Why include the second picture? It's a terrible shoop.

[–]hatperigee 122 points123 points ago

For the same reason OP made up a title about blood boiling and brains exploding (ie. sensationalism)

[–]Failtoseethepoint 3 points4 points ago

That picture is from the daily mail

[–]WormSlayer 7 points8 points ago

Explains why it's so bad. Also; obligatory reminder not to link to that shit rag and give them any traffic!

[–]bvm 10 points11 points ago

Yup that looks like somewhere between LEO and GTO.

[–]onthefence928 2 points3 points ago

what is GTO again?

[–]RichLather 2 points3 points ago

Grand Theft Otto, duh.

[–]LetsGo_Smokes 0 points1 point ago

My name is Grand Theft Otto, and I like to get Blotto.

[–]Cyrius 4 points5 points ago

Geostationary transfer orbit. It's an elongated elliptical orbit that goes from LEO to GEO.

[–]onthefence928 0 points1 point ago

ah i should have guessed, i had a brain-fart

[–]zander_2 -1 points0 points ago

Or brain-explosion

[–]xrk 4 points5 points ago

Great Teacher Onizuka.

[–]pancakeTRAIN 0 points1 point ago

pretty sure you would burn up and die if you jumped from that altitude.

[–]OneSalientOversight 0 points1 point ago

Why include the second picture? It's a terrible shoop.

It's after he got blown upwards and into orbit.

Dear God, i've complained about the daily mail before...but that is an astonishingly bad article.

[–]blablablablabla78 0 points1 point ago

daily mail = yellow press

[–]mattverso 312 points313 points ago

one error and his blood would boil and his brain would explode

No, it wouldn't.

[–]spearmint_wino 282 points283 points ago

It would if his one error was to land in an active volcano.

[–]Maelstrom_TM 64 points65 points ago

Huh... I suppose OP didn't specify. You win this round of "Technically Correct: The Best Kind"

[–]Dentarthurdent42 15 points16 points ago

That statement made me think he was going to be riding on one of those newfangled locomotives

[–]monkeyfett8 25 points26 points ago

Exactly this. These things don't really happen if it were to happen in real space (i.e. orbit). I mean yeah, he might be hypoxic and pass out assuming a suit leak. However, probably nothing that would kill him immediately.

Well, besides an extremely sudden stop at the end. That is probably a real worst case.

[–]Howie_85Sabre 7 points8 points ago

an extremely sudden stop at the end

haha, I get it

I get it

[–]Zeihous 2 points3 points ago

You know what they say; it's not the fall that kills you.

[–]dmanww 1 point2 points ago

... It's your crazy ex

[–]16807 2 points3 points ago

Based on Project Excelsior, the real danger is going into an uncontrolled spin due to the lack of air resistance. That would cause him to black out.

[–]Calimhero 0 points1 point ago

nothing that would kill him immediately

No... But you're out in 30 seconds and dead in 2 minutes...

[–]Demasu 8 points9 points ago

If anyone's interested in what would really happen, I recommend reading this: http://www.geoffreylandis.com/ebullism.html

(phone so not doing a fancy link, sorry)

[–]SirNoName 0 points1 point ago

Do you remember the name of that guy who was in a vacuum chamber, and his suit sprang a leak?
Pretty good story.

[–]new_math 0 points1 point ago

Jim LeBlanc

[–]friendlypenguin 1 point2 points ago

Why do people need to sensationalize already incredible stuff? The very real danger in doing jumps like this is that you go into a flat spin and accelerate so fast that you give yourself a stroke, sever your spinal cord, or flatten your brain inside your skull.

[–]csirke4 0 points1 point ago

But what if he has a nuclear bomb in his pocket?

[–]mattverso 1 point2 points ago

Then his ass would explode.

[–]Hypericales -3 points-2 points ago

Mind blown

...i posted a response article under the top comment

No, you didn't. Also, use proper punctuation and capitalization, dullard.

[–]Cyrius 3 points4 points ago

Yes it would if his suit rips the lack of atmosphere and his speed would result in this to happen

No, it wouldn't.

[–]armstad 32 points33 points ago

Downvoted due to stupid title. That's not what happens in a vacuum

[–]RedditTreasures 61 points62 points ago

From Red Bull's channel

Mission delayed due to weather. Target launch now 5AM PT/12PM GMT on October 9! Watch it LIVE at http://youtube.com/redbull and http://redbullstratos.com

TL,DR: He hasn't jumped yet, 2nd pic is shopped & first pic is old (from 70,000 feet test jump).

[–]myrmecophilous 1 point2 points ago

yeah that second pic doesn't look remotely real. The curvature of the earth is all wrong; he would have to be way, way further than he appears in the first pic.

[–]PascalsLawl 0 points1 point ago

Mach 1?

[–]Rohm 26 points27 points ago

one error and his blood would boil and his brain would explode

How the fuck is this a thing people still believe?

[–]PyloniusMaximus 9 points10 points ago

It happened in Total Recall, why should we believe any differently?

[–]DirtPile 16 points17 points ago

This is the worst submission in the history of reddit.

[–]JesusChristophe 3 points4 points ago

It's bad, yeah. Worst on r/space in a while. But worst EVER? New to reddit?

[–]DirtPile 0 points1 point ago

Three years.

[–]thenostalgicmofo -3 points-2 points ago

I thought Obama's AMA was pretty bad.

[–]kcg5 23 points24 points ago

Im no expert but I think your title is a bit off..

[–]Xet 25 points26 points ago

I don't understand this at all. There's so much publicity about this thing, and then there's absolutely no footage of the test jump aside from a half second just as he's about to step off.

[–]BAEazy 20 points21 points ago

Well whos supposed to film him on the way down?

[–]Xet 15 points16 points ago

Take a look at the submission picture - there are multiple cameras on the balloon itself, one pointing straight down. I would assume that his suit would have a camera on it as well.

I have been unable to find any footage of the descent - not even a video of him falling from the perspective of the cameras on the balloon. Nada.

[–]DiggyB 12 points13 points ago

It's just a test jump. The real jump, in 40 hours or so, is probably going to have a lot more cameras rolling, including the monitors on his vital signs.

Video about the filming system: http://www.redbullstratos.com/gallery/?mediaId=media1881090407001

[–]Spaghe-t 2 points3 points ago

Iron Man?

[–]DiggyB 1 point2 points ago

I guess I was wrong. It's a camera watching his face from the capsule.

[–]JarasM 6 points7 points ago

How does a test jump differ from the actual jump? Does he go all the way up, step on the edge, lean... and run back inside, slowly descending again, all the while shouting "TEST TEST"?

[–]phonetic 5 points6 points ago

I also want to know this. Maybe he jumps from a lower altitude?

[–]godelski 3 points4 points ago

He jumped from 71,500 ft in one of the test jumps. His real jump is 120,000 ft or 23 miles. edit: The second jump is 96,000'. They only did two manned balloon tests and the third one will be the real jump.

[–]gullale 4 points5 points ago

I dare say they're all real jumps.

[–]godelski 0 points1 point ago

Very real, but that they are tests for the real jump... Damn.

[–]DiggyB 5 points6 points ago

Test jump was at 97,000 feet. The real jump is 120,000 feet, or 4.35 miles higher.

[–]JarasM 0 points1 point ago

97000 feet is still amazing, no reason not to record it and brag about it.

[–]youngavlol 2 points3 points ago

If they let me, I would. For science of course.

[–]kcg5 1 point2 points ago

Kittenger had a helmet cam before it was cool

[–]lurker_becomes_lurkd 0 points1 point ago

[–]Harabeck 6 points7 points ago

They want you to have to tune into the main event to see the footage.

[–]bvm 1 point2 points ago

yup, there won't actually be much difference between the test footage and the main event. Despite the much tougher task at hand, the footage would actually look quite similar.

[–]Xet 1 point2 points ago

That's what I don't really like terribly much about things like this that seem to be approached from a commercial point of view. If it was a public space organization doing this, they would just let you see the inner workings of the whole project, as well as the results and footage of tests. They'd have no reason to hide stuff from you in order to hype up the 'main event'.

[–]Harabeck 1 point2 points ago

Certainly, having it entirely in the public eye would be preferable. However, you have to ask if this would happen at all without the commercial interests. We live in a capitalist society, so commercial trappings are going to get on lots of things. I'm just glad some of that is making actual progress possible.

[–]mattunedge 0 points1 point ago

The real thing is supposed to be streamed or at least aired on AFN (Armed Forces Network).

[–]deja-vu-comment 40 points41 points ago

Space isn't remote at all. It's only an hour's drive away if your car could go straight up.

.

[–]kcg5 24 points25 points ago

not the kind of place to raise your kids

[–]squidbill 11 points12 points ago

In fact it's cold as hell.

[–]MEGAFUCKER 4 points5 points ago

You've really made the grade! Tell my wife I love her very much...

[–]Apex_Series 2 points3 points ago

SHE KNOWS!

[–]sheepinabowl -2 points-1 points ago

And we all know hell is frozen.

[–]frag971 -1 points0 points ago

I don't know, i think most kids would love to be raised up to space.

[–]kcg5 0 points1 point ago

There'd be no one there to raise them..

[–]pocket_eggs 0 points1 point ago

Then again it would take you about 10 years to walk to the moon and a thousand years to walk to Mars.

[–]garrettmikesmith 0 points1 point ago

I don't see your point. How is roughly 60 miles not enough to make something remote?

[–]robinator- 1 point2 points ago

But his point is right there! Don't you see it? It's right under the "S"!

[–]frozenvanillacoke 0 points1 point ago

Awesome, another QI fan!

[–]WompWomp420 10 points11 points ago

Repost, Terrible title, and a really dumb shopped photo in the 2nd pic. Why is this getting up voted!

[–]secretchimp 2 points3 points ago

That second photo is so fake I laughed out loud.

[–]jiruga 2 points3 points ago

you blood won't boil in space. you can actually survive a few seconds up to a half minute without a suit in space. our skin prevents the blood from boiling.

[–]ajtothe 4 points5 points ago

Lets post this one more time

[–]friendlypenguin 1 point2 points ago

Reported and request that this be removed. This is sensationalist crap and photoshopped garbage that doesn't belong in /r/space.

[–]zugunruh3 1 point2 points ago

How much control do you have over where you land when you get up that high?

[–]DankDarko 0 points1 point ago

well you still should be able to driving yourself on thw way down.

[–]reidzen 0 points1 point ago

One error, and he would forget to remove the lens cap on his camera!

Just trying to illustrate how stupid this is. Not every error is fatal.

[–]Reoh -2 points-1 points ago

Hey, I can see my house from here!

[–]AdamMcFly 1 point2 points ago

Its not until OCTOBER 9th. Check out Red Bulls youtube channel. support it and watch on Tuesday.

[–]Garrettishere 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure that second picture is fake. He's jumping from the upper atmosphere, not medium Earth orbit. While he will be able to see a very apparent curvature of the Earth, it won't be anything like in that picture. You can go look at space station pictures and the curvature isn't of that magnitude.

[–]DankDarko 0 points1 point ago

could easily be lens distortion. Fisheye something like that. It could also very well be shopped.

[–]Garrettishere 0 points1 point ago

Look at Felix. While it's hard to tell, he doesn't appear to be warped in any way.

[–]Slashmonkey 0 points1 point ago

Why is this such a big deal? It's been done before, almost 49 years ago. Personally, I would love to have the opportunity to do a jump like this.

[–]Ascott1989 1 point2 points ago

That second picture looks pretty legit.

[–]Kurt_Vonnecunt 0 points1 point ago

Well, it's actually shopped.

[–]tamat -2 points-1 points ago

not shopped, just using a distorted lens that make it look like he is orbiting close to the moon

[–]Kurt_Vonnecunt -1 points0 points ago

Ah, okay, well I was just repeating what I read. I actually have no idea what I'm talking about. Thanks for the clarification!

[–]RabidRaccoon -1 points0 points ago

He should change his name to something more American like Assfarmer.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057012/quotes?qt=qt0454475

[–]FlyingLiquor 1 point2 points ago

I see what you did there.

[–]ido 1 point2 points ago

Baum=tree gartner=gardener

Baumgartner is the guy that work in an arboretum.

[–]andrewtuckr 0 points1 point ago

Is he skydiving into Jupiter or something?

Edit: By that I mean his blood would not boil and brain wouldn't explode by vacuum exposure. Perhaps if he were skydiving into an atmosphere with extremely high temperature and pressure like that of Jupiter it would be possible, though he would most likely implode, not explode. But what do I know.

[–]DankDarko 0 points1 point ago

What about the changes in pressure on his blood not to mention part way down he has to remove the suit for some reason. perhaps to prevent overheating?

[–]JucheRevolution -4 points-3 points ago

Yea, you should join him

[–]andrewtuckr 2 points3 points ago

Obviously my comment was not understood, and therefore I should kill myself. Thanks!

[–]JucheRevolution -2 points-1 points ago

Anytime!

[–]shitterplug 0 points1 point ago

Nice sensationalist title, asshole.

[–]CubanMissileCrisis -3 points-2 points ago

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE!
