Trivia: Gary Gottlieb is the head of the audio department at Webster and is the original composer of the Meow Mix song

[–]kidintheshadows 29 points30 points ago

Does that count as Cat Facts?

[–]NextName 3 points4 points ago

And here I was thinking that this was my professor Gabriele Gottlieb. I wonder how common of a last name Gottlieb is in Germany.

[–]narrowtux 8 points9 points ago

German here, it's not very common.

[–]tophattomato 37 points38 points ago

That's because it's primarily a Jewish name. For some reason, I believe Germany had a steep decline in the Jewish population not too long ago.

[–]lastacct -1 points0 points ago

Dude I am all for holocoust jokes but winky faces are not cool.

[–]BICEPS 1 point2 points ago

It's a really nice name though imo, translated it means God lov(e). Also it was the forename of Gottlieb Daimler, one of the founders of the car brand Mercedes-Benz, if anyone gives a fuck.

[–]narrowtux 0 points1 point ago

Oh yes, we have some variations of the name Gottlieb as forenames, like Gottfried (god piec(e)).

[–]PolarBearIcePop 0 points1 point ago

My mom's family is Godfrey, it's irish/english but no doubt having a little german in it.

EDIT: pronounced god-free

[–]mattsulli 4 points5 points ago

More trivia: the "Amadeus" in Mozart's name is actually a translation of his given German name "Gottlieb."

Edited to acknowledge tophattomato's mastery of the English language.

[–]tophattomato 6 points7 points ago

Translation, not transliteration.

Transliteration is when you take a word in one alphabet and write it in another alphabet, such when you write Chekhov instead of Чехов for the benefit of those who cannot read Cyrillic.

Taking a word in one language, understanding its meaning and using a word in another language to express that meaning is translation. Gottlieb => Amadeus is translation. German to Latin, if anyone cares.

Edit: mattsulli's original comment said 'transliteration' instead of 'translation'.

[–]mattsulli 1 point2 points ago

TIL, thanks. I've been misusing that word for years.

[–]tophattomato 0 points1 point ago

[–]mattsulli 0 points1 point ago

I've edited the edit as a result of your edit. Enjoy.

[–]Hounmlayn -2 points-1 points ago

Extra trivia: The word Gottlieb is caveman language for the name 'Nicolas Cage'.

[–]MyNiftyUsername 0 points1 point ago

He also teaches at meremac community college.

[–]Frank1smynam3 0 points1 point ago

Former head.

[–]nullibicity 37 points38 points ago

That is some bit of trivia.

[–]cumfarts 1 point2 points ago

I found it rather trivial

[–]string97bean 68 points69 points ago

I used to park illegally all the time at college and the just took the ticket money out of my student loans. In retrospect it was a terrible idea because almost 20 years later I am still paying for parking tickets.

[–]camerontylek 62 points63 points ago

I went to Webster University where this picture was taken, and never registered my car. So I never had to pay all the University tickets I amassed because no one knew whose car it was.

[–]errbodiesmad 30 points31 points ago

I do this too. I park up on the grass near the parking lot for 10 hours of classes twice a week and literally brush the ticket off and leave.

They have my license plate number, so if they called the actual cops I would get in trouble, but there's never been a real ticket so fuck it.

[–]Osiris32 48 points49 points ago

My campus cops are actual cops. Academy trained, sworn law enforcement. You can't pull that here.

However, the big parking lot is BIG, and is never really 100% full, so there isn't exactly a good excuse to park illegally. Even on the busiest days that lot is only about 75% full, and there's a gravel lot beyond it that no one ever uses.

[–]chrisms150 8 points9 points ago

Same where I went. Except parking was always hit or miss for commuters. They'd oversell the lots using an equation on how likely any given commuter would be using the lot at any given time.... some years that didn't work out so hot and people ended up getting pissed they didn't have parking spots and nowhere to park without being ticketed.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

See, that's the one awesome part about my college. You don't have to buy parking passes!! It's first come, first served.

[–]E-rye 1 point2 points ago

It's first come first serve among the people with parking passes where I go to uni.

[–]TesticleToe 1 point2 points ago

What's awesome is attending a school that properly allots their paid parking.

Unless you go to Rural Fucktown University. Then I suppose first come would work.

[–]Osiris32 5 points6 points ago

No, what's awesome is having a school right next to a major city that doesn't gouge it's students for a few more bucks simply because they have to commute. Which all students at my college do, since there is no on-campus housing.

[–]GoodGuyAlex 5 points6 points ago

Our campus cops are the same way. And there's lots of parking available in the big lot, but parking passes start at $225 a semester, and that's to park 3 miles away at the football stadium. On campus parking lot parking is $275 a semester, and parking garage parking is $325, I believe.

[–]kileel 2 points3 points ago

Parking at my school starts at $400. If you want to park in a garage, it's $1000. Fuck private schools...

[–]GoodGuyAlex 0 points1 point ago

Holy crap. I thought it was bad here. I'm so sorry.

[–]Jaerdo 1 point2 points ago

That is nothing. Parking at my school (public university in Canada) starts at 1600 per semester.

Students who live outside the city literally cannot afford to commute in. They are forced to rent nearby or live in residence.

Oh, and residence is priced accordingly to match market rates in the area. The only people who stay there are international student who don't know better, and first year students who think it is worth it to live in worse conditions for the same cost because you are 5 minutes closer to class.

[–]dilberry 2 points3 points ago

The on-campus parking (non-reserved) at York University in Toronto is over $1,300.00 academic year (6 months).

[–]GoodGuyAlex 1 point2 points ago

Wow, that's ridiculous. I'm so sorry to hear that.

[–]dilberry 0 points1 point ago

It is ridiculous :(

[–]Jaerdo 1 point2 points ago

University of Alberta. On campus parking 1600 per semester. Or you can get off campus parking for 900 or so and take a 15 minute train ride.

[–]BigManWalter 0 points1 point ago

At McGill, it's $17 a day. No passes.

[–]dilberry 0 points1 point ago

Pretty close, $15 a day at York without buying a pass. You get to the $15 maximum if you park long enough to attend one class.

[–]codepoet 1 point2 points ago

That's almost certainly not a coincidence, now is it?

[–]dilberry 0 points1 point ago

No, it's not and it really annoys me. Come to class for 3 hours, or stay from the morning to the evening and still pay $15. What is even more ludicrous is that there are something like 5 parking garages and 4 big lots - all full, all charging the same rates. The school must make an absolute killing off parking alone.

[–]SammyLocked 0 points1 point ago

Wait seriously? It's just 50 for passes, no matter where it is. Jeeze, that's outrageous.

[–]Osiris32 1 point2 points ago

No price to pay to park here. It's free, and open to the public. Yay, community colleges!!

[–]GoodGuyAlex 2 points3 points ago

That would be so nice. Mine's a state school, about $20k a year (counting Room & Board), but there isn't enough parking for everyone, so they charge exorbitant amounts. They were $100 more last year, but we protested, so they lowered them.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

State community college, for two associates and a tech certificate I paid a grand total of $14k. No room-and-board costs, because there is no on-campus housing. It's at the junction of two highways, so traffic is never bad, and if you want to take the bus, it's considered to be a transit center. Including books, I wasn't paying more than $1500 a term most of the time.

[–]GoodGuyAlex 0 points1 point ago

That's awesome. How are you doing now?

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

Working as a union stage hand (a direct result of a class I was taking for my Music Technology AS) and making good money at it. The other degree is in criminal justice, and I'm trying to get on with my local county sheriff's office, however right now just about every agency in the area is under hiring freezes or lateral-only hires due to budget issues.

[–]dragoneye 1 point2 points ago

My school is really stupid, we have Campus Security, which are pretty much no better than well paid rent-a-cops and then we have a RCMP detachment specifically for the university. Campus security can't actually do anything other than call the RCMP if you are doing something illegal. Even when they show up to something, you can just walk away from them and they can't do anything.

It seems like there is one too many layers of security here.

The kicker to this is, when they need nighttime security guards (say for events or buildings being built), they never use campus security, they use some outside company.

[–]ddb1 0 points1 point ago

My campus cops are actual orangutans. Circus trained, sworn feces-slingers.

[–]dscribbz 0 points1 point ago

Same with my old school, except there isn't any parking.

[–]ethraax 0 points1 point ago

That's the excuse my shitty university parking services dept. uses. "There's always parking space in W lot!" (about 2 miles from your classes or dorm, enjoy the walk!) Assholes...

[–]aengvs 2 points3 points ago

so fuck it.

The best reason to do anything ever.

[–]Pullet-Surprise 0 points1 point ago

My school doesnt have mine on file either but when I went to register my car at the DMV a ticket I received at the school showed up and had to be paid before I could register my vehicle for the year. Be careful

[–]errbodiesmad 0 points1 point ago

I've never thought of this haha.

Next time I go to the DMV I'll have like twenty something fifteen dollar tickets to pay off.

[–]andytuba 0 points1 point ago

In that case, you should also be aware that there are cameras and databases everywhere that cops and DMV have access to, like EZPass toll booth charges. This data has historically been used to issue speeding tickets and (IIRC) as evidence in court.

tl;dr: You can never escape your past.

[–]deadmansstare 0 points1 point ago

Dumb fat and entitled.

[–]netinept 0 points1 point ago

I would be concerned about getting towed. It is their lot so if you are trespassing, they have the right to tow you (depending on state laws.)

[–]bearsa113609 0 points1 point ago

My jeep is painted in a Jurassic Park Scheme. Everyone knows when I do something wrong on the road or park like an ass =(
On the other hand, I drive good and don't park like an ass, not saying anyone here is except

[–]meedly 0 points1 point ago

Where do you go? Theres a Jurassic Park jeep at my school.

[–]bearsa113609 0 points1 point ago

Rock Hill, SC, although there is a green jeep with a JP logo on it, but not full color.

[–]bassplayinfool 0 points1 point ago

Des Plaines?

[–]bearsa113609 0 points1 point ago

Rock Hill, SC. Only replica I know of on the East Coast.
I'm not Boomerjinks if that's what you mean.

[–]raleigh15gotbanned 0 points1 point ago

Why would you paint your car in a Jurassic Park scheme??

[–]bearsa113609 0 points1 point ago

Because I like Jurassic Park and one of my goals in life was to own a JP Replica Jeep. Not a logo or anything, a full replica of the exact jeep mentioned in the book (movie jeeps were slightly different, book jeeps were custom for InGen and had anti-charging measures such as reinforced doors along with the stripe). Goal - Achieved.

[–]High_Born_Manitee 1 point2 points ago

To everyone bragging about how they avoid paying parking tickets and the campus police, you're full of shit. That is all...

[–]xtelosx 2 points3 points ago

Actually if you go to a smaller university that doesn't have real cops issuing the tickets if you never register your car with them they never pay the fee to look up your plates and send you a bill. My first year I registered my car and they just put it on my tuition bill. I got a different car before second year and amassed probably 20 tickets before finishing school and they never showed up on my bill.

[–]Shitbagsoldier 1 point2 points ago

We had a "student leader" parking area at the front of my school. I got away with parking their for a year because they didnt have a definition of a what a student leader was listed anywhere.

Over the summer they took the signs away though so I lost my advantage.

[–]AussieSceptic 1 point2 points ago

I used to work at an Australian University. We'd just send your license plate details to the roads authority to get your address. If it wasn't paid after a couple of reminders, we'd send it to the courts for prosecution.

[–]trolox 1 point2 points ago

At my university, at a certain point (maybe 3 outstanding tickets) they'll just have your car towed. Seems like your university had no idea what it was doing if there was no actual consequence in place for unregistered parking infringements.

I'm sitting at 2 tickets on my non-university-registered car but I don't really have the guts to test it any longer.

[–]coogie 0 points1 point ago

Your university didn't have a campus police department with access to records?

[–]SirNoName 0 points1 point ago

Used to do this, until once I was walking back to my car, and a parking attendant was waiting.
He told me he had a ow truck on the way, but let me drive off. He said if my car was seen on campus again, ever, it would be immediately booted and towed.

[–]ethraax 0 points1 point ago

They issue you (more expensive) tickets from the municipality if you don't have any school parking stickers on your car. It would be like getting a parking ticket in any other town or city - you can't really "run" from it.

However, if you have a leftover sticker on your car from when you used to attend school, they sometimes issue you school tickets, and you can just not pay them since you've already graduated or dropped out.

[–]russiangn 1 point2 points ago

This is an interesting idea. I used to go to the College across the street freshman year to study because their library was a lot nicer and quieter. So, I got a ticket one day and I went to the bursar and I was like "I don't go here so I am not sure how I can pay this" and she told me to throw it away since they don't know that it's my car. True story.

[–]MrNewking -4 points-3 points ago

[–]amandacoch -2 points-1 points ago

This is why I am glad I am not at the Webster St. Louis campus.

[–]AsDevilsRun 27 points28 points ago

I got a parking ticket the first week at one of my colleges. The parking ticket was cheaper than a one semester parking pass. Solution: keep it with me, put it on the windshield every time I parked. Campus parking people just assumed someone had already ticketed me. Or they didn't care.

EDIT: I'll clarify that I don't recommend this. Due to the...culture...of that college, it seemed possible to get away with it and I got lucky. You probably won't.

[–]gsn42 8 points9 points ago

I tried this, the parking enforcement just stuck another ticket in the envelope.

[–]NextName 5 points6 points ago

Also, most parking enforcement will either have color-coded tickets or they'll just check the date on the ticket and assign you another one.

[–]guitar_vigilante 0 points1 point ago

Same here, my buddy parked his car in one of the lots, and then a few days later when we went to go use the car, he had three tickets on his windshield.

[–]Otterfan 1 point2 points ago

That's because parking enforcement officers have short term memories just like real human beings.

[–]Viral12 6 points7 points ago

At our university they'll ticket you every time the DOTS guy drives by. So you can forget to pay the meter, walk out of your 3 hour class and have 5 tickets on your windshield.

[–]AsDevilsRun 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, I just figured, "What's the harm?" and tried it anyway. I assumed there was a chance they would just ticket me multiple times, but when they didn't...

That school was a joke.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 1 point2 points ago

LMFAO, there’s no way they can all stand, though. Talk about small dick syndrome.

[–]rellek13 0 points1 point ago

At my school parking tickets were $60 for the first offense, $100 for the second and after the second they booted your car-- it cost $200 to remove the boot and you were then forced to buy a parking pass for a couple hundred dollars

[–]deadsoon 2 points3 points ago

I would burn a building down.

[–]ethraax 0 points1 point ago

They just stack more tickets on over here. The most I've heard is someone getting 13 tickets on their car (over 13 days) - they were a resident and simply didn't use their car that month, but they parked in a poorly marked area that had recently been converted to employee parking.

[–]hollowmosh 0 points1 point ago

I must remember this...

[–]NocturnalGamer 1 point2 points ago

That blows...

[–]tr77 -1 points0 points ago

Are you sure you are legally required to pay those? They aren't a government entity that can give out legally binding fines, the most they can do is prevent you from graduating if you hadn't already.

[–]gnbglider 47 points48 points ago

His rebuttal is actually pretty good.

[–]Farren246 9 points10 points ago

Well that addresses everything: apparently they have a parking garage a 5 minute walk from most buildings. Better than my university provides.

[–]gnbglider 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, my university is really small, so the parking lot is on campus BUT to get a pass you have to apply during the summer, and then you are put into a lottery system based on how many people apply (they only have so many a year), and then you still have to pay a few hundred dollars for it. Oh, and the chances of finding a spot on campus after 9am are slim to none, so you usually have to park at the stadium which is a block or two away.

Moral of the story, parking sucks at universities. That's not what you are paying for. If they invested in turning the whole campus into parking spots instead of classrooms (and then updating classrooms), well, come ON! It's like that simpsons episode: I want everything in one bag and I don't want the bag to be heavy. Fine, we can turn your campus into a parking lot but then we can't have classrooms. You can't have it all!

[–]ddb1 2 points3 points ago

Fine, we can turn your campus into a parking lot but then we can't have classrooms. You can't have it all!

Eventually they'll learn of this amazing new building technique called "multiple stories"

[–]Farren246 1 point2 points ago

I don't see why every university doesn't have a parking garage (or two, or three). The fees taken from students and faculty paying to park there would more than cover the cost.

[–]r_Dubwc 15 points16 points ago

, the university increased parking fines for the first time in a decade in response to many students not paying their parking citations.

Because making people pay more will make them pay the ticket.

[–]dekuscrub 1 point2 points ago

They end up paying the tickets regardless, or getting towed.

[–]Robot_Ghost 1 point2 points ago

This should just be at the top so we don't have people trashing this guy.

[–]gnbglider 1 point2 points ago

I know, his argument was well constructed and solid.

Thank you, I learned much from this post.

The soooner you get a job and start earning $20,000 a year the sooner you'll begin to get over the dissapointment that you paid $20,000 a year just to fuck around for 4 years.

[–]rcinsf -4 points-3 points ago

You chose the wrong major. I make > 20k in 2 months. :-)

[–]DivideByHero 0 points1 point ago

Good for you! I hope you place the proper emphasis on savings, because unless you are an entreprenuer your income is simply a number in a payroll system which someone is reviewing every pay cycle.

[–]alancar 7 points8 points ago

Are Emmanuel Lewis, Alex Karras, and Susan Clark on faculty at the University?

[–]nullibicity 3 points4 points ago

I wonder how many young Redditors will get this reference.

[–]Sgttrentz 17 points18 points ago

I didn't

[–]nullibicity 3 points4 points ago

It's the cast of the TV show Webster, the other '80s show where a white family adopts an adorable little black boy.

[–]RedSchecter 3 points4 points ago

Gilbert Gottlieb

[–]BrilliantBotanist 4 points5 points ago

$50?! That's a deal. It's $330 to park on my college campus.

[–]trolox 10 points11 points ago

$50 is the fine for parking in a reserved spot. $330 is presumably the cost of a parking pass for an entire term.

[–]BrilliantBotanist 2 points3 points ago

Ah, gotcha. Yep, $330 is for the whole year.

[–]Sqpon 0 points1 point ago

Ours is a lot less than that. I wanna say $190

[–]kileel 0 points1 point ago

Ours starts at $400 and goes up to $1000....

[–]andytuba 1 point2 points ago

One of the students attending the university where i live posted a picture in our sub last year of a dozen tickets on a table. "Still cheaper than a parking pass."

[–]natlight 2 points3 points ago

Ha! I went to school there and I can't tell you how infuriating the parking can get. I ended up taking mostly night classes to avoid the parking situation and tickets. Turns out the adjunct professors were better at night anyway.

[–]cavitycreep 0 points1 point ago

It's not that bad anymore. They've got about 6 or 7 different lots now, and the parking garage always has spaces.

[–]StoryGopher 1 point2 points ago

At my school I wasn't going to pay 400 fucking dollar for parking so I parked in a residential area and walked 15 minutes to school.

[–]TOCMasterK 0 points1 point ago

uphill bothways in the blizzardy snow

[–]RetroGhost 0 points1 point ago

Screw you Webster U kids, always parking in the highschool parking lot! WE NEEDED THOSE.

[–]gapball 0 points1 point ago

That's funny, I recognized the name and saw the university. I stumbled across some knowledge database on Alfred Hitchcock's directing style once upon a time. I think that's where I recognize the name from.

[–]brbrcrbtr 0 points1 point ago

Not only is my college parking free, there's enough spaces for everyone! Woo!

[–]ryankevin15 -1 points0 points ago

AFLAC!

[–]PalatinPorteau -2 points-1 points ago

I was thinking 'Gilbert Gottlieb' (the comedian) and "Is it worth it?" is the VERY thing that popped into my head. Fuck yes I'll park in Gilbert Gottlieb's parking spot! His voice scrapes my ears; turnabout is fair play. Walk, you noxious tone!

But since it's some other Gottlieb... nvrmnd.

[–]PalatinPorteau 0 points1 point ago

I am relieved! Thank you!

[–]HobKing 0 points1 point ago

No, you were thinking of Gilbert Gottfried.

[–]PalatinPorteau 0 points1 point ago

And so I was. Thanks for the correction!

[–]last2zero 0 points1 point ago

Meh get a bike and bike around / to campus.

Not so long ago I was paying $350 / month for a parking space... It doesn't really get better once you're out of school.

[–]Time_Paradox 0 points1 point ago

Building plans for this school include a new dorm for 1000 people and a new parking lot for 400. Doesn't make sense.

[–]thenameisnobody 0 points1 point ago

My favorite part at my university is trying to park at the on campus apartment complex (~3000 residents) to visit a friend. They provide a grand total of about 15 parking spots for public usage. The nearest free public parking is about a mile away.

[–]hijackhijinx 0 points1 point ago

Similar situation: I missed the deadline for graduation at my university by about a week. The lady said I may have to wait until Winter 2013 to receive my degree certificate. I calmly and explicitly replied: "I pay twenty thousand a year for three years to attend this institution, over twenty of which I am in debt." There was a small awkward silence, and then she began to file my graduation application..

[–]PepperAnn90 0 points1 point ago

Webster Groves in general has shitty parking...

[–]tropicSupreme 0 points1 point ago

[–]Colli33 1 point2 points ago

It's pretty ridiculous how bad parking is at some schools.

[–]Schreber 0 points1 point ago

I think it's every school not just some. They (the permit office/school police department) issue more permits than they know they have space for because they know that at the begin of the term there will be more student than will be at the end (due to people either withdrawing or simply finding alt. means to get in/on campus).

[–]Dunkelz 1 point2 points ago

I've found out that a lot of people who bitch about there being no parking on their campus are showing up like 5 minutes before class starts and expecting to get a parking lot in the closest lot/not having to walk at all to class.

[–]DivideByHero 0 points1 point ago

They'll be late for everything their entire lives. Everyone who complains about parking should have to take the bus for a year.

[–]Dunkelz 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. I commuted to college my first couple years and realized that making it so I'd get there 5-10 minutes before class starts would not cut it, and I don't have anyone to blame for the lack of parking spots but myself. I could shout and shout about how bullshit it is that so many people were in the lot already, but if I had come earlier, then I wouldn't have a problem. So I decided to time it so I'd get there at least 30 minutes early, if not an hour, yea it would suck leaving earlier for morning classes but then I'd have plenty of time to find parking.

[–]swuboo 0 points1 point ago

That's lovely, but it wouldn't necessarily have served you well at my school.

All the commuter lots on the main campus filled up quite quickly, usually by 6 AM; an hour might or might not be enough time to find a spot. Usually yes, but not always.

On the other hand, there was one lot that always had space, but it was separated from campus by a twenty minute bus ride which ran on a half hour schedule, which might make an hour insufficient time if you missed your bus.

And, of course, that lot tended to flood badly, to the point that after any given rainstorm, you could go and watch flooded cars being towed away by the dozens. If you wanted to park on a rainy day, the only reliable way to do it was to get there the day before.

Entitled college kid...I am shocked

[–]HobKing 1 point2 points ago

I hate that people think this is a successfully snarky comment. He's basically arguing with himself.

"Is it worth it?" I don't know, but you're the one paying the $20,000! If it's not, then you're the dumbass!

[–]lmnopqrsthrowaway -2 points-1 points ago

I'm too lazy to look for it, but will someone please post and upvote the professor's response to this photo? He totally pwns the student who added the note.

[–]yip_yip_yip_uh_huh -3 points-2 points ago

I knew a woman who worked at Webster University and she was soooooooooooooooo hot

[–]bigfruitbasket -4 points-3 points ago

Just park where you are supposed to. When you go to ball game of any kind, just sit in your assigned seats.

How fucking hard it that? Damn I'm pissed while writing this!!!

[–]Jrwech -5 points-4 points ago

Back when this was taken, $20,000 was a lot of money.

Edit: Whoa, calm down everyone. $20000 would be awesome to have in my bank account, but it is not that much to pay for a decent college.

[–]infamous-spaceman 4 points5 points ago

Where do you live that paying 20,000 a year for tuition is normal??!?!

[–]minimission 4 points5 points ago

or where $20,000 isn't a lot of money.

[–]MCML 1 point2 points ago

I'm paying $25,000 a year :( and i'm at one of the less expensive schools in the area.

[–]tittyfister69 1 point2 points ago

I'm paying a little more than $35,000 a year. Fuck private schools.

[–]harrisonfire -1 points0 points ago

No snark intended, but attending a private school is a privilege. A choice.

[–]elise81 0 points1 point ago

Many private schools have more financial aid available than you think - often bringing the price down.

[–]tittyfister69 0 points1 point ago

In todays society, getting a higher education is required if you are looking to get ahead in life. And seeing as how my school was the only one I got accepted into, I didn't have much of a choice.

[–]harrisonfire 0 points1 point ago

In todays society, getting a higher education is required if you are looking to get ahead in life.

Mostly true. Learning a trade is still a valid option.

And seeing as how my school was the only one I got accepted into, I didn't have much of a choice.

Did you apply to any public Unis?

[–]tittyfister69 0 points1 point ago

I did, didn't get accepted. What probably helped me get into my school was that my guitar teacher is a professor for the music department.

[–]harrisonfire 0 points1 point ago

Well, good luck. That's a hell of a burden. I hope you get something out of it.

[–]tittyfister69 1 point2 points ago

Oh, I switched majors and am looking to transfer schools as soon as possible. Realized music should of remained a hobby. But thanks.

[–]stewie650 0 points1 point ago

I am paying 3000 per semester. State University at Texas

[–]rcinsf 0 points1 point ago

I paid about 1100/semester. The 90s were AWESOME (and that was upper division, lower was around 800 or so :-)

[–]stewie650 0 points1 point ago

That is pretty cool. Luckily for me my school pays for all my costs

[–]Sockeymeow -2 points-1 points ago

America

[–]infamous-spaceman 0 points1 point ago

Is it really that much though, like for your average university? I'm in Canada and i'm paying 6 grand for a year for tuition. Even the really prestigious universities aren't more then 10 grand typically.

[–]TunaCowboy 0 points1 point ago

If you include room and board one year at USC will run you about $60,000.

[–]infamous-spaceman 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit, what do you get for that kind of money? For that I could pay the tuition at school (the rate for an international student), get a decent two bedroom apartment, buy a car, pay its insurance and still have lots left over for food and luxury items. Hell I probably wont spend much more then 60 grand for my entire time at university unless I go for a masters or higher.

[–]BipBopBoop 0 points1 point ago

It is insane. If I had $60,000, I could choose to not work for 10 years.

[–]TunaCowboy 0 points1 point ago

Tuition per semester is $22,000 (just tuition, there are still mandatory fees and of course room and board):

http://www.usc.edu/academics/classes/term_20123/tuition_and_fees.html

[–]Otterfan 0 points1 point ago

Students at USC tend to come from very wealthy families. Almost every other US university is cheaper.

[–]BipBopBoop 1 point2 points ago

It all really depends. There are so many variables here, such as whether you attend community college, big state universities, private institutions, and where you are located.

The local community college charges about $1,700 for a full semester and a greatly reduced rate for additional hours past 12 hours.

The local university charges about $3,400 a semester with the same reduced rate past 12 hours.

The state university is around $4,600 a semester + reduced rate past 12.

[–]hipsterdefender 0 points1 point ago

The sticker price for my college is $60,000 per year. Most students don't pay that much, but that's a typical price for many (though not most) American colleges and Universities.

[–]gbs5009 2 points3 points ago

This makes me think of Mitch Hedberg. I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

[–]auntacid 1 point2 points ago

Mitt Romney is a Redditor?!

[–]Jrwech 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that did not come across they way I had intended. $20000 would help me out a ton. But sadly, it is not that much to pay for higher education.

[–]gkiltz -2 points-1 points ago

RIGHT ON!!!!!

[–]infalliblefallacy -3 points-2 points ago

I remember seeing this ages ago and I never really cared, but now I actually go to this school and I feel like I have vicariously gained some karma :3

[–]SuperSaiyanNoob -3 points-2 points ago

Paying for parking is the dumbest thing a university can do. And every single university does it. And still makes you buy a bus pass.

[–]BigEasyBobcat -2 points-1 points ago

As a student who had to pay $90 a quarter to park OFF campus, parking is ridiculous. I was accidentally parked on campus over the weekend (you could park the weekend until 6:30 am Monday). I went to move it at 12 in the afternoon, only 6 hours after it was supposed to be moved. The fucking dick hole campus police put 4 tickets on my car, each being $75. It was unfortunately at the end of the year, so I had to pay it or else they could hold my transcripts.

[–]wolfavenger -2 points-1 points ago

That teacher is an audio engineering professor at Webster University. He's an asshole. He attempted to write an audio engineering textbook which was turned down by publishers. So what does he do? He publishes it himself at the schools xerox machine and then makes it the required reading for the class. He then proceeds to take cash from his students in class for his own book. He is also bald w/ a long braided rat tail. I learned nothing

[–]Cyberslasher -2 points-1 points ago

[–]GeneraIDisarray -2 points-1 points ago

Haha you have to pay for school...

[–]genericdave -2 points-1 points ago

So, the logic is "I'm paying a ton of money to go to college and I couldn't be bothered to park a bit farther from school and walk a bit. Those things in combination give me the right to be an asshole and take a professor's reserved parking space."

This kid should be in law school, not Webster.
