Has happened more recently. 2008

edit: information about the stats in the video-

  • the helicopters seen at 1:00 are not part of the border patrol, they are naval helicopters training touch and go's at Naval Outlying Landing Field, Imperial Beach.

  • the statistics about border crossing deaths are not from area, they are from the entire border region. actually no deaths have ever really happened at this location since the fence was put in place. border crossers used to drown all the time when trying to cross the mouth of the tijuana river (which is in Imperial Beach) before the fence was in place.

[–]iam0594 40 points41 points ago

Cool video. That last scene raised a question though. Are vendors on the Mexican side allowed to sell to American's through the fence? If they're not allowed to do, does it occasionally occur anyways?

[–]anti-establishmENT 15 points16 points ago

i actually live in imperial beach, and visit border field state park quite frequently. the beach in las playas, tijuana is not usually as busy as in this video and if you look at border field state park on google maps you can see that the tijuana estuary separates imperial beach from the international border by about one mile. so the beach on the US side is usually pretty desolate, except for a few horseback riders and people looking for sand dollars. when i go down there it is usually only kids on the other side of the fence, and they attempt to sell me "chicle" through the fence. at low tide it is possible to walk around the fence and cross the border, but a border patrol vehicle is always posted on the hill above the fence watching what goes on. they know kids sell candy and let it happen, but if any large or suspicious items go through the fence the border patrol will investigate.

[–]rima044 19 points20 points ago

I used to live in Mexico and to say the very least, I was one of the kids that sold chicle. My family went through a few rough times and I only had to do it once. As in one day, sold 1 boxe. I don't remember how much I made...but I remember all the mean comments people would make. I stayed outside a store for a while and then moved to a bus where I sold the most. A kid that entered behind me started singing and I think he didn't make much. Sad times. But...we came to the U.S. (legaly) and we are prety well off.

[–]anti-establishmENT 8 points9 points ago

im glad that the situation has worked out for you and your family. growing up in a city that is directly impacted by immigration struggles, i am able to realize the hardships of the issue. i wish you and your family the best.

Howdy neighbor.

[–]anti-establishmENT 3 points4 points ago

south bay! IB!

[–]originalname2 0 points1 point ago

You're the chicklet!

[–]coastalbrad 1 point2 points ago

No, it's very illegal.

I had a friend who lived 100m from the La Playas fence and I forgot my power cable at his place. The border wait was 6 hours, I thought of doing this. I had to wait until him came to the US a few days later.

You can go some feet into territory and guards won't care, but if you pass something, you're definitely going to have a bad day.

You should check out Pt. Roberts, there is no border, and resident have horsehoe pits right on the 49th parallel. There is an unfriendly sign to Canadians though, going into American territory gets you arrested. In practice residents won't get done for going a few feet in, but it would be the same rules and enforcement as in mexico.

[–]Jabba_the_Mutt 22 points23 points ago

That fence doesn't look very secure.

[–]thomasjs 19 points20 points ago

That is because border fences don't work. According to the GAO 40-45% of illegal immigrants came to the US under legal visas and just never left and anyone that just marched through a desert isn't going to be stopped by a fence.

[–]bierme 1 point2 points ago

Would you have a reference link for this? I tried GAO.gov but its unmanageable. Thanks.

[–]thomasjs 1 point2 points ago

My source is found here and you can download the full report (pdf format) by going to this link and scrolling down to May of 2011.

Both links are on the website for the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Govermental Affairs.

[–]bierme 0 points1 point ago

Thank you.

[–]anti-establishmENT 4 points5 points ago

it is possible to walk around the fence at low tide, but there is a 24/7 presence of border patrol posted on a hill about 100 yards from the fence. it is basically impossible to get through right there. there are hundreds of tunnels a little further east that are way easier to get through.

[–]W3dn3sday 11 points12 points ago

i love how the top comment on this video is it seems like a good way to get a kilo of coke over the border.

[–]Anonazon2 0 points1 point ago

A misleading karmawhoring title, on my reddit?

[–]apuckeredanus 0 points1 point ago

"All the military surplus since the Vietnam war has gone to the US-Mexico border." Either I misunderstood what that guy was saying or he's an idiot, cool video though.

[–]anti-establishmENT 0 points1 point ago

he said all of the surplus landed on the US/Mexico border. I know it isnt accurate. it is probably due to us surfing in sewage waste. thanks Brian Bilbray.

[–]bierme 0 points1 point ago

GOoool, no espera. Match point!

[–]deja-vu-comment 451 points452 points ago

Match point! You win amigos. We switch sides now, OK?

best bot ever

[–]pseudolobster[!] 18 points19 points ago

If only /u/Trapped_In_Reddit fared so well.

[–]Smelly_dildo 7 points8 points ago

Trapped_in_Reddit only differed because the programmer who made TIR didn't say "I'm a bot" in the message box.

[–]pseudolobster[!] 9 points10 points ago

Also Trapped_in_reddit only reposted like five top comments, compared to the other ten thousand original comments he made.

[–]Jawthumb 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, I was surprised how pissed everybody got. I just disliked him because he was a "comment constantly" karma whore.

[–]pseudolobster[!] 7 points8 points ago

I'm not really surprised. Reddit is like that. The more popular you are, the more likely you're going to have some drama surrounding you, and as soon as reddit picks up its pitchforks, it takes years before the witch hunt ends.

[–]Rikkushin 1 point2 points ago

TIR was a bot?

[–]Azahk101 0 points1 point ago

I only up voted because I like the ingenuity

[–]jellymelly 0 points1 point ago

haha it's like a robotic karmanaut!

[–]HeavenSk8 11 points12 points ago

Right in the feels.

[–]IAMA_Ghost_Boo 6 points7 points ago

Hey TiR is back!

[–]EngineerDave 52 points53 points ago

... Until the ball hits the razor wire.

[–]Scrawny53 22 points23 points ago

Or your hand gets caught in it

[–]IndieGamerRid 42 points43 points ago

"SPIKE! OW, fuck, spikes!"

[–]Ctofaname 2 points3 points ago

doesn't look like thats razor wire.. just regular barbwire.

[–]simshady 26 points27 points ago

The guy on the bottom right is so grabbing that chicks ass

[–]mcnublets 13 points14 points ago

hey I'll just... "hold you up"

[–]mumbly__joe 50 points51 points ago

Gotta wonder how many cocaine balls were served into the states. Match point, Mexico.

[–]mvanoort 59 points60 points ago

8 balls.

[–]Melibellule 5 points6 points ago

"I spiked the ball so hard it reached Arizona!"

[–]sirunclecid 10 points11 points ago

Which one is the home team?

[–]C_IsForCookie 4 points5 points ago

Both of them.

[–]sirunclecid 1 point2 points ago

Well that just turned a joke right around!

[–]jonahlew 17 points18 points ago

Juan serving two!

[–]tomoom165 16 points17 points ago

That's really cool. Like, humans are incredible.

[–]down_on_baker_stree 16 points17 points ago

True that. It's like the Christmas Truce but with more mustaches.

[–]so_many_squids 2 points3 points ago

Don't underestimate prewar British mustaches.

[–]wtfusernametaken 12 points13 points ago

Funniest part is, not only do the people on the U.S. side have a better standard of living, they get an advantage in the volleyball games due to the angled barbed wire.

[–]numbernin6 2 points3 points ago

MEEEEXXXXICCCCCOOOO

[–]I_am_Mexico 10 points11 points ago

WHAT?!

[–]bjo3030 0 points1 point ago

Carry on.

[–]Dammit81 2 points3 points ago

The American's are motherfucking cheaters! Look at all that extra blocking protection!

[–]Afa1234 2 points3 points ago

And a plane flies over with passengers smoking cigarettes, drinking water they brought from home, and conversing on how the security line was so quick and easy.

[–]InvasiveAlgorithm 0 points1 point ago

Borders are stupid.

[–]thegreatRMH 3 points4 points ago

When I saw the title of this post, I automatically assumed it was gonna be something from the 90s.

[–]Sonums 0 points1 point ago

Volleyball*

[–]Haikus3n531 -1 points0 points ago

As an Arizonan, i am unhappy to say that hate is a horrible thing. I AM happy to say that our governor is a skanky skeletor-looking cunt for the GOTP ( Grand old Tea Party). Total bulshit nowadays. Please feel free to skullfuck Jan Brewer. Anybody. Who does not care about any diseases they may contract. Bang her face into oblivion.

[–]Fr0s7y 2 points3 points ago

I left Arizona several years ago, but damn I still love that state. Knowing the political climate hasn't improved much depresses the hell out of me, though.

[–]FuckUYankeeBlueJeans 1 point2 points ago

Classy.

[–]wakeandbakon 1 point2 points ago

This is fucking GENIUS

[–]gchance92 0 points1 point ago

Winner takes freedom.

[–]Shit_Pickles 0 points1 point ago

I imagine not that many people spiked the ball

[–]manuel_robot_cleaner 0 points1 point ago

wait, couldn't you use that to throw drugs over?

[–]hippie945 0 points1 point ago

and then cartels and meth changed it all.

[–]NotTheDude 0 points1 point ago

The value-added tax, also called "drug laws", are to blame.

[–]Smugjester 0 points1 point ago

Now adays those volleyballs would be filled with drugs

[–]sleeper141 -1 points0 points ago

Pre-Reagan.

[–]imnotsir -1 points0 points ago

this is how serious national barriers should be.

[–]rajma45 0 points1 point ago

My parents told me about going hiking back in the '70s, hopping across a couple muddy creeks, and then when they finally found a town to get a beer they were told they were in Mexico. They had no idea.

[–]Dtmrm2 0 points1 point ago

The penalty for hitting the net is much more severe on the Mexican side....

[–]FlockofSeagulls 1 point2 points ago

Did the volley ball come back filled with drugs?

[–]Sr_DingDong 0 points1 point ago

I have always wondered something, might as well ask here:

The wall obviously doesn't stretch the breadth of the USA so instead of crossing at the wall why not just... go where there's no fence and no people? I can't imagine the US has people covering the entire thing.

[–]bjo3030 0 points1 point ago

Because desert.

[–]walkofdoom 1 point2 points ago

Those poor voles! ;) ;p

[–]screwbacca 0 points1 point ago

It's all fun and games until someone goes for a spike and gets a handful of barbed wire.

[–]spike312 0 points1 point ago

Plot twist: they're all Mexicans.

[–]djtechnofreak 0 points1 point ago

and not a single net violation was called that day. nor was a shit given.

[–]IchorLQ 0 points1 point ago

32 years later, anybody playing around that border is either shot by the drug cartels or kindly asked to turn back by the border patrol.

[–]ZgonzRawr 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure if this is a joke or not

[–]PullOutBoy -2 points-1 points ago

The loser lost their freedom ;)

[–]MasterAardwolf 1 point2 points ago

So Mexico won?

[–]Anaphylatic 4 points5 points ago

Insert [Americans have lost their freedom] here.

[–]So_Alpha 4 points5 points ago

DAE think we are literally living in a police state?

[–]MasterAardwolf 1 point2 points ago

Not entirely. If we are experiencing less freedom, it's because we took it away ourselves. Democracy at work.

[–]so_many_squids 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, won the right to live in a state of civil war.

[–]wheelbarrow 0 points1 point ago

There were a lot of spikes that game.

[–]Knubinator -2 points-1 points ago

Jenni front paged! And with a repost, too. ;)

[–]marathon -2 points-1 points ago

no NAFTA to create an economic disaster in Mexico, forcing people to see work in the US

[–]DMC_Hotness -3 points-2 points ago

Making its tenth appearance in the last 3 mos... Give it up for the US/Mexico border volleyball net pic. Another one will be working its way up new shortly.

[–]givemesomespamplease -1 points0 points ago

As someone in Southeast Michigan I find Mexican immigration problems cute. Mexicans are awesome, but try stepping going to a store without seeing dozens of unapproachable/speakable Arabic women in burkas and head scarfs, or going to a gas station or liquor store without a rude Chaldean behind the counter. Mexicans might as well start flocking to Detroit because within ten years the racism is going to shift to Arabs full force and they're going to be forgetting why they were racist against you in the first place.

[–]zeroes0 0 points1 point ago

Racism is probably going to shift towards China/India as their billion man economy starts to modernize. Although we'll always have a special (racist) place in our hearts for Muslims in the U.S.

Mississippi on the other hand will still hate the blacks and gays, because...well...Mississippi.

[–]air_attack10 -1 points0 points ago

hard to play the net with that barbed wire!!!

[–]inferno10 0 points1 point ago

Now just place the drugs into the volleyball...

[–]cocainfancy 0 points1 point ago

Twist: The Volleyball was filled with Cocaine.

[–]imfuckingawesome 0 points1 point ago

...thety still do that.

Link!

[–]Darkersun 1 point2 points ago

Well at some point the US became a REALLY attractive place to work, so the walls got bigger...but now a days with our unemployment its barely worth sneaking here to get what work is left.

[–]dirtymurty18 -3 points-2 points ago

Before the 'war on drugs'?

[–]Povidius -4 points-3 points ago

One day we will have no borders.

Welcome, one world government, one world religion, one world currency, one world culture, one world ruler. Just one world... although it will be the end of the world cause Jesus is coming back.

[–]HovarTM 0 points1 point ago

Jesus is there in the picture. How can you not see him.

[–]Povidius 0 points1 point ago

sorry, didn't recognize him with the hat on.
