The birds are red-billed queleas, which weigh about 20 grams each. A male African elephant weighs 4,700–6,048 kgs, so it'd take somewhere between 235,000 and 300,000 birds to equal the mass of the elephant.

Red-billed queleas fly in flocks that can take 5 hours to fly past, so I'd say the birds are probably more massive, depending on how big this flock is.

The insects in this image have the most mass.

The birds evolved to weight as little as possible, otherwise they could not fly without wasting a lot of energy. They store very little fat and their bones are as hollow as possible.

Elephants evolved to be massive enough to crush trees and the leafes.
