I'm pretty new too, and I still don't get it. You can't use it for anything, you don't buy neat-o user customizations, it isn't displayed next to your user name when you post so people know if they're reading something from someone who is highly regarded, it just... sits there. Doing nothing.

If what you're posting is supposed to be funny and people upvote it, it's like "alright, that's cool, internet people think I'm funny." If you're posting an opinion then I guess it's a way to know that the largeley liberal, typical college student, PC (except in regards to women, muslims, or fat people) redditor population agrees with what you're saying, which honestly isn't really that great...

To me, karma isn't about getting a high score. When I make a comment, I want people to respond to it, even if they don't agree. I want to read what other people are thinking. To do this, your comment has to be visible. And how does a comment became visible? It gets upvoted.

I liked reddit a lot more when it was about content and not "clever" remarks and pictures. Repost after repost and judgemental/condescending statements made behind a computer screen to satisfy karma hunger.

That being said I can relate strongly to karma hunters, reddit is a system and this system has it's own reward system. Playing a video game in single player is not much different from this multi-player paste bin. There is still great content on this website and since this change became complete reddit is doing a lot more for the communities out there than before in straight up practical means.

When I start feeling hungry for karma I just make a new account because this is one addiction I do not want to be a part of :D

Note: I am talking about reddits front and not the whole of it.

Here's what I think of karma:

Niggers niggers niggers. Christians and Republicans are alright. There isn't enough evidence for climate change to make any big decisions. Weed should be illegal. You, as a person, who is reading this, are probably generally immoral but think too highly of yourself.

Standardized testing is very efficient. Gays should man up and stop bitching about what other people think of them. A random Senator/Congressman/big Politician is probably smarter than you, and is caring and motivated enough to actually try to fix the problems in the world.

Being classy is overrated, it's just the post-highschool version of 'cool'.
