Yeah, seriously. I've been a rat owner for years, and I have 5 right now. I would never own any other pet. They are very affectionate and absolutely love to play, cuddle, and exchange groomings. It's hilarious how excited they get playing with people; they sprint all over the place bouncing and twitching like crack-fiends. It sounds odd but it's adorable. They form very personal relationships with people, nothing like other rodents, more like a dog or a cat. I highly recommend rats as pets.

As a former rat owner, I'd say they are more affectionate than your average cat, not all cats, but an average cat. But because of that, the thing I can't handle is their short lifespan and their tendency to die in horrible ways such as respiratory failure, seizures, it's just heartbreaking to watch.

That said I still recommend them too, and look forward to the invention of a genetically engineered super rat that lives longer to replace all the dumb bitey uncaring hamsters in this world :P

we had pet rats when i was a kid and i have such lovely memories of how sweet, social, smart, affectionate they were. and then there are the memories of how attached you get to this little thing that's going to die in a couple of years.

Skug is the Lenape Indian word for squirrel. Franklin wrote the poem for his niece when her pet squirrel died.

I have a Japanese Black Hooded rat - she and her sister (who died in March) were taught to play basketball for the science center where I used to work. Rats are the best.
