  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

The title reminds me of when people say ATM machine...

[–]Shagomir 13 points14 points ago

Come on, not everyone knows that "foss" is Icelandic for "falls".

[–]MrBrawn 3 points4 points ago

PIN Number

[–]b1rd 0 points1 point ago

Or if you're Canadian, SIN number, "Social Insurance Number number"

[–]SimonSays_ 0 points1 point ago

I'v always said PIN code.

[–]isaackleiner 1 point2 points ago

Mine is "hot water heater."

The ‘F’ in PDF does not stand for file

[–]fadedseaside 0 points1 point ago

Oh hey, good point.

[–]SimonSays_ 1 point2 points ago

I'm not quite sure how it would help to save it as a Portable Document Format file...

[–]JohnnyTightlips 1 point2 points ago

[–]effegenio 1 point2 points ago

Automated teller machine machine?

[–]JimJamJamie 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of when someone has a mini-stroke at the keyboard!

[–]FOUR_YOLO 1 point2 points ago

Or they were trying to say a sensible, pronounceable name for the waterfall and someone punched them in the stomach.

[–]ThorIsMyRealName 2 points3 points ago

It's very sensible and pronounceable in Icelandic.

[–]TristanTheViking 0 points1 point ago

It's pronounced Foss. Almost like loss.

[–]ThorIsMyRealName 0 points1 point ago

I know that. Look at my name.

[–]modestproposal81 1 point2 points ago

"7 a.m. in the morning" <- Causes me to experience a completely irrational amount of rage.

[–]dom65659 11 points12 points ago

"Oh, we're Iceland and nobody else is allowed to be able to pronounce our place names!" Racists.

[–]stormtroopin 3 points4 points ago

I went to Iceland a couple weeks ago. I still have no idea how to pronounce the name of the hotel I stayed in...

[–]Morgothal 0 points1 point ago

If you know the name and really want to know how to pronounce it I can help you with that.

[–]stormtroopin 2 points3 points ago

I do! It was Centerhotel Arnarhvoll. For some reason, every time someone said it, it just didn't sound anywhere close to how we expected.

[–]Syntaxis 7 points8 points ago

Okay, so there's 3 non-English things happening here. In Icelandic:

  • The r is rolled (very subtly)
  • "hv" is pronounced "kv"
  • "ll" is pronounced "tl" (there's no vowel between the t and l)

Also keep in mind the Icelanders speak on the tip of their tongues so lots of sounds get "dropped" in quick speech

Edit: I've added a vocaroo to help you out. Mind you I'm a foreigner who's only been studying Icelandic for 5 or 6 months so my speech is far from acceptable by Icelandic standards. Arnarhvoll

[–]Morgothal 0 points1 point ago

Your bulletpoints are spot on. Your pronunciation is pretty close but your hvoll is a bit off. This is how I pronounce Arnarhvoll.

[–]Broddi 1 point2 points ago

There is a fourth thing as well in the way Icelanders pronounce "n". In this case, the n would sound like a "dn" to a non-icelandic ear. So to break it down the pronounciation would be something like Ar-dnar-kvotl

[–]Broddi 2 points3 points ago

It´s actually pretty easy. It´s pronounced Sel-ya-lands-foss.

[–]Jeppep 2 points3 points ago

Don't see a problem here.

/Norwegian

[–]kheltar 0 points1 point ago

We got lost looking for our hotel, so we called them. First question was what road are you on, had to spell it out to him...

[–]palinola 18 points19 points ago

[–]Number127 8 points9 points ago

Heh, I was going to post my pics, but then I click on yours and see myself!

Hello, person on that 4x4 tour who I'm trying to figure out who it is through process of elimination!

(And yes, that ill-advised trek behind the waterfall was absolutely fucking terrifying!)

[–]Jerry_say 1 point2 points ago

I walked behind in May and was fucking terrified.

[–]BlackIsis 2 points3 points ago

Don't be such a baby. It wasn't that bad! Plus, it wasn't winter...it was October! Barely fall!

And hello palinola, whoever you are, and I think I know who. :)

[–]Number127 2 points3 points ago

You're only off by five months! It was March!

[–]palinola 2 points3 points ago

More like March, but I didn't feel like qualifying my seasonal label.

;)

[–]BlackIsis 0 points1 point ago

Grrr...crap. I couldn't remember if that was after they moved FF or before. Dammit. :)

[–]palinola 1 point2 points ago

<.<

>.>

And yes, it was rather perilous.

[–]PISS_OUT_MY_DICK -2 points-1 points ago

Down for maintenance?

[–]klausjensendk 7 points8 points ago

Coolest thing about this waterfall is, that you can actually walk behind it.

[–]ONOOOOO 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, it's pretty awesome, a bit annoying when you get fucking soaked from standing too close though!

[–]InfernoAcid 6 points7 points ago

Yeah that happens with waterfalls these days. Fucking republicans.

[–]MeesterGone 1 point2 points ago

On a boat ride at Disney World that went behind a waterfall, the guy who operated the boat got a few laughs by saying: "Now here's something you don't see everyday, but I do: the back side of water"

[–]MrPuffin 3 points4 points ago

As an Icelander with the first name Brynjólfur, I can confirm that is exactly how my parents named me.

[–]IIdsandsII 1 point2 points ago

Is that pronounced brin-yole-fur?

[–]joobia 1 point2 points ago

I am pretty sure the fur is pronounced vur, since the f is in the middle of the word (and not next to an N, which would then give it a b sound.)

[–]Chesner 1 point2 points ago

You are correct.

I'm Icelandic AMA!

[–]joobia 1 point2 points ago

I thought so! My Icelandic isn´t great, but I at least have gotten the names down.

[–]IIdsandsII -1 points0 points ago

damn, that's crazy. sweet language.

[–]Woolbull[S] 1 point2 points ago

Vikings... Don't question the spelling

[–]Hitno 1 point2 points ago

As a neighbor to Iceland I agree on this.

[–]Izawwlgood 4 points5 points ago

The way the picture is taken, I'm having a really hard time getting a sense of scale

[–]elj4176 2 points3 points ago

Here's 2 I took while there this summer that should help with the scale

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss

Awesome pic by the OP.

[–]IIdsandsII 0 points1 point ago

ya, the saturation scale.

[–]elj4176 1 point2 points ago

Don't make me reach for the saturation slider ;)

[–]ForHumans 1 point2 points ago

I took these from the other side and behind the falls back in July.

[–]snowyredbeard 3 points4 points ago

Foss means falls. So the title should be Seljalandsfalls, Iceland

[–]Goldmattress 3 points4 points ago

My family owns the land this waterfall is in, this is an official cease and desist.

[–]Hitno 2 points3 points ago

Trespassers will be shot, survivours will be shot again!

[–]JamesOfTheYear 2 points3 points ago

shit's cool yo

[–]StephanoUSA 0 points1 point ago

But where's the ice?

[–]I_Promise_I_Am_Lying 2 points3 points ago

I wanted to see what it would look like without people.

[–]theonlyfatbastard 2 points3 points ago

Seljalandsfalls falls....

[–]Coffeeey 0 points1 point ago

Compared to Dettifoss and Skogarfoss, Seljalandsfoss ends up as kind of boring. If you tilt the camera a bit to the left, you'll see a camping and a bunch of busses.

[–]Era_Ojdanic 2 points3 points ago

About Seljalandsfoss Falls, more photos here and map. I am in a good mood today, enjoy the pictures and information guys.

[–]Timibumatay 1 point2 points ago

That's a lot of green.

[–]jeepchick13 0 points1 point ago

That's a lot of mowing going on there!

[–]ncastleJC 0 points1 point ago

A cliff diver's dream...or nightmare....depending on your perspective...

[–]Bizzatch 1 point2 points ago

Is that dude taking a leak?

[–]PlusMinusZero 1 point2 points ago

My new ritual is to find scenic landscapes to gaze upon as I poop.

[–]papertygur 1 point2 points ago

I need to travel more...

[–]smallz503 1 point2 points ago

Seljalandsfoss.

[–]johndeer89 1 point2 points ago

[–]smallz503 1 point2 points ago

Soooo... John Deer.... I hate to break this up... but, are you the color that Billy-Bob chose to paint with on the water tower to impress Charlene?

[–]johndeer89 1 point2 points ago

Common misconception. I'm johndeer, that was john deere. I get that all the time.

[–]smallz503 1 point2 points ago

Ah yes. Thank you for clearing that up for me.

[–]floxyz 0 points1 point ago

This is just one of the many beautiful waterfalls on iceland! There are so much more and they are all amazing!

[–]wffoss 1 point2 points ago

Awesome! My last name is Foss so it's good to see something nice associated w/ it.

[–]Argit 1 point2 points ago

Foss = waterfall in Icelandic.

[–]Hitno 1 point2 points ago

Faroese and Norwegian as well

[–]BLVD 1 point2 points ago

I would like to go visit, but long ago I was advised against pursuing waterfalls. I was told to visit the tributaries and bodies of water that I am familiar with.

[–]goridread 0 points1 point ago

I really need to start posting pictures from my trip to Iceland.

[–]copadick 1 point2 points ago

Iceland is by far of of the most intriguing places I've ever been. Can't wait to go back

[–]RyanSmithN 1 point2 points ago

Not one comment about Minecraft. Until now. This reminds me of Minecraft.

[–]black_rayne 0 points1 point ago

i want to be there!

[–]Fuzzy-Panda 0 points1 point ago

Awesome, I've been there too... High Five!

[–]MestR 0 points1 point ago

I've been there, it's so cool.

[–]Spaghettihouse 0 points1 point ago

Needs more HDR and saturation.

[–]foonchip 0 points1 point ago

Under there must be the entrance to the center of the Earth!

[–]aracer 0 points1 point ago

I'm in awe of the striking greenery surrounding the waterfall, I'm usually used to rocky surroundings rather than that deep green. Stunning!

[–]Alphadanny96 0 points1 point ago

I'm going with my college next year around spring. I can't wait and this is one of the many places we'll be visiting, it looks unbelievable.

[–]shoesh 0 points1 point ago

Why is everyone always so spread out in this pictures?

[–]frasier_crane 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure this is Heaven.

[–]Aishiteruu 0 points1 point ago

Looks like the suits from HGTG is working there

[–]Dkai1 0 points1 point ago

This really looks like it is moving to me even though I know it is just a static frame...

[–]I_Saw_Drones 0 points1 point ago

What texture pack is this?

[–]Petsl 0 points1 point ago

Went there in 10th grade, and definitely going back some day. Truly a magical country!

[–]hijessicarose 0 points1 point ago

"Seljaovfidsv aww pretty water."

[–]skbo 0 points1 point ago

Iceland! So many good memories…

[–]WitchDr 0 points1 point ago

[–]tokyocarnival 0 points1 point ago

Fucking right. In other news, great math.

[–]WingZero1 0 points1 point ago

That fucking looks magical! FUCK!

[–]thelbane 1 point2 points ago

In that one beautiful scene in Contact where Ellie says they should have sent a poet... you.

[–]Lyianx 0 points1 point ago

This demands High-Res!

[–]Broddi 0 points1 point ago

I notice that usually when someone posts a pic from Iceland, there are many who comment on how icelandic names seem to be long and incomprehensible. In case you are wondering, the reason for their length is the fact that in icelandic it is common to add words together to make names, along with the descriptions like mountain, river, falls, glacier etc.

Here´s how famous American names would look if english had this tendency as well; Niagarafalls, Rushmoremountain, Mississippiriver, Siliconvalley. You get the picture.

Perhabs the most famous example is the wonderful Eyjafjallajökull. The name translates to "the glacier atop the Island Mountains". Or Islandmountainsglacier, if you prefer. :)

[–]CDUB23 0 points1 point ago

Needs more boobs

[–]r912j530 1 point2 points ago

Bullshit, you just made that name up..

[–]brobl 0 points1 point ago

been there.

[–]Fuzzy-Panda 0 points1 point ago

When I was there it was so windy that about half the water was getting blown back up. The wind was over 100mph.

[–]Chesner -1 points0 points ago

Button up your shirt!

[–]UnbreakableNokia 0 points1 point ago

Aw this reminds me of the amazing two weeks I spent driving around Iceland last year. Best trip ever. If you ever want a real adventure get yourself good gear, rent a 4x4, go with someone that knows how to drive offroad properly and head off on one of the most exciting trips you'll ever have!

[–]icanbeyourhero 0 points1 point ago

Jump and do a flip!

[–]surely-you-jest 0 points1 point ago

Regarding these titles, do people just randomly bang their keyboards and put Iceland at the end?

[–]Ak74udieby 0 points1 point ago

this looks like a Minecraft waterfall

[–]IrritableGourmet 0 points1 point ago

When this was posted on /r/EarthPorn, I removed the people.

[–]TheVictoryHat 0 points1 point ago

" lol guys lets name it this"

[–]planetyonx 0 points1 point ago

It's pronounced Steve.

[–]bcrout 0 points1 point ago

After sex piss

[–]aussietin 0 points1 point ago

why is everybody wearing red?

[–]Mindcraft74 0 points1 point ago

Bless you.

[–]bruuuu 0 points1 point ago

I tried to pronounce this at work, people ran away thinking theres a terrorist in the office

[–]Ballersock 2 points3 points ago

Oh, good ole Iceland with it's scenic view at Asjhdfuoahe, its lovely waterfalls at Ajksldfjioeaw and who can forget the food in its culture capital, Jyjyjkykyjyjkyk.

[–]70000 0 points1 point ago

As opposed to Greenland which is a Icey wasteland

[–]fettsack 0 points1 point ago

Been there, done that. This angle is nice because you can see that there's a trail going all around it.

[–]TheTrueIrishMan 0 points1 point ago

I have no clue why there is a sudden increase in Ireland, and pictures of it, but I like it!

[–]aracer 1 point2 points ago

True Irishman eh? Not that true, as this is in ICELAND.

[–]MrPuffin 2 points3 points ago

Well he's probably drunk and read it wrong...so the name still holds ground.

[–]TheTrueIrishMan 1 point2 points ago

What? I am not a munk, nor am I on holy ground.... Your reply makes no sense, sir.

[–]TheTrueIrishMan 0 points1 point ago

Heh, I think I clicked the wrong post... Honest mistake.

[–]tankwala -1 points0 points ago

Why is Iceland all green and Greenland all ice?

[–]CoyoteStark -4 points-3 points ago

Seljalandfoss simply translates to water falls.

[–]Argit 8 points9 points ago

Uh no. Foss is a waterfall. Seljaland is a farm, and the waterfall is in the lands of Seljaland.

[–]Number127 -2 points-1 points ago

Well, it does!
