He's nuts if he thinks he can pick up that aircraft carrier with that little cable.

[–]cuntarsetits 66 points67 points ago

Yeah, all the planes will just fall off into the ocean. He needs at least three more cables to keep it level.

[–]Xx420xcirclejerker69 14 points15 points ago

Technically he only needs 2 more cables if they happened to be indestructible.

[–]GitEmSteveDave 18 points19 points ago

They'd have to be made of pure Diamondium.

[–]Xx420xcirclejerker69 15 points16 points ago

You wish your Diamondium was strong enough you old hag. Diamondillium all the way bitches!

[–]GitEmSteveDave 6 points7 points ago

Wernstrom!

[–]omicron8 3 points4 points ago

Technically he just needs one in the center of mass but realistically three to stop rotation on all three axis.

[–]effingposers 2 points3 points ago

No, aircraft are tied down with chains to padeyes on the deck. The deck does not need to remain level, those aircraft are secure.

[–]THE_REAL_NIPPLE_KING 0 points1 point ago

But Derek it's just a model

[–]HurricaneHugo 7 points8 points ago

He's just trying to trip the aircraft carrier like an AT-AT.

[–]buckie33 2 points3 points ago

He has to climb down it! And you thought those rope climbing lessons in gym was a waste of time!

[–]dangolo 1 point2 points ago

what's the point of the cable, BTW?

[–]Patriot029 78 points79 points ago

Regardless of your views of the military, you have to admit that aircraft carriers are amazing pieces of technology. I mean its a flippin' airport sailing around in the ocean.

[–]Budddy 46 points47 points ago

I certainly hope it does not flip.

[–]thedrew 7 points8 points ago

I hope it doesn't sail.

[–]burgess_meredith_jr 1 point2 points ago

I hope I can make it across the border.

[–]ungus 43 points44 points ago

[–]NotThisTimeDave 20 points21 points ago

...and 4.5 acres of US Sovereign Territory.

[–]flukz 1 point2 points ago

And the only country in the world that fields them. And we have eleven.

[–]gamelizard 7 points8 points ago

i am always amazed by how balanced those fuckers are

[–]alwaysdriven 8 points9 points ago

[–]gamelizard 6 points7 points ago

that thing looks like its going sideways and still not falling over. balanced as fuck.

[–]alwaysdriven 10 points11 points ago

For sure. I live on one.

[–]ryumast3r 3 points4 points ago

My grandpa used to live on one. Then he transferred to a destroyer. He said that, by comparison, the Destroyer made him sea-sick because he wasn't used to "so much rocking". Then we went on minesweepers, he said he'd rather have bombs flying at him than be on those ships again.

Congrats on being on one of the most badass ships in the entire fucking world, gamelizard.

[–]accountnotfound2 8 points9 points ago

More like a mini city with the airport on the roof.

[–]verstand 12 points13 points ago

In the Navy, they're affectionately referred to as "4.5 acres of sovereign and mobile US territory deployable anywhere in the world".

[–]thedrew 18 points19 points ago

*Except land.

[–]Heelincal 6 points7 points ago

For now...

[–]genericname12345 3 points4 points ago

Someone at DARPA just smiled and said 'Challenge accepted.'

[–]danceswithwool 25 points26 points ago

It's more like a full scale war at your front door at any moment. And the US has about 10 of those monsters.

[–]Titanosaurus 23 points24 points ago

USA has 11 Supercarriers. 10 Nimitz class carriers and 1 Enterprise Class, that is set to be decommissioned in 2013. The USA has 3 Gerald Ford Class carriers under construction, and planning to build 6 more.

[–]phycologist 11 points12 points ago

Don't forget the amphibious assault ships. If it carries a harrier, it's an aircraft carrier.

[–]alwaysdriven 3 points4 points ago

Same with helicopters. Can't forget all of those HSC guys.

[–]mainsworth 52 points53 points ago

They're used for more than war.

[–]NotThisTimeDave 35 points36 points ago

Thank you. Give this guy more upvotes. US Supercarriers have saved countless lives in disaster situations.

[–]indyK1ng 2 points3 points ago

I have a friend who suggested we just use the old nuclear aircraft carriers to provide power to third world countries at low cost. Just keep a good sized contingent to defend the ship and keep it seaworthy.

[–]deinem 4 points5 points ago

Interesting, for some reason I thought the US had more. I was thinking like 50-100.

[–]branbm3 21 points22 points ago

Nope, but we have more than the next 5 countries...combined

[–]branbm3 24 points25 points ago

And all the others too

[–]xCry0x 6 points7 points ago

50-100 sounds familiar for the total number of carriers made as opposed to active carriers.

I remember making some joke about this to someone from Canada when they argued that our military (US) doesn't keep them (Canada) safe.

[–]Bugseye 0 points1 point ago

CVBG's could annihilate entire countries if necessary. That is scary.

[–]invalid_password 6 points7 points ago

Runway 69. Alriiiiiiiiighty then.

[–]ryumast3r 3 points4 points ago

That's because they fuck whoever pisses them off.

[–]damnshecrazy 0 points1 point ago

Interned at the place that builds these over this past summer... Got to tour the new CVN 78. Pretty awesome!

[–]CausticPineapple 0 points1 point ago

Sometime during WWII someone had an idea. The idea was a massive floating aircraft carrier, a portable airfield, capable of delivering, "direct to your door", a small fleet of the most powerful vehicles known to man . This person was brilliant.

It amazes me how often I see proof of reposts on stuff I've never seen before. I mean, just a month ago and 1700 points but I never saw it? I thought I was addicted to reddit, but I'm still just in training.

[–]SteelCrow 32 points33 points ago

Don't blink. Don't look away.

[–]BattleClown 10 points11 points ago

Exactly what I came in for when I realized how tiny the original was. Appreciated!

edit: who would downvote giving thanks? Perhaps the OP upset over letting me down?

[–]knivesngunz 49 points50 points ago

Sail on, dear bot. You're doing the lord's work.

[–]seaweed420 26 points27 points ago

I have actually repaired the main propulsion systems on the carrier. Goo ole Ike. Out of all the carriers I have worked, this is my favorite.

[–]MrStevenRichter 16 points17 points ago

When you say 'propulsion systems' you're talking about the 4 propellers that come out from beneath it that allow it to fly, right?

[–]alwaysdriven 5 points6 points ago

Yes.

[–]AnticitizenPrime 4 points5 points ago

He's obviously talking about either the impulse engines or the warp core.

[–]WhatamIwaitingfor 2 points3 points ago

I think a lot of people in this thread are missing this point...

These things are a testament to the ingenuity of humans... everything about these ships is supersized, over-engineered, and perfected through rigorous testing/maintenance.

[–]alwaysdriven 0 points1 point ago

Shipyard or Navy? ... or both? I got to operate them, just not that one.

[–]critercat 15 points16 points ago

Am I the only one who thought he was pissing on the carrier?

[–]deadly_fox 13 points14 points ago

Its just not the same without F-14s on deck :(

[–]bstone99 7 points8 points ago

sexiest jet ever made

[–]Fudanchi 8 points9 points ago

You're right. It's better without them.

[–]andrewsmith1986 37 points38 points ago

I wonder how much money is in that photo.

[–]mainsworth 61 points62 points ago

Probably about 6 billion. 4.5 for the carrier, 1.5 for the accessories.

[–]Fudanchi 4 points5 points ago

I think you're underestimating by quite a bit. A carrier isn't just a boat with jets on it. You also have to consider the cost of training the thousands of crew members. Not just their salary but the cost of training them, loss of revenue when they're in tax free zones, special pay, feeding them, and also the cost of operating the aircraft. Fuel, replacement parts, tech reps. It's much more expensive than the metal you see in the picture.

[–]mainsworth 8 points9 points ago

Yeah you're right. I'm not a budget supervisor for the military so my numbers are a bit off.

[–]mrizzerdly 1 point2 points ago

why is this getting downvotes?

[–]sirblastalot 6 points7 points ago

Maybe people thought he was sarcastically making up a really high number? 6B sounds plausible to me.

[–]Bidock_Pajama 8 points9 points ago

For that matter it sounds like he's lowballing (a lot).

[–]lyricalsaint 5 points6 points ago

Negative, he is pretty spot on.

[–]sometimesijustdont 1 point2 points ago

We need to cut funding for Big Bird so we can buy 33 more of these my friends.

[–]Acheron13 10 points11 points ago

Not much more than PBS as far as the yearly budget.

Average annual life-cycle cost of Nimitz class carrier $ 444 million

http://www.fas.org/programs/ssp/man/uswpns/navy/aircraftcarriers/cvn68nimitz.html

Currently, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s annual budget is $422 million.

http://screenrant.com/pbs-funding-cuts-cpb-mcrid-106473/

[–]deinem 10 points11 points ago

Not sure if this makes the floating-airport-of-death seem cheap or Terry Gross seem overpaid.

Either way, great comment.

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 0 points1 point ago

I know everyone is in love with PBS right now but just one carrier is more integral to our society than a TV network like PBS.

[–]davideo71 1 point2 points ago

Look out, someone stole the future of a few cities worth of your children and is sailing away with it!

[–]deja-vu-comment 34 points35 points ago

69 tee hee

.

[–]Caketent 0 points1 point ago

i came here fully prepared to say the exact thing, you're too quick deja-vu-comment!

[–]Xx420xcirclejerker69 0 points1 point ago

So you came here to say this?

[–]Caketent 3 points4 points ago

its the only reason i turned on my computer

[–]Leek5 3 points4 points ago

Whoa I'm getting vertigo.

[–]youdoneyo69 6 points7 points ago

I build those :-)

[–]lifeformed 12 points13 points ago

can you make me one

[–]youdoneyo69 4 points5 points ago

Yeah if you've got $13.5 billion and a lot of time lol

[–]app1esauce 7 points8 points ago

The Ike, my second and final ship. After spending three years and decommissioning the Kennedy (CV-67) the Navy sent me to this ship. It was much cleaner than the Kennedy but crew and the heart just wasn't there. Plus Norfolk sucked so hard.

[–]Gandjr 1 point2 points ago

I did a deployment on the Ike myself. If I am not mistaken that is a pick from my old commands helo, HS-5. That is our command logo on that aircrews head

[–]ITworksGuys 2 points3 points ago

SAN DIEGO BITCHES!!!!!

I got the Nimitz, everyone else got Norfolk ships. It was a sad day for my buddies.

[–]twisted42 1 point2 points ago

Norfolk did suck. Hated living on the ship there. Hated living out in town there. Populace really didn't like sailors there.

[–]Constantroaming 3 points4 points ago

I always found it odd that Norfolk had such a quiet dislike for the Navy. I get it rowdy sailors and all but remove the Navy from Norfolk and the town would loose a fortune.

[–]twisted42 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. Maybe if I lived in a town with a large population of transient people who trashed the town all the time I would feel the same way.

I know a guy who told me he hated the Navy guys around because he ad 3 daughters. Seems a lot of the girls in town would aspire to marry a Navy guy, get knocked up, and then be able to milk him for life. I couldn't argue his point on that one as I had seen it happen all the time. Not really what you want for your daughter.

[–]twisted42 4 points5 points ago

I served on this ship as an RO in the mid 90s. Glad to see this image of the old girl.

[–]fridayfred3p 4 points5 points ago

i did a two week stint to qualify on this ship, it was the nicest ship I ever been to and the nukes weren't uptight like others places i've been.

[–]twisted42 2 points3 points ago

yeah, when I was on the ship the nuke crew was pretty good and laid back. However, when I was leaving the culture was changing... and not for the better.

[–]weedroid 1 point2 points ago

What's the plane in the middle that looks like it's wearing a beret? Some kind of radar thing?

[–]jardeon 8 points9 points ago

E-2C Hawkeye or similar; the Navy's answer to the E-3 AWACS

[–]weedroid 0 points1 point ago

I see! The folded wings are a nice touch.

[–]WhatamIwaitingfor 2 points3 points ago

They pretty much have to have foldable wings on a carrier - space is obviously a huge concern.

[–]dimebagellefson 2 points3 points ago

Is it normal that all I can think of when I see this picture is shouting "CANNONBAAAAAAALLLLL!!!" and jumping?

That would be so cool, provided you didn't die or anything.

[–]soulessystem 2 points3 points ago

whats the cable for?

[–]sparkitect 3 points4 points ago

My brother is on this ship as we speak!

[–]powerchicken 2 points3 points ago

Speach-to-text program?

[–]Jevia 3 points4 points ago

Uhg. My fear of heights just kicked in full force.

[–]pemble 0 points1 point ago

I don't know when my fear of heights started up that picture freaked me out too

[–]thirdfounder -2 points-1 points ago

my knees go a bit wobbly just looking at the photo on reddit. lots of nope documented here.

[–]alexthetiger -1 points0 points ago

shove whistle suspiciously

[–]lussie 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit I might actually have a heart attack just looking at this.

[–]daschnookle -2 points-1 points ago

Hah I see the number

[–]UnoriginalMike 1 point2 points ago

And now spit.

[–]HandyCore3 2 points3 points ago

Man, it must really suck for the guy parked in the back when he has to leave.

[–]diggitydan 0 points1 point ago

jet traffic jam. how do they or what do they do with that many jets parked on the runway like that?

[–]yermahm 0 points1 point ago

That makes me woozy. When I was younger I never had an issue with heights. I'm in my 40's now and they make me very uncomfortable. That video that made the rounds of the guy climbing that communications tower? I couldn't sit through the whole thing. Weird.

[–]Goldenelm 1 point2 points ago

Lol 69...

[–]LiteRobot 0 points1 point ago

And here my first thought was "Somebody's taking a leek from an helicopter down on an aircraft carrier."

[–]yelo_canu 0 points1 point ago

I would shit my pants.

[–]sneezylee 0 points1 point ago

As someone who hasnt enrolled in the navy i can imagine what the radar system technology in this beast must be like.

[–]iHeartCoolStuff 0 points1 point ago

Thought he was taking a piss at first

[–]DroodEdwin 1 point2 points ago

Whoa, you guys forgot to unplug it before take off

[–]Underbarochfin 0 points1 point ago

The pilots who parked there are pretty skilled

[–]The_One_Above_All 0 points1 point ago

Chinese military: We wish we had planes on our aircraft carrier :-(

[–]accountnotfound2 1 point2 points ago

I went skydiving for the first but not last time yesterday. Made me want to jump.

[–]nismo9 0 points1 point ago

Made me kinda dizzy.

[–]j2bv16 0 points1 point ago

Nice eyes

Sent from Reditr

[–]SuperBlarg -1 points0 points ago

I do not understand how "What a view" means what it does. I know what it implies but it does not make sense to me grammatically. What? a view!

[–]RebelTactics 0 points1 point ago

If you'd like to see jets like this in action come over to /r/CombatFootage.

[–]PlusOn3 0 points1 point ago

[–]Werchio 0 points1 point ago

Of some reason, I think that they are all women on this aircraft carrier...

[–]stonedchao 0 points1 point ago

thats a lotta money just floating out there in the middle of the ocean.

[–]zulubowie 1 point2 points ago

That ship's number is 69.

[–]huzwrighte 0 points1 point ago

is that the one from the avengers?

[–]ltredbeard -1 points0 points ago

i laughed when i saw the runway number

[–]ScottTracey -1 points0 points ago

Word

[–]occamsshavingkit -1 points0 points ago

You want a view? Try the one from the side level giving these babies jp5 and dfm (fuel).

[–]obzen22 1 point2 points ago

What a helmet

[–]mysticbasist 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who kept staring at the eyes?

[–]GrayStudios 0 points1 point ago

Metal Harbor anyone?

[–]kamakaro -1 points0 points ago

32 F's ready to fuck shit up.

[–]AccountCreated4This -1 points0 points ago

Spent four years on this ship. If you look at the design on the helmet that is the emblem for the "Night Dippers". They are a SAR (Search and Rescue) squadron attached to the ship. I maybe mistaken, but it looks to me that they may be doing a search and rescue for a man overboard drill.

[–]spike003 0 points1 point ago

Spawn green.

"Stand by for....BARRRFFFFF....let's try that again stand by for the.....BARRRFFFFFFFFFFFF.....shit....I need a desk job"

[–]dealaus 0 points1 point ago

what kinda equipment they got there?

[–]sami3121 -1 points0 points ago

Haha 69

[–]otomotopia 0 points1 point ago

Out of pure curiosity, does anyone have an idea how many billions of dollars of equipment is present in that shot?

[–]bastardos 0 points1 point ago

I always look at this pic and think about Valet parking....

[–]Loud_Hawk 0 points1 point ago

I think the special forces at the end of the rope have and even better view. This is part of a Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction exercise.

[–]Superduperscooper 0 points1 point ago

[–]peterjoel 0 points1 point ago

I would totally take a piss right there.

[–]baconpatroller 0 points1 point ago

That's a great lego kit, looks very realistic

[–]Unalive 0 points1 point ago

That helmet looks stoned.

[–]MankeyManksyo 0 points1 point ago

We can pay for that, but not Bigbird....

[–]lzpj 0 points1 point ago

Sleep well tonight, Americans. I will.

[–]Rescueswimmer85 0 points1 point ago

I just uploaded my aircraft carrier picture. This is actually called SPIE rig. Special purpose insertion and extraction used for inserting troops into mountainous terrain that helos can't get into. Fun and scary as hell. Great for constipation if nothing else.

[–]guitarelf 0 points1 point ago

I totally thought this was an image of the lego aircraft carrier..then I saw the rope

[–]Arknell 0 points1 point ago

Chopper Helmet does not approve of me... 8'-(

[–]munge_me_not 0 points1 point ago

I was on the Ike in the 90's. The best part about that ship was their all night cold cuts, soup and chili bar. I loved it because I worked night ops topside and it was hard to get food at night. On other carriers we had to either have broken up sleep to get one of the regular three meals or sneak food to our racks.

[–]ichigo2862 -1 points0 points ago

Man if I weren't a sad sack of shit I would totally sign up for the Navy. I fukken love warships.

[–]frostysnowcat 0 points1 point ago

I like that the number on the ship is "69". Go Navy.

[–]crugerdk 0 points1 point ago

call of the void.

want to jump so badly!

[–]Zaphod1620 0 points1 point ago

Serious question: why do they bring up all the planes to the flight deck like this? I've seen plenty of pictures of aircraft carriers in this configuration, but what is the purpose? Febreezing them out? Second question: is that all the aircraft that particular carrier has?

[–]Jim777PS3 0 points1 point ago

One point of karma to the person who tells me how much money we are looking at down there!

[–]klondikethedestroyer 0 points1 point ago

69!

[–]skynxx 0 points1 point ago

Hey your Seahawk's drooling!

[–]Plethorian 1 point2 points ago

1 lonely EA-6B,wings folded. Another in the hanger bay, broken. One more up in the sky somewhere on coverage, along with at least one F/A-18. Not to mention the attack sub hiding underneath.

[–]MOX-News 0 points1 point ago

Can someone give a backstory to this photo?

[–]ohhrhys 0 points1 point ago

ha 69...

[–]48for8 0 points1 point ago

Another reason North Korea isn't allowed on the internet. I wouldn't want my poor little solders to know about these things either.

[–]MilesColtrane 0 points1 point ago

fuck, I love America

[–]listen_god_damn_it 1 point2 points ago

The most amazing part is that it looks like they're conducting SPIE Rigging drills. If so, those are men on the end of that cable.

Edit: well, I guess I was right. This photo is in the wiki article I just linked.

Don't mess with our commerce, or we'll send a steel neighborhood to the ocean near you, except it's not a normal neighborhood because we took all the nice people out and replaced them with disproportionately poor and angry and young people, who should be angry at us for putting them in a floating steel box rather than giving them real prospects for happiness in life but instead have been taught that YOU are to blame for what is bad in the world, so they're angry at YOU. Oh and wherever they don't need the space to live and cook, we packed in explosives for them to play with.

Seriously. Just let us exploit you. We're telling you this for your own good.

[–]Poujakar 0 points1 point ago

How long would it take to launch all of the planes on this ship? Would they ever launch all of them? Are there emergency exercises to practice launching a massive assault or do you mainly focus on squads/wave type launches?
