Paraffin only burns when it is vaporized. When you light a candle, the match vaporizes some wax in the wick which then combusts and starts the cycle. When you snuff the flame, you see unburned vapor that is flammable.

[–]Decaf_Engineer 69 points70 points ago

This is a closeup shot of candle smoke. You can see that the smoke is actually wax droplets.

[–]habitats 33 points34 points ago

This seems like a thing one wouldn't inhale.

[–]Seantzor 26 points27 points ago

But it smells so good

[–]mickey_kneecaps 3 points4 points ago

Don't breath this!

[–]chaynes 0 points1 point ago

Does it blend?

[–]that_guy 4 points5 points ago

Fuckin' A! I've got to try taking a picture like that now... wish me luck in not getting wax all over my lens.

[–]KountChocula 90 points91 points ago

Thanks for that concise explanation.

[–]jeffAA 127 points128 points ago

Thanks for the cereal.

[–]KountChocula 0 points1 point ago

You're very welcome.

[–]Kubaker1 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for all the fish.

[–]Cordtus 24 points25 points ago

This is also why you don't put multiple candles very close to each other. They can heat the wax up so much that the entire pool of wax starts on fire.

[–]amcrastinator 53 points54 points ago

sounds cool, brb.

[–]me_me_me_me_me_ 9 points10 points ago

I see firetrucks at amcrastinator's house!

[–]FlailStorm 23 points24 points ago

You can use this to your advantage though. Back when I lived outside I'd make what we call squat candles. The best version is taking corrugated cardboard and spiraling it into a tuna can, then soaking the cardboard with melted wax. When you later light the cardboard you can easily boil water on the flame provided, and it puts off decent heat and light. The shittiest squat candle I ever saw was a metal plate with a pile of cigarette butts covered in bunch of wax. Still worked. I actually still have a habit of saving all the wax scraps from candles because of this. You can make great fire starters with wax and cardboard too.

[–]andersonmatt1125 0 points1 point ago

Or throw them into a bonfire. It'll look like you just doused it in gasoline.

[–]FlailStorm 2 points3 points ago

Meh, I prefer compact efficient fires personally. You can make a starter out of a bit of corrugated cardboard soaked in wax that will burn long enough to get a fire going.

[–]mumrah 1 point2 points ago

And when it happens in a glass jar candle, you can easily crack/shatter the glass. Also, it typically will scorch whatever it's sitting on - oh, or your hand.

[–]Lord_Of_Her_Piece 1 point2 points ago

how many do you think is needed to do this? wouldn't the candles have to be relatively short too? i.e. have the flame close enough to the pool of melted wax?

[–]Cordtus 5 points6 points ago

I've had it happen with 3 tea lites. The first time however I decided it would be cool to fill an entire 3' diameter circular steel table with tea lites and light them all at once.

Within about 10 minutes the entire thing was a massive uncontrollable blaze. Had to just throw a sheet of cardboard over it to snuff it out and even then the amount of wax fumes coming off of it was insane.

[–]Brocktoon_in_a_jar 0 points1 point ago

I think that's how my friend burned his house down with a Yankee candle.

[–]awesomemanftw 0 points1 point ago

this has happened to me.

[–]nbshark 12 points13 points ago

Came here to learn this. Thanks!

[–]kristianur 6 points7 points ago

Everything only burns when it's vaporized. The prosess of vaporizing solids and liquids is called pyrolysis, and requires heat.

Also most fires don't burn their fuel completely so there's still flammable gasses in the smoke. these gasses can ignite if the temperature gets high enough or they find a source of ignition.
This is what happens in a flash fire or backdraft.

[–]Heliophobe 4 points5 points ago

Slightly relevant:
For anyone else wondering, this is how most things that can burn work.
For example, when you burn wood you aren't actually burning the wood itself, you are burning the vapors (oxygen and hydrogen mostly) that come out of the wood breaking down.
And there is also gasoline. Liquid gasoline does not burn. You can try all you want to burn liquid gasoline and it will not catch. Why? Because you need a certain mix of gasoline vapors and oxygen. Too much or too little of either won't work.

[–]Dvorak_01 2 points3 points ago

You can try all you want to burn liquid gasoline and it will not catch.

I'm not doubting the science, but you probably just killed a few people.

[–]cefriano 2 points3 points ago

Especially since tossing a match on liquid gasoline WILL cause it to burn, because gasoline is so volatile that it doesn't need much heat at all to start evaporating, so there is likely quite a bit of ignitable vapor just hanging over the liquid. DO NOT TRY TO BURN LIQUID GASOLINE. SHIT WILL STILL CATCH ON FIRE.

[–]catechizer 0 points1 point ago

If you really get an urge to try it though, your best bet is to use a small amount (1/2 cup) and drop a match in it while it is well below freezing outside; this helps ensure the liquid does not evaporate.

[–]andersonmatt1125 1 point2 points ago

Wood does not release oxygen and then burn it when heated. If it did, it wouldn't need atmospheric oxygen in order to keep itself going, which is obviously required.

I'd agree that there are flammable vapor compounds that do light on fire, I'm just saying it's not hydrogen and oxygen.

[–]TheJack38 4 points5 points ago

So when we smell that distinct smell when we snuff a candle, it's actually vapourized wax?

[–]Aiyon 2 points3 points ago

Also a tiny bit of what makes the wick catch.

[–]Pumpernickell 1 point2 points ago

Solid science!

[–]eninety2 0 points1 point ago

Now tell me why the fuck I stared at that video for such a long time.

[–]ToxicMonkeys 0 points1 point ago

So that's why I just wasted a box of matches trying to reignite them.

[–]AnalBumCovers 1 point2 points ago

This is how brush fires can jump highways, is it not?

[–]nycsportster 2 points3 points ago

No that's radiant heat

[–]GuitarGuru253 0 points1 point ago

Everything only burns when it's vaporized

[–]turkfeberrary 0 points1 point ago

As I understand it, almost anything only burns when it's vaporized. Heating breaks down the material in a process called pyrolosis and causes vapors or gasses to be released. Smoke is only unburned fuel. If smoke is hot enough it can reignite with the introduction of oxygen (like you'd see in a backdraft on a structure fire), or you can reignite smoke with a flame.

[–]Pzazz 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for making another repost worth the inspection!

[–]adish 197 points198 points ago

thanks for not making this another shitty TIL

[–]ym_loves_me 65 points66 points ago

Give it an hour or two...

[–]kcell 57 points58 points ago

I will post this in a month or so to TIL.

[–]ElMandrake 26 points27 points ago

[–]Hremsfeld[S] 3 points4 points ago

Oh, dear. Well that sure isn't what I meant when I said "no problem." It's more my generic response to someone thanking me.

[–]Hremsfeld[S] 40 points41 points ago

Hey, no problem.

[–]Helpfulandattractive 1 point2 points ago

That was my first time uploading a video from my phone.... I know better now.

[–]Rizzpooch 4 points5 points ago

that was, in a way, better than the gif. Thanks!

[–]name_with_a_y 6 points7 points ago

You've proved to be helpful. Now we're going to need some proof of your attractiveness.

[–]UselessAndUgly 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, buddy. Pony up!

[–]PalliMoon 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for confirming that was not CGI.

[–]spunkySPORK 1 point2 points ago

Way better than my home test!!! We could only get it to work twice before it wouldn't reignite anymore. :(

[–]rreyv 32 points33 points ago

Whoa when does this gif begin?

[–]Hremsfeld[S] 105 points106 points ago

At its start.

[–]eyecite 53 points54 points ago

My brother knows a scientist and I can confirm this guy is correct.

[–]trauma_kmart 5 points6 points ago

Whoa, really? Duuuuuuddddeee

[–]eyecite 5 points6 points ago

Yup. I can't find a source on me having a brother, but I just read an article on me the other day, and it was in there.

[–]Nimos 4 points5 points ago

[–]akumadiavolo 0 points1 point ago

Welcome to middle school. If you chew on an Wintergreen life saver in the dark you can see it spark. Neato huh?

[–]helloyesthisisgod 2 points3 points ago

Smoke is made up of the byproducts of unburned combustibles. Which means that when heated to a certain point, will ignite (see rollover and flashover in house fires)

[–]FireFightinChick 2 points3 points ago

Smoke is the result of incomplete combustion, and IS flammable. (That's what a flashover or backdraft is- the violent explosion of all those unburned particles).

[–]senichi 0 points1 point ago

Nah, this bot isn't about telling you it's a repost. It's so people can read the comments of the other pictures to check out more information about it.

For example, if you posted this before /u/dummystupid did, people could use this post from /r/SimilarImage to read the comments of your post and find this comment which explains what it actually is. /u/dummystupid's post didn't have a comment like this that explained what was actually happening, so this bot is more of a way to get more information.

[–]Hremsfeld[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh? Thanks! That's good to know. I saw it come up and immediately thought it was just a repost detector. I guess it's not just one, then.
