That right there is being a good catcher.

Seriously, I would have turned around and yelled at that ump. Posey's just really focused on the game.

I think he was making a buttsex joke.

[–]douchymcface[S] 26 points27 points ago

I was gonna make a gay joke, butt fuck it.

Y'all need Jesus.

Well I'm retarded.

I wonder what Buster is thinking right now, it's gotta cross his mind at least once like "what the fuck is this guy doing?"

Don't think we forgot what you did to the Twins in 2009, Cuzzi. You clearly just like screwing catchers any way you can

My god that's a shitty call.

[–]Lab_Daddy 2 points3 points ago

The extra umpire down the line was in perfect position too

Still makes my blood boil. Combined with the infield fly call the other night, what the fuck purpose are those extra umps serving down the line

Came here to say this.

Umps love to get all up on Posey, I swear they can't keep their hands off of him. Poor guy.

As a former catcher, I despised this.

[–]kintaeb 11 points12 points ago

Is this mostly so the ump can get the best read on the pitch? It seems like they shouldn't be allowed to actually touch the players to do that.

[–]Chicago CubsMagikrat 7 points8 points ago

I agree. I would feel restricted in my movement if I was catching. I hated when an Ump balanced himself with a hand on my back when I used to catch. Maybe this is just a weird case though. He could just simply have been off balance.

When they would do something like that, I would either slightly jump to reposition myself to so that I would always bump them hard enough that they would think twice about doing it again, or adjust in a way that let them know it made me uncomfortable.

For some reason the umpires that would do that (in my area) either don't listen, or don't take too kindly to talking to them at all.

Yeah, it's a combination of that and laziness (when it comes to high school and college umpires.) I've had quite a few that used me as a stabilizer whether it was a hand on the shoulder or the middle of the back. It was distracting but, most times, I would discretely mention it and they wouldn't do it any more.

Most umpires I've had would stand over my inside shoulder (right shoulder for a left handed batter, left shoulder for a righty.) It looks like Cuzzi is looking directly over Posey's head, which seems weird. He's definitely closer to Posey than any umpire I ever had.

[–]kratliff89 0 points1 point ago

It's not so much for stabilization or laziness as it is for spacing and distance. I'm not talking about in the picture we see but in your experiences. I know guys who do it (I do not. I have hands-free methods.) but they aren't doing it to stay upright. Just to be in the right spot

[–]sbhoolai 0 points1 point ago

The ump puts his hand on the catcher's back so he can quickly feel whether he will be moving to his left or right, on a passed ball, and get out of his way.

[–]manskies 6 points7 points ago

Cuzzi is trying to get cozy.

[–]Major League Baseballduxup 2 points3 points ago

Don't judge them!
