The air is actually nitrogen that keeps the chips fresh. But I lol'd.

[–]Dumpin 250 points251 points ago

It also prevents the chips from turning into dust during transport.

[–]unclepickle1 269 points270 points ago

I know the air in the bag is important, but I am about 120% sure that they're taking advantage of that. I think they're putting one less chip in each bag every year.

[–]Ice_tail 306 points307 points ago

"Tell us about when they put more than one chip in the bags again grandpa!"

[–]unclepickle1 197 points198 points ago

Go ahead, mock me.

IT'LL HAPPEN. ONE DAY KIDS WILL BE SAYING THIS.

[–]mwmwmwmwmmdw 9 points10 points ago

one day it will be cheaper to make your own chips

[–]Utenlok 23 points24 points ago

It already is. Potatoes cost next to nothing. Ten pound bag for $1.99

[–]dogpaddle 15 points16 points ago

Pretty much anything is cheaper to make yourself.

[–]Acolyte666 14 points15 points ago

With manufacturing what it is today, that's wildly untrue. I dare you to make a particle accelerator yourself. Or a CPU. Or a tin can. Or a screw.

[–]dogpaddle 17 points18 points ago

I guess I meant foodwise.

[–]xrelaht 3 points4 points ago

I dare you to make a particle accelerator yourself.

Done it. What's next?

[–]Dsullivan777 0 points1 point ago

Provided you have the same resources as the manufacturer of such things, you'd spend less making it yourself. I think he means that the cost of labor and such makes up a good portion of the cost.

[–]HellsGuardian 0 points1 point ago

Not the first time though, if you need to buy all the spices and maybe even a fryer. Sure you could bake em, but does that really get the job done?

Also, I know it's just salt but i mean for everything else you need the spices n shit. First time you make chili, it's like 30-40 dollars, then every time after that it's under 10.

[–]geekwalrus 0 points1 point ago

[–]Wwwi7891 2 points3 points ago

Except you can really only use very young, fresh potatoes to make good chips.

[–]Lettuce_Get_Weird 94 points95 points ago

"You used to have a choice, Timmy. Why, sometimes we would share a bag---two or three people!"

"All your friends are dead now. Fuck you Grandpa "

[–]Everybodys_Mom 16 points17 points ago

"Now drink your grape drink"

[–]pokurmom 6 points7 points ago

"jesus juice"

[–]Everybodys_Mom 9 points10 points ago

"Now now kids, your grandfather is tired and needs to practice with his new robotic face, leave him alone"

[–]Muzilos 6 points7 points ago

"Ha, grandpa needs to practice with his new robotic face! I thoughts everyone was born knowing how to use them"

[–]Everybodys_Mom 0 points1 point ago

Well you thoughts wrong dear. That isn't getting you out of cutting the grass today though.

[–]PhantomSwagger 1 point2 points ago

What's grass?

[–]Everybodys_Mom -1 points0 points ago

exactly.. forget to water something this month?

[–]snowlion13 1 point2 points ago

didnt someone post a few days ago of a small potatoe chip bag that only had one chip in it?

[–]Crook3d 14 points15 points ago

They're making all our schools smaller too. I went to visit my elementary school, and it's way smaller than when I went there.

[–]Father_Ted_Crilly 19 points20 points ago

We actually put the amount in the bag by weight, not by appearance or by fill. So the weight on the front of the bag is what you will be getting, barring any mistakes.

[–]Quaytsar 16 points17 points ago

They're decreasing the weight without changing the bag size. You used to be able to buy the snack size (90g), regular size (150g), large size (300g) and family/club size (400g). Now there's snack size (80g), regular size (200g) and family/club size (300g). They haven't changed the sizes of the bags or decreased the prices.

[–]Nelvardik 6 points7 points ago

That's because of consumers and inflation. It's less headache for them and consumers if they lower the size of the package and charge the same than if they raised the price for the same amount. People who buy their products seem to be more receptive to paying the same for less and are pretty much against paying more for the same.

Look at deodorant for another example of this.

[–]californicat 3 points4 points ago

Also, Hershey's changes the amount of chocolate they put in their bars, depending on the price of chocolate. This is so that they can keep the price low enough for vending machines.

[–]acdcfanbill 2 points3 points ago

is that why hershey bars suck now? that and they don't come wrapped in foil inside a paper sleeve :(

[–]Fuckin_Hipster 0 points1 point ago

So I should buy the regular size?

[–]dogpaddle 2 points3 points ago

We have the snack sizes at work. It's the hugest ripoff, $1.00 for maybe 10 chips.

[–]holyice7 1 point2 points ago

I dunno, Ted; those bags don't weigh very much. I mean, how much does one chip weigh? Pretty much nothin'. You're just buyin' a bag o' nothin'.

[–]snowlion13 0 points1 point ago

but they charge more by using the appearance of a larger bag regardless of contents

[–]guruchild 4 points5 points ago

Weigh the bags. While they routinely downsize the bags and charge the same or a higher price, the chips you get is very close to what is stated.

[–]I_BOIL_RATS 13 points14 points ago

I like to take a pocket-sized digital scale with me when chips shopping or buying generally anything sold in bags.

[–]guruchild 4 points5 points ago

I thought I was the only one!

[–]spizzat2 2 points3 points ago

Take your bag of chips to the produce section.

No need to bring your own scale.

[–]Hawkleer 7 points8 points ago

But imagine just how much of a douche you'll look like putting your sealed bag of chips in the produce scale.

[–]Lurking_A_Lot 5 points6 points ago

I'm not sure standing in the chips aisle weighing bags with a personally brought scale to try and get 5 extra grams is much better

[–]TheFreeloader 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was universal everywhere in the world for food retailers to be obliged to have accurate information about the weight of a product on its packaging. As with ingredients and nutritional information.

[–]Mylon 0 points1 point ago

Several years ago I had a goldfish package that stated it contained <0 grams of sugar. Typos exist.

[–]frader12 2 points3 points ago

Don't they write down the weight on the bag? It would be pretty obvious to tell in that case.

[–]Munkir 1 point2 points ago

And you just take there word for it?

[–]frader12 0 points1 point ago

There are laws against false advertising.

[–]juma606 1 point2 points ago

Nah it's legit. So is the "enlarged to show texture" photo on the product. Lays is lookin' out for us. :)

[–]Supahh 0 points1 point ago

120% sure.

[–]TheFreeloader -1 points0 points ago

Yea, and generic brand chips usually have more filled bags, while the chips are usually no more damaged than those in less filled more expensive chips bags.

My guess is that it is because buyers of generic brand chips buy on price/weight ratios, and therefore it isn't a good idea to pay for shipment of air to them.

[–]jokygabble 0 points1 point ago

A Swedish manufacturer of matches did something like that, instead of raising the prices, he just removed one match from each box made. Very profitable.

[–]aydiosmio 0 points1 point ago

google grocery shrink ray.

There's more interesting themes at work. The cost of items must continually rise over time due to inflation, assuming no significant advances in production efficiency. The problem with this is the psychological issues tied with nice round numbers. The "$.99" bags of chips can't be $1.29 because the price point puts the product at a disproportionately lower appearance of value, no matter how much the bag actually weighs for the most part. So you put less in the bag over time, sell different sizes for different convenience levels -- until people are ready to accept a new base price point.

This is a continuous cycle in food products and it's extremely well studied.

Edit: Oops, Quaytsar said basically the same thing

[–]GeminiCroquette 0 points1 point ago

Bags of chips definitely suffer from the grocery shrink ray. Nowadays a "family" bag is around 14 - 15oz and a "standard" bag is 8 -9 oz. Back in the 90's the standard bag was 14 oz or so and there was no family bag. Prices were much lower too, the bags were $1.50 each, now a standard bag of lays is $4.29

FOUR MOTHERFUCKING TWENTY NINE?

[–]KingNick -1 points0 points ago

*Chip

[–]heylookitsmykel 0 points1 point ago

And it also prevents you from getting a good deal with a bag of chips.

[–]zimbabwe7878 1 point2 points ago

I also saw that recent TIL post.

[–]Matt-the-hat 0 points1 point ago

They put them in boxes to stop that.

[–]Yummyberry 9 points10 points ago

Nitrox scuba diving uses a blend of oxygen and nitrogen, it's the perfect explanation.

[–]DeanOfScience 20 points21 points ago

All scuba diving uses a blend of oxygen and nitrogen. Normal scuba diving just uses regular air, approximately 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Nitrox uses more oxygen and less nitrogen to decrease the amount of nitrogen absorbed into your blood and increase your no decompression bottom time.

Also, no you can't use pure oxygen. It becomes toxic at depths under 6m or somewhere around there.

[–]I_Was_LarryVlad 3 points4 points ago

Can you explain the reason why pure oxygen becomes toxic there?

[–]Zurmakin 5 points6 points ago

Oxygen Partial Pressure increases as you dive deeper under water. It can cause the body to go through central nervous system (CNS) failure. Deaths from this are not usually caused by the CNS failure itself, but the diver will convulse, spit out the regulator, and breathe in water resulting in drowning.

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 1 point2 points ago

Oxygen Toxicity

Pure O2 is dangerous at 1 atmosphere too. It's only given when the patient has had smoke inhalation or something like that in the lungs where you need a pure O2 for the tissues.

Pretty much, if need it, you have a deficiency of it. If you don't need it, it will rot your tissues.

[–]zelmerszoetrop 0 points1 point ago

So why was Apollo 1 filled with pure O_2?

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 2 points3 points ago

It was initially to reduce weight. After the fire, they went with a 34% mix.

O2 contributes to combustion obviously.

[–]THEdNtS 1 point2 points ago

Which is why although you can dive longer on nitrox, you can dive deeper on regular air :)

[–]DarkTwist 1 point2 points ago

I love how I knew that oxygen becomes toxic at certain depths. I just finished reading Sphere and they talked about it there. Along with needing to be decompressed after staying underwater for a long time.

Cool. Cool cool cool.

[–]Ravenhaft 0 points1 point ago

Man, I remember teenage me reading that book, then watching the awful, awful movie they made.

[–]DarkTwist 0 points1 point ago

Oh god... While I was reading it I thought how cool a movie could be if they did it right. I never thought to check if they actually made one.

Now I have to watch it.

[–]Ravenhaft 0 points1 point ago

You're going to be so very disappointed.

[–]LarrySDonald 0 points1 point ago

"All" isn't entirely true, some people dive with various mixes of helium. I think there are some other gas mixes too. But rarely for non-commercial dives, so yeah, for all non-complicated purposes mostly N/O.

[–]sexual_pasta 2 points3 points ago

I think that even the helium mixes still have nitrogen, it's called trimix, they just replace some of the nitrogen with helium to get a lower amount. But I'd bet that there still might be some super high pressure mixes with no nitrogen.

[–]LarrySDonald 1 point2 points ago

Heliox is just He/O. Though yeah, it's usually all three in various ratios. I don't know that much about it, I never went beyond normal air. Just remember having it mentioned here and there and the dive masters here and there discussing their other complicated and/or commercial dives they're planning or have finished.

[–]Superplaner 0 points1 point ago

You're absolutely right, Heliox is used in commercial diving, particularly during saturation diving, usually as a hypoxic gas (oxygen content so low it can't be used at shallow depths). It's pretty damn rare to encounter recreational divers using Heliox though, it's damn expensive and really only used for saturation diving.

[–]Khuskan 1 point2 points ago

Normal air is a blend of oxygen and nitrogen.

[–]art13 2 points3 points ago

And pollution!

[–]judgej2 1 point2 points ago

I use a blend of oxygen and nitrogen too, and I don't even scuba dive.

[–]Scarecrow398 0 points1 point ago

Came here to say this, so instead have a upvote.

[–]MFNoire 2 points3 points ago

air is 78% nitrogen

[–]Taterizer 0 points1 point ago

Damn you beat me too it.

[–]yeerk72 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say that!

[–]mercilus_ 1 point2 points ago

I was told it was argon, because it's non-reactive.

[–]Hate_Manifestation 1 point2 points ago

It can be either, but for future reference, N2 is treated as an inert gas in most applications.

[–]mercilus_ 1 point2 points ago

Yes, but it's not as totally non-reactive as the noble gasses.

[–]Hate_Manifestation 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but it is intensely cheaper.

[–]TodTheTyrant 1 point2 points ago

yeah we all saw that post too.

[–]picado 1 point2 points ago

They're experiencing nitrogen narcosis, the rapture of the deep.

[–]JonaldJohnson 0 points1 point ago

Typical SCUBA mixture is 80% Nitrogen and 20% oxygen.

[–]Superplaner 0 points1 point ago

Typical scuba mixture is normal air.

[–]Osmyrn 1 point2 points ago

Air 71% Nitrogen, close enough?

[–]jojjo223 0 points1 point ago

Well that would of given a different result...

[–]slippp40 162 points163 points ago

It's always awesome when you buy a bag of air and get some Lays chips in there

[–]woflcopter[S] 71 points72 points ago

pringles, man. pringles.

[–]dninel 51 points52 points ago

5$ can of pringles or 1.5$ party size lays bag?

[–]woflcopter[S] 97 points98 points ago

you bring up a good point, sir. But pringles taste better and you can be mega man once you finish.

[–]3rd_degree_burn 25 points26 points ago

Freakishly small hands? Mine haven't fit in there since I was 15 or so.

[–]woflcopter[S] 29 points30 points ago

or hitting people. Don't forget that.

[–]3rd_degree_burn 11 points12 points ago

Touché, woflcopter. Touché.

[–]vofgofm33 3 points4 points ago

The caps make great frisbees

[–]GramarBoi 8 points9 points ago

When my brother and I were kids, we used to fart in the can and the close it. Then we will give it to one of our friends who will open it. Good ol' fart times.

[–]woflcopter[S] 1 point2 points ago

GENIUS

[–]maynardftw 0 points1 point ago

Cardboard tubes are generally better for that sort of thing. Especially if you're a samurai.

[–]woflcopter[S] 1 point2 points ago

but you get a shorter cardboard tube BUT with food in it.

[–]maynardftw 2 points3 points ago

Samurai need no food! They survive on the FOOD OF BATTLE.

[–]woflcopter[S] 3 points4 points ago

what if there isn't anymore battle?

[–]Dreddy 0 points1 point ago

Yeah man, worse driving food ever after you have eaten the top 10 chips.

[–]Menospan 1 point2 points ago

The thing I hate about chips is the flavour collects on the bottom of the bag and not the chip. Which is why I like Pringles :p

[–]mainsworth 7 points8 points ago

What kind of cheapo chips are you getting where that's an issue?

[–]Everybodys_Mom 6 points7 points ago

That wasn't very nice of you to say. You should apologize...

[–]woflcopter[S] 1 point2 points ago

and if they have flavor, then it doesn't go to the bottom!

[–]kbilancini29 0 points1 point ago

Did you make this picture?

[–]woflcopter[S] 1 point2 points ago

to tell you the truth, no. Facebook helped me.

[–]kbilancini29 0 points1 point ago

I saw it on 9gag a week ago. Just testing your honesty!

[–]Mylon 1 point2 points ago

Taste better? All I taste when eating Pringles is corn.

[–]woflcopter[S] 2 points3 points ago

it's your opinion, man/madame :)

[–]rossryan 0 points1 point ago

Free Cantenna when you finish.

[–]stanss 15 points16 points ago

where do you buy your pringles? it's $1 per can when it's on sale in the northeast

[–]laughingGirls 9 points10 points ago

A can of pringles is like $1.50. When's the last time you bought some?

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 2 points3 points ago

$1.50 where I live cause I just bought some. Kind of expected them to be more. Maybe they were on sale.

[–]MaybeImNaked 0 points1 point ago

Nah, they're always around that price. $1 is usually sale price, it's $2 in most grocery stores, and some places are dicks that price the reduced fat versions at around $3-4.

[–]TheBigBanger 0 points1 point ago

[–]scubalovers4life 1 point2 points ago

Jesus man. Our Walmart has pringles for $1.50 a can. Where are you getting yours?

[–]bwcall 0 points1 point ago

You got the prices precisely backwards.

[–]OuchLOLcom 0 points1 point ago

But pringles are $1-$1.50 per can depending if you can find a coupon...

[–]VSFX 0 points1 point ago

the oz. don't lie

[–]brokendimension -1 points0 points ago

This joke was funny when I heard it the first 100 times.

[–]Ceejae 0 points1 point ago

I don't get why people complain about this. Don't you look at the weight of the bag of chips when deciding? Or do you honestly choose based on which has the biggest bag?

[–]23_47 26 points27 points ago

Lays chips bag is crushed at 3 atms.

[–]kekonn 10 points11 points ago

Why do I get the feeling you tested this thoroughly?

[–]23_47 11 points12 points ago

Anyone with knowledge of scuba would know that intrinsically.

[–]poompt 8 points9 points ago

Get a bit peckish down there without a delicious snack?

[–]LarrySDonald 2 points3 points ago

No, but it's a hassle with regular air - breathing it you use it up way faster when it's so much smaller from being compressed. Also the whole thing of not holding your breath so it won't expand and pop your lungs and the dissolved N2 in your blood needing to be kept track of so you don't overdo it and die. The whole "air becoming smaller/larger with pressure" is pretty much the #1 problem with diving.

Lots of people do take down stuff to depth just for laughs though just to giggle at how they react to pressure. A bag of lays would be a pretty cool option.

[–]an800lbgorilla 0 points1 point ago

In my Advanced Open Water course we took a bag of chips to 80 feet to observe the effect of the pressure on the bag. It looked like it was vacuum sealed.

[–]desktop_ninja 0 points1 point ago

source?

[–]libertytoons 25 points26 points ago

it always smells like a potato-y fart though... wouldn't want to breath it

[–]Schroedingers_gif 49 points50 points ago

The "bitch please" ruined it.

[–]quotejester 18 points19 points ago

Yup. Made it sound so /r/Iam14andthisisfunny.

[–]dragoninja24 4 points5 points ago

It's actually nitrogen in the bag. Oxygen would make the chips go bad.

[–]runnershighxc 21 points22 points ago

Was bitch please necessary

[–]Bryz_ 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, bitch.

[–]23_ 7 points8 points ago

Thanks Jesse

[–]entcyclopedia 0 points1 point ago

maybe its jesse

[–]Ferniff 3 points4 points ago

If Jesse was a sassy black woman from the Bronx.

[–]IronMikeT 6 points7 points ago

I found this funny and original. 9/10!

[–]atrowe 7 points8 points ago

The bags are filled with nitrogen to keep the chips fresh longer and to minimize breakage during transport to the store. Think bubble wrap. Air cushions the product.

Occasionally the amount of chips in the bag is adjusted up or down (usually down) for economic reasons, but the size of the bag itself is also changed accordingly.

Altitude affects bags of chips. Chips packaged in low altitude areas and then transported to high altitude areas look like they're about to burst, while chips packaged at higher altitude look kinda sad and deflated when taken down to a lower altitude. This is a big problem in the Rockies.

Source: I work for a potato chip company.

[–]MiniDonbeE 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, we can breathe nitrogen in, except it goes straight out, our cells need oxygen.

[–]Soluz 3 points4 points ago

Yes, yes, the bag contains Nitrogen, which is actually important. We get it. Can we enjoy the joke now?

[–]brookz 0 points1 point ago

mmmmm... chip scented air

[–]etobs13 0 points1 point ago

it is not oxygen in those bags its nitrogen

[–]quaint28 0 points1 point ago

When this gets reposted in a month and a half, I hope they rename it "scubag diving."

[–]23_ 2 points3 points ago

I.. Don't get it. Somebody?

EDIT WAIT, BECAUSE THE CRISP TO AIR RATIO IN A BAG IS DISPROPORTIONATE, RIGHT?

[–]Speeedo 0 points1 point ago

Why is there some chips in my packet of air?

[–]erbarad 0 points1 point ago

I read the title "Scumbag Diving" :|

[–]FakeSociopath 0 points1 point ago

And here I thought from the title this would be another Apple maps joke. Surprising.

[–]jamdaman 0 points1 point ago

It might make them a bit thirsty, hopefully they're scuba diving in fresh water...

[–]Coronos 0 points1 point ago

I feel like drowning would be a less painful experience if you're thirsty. That's why everytime I go swimming I bring a bag of potato chips.

[–]jturgeon228 1 point2 points ago

It's actually nitrogen, that keeps the chips from going stale.

[–]n343 0 points1 point ago

That awkward moment when you buy a bag of air and they put chips in it

[–]AMoldyPotato 0 points1 point ago

Damn this is a really good one

[–]dashdanw 1 point2 points ago

I always used to get pissed at this but when I went to the cape cod chip factory they explained that they have to pump it like a balloon so that it acts like a big bubble wrap to cushion the chips or else they get all crushed.

[–]rossryan 0 points1 point ago

And yet, surprisingly, not a problem for chips such as Grandma Utz. Me thinks the marketing crew of most chip makers has the public believing what they like.

[–]dashdanw 0 points1 point ago

well cape cod ships are made of steel practically so for them it's definitely BS, but i can see that for something like lays

[–]TerryArchi 0 points1 point ago

I don't get it, what's scumbag about this?

Edit: Nevermind.

[–]ladybuoy 1 point2 points ago

The joke is that there's a lot of air instead of chips in lays bags.

[–]NurseJenny 0 points1 point ago

Ah...thanks, because I really didn't get it.

[–]rediesel 0 points1 point ago

we should get one big chip the size of the bag
