“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” Greek proverb

[–]VelosiT 85 points86 points ago

Goddard was a badass.

[–]MyOtherAcctIsACar 77 points78 points ago

Kind of a dick move to bury him right next to the launch site though

[–]spazzm 20 points21 points ago

He's actually buried in Massachusetts:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=398

[–]RabidLibertarian 1 point2 points ago

Well, there wouldn't have been a launch site when he died.

[–]Mcdoofus 14 points15 points ago

He also lived with his mom.

[–]Jafit 73 points74 points ago

Ha! Beta faggot! I bet he didn't even LIFT... OFF... with rockets. I mean...

I'll see myself out

[–]DudeWithTheNose 27 points28 points ago

Bro, Do You even lift?

[–]MyNoFap 16 points17 points ago

This asks for a Lift OFF, brah. Come at me.

[–]Tannz0rz 12 points13 points ago

Son, I can bench press quadruple your body weight... on the moon.

[–]EricFaust 6 points7 points ago

YOU MIRIN BRAH?

[–]dkdelicious 9 points10 points ago

SQUATS AND OATS

[–]the3manhimself 2 points3 points ago

I go to the university he did, Clark! It's an awesome little Massachusetts liberal arts school with a cool attitude but a huge emphasis on research, I love it here! The library is named after him.

[–]Snackleton 0 points1 point ago

Go Clarkies!

[–]scatmanbynight 0 points1 point ago

Apparently he also looked exactly like Nic Cage.

[–]intrepiddemise 0 points1 point ago

Such a badass that the U.S. Government stole his patents and had to pay restitution to his estate after his death (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_H._Goddard#Patent_settlement).

[–]DrDiv 47 points48 points ago

Kind of related, but if you've never seen the movie 'October Sky' I highly suggest you check it out.

[–]Triplebizzle87 10 points11 points ago

Seconded, that movie is absolutely fantastic.

[–]jboogie216 1 point2 points ago

One of my favorites, so inspiring.

[–]BOS13 0 points1 point ago

The movie was good, but the book was one of my favorites of all time.

[–]rdowntime 20 points21 points ago

No tears, but it did make my hairs all tingly.

Credit where credit is due.

Zen Pencils.

You can find a bunch of amazing and motivational comics on the site.

Like this one from Bruce Lee

or Helen Keller

[–]fjellfras 17 points18 points ago

This is probably not going to be a popular opinion here but I read one zenpencils strip a few months ago, really liked it, then I rushed through the archive, and I progressively hate that guy more with every strip.

Why? He shits over "normal" people in literally every cartoon. He tries to say again and again that someone who was, say, an accountant wasted their life and someone who was climbing rocks in the amazon did a lot better.

I think this perception is flawed and not everyone has the same goals in life. A simple life, well led, is by no means a failure. Worse still, I feel he sometimes twists quotes by great people to somehow conform to his views though I cannot point to exact quotes, eg see the Invictus strip, twisted the stoic, grim determination of the poem to some fucked up view of psychopathic violence.

That said some of his strips are really good and have affected me deeply, I still read every new strip.

Of course it may be that I have mistaken his intent but I doubt that is the case.

[–]turkletom 6 points7 points ago

I see your point. It is easy to interpret his comic in multiple ways. However you should know that the quotes are reader submitted -he picks the ones people want to see drawn.

The purpose of the comics is to inspire people. Inspire to take a chance, to be more open minded, to learn, to stand up against oppressing forces in their lives and see that only they have the power to change whatever they want changed.

Of course, the quotes will be about remarkable people doing incredible things, because those are the ones we find inspiring. He doesn't shit over regular people, this whole thing is FOR regular people who are unsatisfied with their lives. Seriously, like half of the comics are about finding a job you love, no matter how regular that job may be. There's nothing wrong with being an accountant, if you want to be an accountant. However if you're constantly bitching about hating your job, this comic IS giving you shit for not doing anything about it.

The author had a miserable job, so he started the site as a fun side project and as it grew more and more popular he could afford to quit his job, and now he's doing this in full time. That's where his attitude comes from.

[–]ThisIsNotMyRealLogin 5 points6 points ago

I had never heard of this site before. After your comment, I went there, and almost the first one I picked from the archives was this one:

http://zenpencils.com/comic/71-oswald-chambers-mountains-and-valleys-2/

which seems quite the opposite of the first part of your critique.

[–]HelloNiceToBeHere 1 point2 points ago

I can't speak as to the general attitude of the author, but I definitely agree with fjellfras' comment on the ZenPencils "Invictus" comic. It makes the poem look like one about revenge, WTF? That's not what I see in it at all.

[–]Superhuzza 2 points3 points ago

No, the poem isn't about revenge at all. What the poem and the strip have in common is someone taking control of their life despite having a hard time. Just because the example used in the illustration may involve revenge doesn't mean he's twisting the poem's meaning.

[–]fjellfras -1 points0 points ago

How does it not twist the poem's meaning? He superimposed the poem with a gruesome display. Shackleton wasn't being bullied in the schoolyard, he had his limbs cut off after suffering from lifelong tuberculosis. The strip cheapens the greatness of Shackleton's ode to resilience of the spirit by doing what it does.

[–]Superhuzza 0 points1 point ago

First of all, who's Shackleton? And Henley only lost half a leg.

Secondly, I'm fairly sure the poem was written in a way that lets it be applied to many situations. It isn't just about tuberculosis. It's about resilience and I believe the comic displays that.

[–]fjellfras 1 point2 points ago

First of all, who's Shackleton?

Yeah my bad, it's too early in the morning for me, I'm not sure what I was typing there, not even sure where the word Shackleton came from in my head. Anyway my perception about the comic strip is that it is not about resilience.

It is about resorting to violence after being bullied, a situation which has nothing in common with what the poem was about. But I think that arguing about the sense of a poem is not something that will come to a definite conclusion, we all make different sense of pieces of literature and what I said is just what I took away from it. I do still have deep reservations about the way the author used the poem though.

For the record I must add that the reason I hate that specific strip is that Invictus has a personal importance to me because I read it as a teenager when I was quite troubled for various reasons (similar to what is shown in the strip) and it gave me a lot of strength to move ahead past the problems I had then, so my opinion is heavily biased.

[–]Superhuzza 1 point2 points ago

Honestly I think we'd probably agree about the meaning of the poem. I think we'd disagree as to the morality of the kid's action, and there's no way I'm getting into that now. I see where you're coming from though. Let's just agree to disagree

[–]fjellfras 1 point2 points ago

I actually do not disagree too much on morality of the kid's actions either, standing up to bullies and fighting back is something I certainly admire, and I do not have a problem with the specific cartoon taken by itself as a one off. The sequel is what troubles me with the whole blinding someone with a hammer. I think that one went overboard.

[–]fjellfras 1 point2 points ago

You picked the only one then. See these:

1

2

3

The absolute worst of them all, in my opinion (lest anyone think so I am not an accountant) :

4

[–]Pardomatas 3 points4 points ago

I think you're taking the symbolism to literally. Like you said, maybe accounting is the mountain of my life; doesn't change the message of the comic.

[–]fjellfras 1 point2 points ago

That may be a possibility, I agree.

[–]elfgod 4 points5 points ago

This is the one I found most motivational:

[–]Cameronious[S] 2 points3 points ago

Hey, thanks for giving the credit! I always agree that the artist should be given credit, although the original link didn't come with any!

The fact that it generated so much karma makes me feel kind of dirty for it... Thankyou!

[–]iwasnotarobot 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for linking to the original. :)

[–]AlexMD6 24 points25 points ago

Am I the only one that wants to know how to buy tears?

[–]DudeWithTheNose 20 points21 points ago

[–]jimgress 4 points5 points ago

this is from Zen Pencils. Great motivational art there.

[–]andycyca 0 points1 point ago

Second this. Pretty much all the site is either inspirational, food for thought or both

[–]remembertosmile 4 points5 points ago

During the Space Age, he was later to be recognized as the founding fathers of modern rocketry. This was years after his death.

Thank you Robert Goddard, your legacy will forever live on.

[–]JennyBeckman 0 points1 point ago

I looked him up on Wikipedia and his occupation is listed as 'rocket'. Brilliant. I didn't have the heart to edit it.

[–]CajunTurkey 3 points4 points ago

Zenpencils.com just got a new fan :)

[–]blackdoctormd 2 points3 points ago

ahh... I went to Robert H. Goddard middle school! This guy is my hero <3

[–]Jaffacakelover 0 points1 point ago

It looks like his grave is in the blast zone.

[–]QuadraticProbe 2 points3 points ago

"If I can impress upon you only one idea... Let it be that the people who make this world run, whose lives can be termed successful, whose names will go down in the history books, are not the cynics, the critics, or the armchair quarterbacks. They are the adventurists, the explorers, and doers of this world. When they see a wrong or problem, they do something about it. When they see a vacant place in our knowledge, they work to fill that void. Rather than leaning back and criticizing how things are, they work to make things the way they should be. They are the aggressive, the self-starters, the innovative, and the imaginative of this world.

Every generation has the obligation to free men’s minds for a look at new worlds... to look out from a higher plateau than the last generation. Your vision is not limited by what your eye can see, but by what your mind can imagine. Many things that you take for granted were considered unrealistic dreams by previous generations. If you accept these past accomplishments as commonplace then think of the new horizons that you can explore. From your vantage point, your education and imagination will carry you to places which we won’t believe possible. Make your life count – and the world will be a better place because you tried."

— Ellison S. Onizuka

[–]TheNewVanguard 2 points3 points ago

For copying and pasting:

"It is difficult to say what is impossible. For the dream of yesterday is the hope of today, and the reality of tomorrow" - Robert H. Goddard

[–]eoliveri 2 points3 points ago

Now we need a cartoon praising von Braun and his London-smashing rockets for getting us to the moon.

[–]Ezili 1 point2 points ago

I was a different boy when I descended the tree from when I ascended. Existence at last seemed very purposive

[–]brawnkowsky 0 points1 point ago

Failure Crowns Enterprise

[–]whatudrivin 1 point2 points ago

And all I can think of is October Sky.... Wonderful movie! Deff give it a watch if you can spare the time.

[–]rumpltrumpl 1 point2 points ago

Did you end up selling the tear back?

[–]sladoid 0 points1 point ago

Damn... Just imagine if he gave up on his dream..

[–]SimplyHuman -1 points0 points ago

What a joke, hate can become love for the hateful. And the hated can become loved.

[–]fallen79 -1 points0 points ago

I am a proud student at Goddard High School in Roswell NM. He was truly a Badass

[–]shetaron 1 point2 points ago

Why can't you just link to Zen Pencils site? It's a great comic full of all kinds of motivational proverbs and images and they deserve the views. Why post it to imgur? I just don't get it.

[–]slobodon 1 point2 points ago

Still don't understand why nicholas cage is a part of this

[–]JamisonKrig 0 points1 point ago

"The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way. He lives and labors and hopes."

--Nikola Tesla, "Radio Power Will Revolutionize the World" in Modern Mechanics and Inventions (July 1934)

[–]neonraisin 0 points1 point ago

Tears ain't cheap.

[–]-JS- 0 points1 point ago

We're just on that pale blue dot though, this shit don't matter!

[–]DAV3Y 0 points1 point ago

Yeah man, what's with newspapers dedicating full pages to calling a specific scientist ridiculous

[–]Kehndy12 0 points1 point ago

I just scanned the Wikipedia page. "A Severe Strain on Credulity" was an actual unsigned editorial in the New York Times.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Goddard#The_New_York_Times_editorial

[–]speaktodragons 0 points1 point ago

Apollo 18?

Fuck Mars.

[–]pooponascoop 0 points1 point ago

I did a book report on a book about him in the 5th grade called "books alive".

[–]romag14 2 points3 points ago

BROUGHT!!!

[–]Plurity -2 points-1 points ago

This brought a tear to your eye? really?

What is it with people on reddit these days posting about how they cry about little things, is that the new cool thing to do?

[–]colourz 2 points3 points ago

Seriously what a pussy

[–]justinm715 -1 points0 points ago

Like you just don't know how to be grateful and appreciative for dreamers, dreams, accomplishments, and reality, man. Surely watching the Curiosity landing was an uplifting and emotional ride even if you don't understand the technical aspects of the feat. At least for most of us

[–]theovermind 2 points3 points ago

[–]CummingEverywhere -2 points-1 points ago

How much did it cost?

[–]s4r9am 8 points9 points ago

Worth every penny.

[–]pelicansjourney 0 points1 point ago

My middle school was named after him, and I had no clue why or why our mascot was some rocket thing. This makes me happier about being a Goddard Titan. :)

[–]Champhall -2 points-1 points ago

Does anybody else think Goddard in this comic looks like Hitler?

[–]Supajin -5 points-4 points ago

This doesn't seem really motivational, but it is a good story nonetheless!

[–]Goretrait 11 points12 points ago

I think it's a different kind of motivation. The motivation that even if you're not seeing the results immediately, pursuing the goal at hand may lead to results you'll never see but will very much be there.

Or even shorthand: Every contribution you make, every step you take towards a dream has potential to do something much larger than you thought.

[–]Sirvadi 4 points5 points ago

Are you kidding!? This is what gets me up in the morning! We can send things into space, not just some genius somewhere but people like you and me. Both my grandfathers worked on the space program and I intend to continue of the tradition of kicking ass with science and technology to make our time here well worth living.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Not for anyone motivated by mere selfish ambition.

[–]tikkio93 -1 points0 points ago

Beautiful.

[–]bob5142 -1 points0 points ago

Amazing....
