, smart guy? /s

[–]riser 12 points13 points ago

Who doesn't bring elbow grease? Next you're going to tell me that we're out of headlight fluid!

[–]commandodude1265 3 points4 points ago

What do you mean all you have is this flag?

[–]MookieB307 1 point2 points ago

and board stretchers!

[–]OdoyleStillRules 0 points1 point ago

I need a dough repair kit!

[–]BobTheSCV 4 points5 points ago

Because that's gross. You have no idea where those elbows have been!

[–]dancesir 1 point2 points ago

The heat will kill all that icky elbow bacteria!

[–]snarkyaardvark 1 point2 points ago

The good news is that Napien's new formulation doesn't cause elbow stink.

[–]Follow_Follow 1 point2 points ago

There's actually a cleaning product called 'Elbow Grease' here in the UK now. Sort of ruins all the fun.

[–]Lance42 17 points18 points ago

You definitely don't camp if you think a hand saw to create this is a good idea. I'll stick to small logs under a grill or a small portable stove. A large log with that width would be a nightmare to cut by hand.

[–]dyzlexiK 10 points11 points ago

Not to mention that the saw woudnt leave a wide enough cut to burn well due to low airflow.

[–]Cheech47 2 points3 points ago

Bingo, a hacksaw blade is very tiny compared to the footprint of a chainsaw. Plus if you try this on a wood harder than pine, you'll probably throw your shoulder out before you get done manually making all those cuts with a bow-saw.

[–]lbmouse 9 points10 points ago

This would probably cause a caloric deficit, so better off just going hungry... and drinking own piss.

[–]akuta 3 points4 points ago

It's even easy to do with an axe.

[–]cptdog 1 point2 points ago

It's very easy to do with an axe, seems harder to do it with a chainsaw.

[–]theman8631 0 points1 point ago

Seriously? ... Do this BEFORE you go camping and bring it.

[–]Canadave 7 points8 points ago

Seems like a waste of effort to haul a log with you camping. Why not just get a small grill and build a fire under it?

[–]DrSmoke 1 point2 points ago

Because most people that go camping are idiots.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 3 points4 points ago

You're going to carry that log with you? Even if it's a small log, that's still a 5+ pounds and you only get 1 use out of it.

[–]theman8631 0 points1 point ago

Depends on the camping situation, but I didn't really think of it from that angle. I camp pretty close to the car I drove in so in that case it would be a better idea. Hiking, I agree completely.

[–]ZeroGSpaceCow 0 points1 point ago

If you're car camping though, why not just bring a stove? I mean, this is neat, but if you have to prepare it before hand anyway you might as well just bring a stove.

[–]nottodayfolks 3 points4 points ago

Would be a lot more work than using the saw to cut smaller wood and build a regular campfire stove.

[–]SuttonWho 0 points1 point ago

Shhhhhh

[–]DrSmoke 2 points3 points ago

That would literally take hours.

[–]lousypanda 1 point2 points ago

And if you don't have elbow grease, headlight fluid works too.

[–]MindStalker 0 points1 point ago

Or just an axe. Split a log into 4 and your done. It won't work as good as this, but if you use another log as a base and fine some tinder it should work just fine. (This uses the sawdust as tender)

[–]GargamelCuntSnarf 4 points5 points ago

Well, I have been on camping trips before where we either ran out of propane or we mistakenly brought a broken grill. We also were a chainsaw crew, so we actually would have been able to do this, and might have if we'd been any further from civilization.

[–]YoungSerious 2 points3 points ago

Thank you for that incredibly niche anecdotal evidence.

[–]Archaeopteris 5 points6 points ago

Axe or hatchet.

[–]Beakerz 0 points1 point ago

Much simpler and quicker than a damn chainsaw, actually; a few good whacks with an axe and you'll have it split up as needed - 30 seconds tops.

[–]redisnotdead 0 points1 point ago

It is obviously not all that useful to know how to make a swedish fire torch when you're backpacking light. A soda can stove with a small bottle of burning alcohol will take less time to setup and cook your meal all the same.

I've been to camping trips where we had a small axe though and it was useful to make fires that last quite long out of very little wood. It's pretty simple to make and can easily burn even with slightly wet wood. Very resistant to bad weather too.

[–]Avacrux 1 point2 points ago

You could cut it out before you go camping, then just light it when you want to use it. No need to take a chainsaw with you

[–]neagrosk 0 points1 point ago

Metal wedge and a rock should be enough

[–]372xpg 0 points1 point ago

I've used these while working, both brushing/spacing and cutting seismic, no we do not pack camp stoves to work.

[–]deltarob 8 points9 points ago

I've made these before to keep people warm at a friend's birthday party / concert they had in the woods, usually cut the insides a little more though

[–]kalimashookdeday 0 points1 point ago

What do you use inside for kindling? Just smaller branches and what not? Stuff them in the center-like? I figured it would need some sort of semi-long lasting fuel in the middle to get the outer log hot enough to start burning on it's own. Just can't seem to figure out how you do that without just adding a bunch of kindling in the middle until it gets going.

[–]pyrosterilizer 7 points8 points ago

This should be renamed to "How to cook on a log. Once."

[–]pornmonger 2 points3 points ago

"How to cook on a log. Once."*

Sometime after Night of the Living Dead but before Left 4 Dead.

[–]xeonphelps 3 points4 points ago

when did people forget that wood starts on fire. This isn't impressive, it's just a campfire that has the ability to hold a pot on top.

Quick way: bar oil and a little saw gas

Slow way, paper and some small kindling/tinder

the question is how do you go from picture 3 to picture 4

[–]trampus1 0 points1 point ago

I remember the last time this was posted there was a ton of drama in the comments. This time it's boring.

[–]TopsBloobie 0 points1 point ago

How does one cook on a chainsaw?

[–]Hansarn 0 points1 point ago

Pretty common here in Norway. Genious, really.

[–]west0883 0 points1 point ago

Now, instead of taking up your time building a pesky fire pit, just hike out with a chain saw on your back!

Downvoted for spamming reddit with reposts every day.

Seriously, why do people keep upvoting this tool?

[–]M3nt0R -1 points0 points ago

I upvoted because I never saw this picture and I enjoyed it.

I'm sorry I haven't seen everything you've seen, my inferiority displeases me.

[–]PepperBun28 0 points1 point ago

We now return to Cooking with Overly Manly Man.

[–]Rementoire 0 points1 point ago

Just need to find a chainsaw; should have one right in my pocket. Damn, I left it at home.

[–]DrThunder728 1 point2 points ago

Thank God, we had that chainsaw handy.

[–]blablbalb 0 points1 point ago

This is really cool.

[–]ZaWahhuh 1 point2 points ago

...that's a big jump from image 3 to 4...

[–]the_geth 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand everyone's fascination in this thread. First, you either need a special chainsaw or you're going to ruin your regular chainsaw.
Second : Why ??! I mean really, why would you do that, assuming you have the chainsaw and everything. this makes no sense.
Edit : Ok, someone posted this, which makes much more sense https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfRovJ1KcCg

[–]372xpg 0 points1 point ago

No you don't need a special chainsaw, but your average suburban dad with his little bitty saw and not knowing how to sharpen the chain will likely not be able to sink the bar into a log like this.

And yes it makes sense, cold fall day, freezing winter day, out in the block cutting, nice little handwarmer. Sure you could cook on it but I used em for heat. Started with a little bar oil and a splash of saw gas.

[–]the_antipop 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to suggest that would be incredibly hard to cut with a chainsaw in that fashion. As well, I believe that fire would burn incredibly hot for cooking purposes as the fire is basically being funneled directly to your pan.

[–]372xpg 0 points1 point ago

Easy with a decent saw, just cut using the bucking dogs, don't even need to hold the round.

[–]DofPJMACKY 0 points1 point ago

That's actually not the right way to do that..

[–]bitoftheolinout 0 points1 point ago

How to YouTube:

  • Play with fire
  • Give it arcane sounding name, e.g. Dakota Fire Hole, Swedish Torch, Vietnam Magic Flame, Constantinople Conflagration Station, etc.
  • Profit

I learned this many years ago while working in the oilfield slashing sesmic lines. The guy that trained us green as grass kids was the scariest looking 7 foot tall native guy who turned out to be pretty darn awesome. This little trick makes for an awesome little movable heater/cooktop.

[–]dennycraner 0 points1 point ago

This is awesome, but if you have a frying pan and a chain saw, I'm guessing there is a stove of some sort near by, even a camping stove.

[–]somepoorsap 0 points1 point ago

Don't show Kirk Cameron.

[–]HeyAndrewItsMeMitch 1 point2 points ago

I first thought was,

"Oh, sweet! Now I dont need a grate to cook in the wild! I just need a log!"

"...and matches...."

"...and gasoline..."

"...and a chainsaw."

[–]thekinghermit 1 point2 points ago

same post. two months later. Classic reddit

[–]monoenojado 1 point2 points ago

Isnt it a little... weird, you have quick access to a chainsaw but not to a cooking device? I mean, in what situation are these used?

[–]372xpg 0 points1 point ago

See my posts in this thread. Work basically.

[–]BendTime 0 points1 point ago

How to waste a log*

This is only good for one use, you'd be much better off cutting it up and making a normal fire.

[–]Die4myRights 0 points1 point ago

this would be sweet to do in the wild, as long as im carrying my chainsaw with me

[–]Cardger -1 points0 points ago

I'm ron fucking swanson

[–]Foetus__Milkshake 0 points1 point ago

I thought that this said "How to cook a dog". You disappoint me, reddit.

[–]CrrackTheSkye 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget your chainsaw when camping though.

[–]TomRK1089 0 points1 point ago

If I have a goddamn chainsaw with me, I probably have a real firepit, too.

[–]getoutofmyyard 0 points1 point ago

This would be a great survival tip provided that I have in my possession a chainsaw and metal skillet.

[–]thinkyourslickhuh 0 points1 point ago

novel idea! i'll have to try that next time.

[–]chelssmiesterr 0 points1 point ago

/r/paleo would drool over this

[–]amaze__me 0 points1 point ago

Come back a few hours, your food is ready.. on the floor

[–]asboans 0 points1 point ago

I thought: "That would be really useful as I don't own a barbeque!", then realised that I don't own a chainsaw.

[–]jacq_willow 0 points1 point ago

I don't know where, but I've seen this before.

[–]Zaffaro 0 points1 point ago

Great, I'll remember to bring my chainsaw to the next grill party. Wearing a mask to protect me from smoke and with clothes red-splattered with ketchup and BBQ sauce.

[–]FiscalFizz 0 points1 point ago

Next time I go do some dispersed camping, I'll toss my chainsaw in my pack

[–]Megasphaera 1 point2 points ago

what they don't tell you is that the log has to be very thoroughly (1 - 2 years) dried for this work ...

[–]Jonny_Watts 1 point2 points ago

Let me just bring my chainsaw...

[–]SweaterYams 0 points1 point ago

Brilliant! Brilliant I tell you!

[–]ErBarbaRossa 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't the log collapse at some point and drop the pan?

[–]football2106 0 points1 point ago

Just wait 'til the wood split ups then your soup falls and goes everywhere

[–]jpaul3211 0 points1 point ago

[–]Phyllus 0 points1 point ago

How'd you light that? Pour lighter fluid down the cracks?
