Let x be the total number of points scored by students in this class, and let y be the number of students other than this hapless fellow. Then x/y is the average without his 0, and x/(y+1) is the average with it. This gives us the equation x/y - 8 = x/(y+1).

This reduces this to x = 8y(y+1) [wolframalpha]. Hence, x/(y+1) = 8y.

That is to say, the average score with the 0 is 8 times the number of other students. But since the average can't be more than 92 (since the max score is 100 and the 0 dropped the average 8 points), there can't be more than 11 students in this class, not counting "Michael".

A 12-student freshman-level communications course. Sure. Must be a tiny college.

EDIT: Fixed link.

I think this guy deserves more than 4 upvotes. I mean.. look at the effort he put into that shit

[–]aragorn18 49 points50 points ago

Especially when you consider the whole post is fake.

[–]n-space 15 points16 points ago

I'm just adding to the pile of evidence.

[–]Mr_Fasion 2 points3 points ago

Not to mention "Professor" used a comma instead of a colon. This isn't a friendly letter.

[–]wrincewind 1 point2 points ago

Well, I think we can forgive him his poor skills at communicating in english. After all, he's not a professor of English, he's a professor of ... oh.

[–]Hippokrates 14 points15 points ago

Yeah, I go to Wentworth Institute of Technology, its a pretty small school, my intro to mechanical engineering class had 12 students, and my engineering calc 2 had 16 students. I don't think 12 students is unlikely.

[–]WhatIsInternets 13 points14 points ago

Yes, but were the exams in your 12-person class scan-tron?

[–]103020302 6 points7 points ago

Why wouldn't a 100 question test be scantron? If the school has a grader, then its incredibly less time spent on grading a test.

[–]WhatIsInternets 2 points3 points ago

I have never seen an intro mechanical engineering exam with 100 questions. They tend to run in the 3-10 question range, depending on material, time available, etc. But this is a pointless discussion. Truly, we have better things to do.

[–]Dr_Doctor_McDoctor 2 points3 points ago

I don't think I've ever seen an "intro" class under 50 people.

[–]Morphyism 2 points3 points ago

My philosophy intro class had 12 people in it...

[–]ThatsPopetastic 2 points3 points ago

I've had a few that were 10-20.

[–]throwawayneu 1 point2 points ago

WE WILL BUY YOU ALL ONE DAY

[–]goblinpiledriver 2 points3 points ago

My school has some pretty small courses. Our CS department has like 5 or less people in upper level courses.

[–]gheost 0 points1 point ago

Same here. I am in community college.

[–]featherknife 0 points1 point ago

x/y - 8 = x/(y+1)

shouldn't it be

x/y - 0.08 = x/(y+1)

?

Edit: I think it makes more sense if 'y' is the total number of points possible:

x/y - 0.08 = x/(y+100)

[–]n-space 5 points6 points ago

Sure, if I meant for the average to be a percentage, then 1 would be the max score, and the difference would be 0.08.

If y is the total number of points possible, then you have the same equation I have, but each term divided by 100 (which multiplies y by 100).

[–]gheost 0 points1 point ago

There are only 7 people in my communications class.

[–]zippe 1 point2 points ago

Hold on. How did you just solve a two variable equation for both variables without using a second equation?

[–]javajunkie314 0 points1 point ago

I believe it was implicitly used that 0 < x, 0 < y, and x/y <= 100. Given these and x/(y+1) = 8y, WolframAlpha finds exactly 11 integer solutions, for y = 1 through 11.

[–]n-space 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Basically, I didn't really solve it, I just used the x/y <= 100 inequality to establish an upper bound for y.

We can even get a better lower bound for y if we assume that the professor's statement about no score being below 65 also applies to this class, in which case 65 is a lower bound for the average as well. 65 <= x/y = 8(y+1) implies y must be at least 8.

[–]oskarege 1 point2 points ago

No one noticing the part about the teacher saying something along the lines of "Getting one QUARTER of the replies right" when in fact there are five options...

Intro Communications 101

Professor

That's pretty indicative of a college course. Given the huge amount of compression in that image, /u/n-space's math, your lame falsehood of your excuse, and the fact that this is a repost, I conclude that this is a big piece of bullshit.

Intro to Communications 101? No high school would offer college credit for such a worthless class.
I have a Communications Degree and have literary paid for the right to declare 90% the courses worthless.

[–]mbrodge 0 points1 point ago

B.

[–]djbriandamage 33 points34 points ago

What was that one job?

[–]LATKE_IN_MY_TUCHES 1 point2 points ago

To guess an answer choice that was actually present on the exam to begin with?

[–]peterohsx -1 points0 points ago

No, that is not the job of a student.

[–]LATKE_IN_MY_TUCHES -1 points0 points ago

But if his only objective is to just guess and hope for the best, then his one "job" is to guess an answer choice that's actually on the exam (so in this case, guessing either of A or B).

I love a good sleuth.

If anyone is wondering what memefan1999 said click here.

I only removed them because I wanted as few references to this image as possible.

I can't figure out what NYCItaliono's point is or why you are getting downvoted

Don't worry, I got the reference :) Billy Madison was my all-time favorite movie as a kid. Watched it literally every night on VHS until it gave out from overuse.

you are a faggot

[–]Blackboxeq 6 points7 points ago

this image is a complete fake, and let me tell you why. Scan trons return a red mark with the correct answer when you grade them. if the teacher was grading them by hand he is a retard.

[–]pacman9269 2 points3 points ago

Wouldn't be too hard to grade that test by hand considering none of the answers were even valid

[–]XooDumbLuckooX 2 points3 points ago

It was common practice to hand-grade Scantron sheets in the college I attended. Lazy profs and TAs would rather just hand those out than make up their own test for every student.

[–]billbrasky87 5 points6 points ago

05/01/07. If you have been on the internet since then you have seen this before. If not, welcome, you'll enjoy the porn and jokes.

[–]woooooh 2 points3 points ago

nice job leavin his social security number on it

[–]seethesquirrel 2 points3 points ago

Whoever originally posted this picture didn't even blackout Michael's name.

In the last decade there has been a policy of not using social security numbers as student ID numbers. I don't know if that is the effect of a law or just universities getting wise.

[–]irving47 0 points1 point ago

Well, there's still a chance that's what it is... Somehow, I doubt this fellow is on the 4-year plan.

[–]seethesquirrel 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure it is a social security number too.

[–]AMindBlown 1 point2 points ago

So Mike how'd you feel about that one?

"I said fuck it and put 'C' for every answer. I'll at least get some of them right."

But Mike... it was all true and false...

"Son of a bitch!"

[–]mbrodge 0 points1 point ago

We had a saying when I was in the AF: "When in doubt, Charlie out; True or False, Bravo's boss" It has served me well over the years.

[–]Septembersrain 1 point2 points ago

Genius. I bet his parents were proud.

[–]Jokuki 1 point2 points ago

Of course they are, their baby is in college!

[–]StealthRabbi 1 point2 points ago

Heh, even put C for the test form. What a doofus.

[–]Nebz604 1 point2 points ago

Old urban legend.

[–]PapaRich_1 0 points1 point ago

I hope that's not his SS#. Somebody should fix that.

[–]mccahan 0 points1 point ago

Too many numbers, SS numbers have nine digits.

[–]PapaRich_1 0 points1 point ago

Isn't the ID# 9 digits?

[–]jaysan1292 1 point2 points ago

But the number on the test form does have nine digits!

Also, it's more likely that's his student ID or something.

[–]notoriously_late 0 points1 point ago

As someone that has worked at multiple universities over the last 20 years, I'm almost positive that the studentID is a SSN (assuming this is real.) Universities took way too long to remove SSN's from most official student records. FERPA-Final 2008 started to put the pressure on schools to change asap.

[–]MemeFan1999 -2 points-1 points ago

I deleted the post in case, and messaged a few mods to have the image removed. I troll, but I'd rather nobody get hurt.

[–]kire73 1 point2 points ago

Repost. And you left an ID number. might not matter cause this could be so old that student isnt enrolled anymore...or its fake...but still...

[–]caribou16 0 points1 point ago

I once had a scantron test with 100 true and false questions. The first 99 were false, the last was true.

Prof was a dick.

[–]berkelium247 1 point2 points ago

A relatively simple test in Communications 101? I'm pretty sure the most complicated communications test is simple.

[–]luveroftrees 0 points1 point ago

micheal the moron.

You might want to black out his SSN. That guy that posted his SSN to an ad promoting his credit secure company got hacked 9 times what hope does this poor retard have?

[–]RandomPerson200 1 point2 points ago

  1. Why was his student id "typed" in?

  2. If it is scantron why is the final grade written at the top?

[–]fizikz3 0 points1 point ago

wow....how fucking stupid do you have to be to not even look at question one before going "fuck it, im putting C for everything"

[–]laz-y -2 points-1 points ago

In 12th grade chemistry, I got 0/10 on a True/False quiz (though somehow finished the class with a B average).
