If that asteroid is really only as big as the paper, it's probably only 12 feet across. It's smoldering, but not melting. It is probably made of iron. That puts the temperature at about 1000 Fahrenheit. I'm not going to bother calculating the speed required for the friction with air to reach that temperature, so let's just say it's travelling at 2000 MPH. Something with the mass of a iron rock that size, travelling at that speed would generate an explosion and debris cloud roughly the size of the Korean Peninsula upon impact. Those people are wasting their time.

Not exactly.

The average velocity of meteors entering the atmosphere is about 10-70 kilometers per second, which is about 20000-150000 MPH. An asteroid entering the atmosphere at only 2000 MPH would be highly unusual.

Using the Impact Earth simulator for an asteroid traveling at 11 Km/s, made of solid iron, 12 feet in diameter, and impacting at an angle of 90 degrees gives the following data:

Total energy - 1.24 * 1013 joules. This is equivalent to about 3 kilotons of TNT. The Hiroshima bomb had a yield of 16 kilotons (about 5 times as much as this asteroid would have), and while it did a lot of damage to Hiroshima, it was limited to a single city and the surrounding area - nowhere near the size of Korea.

The asteroid would also break apart in the atmosphere before reaching the ground. The fragments of the asteroid might still leave a few smaller craters, but none of them would be larger than a few feet in diameter probably. The people holding up the paper would probably be fine.

I was looking at it from it's current location. If the perspective isn't tricking me, it's only about 250 feet above the ground. It clearly would have been far bigger on entry,and faster, and I considered the debris in the atmosphere as part of the debris cloud. I will admit I may have overcorrected for atmospheric drag. My math was very rough and I probably screwed up at some point. I'll try and figure out the size of the rock that broke off from and use the impact calculator you used to see how far off I was correcting from your misunderstandings of how I arrived at my original numbers, assuming it is the largest fragment of a 50 m asteroid.

New estimates: 26 megaton equivalent explosion.

This simulator doesn't seem to like estimating anything besides the very local effects. I'm going to do the lazy thing and not bother estimating the debris cloud, as I was wrong the first time.
