FYI, this is an example of hemimetabolism (incomplete metamorphosis). Cicadas undergo a series of nymph stages before finally shedding a last exuvia and emerging as an adult.

True (complete) metamorphosis (like in butterflies) is called holometabolism, where you see the classic egg-->larva-->pupa-->adult transformation.

[–]tvtropesguy 215 points216 points ago

so what you're saying is, that's not his final form.

[–]mrdoink20 279 points280 points ago

[–]azazelthegoat 59 points60 points ago

Ah the Cell saga... good times...

[–]Farisr9k 48 points49 points ago

I appreciated it's relative brevity.

Buu saga went for WAY too long.

[–]MayorEmanuel 24 points25 points ago

Depends on if you count the Cell Games as separate from the Cell Saga.

[–]Druuseph 24 points25 points ago

But the point is that at least by the time it got there the rules were pretty much understood. The Buu saga just kept making them up as it went along to the point where you were screaming at the TV 'COME THE FUCK ON' when the next Evil/Kid/Fat/Majin/What-ever-the-fuck Buu appeared and needlessly changed the rules for the 50th time.

[–]GoodBananaPancakes 12 points13 points ago

Well, Power levels are bullshit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsMSiVn6vpQ

[–]Doebino 6 points7 points ago

NEXT TIME ON DRAGON BALL Z:

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HYHAHHHHHHHHHHHH

[–]Farisr9k 0 points1 point ago

I came into the comments just to make sure someone posted this.

[–]kareemabduljabbq 9 points10 points ago

knowledge got dropped, son.

[–]EgoOdyssey 556 points557 points ago

This is one of the cooler posts

[–]scarecrow4_20 360 points361 points ago

I thought it was beautiful.

[–]kentd600 158 points159 points ago

I actually think it's face is kinda adorable. I like it's little black eyes.

[–]Journalisto 58 points59 points ago

I like it, but I'm a little thrown off by the paper towel. It seems like an odd place to metamorphosize.

[–]taosahpiah 34 points35 points ago

Cleans up the mess.

[–]Farisr9k 22 points23 points ago

Say what you will about Cicadas, they always clean up after themselves.

except for their shells

[–]REDDITvTIDDER 64 points65 points ago

If anyone thinks this is beautiful then they have not come to associate this bug with the noise it makes. In east Texas, the bug has a constant drone in the background that when focused on can drive a man to insanity. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep eeeeeeeeeeeeeeep eeeeeeeeeeeeeeep eeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Fuck cicadas.

[–]Kittycatter 19 points20 points ago

I fucking love the sounds of cicadas. Sometimes they are so loud it's almost deafening - but I still love those little fuckers. Reminds me of summertime as a kid!

[–]Grantly 18 points19 points ago

They make that horrifying scream, and then they fly at your face. And it fucking hurts when the bastards hit you.

[–]big_wang_theory 5 points6 points ago

When they'd come around, I would chase my brother all around the neighborhood with them. Puts a smile on my face because that was so damn fun.

[–]windowpuncher 2 points3 points ago

It's scary as fuck when you don't expect it, too. Minding your own business, then this screaming getting really close really fast, then they hit you in the face.

[–]mosstacean 16 points17 points ago

Maybe I'm crazy, but I've always liked the noise they make. I find it calming.

[–]starsweeper 24 points25 points ago

I was thinking the same thing. Although this makes that ungodly noise a little more understandable. Clearly cicadas come directly from the pit of Satan.

[–]dick_hole2 8 points9 points ago

zzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz- thats a cicada noise

[–]Uldric 7 points8 points ago

If you liked this one, you will probably like this one as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgCDcobtZHs Big relief when it finally comes out.

[–]ga4a89 3 points4 points ago

This is how I feel when I take off shoes that are too small and hurt my feel all day.

[–]daniyhungre 13 points14 points ago

You're beautiful

[–]scarecrow4_20 3 points4 points ago

Aww, you make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

[–]JonnyRadical 10 points11 points ago

His beautiful what?

[–]daniyhungre 12 points13 points ago

God dammit!

[–]starsweeper 3 points4 points ago

Wait that's not right? I thought "you're" was "you are."

[–]JonnyRadical 11 points12 points ago

It is correct. Now.

He edited it after I pointed it out. He originally had it as 'your beautiful'.

[–]PortlandoCalrissian 5 points6 points ago

For a second I thought my world had just been rocked.

[–]AllisterKane 28 points29 points ago

Here are some pics I took of one last summer.

I went outside to smoke, and my dog was sniffing at it, about 2 feet off the ground on the bricks. I stayed and kept the dog from eating it while it emerged.

When he was completely out, I moved him to the top of the recycle bin (the pink thing) to keep him out of reach of the husky. But he was wandering around and I was afraid he'd fall off before his wings were ready, so I brought him inside for a while. Once his wings looked ok, I released him on a bush in the front yard.

[–]qovneob 8 points9 points ago

Cicadas are great. When I was a kid I used to collect their exoskeletons from trees after they hatched.

[–]tha_dood 29 points30 points ago

But not /r/wtf worthy.

[–]SkullyKitt 4 points5 points ago

You know what is?

A freshly molted Cicada tastes like walnuts.

...So I hear. There are festivals during the dog-day cicada cycles where people catch huge netfuls and use them for everything from pizza toppings to milling for flour.

[–]EmptyAndFrantic 299 points300 points ago

Why "nope"? It's adorable! :3

[–]Kanye_Westicles 104 points105 points ago

Agreed. You can almost hear him scream, "I'VE GOT WINGS, BITCH!"

[–]iTumor 39 points40 points ago

I'VE GOT WINGS, BITCH! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

FTFY

[–]pikachusyellow 33 points34 points ago

I feel like thats what salamence does when it evolved.

[–]Syrina_Inavi 36 points37 points ago

Thought the same. Still wondering why op reposted this in WTF. There is no WTF in this pic.

Btw: Those wings are really beautiful <3

[–]oshiitake 19 points20 points ago

Cicadas are adorable! So glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. I used to collect their shedded "skins" when I was a kid. Though that may or may not be weird.

[–]LonelyCannibal 21 points22 points ago

I used to take the husks and discretely hook the forelegs on the shoulder of my friends' shirts.

Then, give it a minute and say in a horrified voice, "Oh my god... it's ON you!" Their instincts did the rest.

[–]PistonPitbull 4 points5 points ago

Well I may or may not have one on my desk right now that I found a couple weeks ago...

[–]cat_drugs 6 points7 points ago

Its like when you get back home from an excrutiating day at work, your clothes feel tight and sweaty, arriving home, peeling off those restrictive fucking layers, lying back in your boxers, doing that bruce willis thing with your feet on the carpet, away from fucking people/the sunlight/yammering voices... AAhhhhhhhh

[–]GodEmperor 6 points7 points ago

Because Reddit.

[–]njm1314 0 points1 point ago

God I wish I could do this. Would feel so good.

[–]REDDITvTIDDER 1 point2 points ago

If anyone thinks this is adorable, then they have not come to associate this bug with the noise it makes. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep eeeeeeeeeeeeeeep eeeeeeeeeeeeeep. It can drive you insane. Fuck cicadas.

[–]julielc 15 points16 points ago

I actually like that sound. It reminds me of fun summer nights and stress-free days.

[–]_toss_it_back_ 25 points26 points ago

I love that sound! It reminds me of humid summer nights outside with drinks and friends.

[–]duckdelicious 15 points16 points ago

I love it, too. It's so much a part of the South.

[–]Nagus_Maximus420 54 points55 points ago

These are harmless

[–]tidder_eht_nioj 47 points48 points ago

Except for that annoying high pitched sound they make.

[–]SHEEEIIIIIIITTTT 42 points43 points ago

I live near a shitload or cicadas. They are harmless (just pretty ugly looking). And I quite like that sound, it reminds me of summer.

[–]Journalisto 12 points13 points ago

I was handling one the other day, showing my 4-year-old its features and it took off like a helicopter. The fear in her eyes and the scream was priceless. Although, I'm lucky the cops weren't called it was so loud.

[–]ph00p 18 points19 points ago

Thats what we're calling it these days eh? "I was just showing her my Cicada Officer, honest!"

[–]Icovada 2 points3 points ago

Cicada sound = 110° summer, 1 pm under an olive tree

Yup, me too

[–]SirKeyboardCommando 9 points10 points ago

The woods around my house are full of cicadas and tree frogs. A few times a friend from the city has asked me what all the noise was and it took me a while to figure out wtf they were talking about. I don't even notice the sound they make anymore.

[–]SpaceOdysseus 6 points7 points ago

there's a rhythm to it that makes it beautiful.

[–]alphabot 94 points95 points ago

in zerg voice: Metamorphosis complete!

[–]cuedva 26 points27 points ago

SPAWN MORE OVERLORDS

[–]JavaLSU 10 points11 points ago

I don't know what a Zerg is or what it sounds like. So I read it in Zoidberg's voice.

[–]bradey10 19 points20 points ago

Cant read it in zerg's voice. Why not zoidberg!

[–]ledat 3 points4 points ago

Zerg, a StarCraft race.

[–]Mmammammamma 2 points3 points ago

More like: *splat*

[–]madge_laRue 80 points81 points ago

how can you 'nope' something with such cute lil' eyes? look at his little eyes! full of hopes and dreams, i tell ya.

[–]knifebucket 56 points57 points ago

because OP is a wuss.

[–]MiloMuggins 22 points23 points ago

98% of all insect related "nope"s stem from ignorance. Insects are some of the most fascinating animals on earth.

[–]knifebucket 1 point2 points ago

Insects are so science!

[–]czarchastic 12 points13 points ago

I can only imagine the WTF look on OP's face when he finds out what happens to caterpillars.

[–]ctl8 38 points39 points ago

This is one example of how amazing nature is.

[–]daniyhungre 9 points10 points ago

It's quite beautiful if you think about it

[–]SpacedAlien 37 points38 points ago

Not WTF at all.

I got the first one! Woooo look at that reddit cred.

[–]KindredBear 20 points21 points ago

Wild Shedinja Appeared!

[–]MrHue 6 points7 points ago

They're harmless. I saw one that had molted a few weeks ago just chilling in the sun at the edge of the road waiting for its wings to dry. Poked it with my foot and he just kind of wobbled around. They won't hurt you you can pick them up and they won't bite or anything unless they feel severely threatened.

[–]xenoph2 23 points24 points ago

It's a perfectly normal natural act, not sure what's WTF about it.

[–]Spaghe-t 6 points7 points ago

Had a white one that wasn't done "drying" fall off a tree on a visit to Japan, kids nearby told me to "put it out of it's misery" and killed it.

Most "wtf" moment of my life

[–]Xanthro 6 points7 points ago

Yeah that kinda makes me sad. Cicada nymphs spend years underground (IIRC)...that one finally came out only to be squished before it could even fly. :(

[–]SaloL 11 points12 points ago

Congratulations! Your Nincada evolved into Ninjask! (Hope you had a spare space in your inventory party)

Edit: I'm a little slow today

[–]sorryjzargo 6 points7 points ago

I think that if cicadas shed their skin enough, they'll turn into Metroids

[–]emoness88 6 points7 points ago

As an Oklahoman (they're everywhere in Oklahoma, btw)... I now fear for my life.

[–]jane6742 3 points4 points ago

It was a rare treat to find one when I was a kid. Totally cool. Used to collect the exoskeletons and put them on our clothes and skin. Yeah, pretty weird childhood.

[–]myevilpinky 11 points12 points ago

Congrats, Your Nincada evolved into Shedinja

[–]CrossEyedPanda 6 points7 points ago

It's cell !!

[–]beflatblues 4 points5 points ago

After playing Resident Evil 6 all week, this looks familiar.

[–]zinco96 4 points5 points ago

Nice, but not really a WTF/NOPENOPENOPENOPE thing.

[–]ChatGarou 2 points3 points ago

When I was a kid I loved catching cicadas that were about to molt and watching them.

I find it pretty amazing that they can survive at all. They are completely vulnerable and can hardly move at all when they're in the molting phase.

[–]Sprengstoff 0 points1 point ago

damn life you're fucked up.

[–]MouthR0t 2 points3 points ago

"Nope"? Don't be a fucking pussy, man. I remember these guys growing up - I used to collect their skins from the trees and I loved their mating calls. They're harmless (other than for crops) and adorable.

[–]godmoderage 0 points1 point ago

I have a picture of a baby cicada at the top of my desk. I LOVE these things, they're so cool. I went to missouri a few years ago and they were all over the place. My sister on the other hand hated these, haha.

[–]zxrax 0 points1 point ago

Looked like Cell from Dragon Ball Z

[–]BrawnyBarney 0 points1 point ago

What? Cicada is evolving!

[–]DifferentNoodles 2 points3 points ago

Hey, there was another bug inside that bug.

[–]jintax 0 points1 point ago

Cell from Dragonball Z ;D

[–]revfelix 0 points1 point ago

[–]crapallthetime 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of True Blood.

[–]talitus 2 points3 points ago

It's called nature. Fucking faggot.

[–]girlinthecity 1 point2 points ago

Nature is amazing.

[–]gman407 1 point2 points ago

just like those enemies in resident evil 6

[–]Virus64 3 points4 points ago

Some of us haven't played it yet. From Canada so, sorry.

[–]ChaGz 0 points1 point ago

This is the beautiful creepiest thing I've ever seen.

[–]diditforthelols 0 points1 point ago

That was awesome!

[–]Vodiodoh 0 points1 point ago

Jon Cicada

[–]KarmaKel -1 points0 points ago

It reminds me of resident evil 6.

[–]Riktov -1 points0 points ago

The animation is greatly speeded up; it actually takes about an hour to emerge. The move where it pulls itself up from hanging upside down just takes about a second. I've seen this live and it really is amazing.

[–]DocEmmettBrown88 1 point2 points ago

Not nearly as nope as I imagined it would be. Actually pretty amazing.

[–]abandfromlaredo 0 points1 point ago

awww, i used to love playing with these lil guys whenever they were around. i would also collect the exoskeletons for some reason.

[–]hammerbeard 1 point2 points ago

at last, I am free to go piss everyone off

[–]njtwkr 0 points1 point ago

Nope why? It's beautiful.

[–]cdubbs44 0 points1 point ago

play the song across the universe by the beatles while watching this. The part where Lennon says "nothings gonna change my world" was playing when I saw this. Perfect timing

[–]ooakey -1 points0 points ago

This made me want to re-watch Nausicca.

[–]iwrestledabeartwiceq -1 points0 points ago

I find their shells(?) all around my yard... it's actually pretty scary

[–]BDaught 1 point2 points ago

C'mon. I used to get the leftover shells when I was little and hang them from my clothes.

[–]DL34 -1 points0 points ago

Ho, we have a shit tone of these in south of France, they really make a lot of noise. They're really lovable though, and completely harmless. They're hard to spot but you sometimes see their old skins on branches and such.

[–]trust_me_im_a_cat -1 points0 points ago

These little fuckers live all over the trees by my house. They are nasty as hell, and it's disgusting watching my dog crunch on an empty cicada shell.

[–]Montmorency222 0 points1 point ago

Where I grew up there was a certain tree, a Crimson King of King Crimson or something. Big red tree. These guys used to be COVERING the tree. After they all shed their shells and dried out, the moved on. You could knock hundreds of these shells off the tree. There little leg barbs still worked so the shells would stick to you.

[–]Whitworth 1 point2 points ago

My brother and I used to watch this happened every summer in Ohio. Not a nope, it's a yup.

[–]mms09 0 points1 point ago

Cicadas are fantastic!!

[–]Candilynn 1 point2 points ago

Apparently if you eat these things right after they come out of the shell they are rather good. I've heard they have a potatoey type texture and taste.

[–]garlicscapes 0 points1 point ago

Their eyes have Exoskeleton parts too?!

[–]SpookyGent 1 point2 points ago

Beautiful wings. What a lovely creature.

[–]dan_457 -1 points0 points ago

Every time I see things like this, I can't help but think of Cell(from dbz).

[–]TonyBonanza 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone else think that was gorgeous to watch?? Nature is da best.

[–]Otaku-jin 0 points1 point ago

At least it actually happens slower than that. Cicadas are super cool, though.

[–]kccogirl -1 points0 points ago

That's incredible, but disturbing at the same time.

[–]jorblex -1 points0 points ago

cicada evolved into wingcada

[–]Topsiders 1 point2 points ago

LOL NATURE NOPE NOPE NOPE!

[–]jrb 0 points1 point ago

jetdaisuke made a video of lots and lots of time lapse cicada's doing this fascinating thing... to dubstep (mute, if you don't like)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBdiv3wRItc

[–]pringle_king[!] 1 point2 points ago

This was a really cool GIF with an absolutely idiotic title.

[–]fonzalonz -1 points0 points ago

You should have pressed B to stop it from evolving.

[–]d2cole -1 points0 points ago

Damn, that must itch something fierce, but imagine the relief!

[–]anxhelino1234 -1 points0 points ago

I like its wings, they're nice.

[–]jam235 -1 points0 points ago

You should have pressed B.

[–]Munsta750 -1 points0 points ago

Damn, nature!

[–]bigbeaudelindeau -1 points0 points ago

Nothing wrong with this. Think of how good that must feel.

[–]FUFOFF -1 points0 points ago

All nopes aside, this is actually really fucking cool.

[–]fransanciscan 1 point2 points ago

I love cicadas! That sir, is not a nope.

[–]catsreaction -1 points0 points ago

I remember as a kid I would take the exoskeleton off a tree and put them on someones back then yell "Omg there's a huge bug on you"

[–]witzowitz 0 points1 point ago

Goddamn, I bet that feels so good.

[–]lifetime_at_bernies -1 points0 points ago

Please use more paper towels...

[–]Skyblueflora -1 points0 points ago

CAN'T. STOP. WATCHING IT.

[–]preo -1 points0 points ago

i was thinking 'YAYYYY" the whole time

[–]rycrimes 0 points1 point ago

"Cicada metamorphosis" would've been completely fine as a title. The "nope" is very unneeded and unoriginal.

[–]TheHumanFisto 1 point2 points ago

THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM!

[–]atrilumen 0 points1 point ago

I'd eat it.

[–]bitterbeings 1 point2 points ago

what happens to the eyes on the shell during metamorphosis? is the insect perceiving through the new pair inside the shell (and if so at what point does that start) or does it see through the old pair?

how the hell does it transition something like that?

[–]AverageBum 0 points1 point ago

But that noise... dear God, that noise!

[–]CrimsonLoyalty 0 points1 point ago

I love these things. They can't hurt you, they're beautiful to look at.

I also happen to find their song soothing.

I have no regrets.

[–]Dxkingxd 0 points1 point ago

The quilted quicker picker upper..

[–]GrundleOuch 0 points1 point ago

cicadas are awesome. they also taste amazing when fried.

[–]JBSpartan -1 points0 points ago

what the hell did i just watch..

[–]eddygoombah 0 points1 point ago

Nope? I thought that was beautiful

[–]MangoStarr 0 points1 point ago

COOL

[–]tyranapuss -1 points0 points ago

I was eating... didn't really read the title... Fuck no.

[–]julieb5 0 points1 point ago

Gorgeous!

[–]nellapoo 0 points1 point ago

I loved collecting the little shells when I was kid living in Phoenix.

[–]CallMeAnEngineer 1 point2 points ago

If you 'nope' to that, I know 8 year old girls with bigger balls than you.

[–]sean488 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand what's so NOPE about this.

[–]DocileNinja 0 points1 point ago

My .gif glitched up and it just looked like a cicada humping a paper towel roll.

[–]RedSeven4 -1 points0 points ago

Trapinch evolved into Vibrava!

[–]BurnEmUp 1 point2 points ago

This isn't for r/WTF.

[–]MisterDings 0 points1 point ago

I ASCEND!!

[–]Elephant_Pizza 0 points1 point ago

thats more cute than nope.

[–]Melbouy889 0 points1 point ago

And cue incessant buzzing!

[–]tyrone17 0 points1 point ago

Stop posting bugs in WTF, fucking idiots. And say "nope" one more time and I'll shove a rusty screwdriver through your ass.

[–]herpty_derpty 0 points1 point ago

Kafka Representin'!

[–]Catheter 0 points1 point ago

I loooove cicadas.

[–]eagerbeaver1414 0 points1 point ago

I don't think this is either "Nope" nor "WTF". It's pretty cool.

I'm surprised it has new eyes.

[–]deemeetree 0 points1 point ago

Repost metamorphosis

[–]Organs 0 points1 point ago

I wish that was how I became an adult. Not all people; just me.

[–]RougeTrader 0 points1 point ago

Aww...Dats adorable :3

[–]NewEnglandSki16 0 points1 point ago

viewed this while Bring it Down by Emalkay was playing. Intense as fuck. And yes fuck is intense

[–]Dottiifer 0 points1 point ago

I used to look for their dried up skins when I was a kid and collect them or feed them to my dogs

[–]nickwashere 0 points1 point ago

Of course Redditors are frightened by anything that could be found outside of a house.

[–]BilboBaguette 1 point2 points ago

I used to have this recurring dream when I was a kid that humans molted their skin every night while they slept and you had to escape from your husk every morning. I would put my skins on hangers and keep them in the closet. They were my me suits.

[–]CrippledHorse 0 points1 point ago

Is this how babies are born?

[–]JugTvoj 1 point2 points ago

To put it mildly, I dislike insects in general. But these, these are kind of cool and harmless. Just hanging out in the trees, making some noise...Not trying to get in your pillow and then hang out around your mouth, nose, and eye lids as you sleep.

[–]cive666 0 points1 point ago

Is this that bug that makes that loud high pitch sound in the hot summer months?

[–]juma606 0 points1 point ago

He thinks paper towels are trees.

[–]Demolin 0 points1 point ago

Im sure you remember the cicadas that came out a few years back (these were the ones that were literally everywhere) They only come out once a decade or something.

I was a kid then, am i the only one who ate these things live for money??

[–]Lumepall 0 points1 point ago

The wings! They're beautiful!

[–]shartmobile 2 points3 points ago

Nope? This is a resounding Yup!

[–]JurassicParkerr 0 points1 point ago

How did it taste?

[–]djetaine 1 point2 points ago

nope? This is amazing. Nature is cool, yo.

[–]killerwin 0 points1 point ago

Fun Fact: Cicadas make noise with the southern voice. Just thought you guys should know...

[–]GoneFar 0 points1 point ago

Did anyone else imagine it hissing "I... am... ALIVE!!!" and possibly a monomaniacal laugh in there?

[–]irkp 0 points1 point ago

Not sure if to downvote because am disgusted; or to upvote because am disgusted

I lived in Okinawa Japan for 4 years. These things were everywhere and when they shed like that the shell goes hard. You can pluck the shells off of whatever there on and they stick to your clothes like velcro.

Miss those days in Japan.

Come to St. Louis when it's time for the 18 year cicadas to come out of the ground. They come out, fuck like no other, have a bunch of fucking babies and die and leave all their shells everywhere and it's like a sea of cicada shells.

My mother in law had a cicada shell just hanging out on her patio table. I had never seen one before. My brunch went flying.
