I bought these plastic spike pads that claimed they would keep cats out of my garden (sandy soil = way too much cat poop). I put the out only to find the cats enjoyed rubbing against them so they actually increased cat traffic to my yard. I would be sitting outside and a cat would walk up, sit down beside the spike pad, and then start running his/her paws over the spikes to get a little massage.

You should have laid mines.

[–]Lord_Monboddo 25 points26 points ago

Worked for me! Although now I have cat all over my backyard.

[–]Azelphur 2 points3 points ago

If you still have issues with cats pooping in the garden, get a water scarecrow. They work well.

[–]danieldeboulay 2 points3 points ago

Move them away from the garden so they go somewhere else?

[–]sarlac 1 point2 points ago

We had roses with massive thorns. Naturally one of our cats loved to headbutt and rub her face along them.

[–]TeHSaNdMaNS 49 points50 points ago

Thank you for not typing stop as "stahp."

[–]Peytron 18 points19 points ago

Dolan got old pretty much immediately.

[–]TeHSaNdMaNS 10 points11 points ago

I don't even mind the occasional dolan or "stahp" image. It's when it used in random conversations as normal slang. I'm aware I'm not the arbiter of what slang people can use but I can sure as well praise people who don't over do it.

[–]zublits 11 points12 points ago

gooby pls

[–]LiterallyKesha 14 points15 points ago

Well, Reddit got a hold of it...

[–]Peytron 2 points3 points ago

The subreddit really didn't help at all.

[–]shanoxilt 1 point2 points ago

[–]StrangeArrangement 0 points1 point ago

What, what was that? Has it really been 4 hours?

[–]epicflyman 0 points1 point ago

I honestly don't mind "stahp", so long as its used in the correct context. All other dolan memes are just bloody annoying.

Damn. Tell us how you really feel.

[–]structureofmind 1 point2 points ago

I was worried that maybe it was a fake hedgehog, but it looks real in the video!

[–]Doddzi 0 points1 point ago

But you didn't edit...

[–]signing_to_say_this 2 points3 points ago

Yes, there is no asterisk but I did edit my comment. That happens when you don't reload page before editing. At least it works for me (Fx 15.0.1).

[–]signing_to_say_this 5 points6 points ago

Thank you, officer.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil -3 points-2 points ago

/r/videos does.

[–]silver_pear 66 points67 points ago

I feel like that is just a more subtle version of one of these.

I could be wrong, just get the feeling a hedgehog would run away/hurt the cat

[–]justsomeotherperson 44 points45 points ago

In the video, you can see the hedgehog move its head several times. It seems like he's kind of playing dead, though.

[–]am_animator 18 points19 points ago

the nose folds up too, if he's scared. i just see him being a little disinterested either way, he wasn't running, jump/heaving or balling. he's a very well taken care of hedgehog to not be doing that around any other kind of animal. they've either known each other for forever or that owner is very good with her pets

[–]playinodds 7 points8 points ago

the cat abuses him this way all the time. mostly he just sighs and thinks about baseball.

[–]Numlocks 3 points4 points ago

That sounds terrible. Why wouldn't he just go to a happy non-boring place in his head?

[–]DutchMeNow 12 points13 points ago

We've had a lot of very large hedgehogs near my mother's house, apparently because it's a good slug season. Unfortunately, the dogs love them. We immediately pull them back when we can, but the dogs tend to see the hedgehogs before we do and will try to bite at their quills, to pick them up. (They've never hurt one fortunately, we always pull them away immediately)

The hedgehogs, when we come near without the dogs, just sit still and look at us. They don't seem to walk away or do much of anything. They never seem to be scared. Sometimes they just continue walking if that's what they were doing.

If the dogs are around, or if other dogs have just walked by before we arrived (lot of dog people on our street), the hedgehogs will just sit there in a ball. That's their defense mechanism. They don't run away or attack or anything like that, they just curl up and play dead. They'll stay that way for like five minutes after the dogs are gone.

[–]brajx 5 points6 points ago

Well, they have the spikes because they don't run away from predators.

I reckon my comment might be interpreted as rude, please read it in a friendly tone.

[–]TheNitwon 44 points45 points ago

Poor hedgie. They never have their quills up like that unless they're scared.

[–]am_animator 69 points70 points ago

they legitimately ball at the drop of a hat, they think they're being tough. like the crabs from finding nemo that acted tough by saying "HEYYYYY. hheeeeyyyy--"

its not so much scared as just 'do not want/not sure if...' our hedgehog lived for like 7 years, he was a great temperament but he always had to snort first and take in surroundings later when meeting people or interacting with the other animals.

the fact that he's not flinching or 'thrusting' his body towards the kitty means he's totally not on the defensive, just bein a hedgehog :D

[–]1eejit 19 points20 points ago

Or grumpy after being woken up... probably scared in this case though.

[–]tittyfister69 7 points8 points ago

God damn that adorable.

[–]moetzen 3 points4 points ago

Think this is a reel hedgehog, they aren't as sharp as they may look like, you can easily touch them. I carried a lot of em off the roads around here

[–]crashv10 2 points3 points ago

i know, they actualy feel kinda cool

[–]Naldort 3 points4 points ago

Yea, it's more a defense against being eaten I think. Can you imagine trying to bite down on that thing? My mouth hurts thinking about it.

[–]yonthickie 4 points5 points ago

Only just dawned on me that they are not native to the US. You do have racoons though and according to 101 Dalmations so does London. I have realised that it may be hard for all of us to remember that our own common wildlife is not the background to everyone's life. Except Australia's of course, even aussie's must see them as odd.

[–]Beeblewokiba 2 points3 points ago

We've got echidnas in Australia though, they're like a bigger hedgehog with an anteater face, a pouch, and they lay eggs!

[–]CaptainDjango 0 points1 point ago

And let me guess, they fucking kill you too.

[–]Beeblewokiba 1 point2 points ago

Only if you crash your car trying to avoid hitting one as it crosses the road. I think they might take the prize for 'Weirdest looking but most harmless Australian animal'. The platypus is venomous, kangaroos and emus can kick your guts out, koalas can get aggro and have big tree-climbing claws, hell, even a wombat can crush your hand with its arse or bite you, but echidnas? They just roll up in a ball, like on the 5 cent coin.

[–]CaptainDjango 1 point2 points ago

Well you've won me over, those things are pretty damn cute.

[–]yonthickie 0 points1 point ago

Absolutely agree! Australian wildlife you can safely love! Who'd a thought it?

[–]Ciznit 0 points1 point ago

They also have a 4-headed penis.

[–]MamaGrr 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I've only ever seen them in petstores. I think that'd be awesome to see them in the wild! We do have racoons, just seen one as road kill lol

[–]yonthickie 1 point2 points ago

That's where we see most hedgehogs. They seem to have little road sense.

[–]Seruz 8 points9 points ago

They are intended for protection, nothing else.

[–]waterexpert 7 points8 points ago

Actually they can use them as sort of a cushion when falling up to 20 feet and they are very good for swimming.

[–]VeryWrongImpression 12 points13 points ago

They're also useful when escaping from a prison made out of balloons.

[–]Eaux 1 point2 points ago

The swimming part is more that they can be buoyant. Hedgehogs don't propel themselves with their quills.

[–]gamerx2132 7 points8 points ago

That would be so cool

[–]waterexpert 3 points4 points ago

That's what I'm saying... lol

[–]Eaux 2 points3 points ago

I wasn't disagreeing with you, just providing follow-up information.

[–]majormajor13 0 points1 point ago

I don't know, he is a water expert after all...

[–]Eaux 1 point2 points ago

Checkmate, drytheists?

[–]screampuff 2 points3 points ago

Better not let him near a porcupine.

[–]gasteropod 5 points6 points ago

My bloody dog brings home hedgehogs all the time. He will just be covered in blood and then drop a dead hedgehog at my feet.

It's actually rather adorable.

[–]Kingdomcum 21 points22 points ago

The fuck man.

[–]xaelyn 14 points15 points ago

"The Fuck Man" sounds like a porn whose author stopped giving a shit when it came time to title.

[–]VeryWrongImpression 3 points4 points ago

The name's Man. Fuck, Man.

I like my titties shaken. Not stirred.

[–]wheredapartyat 1 point2 points ago

When the fuck man came to the title.

[–]ViolaPurpurea 2 points3 points ago

Dogs just need to hunt down everything they see and kill them

[–]cubistpanther 3 points4 points ago

My brother's dog has a habit of murdering hedgehogs given the chance. Seeing a normally placid lovely dog sporting a foaming wide eyed expression with a bloody mouth full of hedgehog quills is actually quite disturbing. They're killing machines.

[–]saki604 4 points5 points ago

this was so adorable I almost punched myself in the face.

[–]VeryWrongImpression 1 point2 points ago

You, uh, might want to see a therapist about that...

[–]jenniferinalaska 1 point2 points ago

This is exactly what my cat would do! She does this to brushes and anything with sharp corners.

[–]Jedditor 1 point2 points ago

I need to punch a bear just to feel manly again. Damn you, sweet and adorable cat.

[–]loldonthate 0 points1 point ago

so itchy..must scratch

[–]David3497 1 point2 points ago

Hes combing his hair

[–]kraken_kitty 0 points1 point ago

That poor hedgie is probably scared shitless D:

I hope s/he was placed back in their little house afterwards to just have a little quiet time . . .

[–]VikingsVsPirates 1 point2 points ago

that looks like it feels so good!

[–]mackduck 0 points1 point ago

spines don't put badgers off- or a strong cat- you just put your paws into the soft bit, pry open and eat from stonach to spine. Looks a bit liks a hollowed out hedgehog...

[–]Deuceonyogoose 0 points1 point ago

Itchy Kitty!!!!

[–]kinguzumaki 0 points1 point ago

"Oooooohhhh Goooooddd yeeess...! Mr. Hedgehog, don't EVEEEERRR chaaaange.....oooohhhhh yeeeaaahhhhh....!"

BETTER THAN SEX

[–]Bulls729 1 point2 points ago

Clearly not an Australian Hedgehog.

[–]RhinoDoom 1 point2 points ago

I thought the cat was an otter at first. That would have brought the fun level up a few notches.

[–]ilesal 1 point2 points ago

Have you seen the ticks and fleas on a hedgehog? Now the cats gonna have them.

[–]JetBrink 0 points1 point ago

Not if its a pet that has had them removed

[–]TheHerbalGerbil -2 points-1 points ago

Yeah OP, I saw that like three days ago on /r/videos too.

[–]rdpulfer 2 points3 points ago

The hedgehog is probably thinking, "Worst. Defense Mechanism. Ever."

[–]neostead2000 1 point2 points ago

Unless you have touched a hedgehog, those things fucking hurt

[–]argv_minus_one 0 points1 point ago

Cat has made a new best friend.

[–]neostead2000 0 points1 point ago

Christ, that cat has balls, hedgehog spines hurt sooo much

[–]Metrollolsta 1 point2 points ago

Being a owner of a hedgehog no other pet crosses on the same side of the street.(they keep their distance)

[–]enamresu 0 points1 point ago

Your cat now has fleas.

[–]scrash 1 point2 points ago

anyone have any more videos have cute hedgehogs? plis?

[–]daveshow07 0 points1 point ago

That's not at all a real hedgehog. Threatened hedgehogs will lunge at a creature that insists on bothering them. Looks like a catnip filled cat toy.

[–]schmeryn 1 point2 points ago

Nature's round brush.

[–]zelosdomingo 0 points1 point ago

I always confuse hedgehogs with porcupines.

I imagine it would be much more unpleasant to rub your face on a porcupine.

[–]horses_around 0 points1 point ago

aw....... a perfect scratching post.

[–]brianbot5000 1 point2 points ago

Can we repost this about 20 more times in the next few days? Thanks.

Uuuuuuuuuh yeeeeeeaaaah baby. That's the stuff riiiiiiiiiight theeeere.

[–]Icedrive 0 points1 point ago

I was bitten by a hedgehog once. That hurts way more than touching its spikes, I can tell you that.

[–]iamapagan 1 point2 points ago

I don't know if this has been said yet but:

When a hedgehog is relaxed, as that one is, the 'spikes' are not sharp. It's basically like running your hand over a brush. When they roll up, the spikes stick up straight, and that's when they hurt.

[–]babytaz777 0 points1 point ago

sort of the same feeling when you get a stubbly hair cut

[–]SargentMcGreger 0 points1 point ago

the hedgehog is not amused

[–]ruski_brewski 0 points1 point ago

Russian cats. Always.

[–]hirudora 0 points1 point ago

Ooooh yeaaaaaaah.......

[–]catncradle 2 points3 points ago

has anyone here ever been spiked by a hedgehog before? :F

[–]sortaplainnonjane 4 points5 points ago

Depends on what you mean by "spiked." They don't shoot their quills like a porcupine; hedgies raise them in defense. So, yes, been poked by one while holding it since I wasn't careful in how I picked her up. The recommended way is to scoop them up from the bottom, avoiding the quills and not squishing their sides. It doesn't really hurt, just a small jab; when I sew and accidentally stab my finger with the needle, that hurts worse.

[–]cyberslick188 6 points7 points ago

I dont think any animal shoots its quills.

[–]neutralmind 10 points11 points ago

All cone snail species are equipped with a battery of toxic harpoons which can fire in any direction, even backwards. Some of these toxins can be fatal to humans.

[–]cyberslick188 2 points3 points ago

I've looked this up, and the more I read about it, it seems as though the cone snails simply jab their stingers rather than actually shoot them out. Considering they are under water generally, it would take an enormous amount of energy (relatively speaking) to shoot a projectile out with any penetrating power or even accuracy.

I believe I remain correct unless you have something else. This is very interesting. I think the wiki you quoted from was just a poor choice of words on their behalf. I haven't found anything that says the snails actually shoot anything.

From that same wiki you quoted: "Cone snails use a hypodermic-like modified radula tooth and a venom gland to attack and paralyze their prey before engulfing it. The tooth is sometimes likened to a dart or a harpoon. It is barbed and can be extended some distance out from the mouth of the snail, at the end of the proboscis."

[–]neutralmind 2 points3 points ago

I guess so too based on the videos I watched.

Not directly related to the topic but I remember going to a talk on this and the speaker mentioned that they have no idea how they manage the bag of stingers in their body and how they let a harpoon travel through the proboscis without puncturing itself.

[–]sortaplainnonjane 4 points5 points ago

http://www.snopes.com/critters/wild/porcupine.asp

I stand corrected, at least on porcupines.

[–]Rvish 5 points6 points ago

Tarantulas do.

[–]sirblastalot 28 points29 points ago

Tarantulas aren't animals.

They're demons.

[–]cyberslick188 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't call tarantula hair a quill, but I guess you've proved me somewhat wrong.

[–]Naldort 0 points1 point ago

I think that the cat would only really be in danger is spiking itself it it tried to attack or bite the hedgehog. Can you imagine trying to bite down on that?

[–]Sex_E_Searcher 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. Woke up his his dorm.

[–]castle_danger 0 points1 point ago

Because it's a repost from 4 days ago. I'm not upvoting the same gif in the same week.

[–]omphalos008 0 points1 point ago

Haha well that would explain it then.

[–]dabernathy89 -3 points-2 points ago

am i the only one bothered by "aren't just" instead of "just aren't"

[–]lonedresssock 2 points3 points ago

Yes, you are.

The title makes perfect sense and conveys the intended meaning; whereas "just aren't" would have a different meaning.

[–]dabernathy89 -1 points0 points ago

I assumed the intended meaning was that the spikes are incapable of causing harm, hence the cat finding them snuggly. You're saying that the implication is that the spikes are capable of both harm and cuddliness, which seems strange.

[–]nowxisxforever 0 points1 point ago

You're saying that the implication is that the spikes are capable of both harm and cuddliness, which seems strange.

That's precisely the implication I got. I don't understand why you think it's strange.

[–]dabernathy89 0 points1 point ago

Are hedgehog spikes actually painful?

[–]Hedgehogs4Me 0 points1 point ago

Not really. Usually you don't even bleed when you get pricked, which is fairly uncommon. You can put an angry hedgehog upside down on your hand and even when it wriggles around you won't get speared (the bed of nails effect combined with that they're not actually all that sharp).

The teeth, however, are a completely different story. Under all that fat is a jaw muscle stronger than a god damn tyrannosaur.
