vietnamese babies after agent orange exposure (i.imgur.com)
submitted 13 days ago by drbooberry
[–]Skeeball_Fanatic 58 points59 points60 points 12 days ago
Awful.
I've spent eight weeks traveling Vietnam, and the terrible after effects of Agent Orange are on ready display.
It's absolutely heartbreaking to see. In Saigon, there are multitudes of alms seekers pushing their little hydrocephalic kids around in carts. It's soul destroying.
To anyone thinking this is ok to joke about, I challenge you to spend some time there and then try to see any humour in this at all.
Those poor, poor people.
[–]wisewiseimsowise -9 points-8 points-7 points 12 days ago
(This is ok to joke about anything)
[–]Skeeball_Fanatic 6 points7 points8 points 12 days ago
I'm not sure if you've posted this message to be antagonistic or if that's really your opinion.
Anyway, I'm not telling anyone what they can and can't joke about. Humour is subjective. I'm challenging people to go there, meet the people, and then see if they still find it funny.
It's easy to sit at a keyboard and poke fun when you've got no connection to it. It's fair game to you, you're almost utterly desensitised to it.
Even though I would never have joked about it beforehand, I've always been affected by sick kids, I definitely can't now. All I think about is the pain, the fear, and the isolation these kids must feel.
There's plenty of affected adults too, horrible deformities, and there's just so little help for them. I can't, and won't, joke about it. It's offensive.
I'm not picking an argument with you over it. If you find it funny, so be it. I don't, and I reiterate that you should go see it first hand and then decide if its still funny.
[–]AzDraon 3 points4 points5 points 12 days ago
I just want to point out that I agree 100% with you. However, you are trying to argue on the internet. It cannot end pretty.
[–]Skeeball_Fanatic 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
Cheers. I'm not really trying to argue, though I'm happy to have a discussion with this person about it.
Like yourself, I learnt long ago that an "I'm right" argument, only goes nowhere on the Internet.
[–]CharismaticKiller -1 points0 points1 point 12 days ago
On your side too. I know it's nothing a like, but it pisses more than if when people joke about death camps. Have you ever been to one to see what it's like and the things they actually made out of those poor people? No.. So shut up.
But then I remember this is the Internet, and r/wtf at that. Salt, my friend, a pinch of salt.
[–]Skeeball_Fanatic 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
Yeah you're probably right.
I don't like to pick fights about it - there's no point. But I do like to discuss it, even though I don't understand it.
[–]golyadkin 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
I can't remember who said it, but they basically argued that a lot of humor is just a way to think about horrible things without falling apart.
Sure. If you're involved and need a mechanism for dealing with it. I see death on a near weekly basis at my work, sometimes horrible and grisly, and I understand that black humour can have it's place.
But if you're a keyboard jockey going "ha ha funny pics of dead kids herpa derpa let's make some jokes" that's just creepy and weird.
What's your stance on it? Are these pictures joke worthy or sad?
[–]golyadkin 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
Probably both, depending on the joke. Slaughterhouse Five was a hilarious book that really brought home to a lot of people the horror of the Dresden bombing. I'm not trying to be offensive here, and I'm not trying to belittle your experiences, but humor can make people think about things they would otherwise choose to shut out. I think we're talking about pretty different kinds of humor.
Sure, I respect your perspective and opinion is different to mine and you're not just being an arse.
I'll never find any humour in poor, deformed, dead kids.
[–]Nytemare3701 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
I've found that there is a time and place for certain kinds of humor, and "in the presence of a person who is genuinely hurt by it" is not one of them. A racist joke can be amusing among people who all understand it's a joke and are not offended, but a person living with racism at the forefront of their lives would not be amused. My $0.02
[–]Skeeball_Fanatic 0 points1 point2 points 11 days ago
To a degree. I still maintain I'll never find any humour in dead and deformed kids.
An Internet forum is unfiltered, so those standards can't really apply in this instance.
That's why I try to be clear that I'm not condemning people for what they find funny. Only encouraging them to see it firsthand and to be affected by the reality of it.
It's easy to feel disconnected to photos on a screen. It's harder when they're whimpering in a cart in front of you, begging for money.
Agreed. Insensitivity is acceptable in a vacuum, but not in a real life scenario. I know I have an "I'm going to hell for this" picture of agent orange kids that I laughed at once, but I laughed at the absurdity of the image, not the suffering of the child.

My grandfather was stationed at Khe Sanh in '68. 4 years ago he died of lymphoma, even though he was extremely healthy for 62 and quit smoking 20 years ago. I have no doubt in my mind that the cancer came from his exposure to agent orange while he was in Vietnam. It's sickening what we'll do to try and win a military conflict.
[–]mamap31 -1 points0 points1 point 12 days ago
A good friend of my parents' recently died from a brain tumor. His doctors believe that it was caused by his exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.
[–]DoctorBarbie89 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
My dad was in Vietnam in '68. I'm lucky I don't have a third leg or something.
[–]Veladora 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
As was my father, the health problems he has now a days are unreal.

[–]beatleforce1 4 points5 points6 points 12 days ago
What the hell is 'agent orange'?
[–]Hitno 29 points30 points31 points 12 days ago
just yet another reason to dislike war, in this case the vietnam war. Chemical attacks by the US designed to kill the forests so the enemy was easier to spot from above, it just turned out it had some side effects to the human body
[–]GaBBBoSK 20 points21 points22 points 12 days ago
It also backfired and caused a lot of medical problems for the US soldiers, which is why my late grandfather ended up dying from heart complications. Seriously, fuck war.
[–]Midn1ghtwhisp3r 3 points4 points5 points 12 days ago
A friend of the family was actually exposed to this as well, He has these strange blueish vein-like strings visible in his arms that seem to grow over time, and climb like a vine, they look horrible, and he has had so many lung and heart problems from it.
Ah, that's terrible. Such horrible things happen in war.
[–]BraveSirRobin 4 points5 points6 points 12 days ago
There were also others designed to kill crops to starve the civilian population, which is evil incarnate before considering the side effects. A part of me suspects that the focus is always on Agent Orange to distract from this, like how we focus on waterboarding when other far worse techniques are commonplace.
[–]rushingfox -11 points-10 points-9 points 12 days ago
Yes because you only have to ask nicely for communism, fascism, and slavery to leave, you don't need a war at all.
[–]Meloku171 5 points6 points7 points 12 days ago
And because Murrikah feels the urge to become world's police, judge, jury and excecutioner. How are those "weapons of mass destruction" doing, mate?
[–]rushingfox -1 points0 points1 point 12 days ago
Well seeing as obama pulled us out and got a nobel peace prize for it, I have no idea what you are talking about.
[–]rhunex 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
We(the US) contain the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction, almost all of which are alive and well, and could be launched anywhere in the world at a moments notice.
At the same time, we use that overwhelming power to keep weaker countries in line, install governments that like us, and control global logistics(which, actually, is fascism, but no one can do anything about it...see point #1).
That's what he's talking about.
[–]rushingfox -3 points-2 points-1 points 12 days ago
Well not since obama has been signing the START: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/START_I
[–]titykaka 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
I think the people of Vietnam would have preferred communism to a raping of their country.
[–]Hitno -1 points0 points1 point 12 days ago
and when fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross and welcomed with open arms
[–]James_Bondage_007 2 points3 points4 points 12 days ago
You should definitely read a bit about it. It will put the potential of future chemical warfare in a very real perspective for you. ( I have to assume it was 'before your time', so learning the history of it may have an impact on your future thoughts about war)
[–]beatleforce1 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
Ah right. I'm only 14, just thought I'd say.
[–]James_Bondage_007 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
Well there's a lot of history out there, and a good chunk of it is boring as shit. Agent Orange is some fucked up stuff that will at least keep you interested.
[–]beatleforce1 2 points3 points4 points 11 days ago
Yeah seems pretty fucked up....
[–]pumpmar 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
also read the accounts of our POWs in vietnam, and other countries before bleeding your heart all over the enemy. our own past presidential candidate, mccain was a pow over there, so that would be a good place to start .
[–]charlieADAMS -3 points-2 points-1 points 12 days ago
If you're American and you don't know what that is you should be ashamed.
[–]beatleforce1 6 points7 points8 points 12 days ago
I'm British.
[–]SSSecret_Squirrel -13 points-12 points-11 points 12 days ago
It's sold to the public under the name 'Roundup.' Yup. People use it on their lawns every day. Farmers use it on their fields. Cancers, birth defects, sky-rocketing autism rates, massive honey bee die-off...
Monsanto is the world's biggest threat to our health and food supply.
[–]Skeeball_Fanatic 6 points7 points8 points 12 days ago*
I don't think that's true, but if you have any proof of that, I'd like to see it.
I did a bit of googling, and from what I have read, the US used defoliants beyween 62 and 71. Glyphosate, or Round Up, was not created until "in the 1970's", from wiki:
"Monsanto developed and patented the glyphosate molecule in the 1970s, and has marketed Roundup since 1973. It retained exclusive rights in the US until its US patent expired in September, 2000."
Also, Glyphosate is non-residual in soil. Agent Orange is very much residual.
[–]SSSecret_Squirrel 1 point2 points3 points 12 days ago
I think you are right there. My mistake. I guess I was unwittingly repeating an urban legend that is floating around these parts. However, the two chemicals do have a similar effect on humans. I will stand by that, and the fact that Monsanto is the biggest threat to our health and food supply.
No problem. I wasn't attacking you, more that I was very surprised that something like that could be true and was interested in seeing a source.
I appreciate your willingness to discuss it.
I'm not sure the effects of the two on humans are the same though. I'm sure large doses of glyphosate are no good for humans, but given that it is non residual I'd imagine in most cases exposure time is significantly less than what may really effect a person. But this is only speculation on my part, and I'm happy to concede I may be wrong.
Agent Orange remains so devastating because poor Vietnamese people have no choice but to work the same land for their food, so they'll continue to be exposed until such time as the substance is diluted enough to lose it's effect. And who knows how long that will take? It's a tragedy.
[–]DukeDownvote -7 points-6 points-5 points 12 days ago
Looks like we both fact-checked him/probably-her.
[–]DukeDownvote 2 points3 points4 points 12 days ago
The commercial product by Monsanto, "Roundup" is glyphosate: an aminophosphonic analogue of the natural amino acid glycine.
The chemical weapon provided to the US military by Monsanto, agent orange, is a 50:50 mixture of trichlorophenoxyacetic acid and dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Both of which are manufactured chemicals. The process of manufacturing dichlorophenoxyacetic acid will produce and thus contaminate the mixture with trace amounts of Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), which is a carcinogenic persistent organic pollutant with long-term effects on the environment.
Agent Orange is NOT Roundup.
[–]beatleforce1 2 points3 points4 points 12 days ago
Holy crap that's terrible... just why...
[–]afghanwhiggle 4 points5 points6 points 12 days ago
You're full of shit.
[–]Henipah -1 points0 points1 point 12 days ago
Glyphosphate, dioxin, same difference... ಠ_ಠ
[–]DukeDownvote 0 points1 point2 points 12 days ago
Oh also the GMO's developed by Monsanto have lead to a significant increase in food production and fed between millions to hundreds of millions of additional people on the planet. So for that reason, I'd beg to differ that Monsanto is a detriment to global health.
My personal stance on GMO's impact on the environmental world can be summarized by a quote from Raymond Ong: "For millenia, human beings have lived with animals. Humans domesticated the gray wolf fifteen thousand years ago. Today there are hundreds of distinct dog types, some of which are almost unrecognizable as wolves. The recent advances of biotechnology stem from a long tradition of selective breeding; they merely increase its precision. Rest assured, that I fully understand that radical technological advances often make us uneasy. But every new technology cannot be met with fear. It is true that we are playing with fire-- but this also defines us as humans; we play with fire and accept the consequences, because the alternative implies an unacceptable cowardice towards the unknown. We need to get over our unwillingness to change; we need to love the future again."
Edit: I accidentally some words.

Which makes it really funny that that moron Reagen tried to use it as a campaign song.
[–]bestbeforeMar91 10 points11 points12 points 12 days ago
Interesting this should be down voted, given that the war was started by the US Gov. lying about the Gulf of Tonkin, which then forced their youth by the draft to fight and die for a lie, and participate in relentless bombing for years and years of a country that never posed a threat to the sovereignty of the US.
[–]mendicantbias69 2 points3 points4 points 12 days ago
LBJ started a "military conflict" that cost 58,000 American lives and millions of Vietnamese, mostly civilian, over an incident that resulted in one bullet hole from small arms fire to an American warship.
I am a proponent of the just war theory, and in no way does this fall under jus ad bellum.

Scary shit.
