The giraffe by itself seems to have resembled a combination of camel and leopard to at least to ancient cultures. In Latin is known as a "camelopardalis" (there's also a constellation with this name) which translates to "camel-leopard." In Persian it is sometimes known as an "oshtorgavpalang" which translates to "camel-cow-leopard". Of course, the more common word is "zherafeh," the direct source of the English word "giraffe."
