Not to be that guy, but the reason chocolate can be fatal to dogs is because of the caffeine.

[–]facthanshotfirst 7 points8 points ago

I think the dog is just chewing on the straw. But yes we should all be aware what is fatal to dogs. Hopefully this puppy didn't have any of that drink.

[–]aamatos[S] 8 points9 points ago

He didn't have any just chewed on the straw lol

[–]SaltyBabe 2 points3 points ago

People are so retarded, like that dog would be able to even USE a straw...

Actually, it isn't the caffeine. While it is in there and is a problem, theobromine is the real danger.

However you are correct that caffeine is (in large enough quantities) lethal to dogs and other household animals (such as cats, fish, etc...).

Edit: I see you already found that particular bit of info out, sorry for saying it again. But you were not completely wrong!

One year, after Easter, my dog got into my siblings candy and ate three solid chocolate bunnies. Didn't do a damn thing. Possibly made him stronger...

[–]Kellianne 2 points3 points ago

It takes more chocolate than you'd think to make a dog sick. I called the emergency vet once when My dog ate two king size candy bars. they told me if it was less than 1 oz. of chocolate per 1 lb of dog it would be okay. As my dog weighed 85 lbs. I figured he was okay. It was milk chocolate by the way.

[–]GreanEcsitSine 2 points3 points ago

Our last dog had eaten all the candy in my Easter basket one year when I was a kid. The basket consisted of 1 solid chocolate bunny, around 1 dozen peanut butter chocolate mini eggs, a few dozen jelly beans, & a half dozen mini chocolate bars.

Mom freaked out, called our vet, and it turned out since it was very cheap chocolate, that she would be fine because there wasn't enough chocolate in anything to actually harm her. In fact, the real risk was all the foil and plastic grass she ate.

Considering how much stupid shit that dog did, I'm amazed she lived to be 16 years old.

Looks like I was only partially right... it's the theobromine, more prevalent in dark chocolate. Bunnies are usually milk chocolate (and corn syrup). I'd guess sensitivity is kind of like an allergy, just like we're all allergic to cat dander, but some people lose their shit around cats and others barely notice.

[–]AustinTreeLover 1 point2 points ago

According to my vet, theobromine builds up in the animal's body. And you're right, dark chocolate is more dangerous. But, a pet can eat some chocolate and be okay, then, later, eat more and get sick.

Edit: Looked it up Basically, it looks like we metabolize theobromine in like 5 hours, whereas in a dog it takes about a day.

[–]mwagner26 -1 points0 points ago

My first dog did that. The vet said he didn't have much longer. That fucker lived like another 5 years.

[–]fancytalk 0 points1 point ago

My cousins' dog got into their easter baskets one year. She didn't die but she shat EVERYWHERE. She was pretty allergy prone so maybe that was a factor.

[–]AustinTreeLover 0 points1 point ago

Dark chocolate is more dangerous, but even milk chocolate is dangerous. My vet told me that it builds up in their bodies over time. So, the dog can eat some chocolate at one point and later each much less and get sick.

Edit: Looked it up. I had it a little wrong, it looks like. Basically, we metabolize theobromine (the potentially dangerous ingredient) in around five hours. Whereas the dog takes nearly a day to process it.

[–]SaltyBabe 0 points1 point ago

Before I read your edit I said out loud "Time for a new vet!" cause that is indeed incorrect.

[–]AnimalKingTurret 3 points4 points ago

It's OK, dogs can't use straws (don't tell the puppy).

[–]Kellianne -1 points0 points ago

Was just going to say that caffeine is lethal to dogs! I'm sure OP just took the pic and then took it away though.

[–]SaltyBabe 0 points1 point ago

So are onions if they eat a very large amount, but do you not give your dog a table scrap if it was cooked with some onion?

[–]logger_v21 1 point2 points ago

Dont take this as the complete truth, but I dont think dogs can create suction due to the shape of their mouth.

[–]hikemhigh 0 points1 point ago

Pretttyyy sure you're thinking of razor blades

[–]Alliosaurus 4 points5 points ago

I used to take my golden to starbucks frequently. I'd get him some water and some scone crumbs or something if we were lucky, and tie his leash to the metal outdoor chair I sat in.

One time he lost a scone bit out of his reach. I stood up to get it for him. At the same time, he lunged for it. Without my weight in the chair, it lunged with him, and this scared the shit out of my poor, dopey Ozzy. So he took off across the parking lot, dragging this chair all like "It's chasing me!!! Nooooo!" Lucky I caught and calmed him before he damaged anyone's car or got hurt!!!

So yeah this is way cuter than my dog/starbucks experience.

[–]hr0nk 0 points1 point ago

That is adorable, but scary.

[–]SimonRivero 1 point2 points ago

[–]green_eyes 2 points3 points ago

Man. I've lost so many straws that way. We need more pictures like this to raise awareness. Straw Strong.

[–]letmewalkyouout 4 points5 points ago

That a person likely put his or her mouth on that straw after the dog did is excessively horrifying to me.

[–]SaltyBabe 0 points1 point ago

GOD FORBID!

[–]atomic_crystlstrctre 2 points3 points ago

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!

[–]thesaxmaster 0 points1 point ago

So did you drink it!

[–]Absolute_ali 1 point2 points ago

Is that a min pin?

[–]Kysis 0 points1 point ago

More likely a Toy Manchester Terrier.

[–]shojohime 0 points1 point ago

Docked tail, coloring, and a perhaps intact ears. I would think so.

[–]Conner14 -1 points0 points ago

Surprised that starbucks cup isn't instagram'd

[–]Paisley_Alpaca 0 points1 point ago

I think puppies like to nom straws more than drink coffee... Is a dog even capable of using a straw?

[–]SaltyBabe 0 points1 point ago

No, they aren't. I think even if a dog could physically suck a straw, which it probably could, even this young, I SERIOUSLY doubt it's ability to think of doing that. It's a very unnatural thing to think of.

[–]basicbreakfast 1 point2 points ago

You seemed to have wasted $3.25.

[–]SaltyBabe 0 points1 point ago

Why?

[–]katemalate 1 point2 points ago

oh nooooo! tiny hyper dog + caffeine = recipe for disaster

[–]AustinTreeLover 1 point2 points ago

I have a JRT and I left a hot Starbucks latte in the cup holder and got out to pump gas. I returned to find his little head completely in the cup. He drank a tall latte in like five minutes.

A JRT on a caffeine high is something to see.

[–]jacb -1 points0 points ago

Terrible. Period.

[–]iamjamin 0 points1 point ago

dawww a mini pinscher

[–]come_on_seth 0 points1 point ago

They lick their own ass too.

[–]SaltyBabe 0 points1 point ago

Really? Mine dosen't, sometimes she chews the tops of her front paws but she never "Cleans herself" and yeah, I'm with her pretty much 24/7.

[–]MRAPdriver88m 0 points1 point ago
