        No, it is not! In the right lower corner you can see Maxin machine gun model 1910 on the Sokolov's mount. It wasn't used by Japanese.

              • Your linked source is only stating, that residents needed to carry these mask in 2006, 18 months after the residents returned to the island after it was evacuated in 2000. Accourding to your linked article, the sulfur emissions stared with the eruption in 2000.

              Whatever the backstory of this picture is, it has nothing to do with the Japanese island.

              I just found on some website that Miyakejima is a Japanese island with very high volcanic activity. Residents were forced to leave and in 2005 were allowed to return, but some land was rendered uninhabitable because of the toxic stuff in the land. Some residents like these people in the picture returned to that land and wore gas masks for whatever reason I do not know.
