I'll just leave this here.

[–]scrash 67 points68 points ago

It's weird how dancing to music is so natural. I wonder why we dance.

[–]toekneebullard 28 points29 points ago

Because it feels awesome. As an adult you forget that, because you're too self conscious to just do it without caring.

[–]SingingPenguin 56 points57 points ago

so thats why we dance when drunk...

[–]centipedeseverywhere 25 points26 points ago

Ding ding ding!

[–]Catacronik 7 points8 points ago

As an adult, I still dance without caring. Not all adults are self conscious.

[–]Muzilos 4 points5 points ago

You are self conscious, but you do not feel embarrassed by your dancing because you are confident in your skills.

[–]Catacronik 0 points1 point ago

I'm confident in my skills now because I have been dancing for some time (not seriously). When I first started I still didn't care about what I looked like - and I know I looked like a tool.

[–]jesticle 0 points1 point ago

What if I know I'm a bad dancer but couldn't care less?

[–]Muzilos 0 points1 point ago

Being bad doesn't make you less confident. You're confident that you're bad.

Many people refuse to do some things because they don't want to raise or lower expectations.

[–]funkbefgh 15 points16 points ago

Not necessarily natural. Who knows how many times Daddy has played songs for them, let alone what Mom and Dad are doing behind the camera to encourage it. I'm more interested in the look they give each other beforehand... adorable, and surprising.

Edit: I'm not saying dancing is unnatural just that this dance could have been learned.

[–]badmustache 25 points26 points ago

The relationship between our sympathetic nervous system and music is very well known. Concepts of rhythm in time develop well before we can cognitively understand the mathematical language that describes them.

What should demonstrate that fundamental understanding of music is naturally linked to motor skills, isn't that they are dancing or making a particular gesture, but doing it fairly well in time with the rhythm of the music.

If I had my Aniruddh Patel book I would give you relevant research.

[–]funkbefgh -1 points0 points ago

Sure, but each individual is going to respond to music and rhythm in their own way. I was merely suggesting there is no way to know if this was the way they danced from the start or if it is a learned behavior we are watching.

Also, I don't see them doing anything in time with the rhythm of the music. They are swaying completely randomly: first too quickly and then too slowly. It should also be noted that some people have no rhythm whatsoever, so dancing with the beat would be impossible for a certain percentage of the population at any age.

[–]ChrisHernandez 13 points14 points ago

You are talking about white people, huh?

[–]badmustache 4 points5 points ago

I completely understand that you are responding to scrash's comment about 'dancing' which can be interpreted as referring to the specific gestures and motor actions of the kids, which, as you say, are probably learned. Something as basic as swaying like these kids are can be argued over, but it's not something that I can or I suppose anyone would claim with scientific authority.

When I read scrash's comment though, I interpreted it to mean motion in conjunction with music, not 'this' dance, as you conceded in your edit.

Watch again, and watch the one on the right and snap your finger to the beat of the guitar, it's pretty damn close.

It should also be noted that some people have no rhythm whatsoever, so dancing with the beat would be impossible for a certain percentage of the population at any age.

This is a dubious claim. Motor skills take practice, that doesn't mean that our nervous system isn't hard wired to understand rhythm in time.

[–]funkbefgh 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I guess I missed the general nature of his statement. I would still argue those girls are swaying pretty randomly, but that it doesn't really matter - especially at that age.

I would say my claim is not dubious at all. Rhythm can be innate to varying degrees, but it is largely learned. Some people will simply never practice it and others will try and give up. Again, unless you are actually playing the music, or are very sensitive to insults, it largely isn't necessary to have rhythm anyway.

Because it feels good and it's good for you.

[–]new-socks 0 points1 point ago

I don't know but my parents tell me that once they were listening to the album Graceland by Paul Simon and I started to dance to it at like age 1. I now love Paul Simon, have seen him live, and am a musician. I can't dance for shit though haha.

[–]Tmeesseman 1 point2 points ago

Because the rhythm is gonna get you.

[–]thewanderer64 -1 points0 points ago

Define Dancing.

[–]pantheman0720 0 points1 point ago

Are we human or are we dancer?

[–]JesterOfDestiny -3 points-2 points ago

Music lovers tend to move in some way to good music. For example tap my foot or finger or if the songs is so good I bob my head too. On concerts, the adrenaline jumps and I headbang, dance or both.

[–]LadyGrizabella 1 point2 points ago

Even though I cannot and never have played the piano, I find myself 'playing' the piano on my steering wheel to certain songs.

[–]sniperwolf325 0 points1 point ago

I do play guitar and I find myself constantly using my notebooks, subway pole during my commute, desk, or something as a "guitar neck" and playing along to a song. Even though I don't play piano, I still do that to piano parts.

I have never seen anybody else doing that before, so it's cool knowing I'm not the only one.

Looks like that link is a re-upload. Here is the original version. It's the same video, but support the original uploader by watching that one instead.

[–]skrangle 0 points1 point ago

Thanks, I saw the video clip posted on a webbased, Norwegian newspaper a while ago, but didnt know who the original uploader was. The one I posted was the first I found.

[–]straightedgefred 2 points3 points ago

I really like that guitar part too. Wonder if it's a cover or something the father has made up. Maybe he's in a band. =)
