Manufacturers used to make their cartridge displays into art. I've always wanted one of these things, but the genuine antique ones are pretty expensive. For example, this, this, this and this.

[–]settoexplode 16 points17 points ago

those are actually pretty badass.

[–]BrickWiggles 7 points8 points ago

I've always found cartridges cool looking. When I was 8-9 moved into a new apartment found a tupperware thing of an assortment of bullets, so I took a 9mm and carried it around with me. Thinking back, it was probably a REALLY bad idea to take it with me to school.

[–]Weekend_Clock 6 points7 points ago

Not a bad idea, not a great idea. Unless you set off the primer, it would continue to be harmless.

[–]BrickWiggles 5 points6 points ago

No, not because of any danger, because being expelled would ruin my day.

[–]Weekend_Clock 3 points4 points ago

I suppose show and tell would be a problem with an 8/9 year old.

[–]ObamaCookies 0 points1 point ago

Not if they don't find out.........

[–]mwmwmwmwmmdw 2 points3 points ago

reminds me of that uk article where everyone freaked about because there was a .22 sitting on the floor of a shop and it talked about how it was PRIMED AND READY TO KILL

[–]theman838 2 points3 points ago

Reads like an Onion article (even the title).

http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/news/1013959.bullet_found_in_doorway/

[–]mwmwmwmwmmdw 2 points3 points ago

CAREFUL BOYS IT HAS BABY SEEKING TECHNOLOGY

i mean its a .22 SHORT for god sakes im Canadian and not even we are that stupid

[–]slickback503 3 points4 points ago

One day at school I realized I still had a shotgun shell in my pocket from hunting the previous day, I knew I wouldn't get caught with it or anything but knowing it was there just made think it would fall out and someone would over react and I'd get expelled or something.

[–]BrickWiggles 0 points1 point ago

I think I was too stupid at the time to know how stupid I was. I'm just glad nothing bad came of it.

[–]willcode4beer 0 points1 point ago

Back in my highschool days it was common for half the trucks in the school parking lot to have rifles in their back windows during hunting season.

[–]TheSaddestGrape 2 points3 points ago

And by the way, yes, that is Nobel of the Nobel Prizes, including the Nobel Peace Prize.

[–]Vault-tecPR 0 points1 point ago

What's the name of those really long .22 cartridges in the corners of the circular pattern in the first picture?

[–]Bradical123 1 point2 points ago

.22 WMR or .22 Magnum

[–]alvinm 1 point2 points ago

[–]ragnarokrobo 296 points297 points ago

Bullets in a gun store, WTF!! ...right.

[–]U731lvr 54 points55 points ago

$0.25 for brass 7.62x51mm rounds, that's a fucking steal.

[–]chaostheory6682 4 points5 points ago

Looks to me like someone figured out an entrepreneurial way to capitalize off of the zombie apocalype!

[–]alphawolf29 0 points1 point ago

....? they're less than 20c each here, and I don't really live in a cheap area for ammo.

[–]U731lvr 1 point2 points ago

Are you sure you aren't thinking of 7.62x39mm?

Best I can find for 7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester) is $0.38 for steel, $0.50 for brass.

[–]alphawolf29 0 points1 point ago

Sorry, you are correct. I was thinking of 7.62x54 and 7.62x39 not x51!

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points ago

Cartridges. :)

[–]kestert 32 points33 points ago

Probably both.

[–]bigsol81 4 points5 points ago

You know, technically there are bullets in that picture!

[–]Butthole_Scientist 3 points4 points ago

Ammo or rounds.

[–]mwmwmwmwmmdw 3 points4 points ago

hold on i need to go load casings into my clip

[–]Some1tookmyXBLGT -1 points0 points ago

Or rounds or ammunition. Bullets isn't the right term

[–]bigsol81 3 points4 points ago

While I understand what he means, I do indeed see some bullets in that picture.

[–]gta3uzi 21 points22 points ago

Alright! Here's my best guess. Starting bottom left and going clockwise:

.22lr .44mag 12-gauge 7.62x51 (NATO) .357mag

Edit: Upon suggestion, what was previously identified as 357 may be 10mm or have 10mm mixed in, which is a fairly rare round.

[–]potatoman96 1 point2 points ago

That looks about right.

[–]ThatBeardedCarGuy 1 point2 points ago

Those NATO rounds look so nice in there.

[–]EVILFISH2 1 point2 points ago

NATO rats.

[–]DoktorStrangelove 1 point2 points ago

I don't have a .44 so I'm not extremely familiar with them like I am with a few other cartridges, but the bottom right doesn't seem long enough to be .44. to me. Maybe .45? They even look 10mm-ish...maybe...

[–]gta3uzi 0 points1 point ago

Bottom right (above the word "Center") would be what I think is .357mag. The box with the pink label is what I think is .44mag.

[–]DoktorStrangelove 1 point2 points ago

Yeah I think you're right. There is definitely some .357/.38 in the bottom right, but there's also some assorted stuff in there that looks like Long Colt or 10mm as well...specifically I'm looking at the aluminum cased stuff that's bigger.

[–]gta3uzi 0 points1 point ago

I think this is what we're seeing. I can't recall ever seeing steel cased 357 in person. It was throwing me off at first. After further review I think you very well may be right about 10mm though.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v78/JRD77VET/Seneca%20Arms%20Co/DCP_3637A.jpg

[–]darkness0falls[S] 0 points1 point ago

thats right :)

[–]Cobol 193 points194 points ago

I don't see anything WTF about this.

[–]HankSleepy 63 points64 points ago

Agreed. Depending on where you are, this would be practical if anything.

I'm going to take a nap now.

[–]kestert 5 points6 points ago

Where would you be where buying individual cartridges from a candy dispenser would be more practical than buying a whole box?

[–]Sapphires13 23 points24 points ago

Except that the cartridges in these dispensers are not for sale. The sign says for display only. The mechanism is probably jammed to prevent people from actually putting money in and getting a cartridge. Owner found a cheap rack of candy dispensers, and decided it out be a cool way to show his product, while also being a little kitschy and decorative. Not WTF in the slightest.

[–]kestert 2 points3 points ago

You make some valid points that I will upvote and suggest that you should share with the OP rather than me, who doesn't really care and was just responding to comment I clicked reply to.

[–]special2plumsfor1 0 points1 point ago

Damn you for being so reasonable!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Gun range? And they wouldn't have to come out one at a time, either. No idea if that'd be legal, of course.

[–]theman838 0 points1 point ago

It would.

[–]cooltom2006 1 point2 points ago

living in the UK, just the thought of being able to go to a shop and buy a gun is WTF

[–]Oxycodone30mg 31 points32 points ago

It's kind of nice actually, except for a I live in California and its a tad bit harder to buy a gun.

[–]pizzlewizzle 41 points42 points ago

Living in the USA, the thought of NOT being able to do so is WTF. Fuck that.

[–]pinkeyedwookiee 3 points4 points ago

Exactly. Cultures all over the world are able to point to things in other cultures and go "that's obviously stupid". Case in point, the Japanese eat a pufferfish that can kill you if not prepared properly. Some people each year DO die. But they like it and its part of their culture, so who are we to say that it is stupid?

[–]Lothar_on_everyone 6 points7 points ago

We can still say it's stupid, nothing takes away our right of judgment.. You just have to keep in mind other cultures, and various such factors in relation to it when doing so.

[–]Freddie_AppsHero 3 points4 points ago

You just have to keep in mind other cultures, and various such factors in relation to it when doing so.

There is a line sometimes where you have to say "That thing you're doing is stupid and your culture is stupid for condoning it", though.

[–]hippie_hunter 2 points3 points ago

Guns are legal there...just ridiculously regulated.

[–]cooltom2006 3 points4 points ago

yes I know, which is why you don't just go into a shop and buy a gun. Also, although we are allowed to own guns we are not allowed to go outside and conceal them like you can in the USA.

[–]hippie_hunter 8 points9 points ago

You can in Northern Ireland.

[–]Helplessromantic 2 points3 points ago

You can't just walk into a store and walk out with a gun i don't think

EDIT3: Well now i gotta edit again, if you are about to downvote me, lemme know why, i wanna hear your opinion on the matter

[–]coaxfun 13 points14 points ago

Texan here. Walk in, 30 second background check, walk out with guns. I've got pretty much any type of weapon you can imagine. Favoring my 9mm AR ATM. Although, I've been spending quality time with my 1911 lately too.

[–]Butthole_Scientist 3 points4 points ago

9mm ARs are just ridiculously fun.

[–]coaxfun 0 points1 point ago

Honestly, not any more fun than .22 at the range, but they add utility should you need a firearm for protection. In my experience, only once though, pointing an AR at someone and telling them to stop gets a response that is larger than the caliber of the weapon that you're holding. That's with the ability to actually respond in a manner that is going to actually be effective should crazy get crazy.

[–]Butthole_Scientist 4 points5 points ago

I love 9mm in an AR, maybe its just me, though.

Question: Why are you not using .223/5.56 for home defense? .223 is probably one of the best rounds for home defense.

[–]Gildish_Chambino 1 point2 points ago

Listen to this guy. If you don't want bullets going through all your walls, of course.

[–]Butthole_Scientist 4 points5 points ago

9mm is going to penetrate walls a lot more than a 223 will. 223 will lose most of its energy once it hits walls and it starts tumbling and ripping apart. That is actually one of the major complains about 223 as a major military round. It works great for killing people, but it isn't a great penetrator.

[–]KisaruBandit 0 points1 point ago

Except class 3s, of course.

[–]coaxfun 1 point2 points ago

Sir, i have a class 3 permit. Those just sit in the safe though. They're funner showing to friends than actually shooting at the range. I'm an expert paper punch.

[–]Memitim 0 points1 point ago

Glorified G ;)

I love playing with guns but I also love that song.

[–]DogPencil 0 points1 point ago

The zombie apocalypse has started and you can only take one of your weapons. Which do you choose?

[–]coaxfun 0 points1 point ago

Hmm... I'd say my remington semi-auto shotty. I mean, if we're talking one shot brain splosions, that's your go-to weapon right there.

[–]undeadbill 1 point2 points ago

Gas piston pellet rifle. Quiet, effective, light ammo, and it doesn't ring the zombie dinner bell.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Depends on your state. I live in Iowa, and I have a permit to carry concealed weapons. With that, or with a permit to purchase, you can most certainly walk into a store and walk out with a handgun after doing some paperwork.

For long guns like rifles and shotguns, you don't even need a permit.

[–]Helplessromantic 1 point2 points ago

I kind of think the process of getting a permit counts

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Once you have your permit to carry, then for five years afterward, you may walk into a gun store and walk out with a handgun.

For long guns, you can do this at any time.

[–]Butthole_Scientist 5 points6 points ago

I can walk in and buy any gun I want in 5 minutes.

[–]starphish 2 points3 points ago

Can I at least get a reason for the downvoting?

The current reason you are getting downvoted is because you are complaining about downvotes. Suck-it-up. We all get downvoted. Take it, and move on.

[–]dawn-of-the-dan 1 point2 points ago

When I bought my Glock 40, I was in and out of the store in thirty minutes.

[–]Overlorddd 0 points1 point ago

They're all the way up to 40 now? Jesus...

[–]nmezib 0 points1 point ago

Yes you can, depending on the state. They do a quick background check here in PA and you can walk out with a firearm you just purchased.

[–]RobertTheSpruce 3 points4 points ago

This is what every European assumes American shops look like.

[–]a_can_of_solo 0 points1 point ago

IDK could the workings of the gumball machine accidently set off a round ? there's a lot of springs and pressure.

[–]willcode4beer 0 points1 point ago

unlikely. The primer is on the end.

[–]Cobol 0 points1 point ago

Not sure. I guess you'd have to try it and find out.

Would make buying ammo more exciting I suppose.

[–]hairyassandballs 17 points18 points ago

you should have took the "display only" note off for the pic so you could make more karma on a lie. the reddit way

[–]festyear 1 point2 points ago

Shame on you. The internet always knows. Now, maybe you should just go home for the night, commenter. ... ... Don't listen to your friend OP. Ever since his father left the house last year, he has been a little angry inside i think. There's nothing wrong with him, it just causes him to act out sometimes. Just remember that when you see him getting a bit mean or destructive.

[–]hairyassandballs 1 point2 points ago

I am sending my dad on a vacation to atlanta this weekend with my mom while I run his store. He usually works 365.

But you were kinda close.. good luck with your liberal arts degree, kid.

[–]i12burs 44 points45 points ago

I know it says display only... but I really want to put a quarter in and see how many I win!!

[–]Trinityofwar 37 points38 points ago

Real life Borderlands 2 ammo machine

[–]Mechanikore 19 points20 points ago

"Feeling overburdened by money?"

[–]FoxtrotBeta6 6 points7 points ago

I have two words for you: "NO REFUNDS!"

[–]PrimaryWalrus 1 point2 points ago

"Catch-a-GUN! Ugh. I'm never doing that again."

[–]lethargicwalrus 4 points5 points ago

It's not a game.

[–]lebowskisweater 51 points52 points ago

Today is the worst day ever in WTF.

Bullets are legal. Guns stores are legal. And there's a flipping sign that says "hey this is a joke!"

SO WTF, GUISE!

[–]kestert 15 points16 points ago

Maybe OP isn't American.

[–]Malphos101 7 points8 points ago

bullets are scary!

[–]mbrodge 7 points8 points ago

Anecdotal and no links, I know, but I once read a news article from a UK paper talking about a street being shut down and cordoned off while EOD was called in to handle an unexpended .22 round. The article went to great lengths stressing that the round was "fully capable of going off." I couldn't help but laugh. A busy street and shops being shut down, and EOD being called...for a single .22 bullet! I find at least five or six every single time I go to a range.

Tl;dr yup, some people think bullets are scary alright.

[–]theman838 2 points3 points ago

Holy balls that's funny.

In the US, some one would just pick it up and take it to either the trash or the range to shoot.

[–]sideburnsandmore 4 points5 points ago

I thought so too. I have a few rounds rattling around the console of my car, and at one point when I loading a couch into my vehicle a box of .22 fell out in a not so nice part of town at night, and I just left it spilt all over. A Brit would have thought WWIII was coming.

[–]mbrodge 0 points1 point ago

Oh man, THANK YOU for finding that! Not even a .22 magnum, or Long! A .22 short! My grandma used to carry a .22 short when she worked the late shift as a nurse. Literally, the smallest gun I own fires a larger round than that. Cabellas had a steel ammo can of .22 Long rifle on sale for less than $80 not long ago.

[–]Malphos101 2 points3 points ago

It's because of movies, people assume bullets are little explosions waiting to happen. It's really hard to accidentally set off the primer, and when you do it was probably because you were trying.

[–]Landstander19 2 points3 points ago

You said WTF twice in your comment.. the post does its job.

[–]673_points 1 point2 points ago

It may be the whole ammunition in a candy/gumball dispenser that the OP finds strange. Not the fact that gun stores and bullets exist, but the imagery itself.

[–]Benassi 7 points8 points ago

Fucking unsubscribing to r/WTF.

Fuck you OP. you're the fucking problem.

[–]iambecomedeath7 44 points45 points ago

That's actually pretty kick ass. Why is it in /r/wtf?

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points ago

Because some people think guns are scary.

[–]iambecomedeath7 23 points24 points ago

Usually, these are people who have never fired them. They're nothing to fear in and of themselves. They're merely tools. However, they are to be respected.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

I don't disagree with you.

[–]iambecomedeath7 5 points6 points ago

I was under no such assumption, though I can see how you might think I was.

[–]Vault-tecPR 2 points3 points ago

Being long-range tools designed explicitly for killing (no judgement or knee-jerk fear right here, just a statement of fact), I think they deserve a higher level of awareness and understanding than a pipe wrench or a table saw.

[–]willcode4beer 0 points1 point ago

designed explicitly for killing

I love the narrowmindedness. Try watching something other than Fox News and open your mind.

Many firearms are designed for killing. Some firearms are designed explicitly for target shooting; not unlike a bow and arrow. Firearms are even used in the Olympics.

[–]Vault-tecPR 0 points1 point ago

I am aware of the other less-common uses that firearms can serve, but they were invented for killing and are used by most owners for the very same thing. Myself, I use air rifles to kill pests and I've got a license application pending so I can get a Remington 870 and make use of the roving hordes of wild turkeys in my area. Please don't make unsubstantiated assumptions about people - I don't watch any of the major news channels.

[–]Psirocking -1 points0 points ago

not on reddit.

[–]Caleb_mac11 15 points16 points ago

This is not wtf material

[–]aahdin 4 points5 points ago

merica lolol amirite?

Europe is so much better they don't have le guns and fundie racist conservative bullet buyers.

[–]Cosmic_Spud 3 points4 points ago

I fail to see why this is WTF. Looks more like /r/awesome material to me. Also, it would probably get alot of karma on /r/libertarian, /r/voluntaryism, /r/anarcho-captialism, and /r/anarchism.

[–]groovemonkey 2 points3 points ago

God I really wanna shake that thing

[–]swissfire 2 points3 points ago

More like Why The Fuck aren't these everywhere.

Brilliant.

[–]Odkin 1 point2 points ago

If videogames have taught me anything, it's that there should be another one nearby that dispenses medicine.

[–]heavy_metal_flautist 1 point2 points ago

And possibly another that dispenses explosives.

[–]iceevil 6 points7 points ago

When the zombie apocalypse comes you will love these!

[–]hippie_hunter 3 points4 points ago

Bullshit, it doesn't accept bottlecaps.

[–]Vault-tecPR 4 points5 points ago

[–]sirJ69 -1 points0 points ago

In Soviet Russia bullets flow like candy from machines. 25 cents for handful.

[–]MillzJr 0 points1 point ago

At the store where I work they have guns/ammo on display 5 feet away from diapers and baby stuff. In Canada this isn't really surprising, at least where I live.

[–]BIG_CARL_ 1 point2 points ago

Welcome to Marcus Munitions!

[–]Papa_Kross 1 point2 points ago

Awesome!!!

[–]biggmac24 0 points1 point ago

[–]jgalena 0 points1 point ago

I was disappointed by the display only sign.

[–]PenisFlyTrap 0 points1 point ago

I'm okay with reposts. Sure, they're a little annoying, but they don't harm people who haven't seem the content before.

What I fucking hate is when people claim that they created/came across it.

Fair enough, you didn't say that you didn't come across it on the Internet and not IRL, but I think it's implied.
