    Centipedes are actually venomous and can be dangerous, so you should be careful! Though millipedes are non-venomous, and safe as pets, they are plant eaters so probably won't help you out with the pest species. :(

                            It's definitely not a rational fear - at least for me.

                            When I'm sitting here in the relative safety of a comfy chair in front of a computer screen, I can objectively say that spiders are pretty awesome. They eat pests, they generally stay out of my business, and the ones where I live mean absolutely no harm to me.

                            But when I actually see one skittering around near me, all of that rational respect goes out the window. It's something primal - I lock up. It's something about the legs, and the speed relative to its size. At the same time, though, I'm not creeped out by things with more legs (centipedes) or faster relative movement (mice/cockroaches). I dunno. It's just spiders, man.

                            I think it might also have something to do with the fact that spiders are non-mammals, but have a high degree of autonomy, awareness, and perceived intelligence. They hunt. They build homes. They encroach on your territory. But they're not doing it to serve a hive/brood/whatever. They're doing it for themselves. They are their own animal, but they're not mammalian, so it's very difficult to find any sort of common ground with them. When I see a mouse scutter across a room, I think "awwww, the poor thing's probably hungry." When I see a spider do the exact same thing, I feel zero empathy for it.

                            And unlike snakes and lizards, which meet all those same criteria, spiders have very tiny and obscure facial features, which makes it very difficult to anthropomorphize them.
