Upvotes for Doc Martin!

[–]Tokugawa 15 points16 points ago

"Port Wen? More like 'Port Why', am I right?"

[–]TheCaptainSam 9 points10 points ago

I went there once and the house (pretty small) that they use for Doc Martin's house was for sale for over a million. And there were loads of people outside taking photos ect. It would be a pretty cool idea to own 'Doc Martin's house' but for that much and to constantly have people outside.

[–]stupid_name 3 points4 points ago

Wow. Is this there? Or that there? I thought it looked familiar immediately.

[–]Flytch 4 points5 points ago

I went there last summer and saw them filming Doc Martin. It was a scene in the cafe that overlooks the harbour, some guy was shouting at another guy.

[–]darthcarnate 14 points15 points ago

Disappointed at how few people make the Doc Martin connection :(

[–]layendecker 14 points15 points ago

The Reddit demographic is not exactly the target market for middle of the road ITV Dramas.

[–]30thCenturyMan 5 points6 points ago

I didn't know what Doc Martin was until my 87 year old grandma introduced me to it.

[–]colspace 0 points1 point ago

It's on PBS in the United States, my mom adores it.

[–]LookAtLeo 4 points5 points ago

Yay Doc Martin!

[–]grumps_the_penguin 1 point2 points ago

Come through!

[–]s33k 0 points1 point ago

Just started watching these on Netflix. They're wonderful.

[–]Tzios 55 points56 points ago

Clearly photoshopped, it's never that sunny here.

[–]alexgmcm 25 points26 points ago

Indeed - the first time British kids learn about the Sun is in science class.

[–]Jaccington 9 points10 points ago

The Welsh don't even get to learn about it, their government abhors it. We're quite lucky when you think about it.

[–]alexgmcm 3 points4 points ago

[–]MacGyver1 0 points1 point ago

Ahhh you beat me to it (although I'm not from there).

[–]TdashTill[!] 12 points13 points ago

This looks like a Settlers of Catan game board.

[–]futuramadog 128 points129 points ago

[–]MovieFlask 39 points40 points ago

Just one more turn!

[–]FUCKING_EVERYTHING 23 points24 points ago

Subtle, I like it.

[–]w00tbear 0 points1 point ago

What did he change?

[–]Turtlecupcakes 34 points35 points ago

I don't think he specifically changed it, just reposted.

If you look closely, there's a pyramid and stonehenge, and a temple, and some other wonders. Basically making a joke at the fact that this looks an awful lot like Civilization 5.

http://www.gamecrashers.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/civV_city1.jpg

[–]vbenv 1 point2 points ago

That's not a temple, it's a Taj Mahal.

[–]ChickenBiscuitSwag 4 points5 points ago

I spy a pyramid.

[–]w00tbear 1 point2 points ago

Oh. Wow.

[–]markpelly 0 points1 point ago

Also a temple.

[–]PortalGunFun -1 points0 points ago

Taj Mahal.

[–]shalom-john 21 points22 points ago

A repost within a repost, what do we call that?

[–]Anaklusmos 8 points9 points ago

A thread

[–]FrostyJesus 0 points1 point ago

Repostception

[–]drfunkenstien014 2 points3 points ago

Yay im not the only one.

[–]wiggle987 1 point2 points ago

Reddit needs a dedicated subtle reference to civilization gimmick account, I always feel proud of myself when i get the reference.

[–]2bananasforbreakfast 0 points1 point ago

Deja vu

[–]Naeddyr 18 points19 points ago

I've seen maybe two or three episodes of Doc Martin, yet I guessed (right) that it must have been shot there.

[–]jderm1 6 points7 points ago

Fun fact: There's a sign on the house used for the surgery saying the interior shots weren't actually filmed there and to please respect the owner's privacy.

[–]Tokugawa 4 points5 points ago

Fun fact 2: Martin Clunes, who plays the titular Doc Martin, also does the voice of Kipper.

[–]Melvin_the_cat 1 point2 points ago

I hovered over the link and it says 'Thanks for naming the Scotty Dog 'Tiger', btw. Way to fuck up the animal names for my 2 year-old.' Did you put that in? If so you have made my day

[–]Pfhred 24 points25 points ago

Shit be picturesque yo.

[–]DubiumGuy 9 points10 points ago

Cornwall is fucking lush. My favourite part of my native country.

[–]satchoo 0 points1 point ago

Just left after 3 years. I do miss it.

[–]Jesusthecarpenter 0 points1 point ago

That's awesome...

at 1:30 was that roman shit?

The only thing I knew about cornwall before today was t that their cat's have thumbs and they will put anything in to a pasty.

Then I saw your username. Well played.

[–]SirZerty 2 points3 points ago

It's amazing people still think this is a picture xD

[–]MrCobaltBlue 2 points3 points ago

[–]el_Vercoe 5 points6 points ago

CORNWALL, WOO!

[–]kipkiller5 2 points3 points ago

Kernow bus vyken!

[–]levilarrington 17 points18 points ago

I suffer from being an American and I have to admit any time I see pictures like this of England I'm always blown away that what seems like such a small country could still have that much green left given a major population.

[–]CopperHarmonica 44 points45 points ago

This is one of my favourite pics of rural England.

The fact is that while there is a lot of green in the country there is virtually no point where you are more than an hours walk from a built up area.

It makes walking across the national parks a lot more fun though. By lunch you will find a pub to eat at, by dinner you will encounter another and you can finish the evening with a few pints of ale by the fire in a third pub. Not like in America where you can start walking into a national park and be dead before you see another person.

[–]Rasta_mouse 15 points16 points ago

That may be true for England, whereas the Scottish Highlands are pretty empty. I'm sure thats pretty similar for N. Ireland and Wales.

[–]shinygreenbean 4 points5 points ago

I have to say that American national parks have awesome toilets. We did a kind of mini road trip round California a couple of years ago; cleaned, serviced toilets with disposable paper seat covers and plenty of bog roll that you don't even see in England just everywhere. There wasn't a car park without a toilet either; the whole toilet anxiety for the entire trip just didn't exist.

[–]xbattlestation 1 point2 points ago

Its funny - public toilets in the UK are the worst I've ever seen. I now live in Australia, and I have to say I no longer fear needing a 'toilet experience' while out in public, there will be a clean public porcelin throne close by.

I remember going to a pub in Camden in London, and the entire bathroom was under about an inch of piss. And yet it was still being used. Crazy.

[–]whodewho 2 points3 points ago

The ability to zoom in was amazing. Do you know where I can find other images like that?

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points ago

The image was from the Wikipedia page for the Lake District.

So maybe try other Wikipedia pages. That same page has some other nice images too.

[–]Wisey 0 points1 point ago

For anyone that wishes to know that is Derwent Water in the Lake District. To the right of the lake is the town Keswick, behind that is Skiddaw (the fell/mountain). Behind the lake to the left of picture is Cat Bells, the most climbed fell (small mountain/big hill) in the Lake District. In the distance you can see Bassenthwaite Lake and right in the distance you can actually see Scotland. Lovely place.

[–]behavedave 1 point2 points ago

[–]dr__feelgood 0 points1 point ago

Derwent Water! I've had many good times sailing there, my friend has a cabin on the shore.

[–]auto98 0 points1 point ago

There was a report not so long ago that said we are 8% urban, but when you include the greenery in urban areas only about 5% of the country could be said to be built on.

[–]F_A_F 8 points9 points ago

You won't find a major population in a county like Cornwall, where Port Isaac is. Average house price for a detached home is $474,890. Average salary in the county is $33,970; so around 14 years salary to buy a home.

House prices: http://www.home.co.uk/guides/sold_house_prices.htm?county=cornwall&month=07&year=2012

Salaries: http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=18151

[–]ohreilly 4 points5 points ago

Doesn't stop the usual "developers" building shitty flimsy "homes" on every piece of greenery they can grab - and charging the earth for the privilege.

I'm in Cornwall and my small village has had extensive "development" in the last few years.

[–]F_A_F 1 point2 points ago

The villages, on the whole, don't need any more building. As you say, it is mostly poor quality homes but still at sky high prices. Truro needs more homes, but the houses round Treliske are like rabbit hutches. The new Newquay development looks good, but Newquay doesn't need more homes it needs more jobs.

I don't have an issue with new homes per se, but they need to be government funded social housing in outlying areas near places like Padstow, Port Isaac, Mylor, Budock...servicing the long standing village communities instead of wealthy second homes. I really don't have an issue with second home owners as such as they bring much needed currency to Cornwall. But to create wealthy retirement villages like Rock and Devoran doesn't make Cornwall very vibrant and exciting at all.

[–]deltarob 0 points1 point ago

as long as Bude stays how it is I'm happy

[–]mint-bint 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that is because of those bloody London types coming down, with their balls all shiny, buying up our houses!

[–]PiratePegLeg 6 points7 points ago

This article might interest you, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18623096 (sorry about the messy link, on my phone).

The jist of it is if you take into account gardens, parks etc in the UK, only 2.27% of land is actually built upon. Even not taking that into account, England, which is the most built up is still only built up on 10% of the land.

[–]idintal 3 points4 points ago

Except of course, pretty much none of the non built up land is actually wild. It's all been deforested to make way for farmland. There are very few spots of land in the UK that haven't been visibly altered for human use.

[–]PiratePegLeg 0 points1 point ago

Oh yea definitely. I would love to see what portion of our green shit is actually farmland compared to say national parks. It still blows my mind though how little concrete there is on the ground considering our population, I don't think our houses are that small D:

[–]bummer69a 0 points1 point ago

Exact article I thought of!

[–]tenkadaiichi 0 points1 point ago

Try Japan as well. Seriously. It's so gorgeous out in the countryside, and there's so MUCH of it, too!

However, almost nobody that lives out in the aforementioned countryside speaks English, so it's not a useful place for foreigners.

[–]_12 0 points1 point ago

It's not like what is pictured is a natural landscape untouched and unused by humans. All of that green seems to be agricultural fields, a landscape that is needed to sustain its relatively high population density.

[–]levilarrington 0 points1 point ago

[–]FMERCURY 4 points5 points ago

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,

This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,

This other Eden, demi-paradise,

This fortress built by Nature for herself

Against infection and the hand of war,

This happy breed of men, this little world,

This precious stone set in the silver sea,

Which serves it in the office of a wall

Or as a moat defensive to a house,

Against the envy of less happier lands,

This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

[–]AdequateSubject 3 points4 points ago

I'm imagining a classic British sitcom kind of scenario in this town, where all the townspeople are obnoxiously cheerful and friendly. Except for one guy living in that lone house on the hill on the right side of the bay, who everybody in town refers to as "Grumpy Old Edward".

[–]sickoldman123 12 points13 points ago

Not sure if this is a joke.. But Doc Martin is filmed here. A comedy-drama TV series. But instead of everyone being cheerful, they're all ridiculously ill and thick as shit! You should definitely check it out if you like British humour.

[–]wiggle987 0 points1 point ago

I feel a more League of Gentlemen vibe from it.

[–]deepobedience 3 points4 points ago

So British. Miles of space all around: Still build terraced houses.

[–]pacman983 7 points8 points ago

Spent a wonderful week in this town with friends of the family while the filmed "Doc Martin". What an amazing place.

[–]Catch--22 2 points3 points ago

I love the patchwork-quilt look of English landscapes. Cornwall, Lake District, The Dales, and the South Downs being my favourites.

[–]LT_Sealice 2 points3 points ago

This looks like the town from Doc Martin.

[–]DatBanana1 2 points3 points ago

It is :) ive stood outside where Dr Martin lives in the series

[–]LT_Sealice 1 point2 points ago

Extremely random since I'm American, but I'm actually a big fan of the show. Some of my rugby friends got me into it years ago.

[–]tiltedsun 2 points3 points ago

As seen in the show Doc Martin, only they jus show the very downtown, local bits near the harbor. I would very much like to go there one day. Other shows have been shot there as well, I'm told?

[–]Yogpod 2 points3 points ago

Looks like Civilization 5

[–]sbtrkt 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful place, was there in Feb this year.

[–]musicalmaniac 1 point2 points ago

Doc Martin?

[–]sickoldman123 1 point2 points ago

Yep. But they call it Port Wenn

[–]ctmay 0 points1 point ago

I would imagine it's impossible to get a ball to stay stationary anywhere in that area.

[–]Ebers 1 point2 points ago

A green and pleasant land, indeed.

[–]Christian_Bennett 1 point2 points ago

I think everyone means Civ V looks like Port Isaac...

[–]susarejap 0 points1 point ago

How much does a house or apartment cost there? I want to buy one!

[–]JinxThunderball 0 points1 point ago

Wow, opened that bitch up in google streetview, some serious tide going on there.

[–]deltarob 1 point2 points ago

it's a REALLY fast tide, don't park in the harbour carpark past 4pm or your car will be fucked

[–]KhabaLox 0 points1 point ago

For some reason I read this as "Poor Isaac, England" and thought, "Why? What's wrong with it? It looks pretty nice to me."

[–]hazbek 0 points1 point ago

[–]enginedriver 0 points1 point ago

There are lots of isaacs in Cornwall, Devon and south Wales. We're the coolest or so my mum tells me

[–]jds30 0 points1 point ago

Awesome! And the natural curvature of the landscape allows for the drunk's piss to run into the ocean. Doesn't make for a good beach destination though.

[–]shinygreenbean 0 points1 point ago

Harlyn Bay is not far away, it's one of the best beaches in England.

[–]ceruleanpineapple 0 points1 point ago

Don't know why, but the closest bit of land there reminds me of a cheeseburger.

[–]blAke139 0 points1 point ago

This is so over-saturated, I love it!

[–]Meanest_Phlebotomist 1 point2 points ago

One thing that's always struck me about England is that, despite everything being very green, there are so very few trees. I guess that's what a thousand years of civilization does.

[–]InadvertentOxymormon 1 point2 points ago

The island was completely covered in forest before the land was developed for agriculture.
