From Patton Oswalt:

Jim Lehrer: "Miss, I-I'd like to order..."

Waitress: "SHUT UP NERD I'M NOT FINISHED WITH THE SPECIALS" - at a diner tomorrow

[–]PuppyWhirl 23 points24 points ago

You're gonna raise taxes! Electronics! I've got 5 boys! I like coal!

My plan is not like anything that's been done before!

Humpty Dumpty?

[–]vancouver_boy 3 points4 points ago

[–]Duta 0 points1 point ago

Oh my god, that's the most beautiful link... ever.

[–]homezlice 88 points89 points ago

I'm going to burn down the auditorium.

[–]Erik_1 31 points32 points ago

Someone PLEASE dub this into a video of the debate in the same voice.

[–]shulkyman 7 points8 points ago

Wow, taken out of context, that could be some dangerous words right there.

[–]shogun21 0 points1 point ago

In what context are those not dangerous words?

[–]pseudolobster 63 points64 points ago

I BELIEVE YOU HAVE TWO MINUTES

[–]zerato 82 points83 points ago

I had five seconds. FIVE SECONDS JIM.

[–]nuklearchurch 73 points74 points ago

"Actually I had 5 seconds until you interrupted me."

I was like oooooh shit

[–]niperwiper 43 points44 points ago

proceeds to go on for 30 seconds with his point

It was like an extra "fuck you, I'll do what I want Lehrer."

Romney was no better.

[–]suckaduckunion 15 points16 points ago

especially since Romney said he'd get rid of PBS when Lehrer works for them. Romney was looking at him like, "Watch it, bro. I got your fuckin number, bro." Lehrer got shit on the whole time. lol.

[–]Woop_D_Effindoo 9 points10 points ago

BO: lemme sho you how its done, Jim

[–]Torncano 1 point2 points ago

have you been an American for like 3 days then?

[–]gosso920 3 points4 points ago

ObBillieJoeArmstrong: Five FUCKING Seconds!

[–]Grinch420 1 point2 points ago

FIVE SECONDS JIM. UHHH. pause for 5 more seconds

[–]RawnaldII 0 points1 point ago

...Before you interrupted me

[–]pluckydame 25 points26 points ago

[–]kcamrn 6 points7 points ago

I kept telling myself he was trying to draw Romney's face while he was speaking

[–]bigbobo33 24 points25 points ago

[–]gnarwol 7 points8 points ago

psssst... add the stapler

[–]linlorienelen 1 point2 points ago

That hand size ratio (due to angle probably) made me giggle uncontrollably.

[–]AbsoluteZro 34 points35 points ago

I said the exact same thing watching the debate!

Jim was trying to intervene, and I just turned to my friend and muttered: "I believe you have my stapler".

[–]Ghosttwo 36 points37 points ago

"Mr Obama started this section, so I believe I should get the last statement."

"He went first, so you'll start the next section."

"Shut up Jim."

[–]PickledClams 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, same here. :|

[–]soundsjustlike 114 points115 points ago

Seriously, what a fucking doormat

[–]f0urtyfive 117 points118 points ago

I think the problem was his mic was set lower than the candidates. You could hear him attempt to talk over them and it was too quiet. I feel like I recall in previous debates where the moderator had their microphone set to "booming god from above" volume level so they could easily interrupt the candidate.

[–]country_hacker 94 points95 points ago

Why doesn't the moderator have the ability to shut off the candidates' mics? Seems like that would be the perfect solution...

"And in addition, my plan to balance the budget"

"Oh sorry, you're out of time."

[–]Tattis 26 points27 points ago

I want it to be like the Oscars where they just suddenly start blasting classical music to cut them off. I always felt that was the most elegant way of saying, "Shut the fuck up!"

[–]atafies 3 points4 points ago

[–]Grinch420 3 points4 points ago

wrap that shit up B

[–]blueschmoo 30 points31 points ago

I don't think the campaigns would let that happen.

[–]Scarbane 6 points7 points ago

"Oh, you were about to read off facts that back up your claim? Sorry. Next question."

[–]cgeezy22 1 point2 points ago

Exactly, these two men will dictate when they are done talking with class of course. 108 year old Lehrer will not be interrupting the president and candidate like that.

[–]scottydg 2 points3 points ago

That's what I was thinking of. He should be right on the timer. "Oh, your two minutes are up, sorry Mr. Obama" butbutbutbut

[–]suckaduckunion 1 point2 points ago

haha. ...or just hit a button to mute them for 30 seconds them like Around the Horn on ESPN.

[–]The_Poopy 19 points20 points ago

I'm going to play devil's advocate here and ask everyone what was he supposed to do? Tell the President to stfu? Tell the guy that might be President to stfu? Think of the situation he's in.

[–]Thespus 64 points65 points ago

Yes. That's exactly what he's supposed to do. That's what he was hired to do. He's a moderator, not a crippled babysitter.

[–]ForgettableUsername 8 points9 points ago

Are the time rules really the most important thing? I mean, the debate format is already sort of arbitrary because the best ideas aren't necessarily the ones that can be expressed most succinctly. Debate is a rhetorical skill, not a logical one.

[–]herrmister 5 points6 points ago

It's about fairness and giving each side equal time to get their ideas across. This cannot happen of one side is running roughshod over the rules.

[–]ForgettableUsername 2 points3 points ago

Fairness to the individuals shouldn't matter. Some ideas are true and some ideas are false. Being able to express an idea in a short amount of time doesn't make it more likely to be true. Suppose you're in a debate arguing quantum physics and the big bang against somebody who believes the world was created by a giant snail.... If there's a two-minute time limit and an unbiased audience, you'll lose every time because there's no way to convincingly present the totality of modern physics in a two-minute time frame, but a completely fabricated story about everything happening because of the Snail God can be almost immediately expressed.

But, take tonight's debate, do you feel that one side was running over the rules more than the other? It seemed to me that they were both basically ignoring the time limits. It wasn't that there was a bully on one side and a milksop on the other... they were both bullies!

[–]soulcakeduck 2 points3 points ago

The rules are extremely important. Partly that's because of what you just told us. If style matters more than substance, then letting candidates have free reign let's them manipulate the format to provide more style without substance. Well-structured debates should push us more towards content.

Know that we're well-overtime and your opponent won't have a chance to respond? Well, may as well speak past your time limit to throw out some extra nice-sounding lies, since the moderator won't cut you off either.

Asked a specific question on a topic where you poll badly? Spend double your time making dozens of related points so that there's no hope of responding to them, and so that we've even forgotten the original topic by the time you're done.

The bottom line is that strictly adhering to the rules would strongly reward the person with the best rhetorical/debating skills which is what a debate should do. Instead, we reward the person with the best bullshit factory, the most willingness to talk over the moderator, to mislead, to ramble on with sound and fury that amounts to absolutely nothing.

[–]ForgettableUsername 1 point2 points ago

But skilled rhetoric is also bullshit. It just happens to be well-crafted bullshit.

[–]Thespus 1 point2 points ago

It's not about time rules. I don't mind them going over a little bit in time to finish a thought. But when you're trying to cover a large base of topics and you spend your first twenty minutes on a single one, with the back and forth essentially being the same three times over, you stagnate the conversation. The other questions that were supposed to be asked were going to allow them to elaborate on their plans, but they stuck on very general topics for far too long without actually getting specific.

These are grown men, essentially arguing about semantics than policy for the first half (which was all I could watch, at that point South Park became a better way to spend my time).

[–]droivod -3 points-2 points ago

Babysitter? He'd be worse off by all accounts I've seen in the internet about babysitters.

[–]Thespus 2 points3 points ago

I did say "crippled," didn't I? scrolls up

Yes, in fact, I did.

[–]jargoon 4 points5 points ago

Yes, we don't execute journalists for that kind of thing here

[–]TheCheeks 1 point2 points ago

Both candidates agreed to the same rules to the debate.

[–]danrennt98 5 points6 points ago

with a stapler

[–]Oncocerca 3 points4 points ago

That's my stapler.

[–]tasmanian101 8 points9 points ago

Yeah... Im gonna need you to be quiet and let me finish. That'd be great thanks... - Obama and Romney

[–]Woop_D_Effindoo 4 points5 points ago

Bbbut they promised that I would be the one in charge of the debate.

[–]art36 6 points7 points ago

To everyone who claims that Romney walked all over Lehrer, he spoke nearly 5 minutes less.

[–]john_ringwals 7 points8 points ago

Exactly. It wasn't so much that Romney interrupted Lehrer as Lehrer interrupted Romney and tended not to call Obama out for going over time. That being said, I had no problem with the moderation. Both candidates were refreshingly civil.

[–]Catch22af 3 points4 points ago

Sorry, we're in a recession, hand over the stapler

[–]Christophurious 10 points11 points ago

Yes ... Patton Oswalt tweeted this earlier.

[–]bigbobo33 7 points8 points ago

A lot of people had this idea apparently. I first talked to it about my friends when watching it and I don't follow Patton. We are all human raised in a similar society. We are bound to think up the same thoughts once and awhile.

[–]PSteak 2 points3 points ago

First one there gets the points. It's like modern art.

[–]texacer 4 points5 points ago

"I was told that I could listen to only 2 minutes of each response and moderate at a reasonable level."

[–]Old_Fence 14 points15 points ago

Finally someone sees what I have learned tonight. thank you good sir.

[–]JeepTheBeep[S] 22 points23 points ago

I'm just waiting for him to lose it and burn everything to the ground.

[–]Old_Fence 13 points14 points ago

he just found out he is losing his job. he has a lot on his mind.

[–]gosso920 0 points1 point ago

He's going to miss those country club perks. No more freebies on the golf course.

[–]Spezticle_Spence 2 points3 points ago

Just don't fuck with his stapler.

[–]vitorizzo 3 points4 points ago

Jim Lehrer - the times up we have to go to the next topic

Romney/ Obama - hold on i have one more point to make on this

jim lehrer -

[–]danladot 0 points1 point ago

i..ii..i..i burn the country to the ground if you two don't SHUT THE FUCK UP AND ONLY SPEAK FOR TWO MINUTES

[–]mcdxi11 2 points3 points ago

Obama in tonight's debates

FTFY. What a let down.

[–]cnot3 2 points3 points ago

Lumbergh FUCKED her

[–]pooping_on_your_face 1 point2 points ago

L for love!

[–]Gus54 1 point2 points ago

Perfect. Best post concerning the debate.

[–]Jenovacell 1 point2 points ago

The longer I looked at it the more I was sure it was a .gif His eyes seem to get bigger the longer you stare

[–]Leon_Magnus 1 point2 points ago

Everytime I watch Office Space or see a picture of Milton I get really depressed. That's me in about 5 years.

[–]Haqua 0 points1 point ago

It's like they got /u/Skeen to moderate the debate or something.

[–]Livin_The_High_Life 0 points1 point ago

HA! I figured it out... pathetic.... I'll set the building on fire

[–]notmynothername 0 points1 point ago

I thought that it was really a competition between the two that escalated after starting innocently enough. Can't just let the other guy assert his dominance! See the Bitch-Slap theory of electoral politics.

[–]gnarwol 1 point2 points ago

I felt so bad for the guy, he was just trying to do his job. Midway through the debate I started picturing how awesome if would have been if he'd exploded at one of them. I don't even care which one, it would have just been so fucking alpha and then let's see you try to gather up the courage to cut funding to PBS, because Jim Lehrer just went all Red Ross.

[–]justinx117 -1 points0 points ago

Should have been Anderson Cooper

[–]soulcakeduck 1 point2 points ago

I've always thought the moderators should be able to just cut off the microphone for either or both speakers. What the hell is a moderator if you can just speak over them?

[–]purple_water 1 point2 points ago

he has a "what the hell is America about to get into" face

[–]Bosswantsitdeeper 0 points1 point ago

Why are people ragging on the guy? He got them to talk about the subjects and if they really really wanted some extra time to make a point, he let them. I thought he did a great job of encouraging discourse.

[–]greatguns 0 points1 point ago

move dammit, MOVE!(and talk)

[–]Mental_octo -1 points0 points ago

Sorry, where is this Jim guy in the debates?

I am being sarcastic guys..

[–]SirDiego -1 points0 points ago

The debates have just gotten so pathetic.

[–]beccaw 0 points1 point ago

The best part was after he said he didn't do that great a job moderating them and Obama told him be did great, Jim just said "No."

[–]authentic_trust_me 0 points1 point ago

Go read the comments in election central

Actually, here: I'll be taken your stapler now

[–]authentic_trust_me 0 points1 point ago

I can't even tell if they're trolling anymore.

[–]graciewontgotosleep 0 points1 point ago

Candy Crowley's gotta bring the pain.

[–]TheRapeBar 0 points1 point ago

People complain about moderators asking too many questions and stifling actual debate and then when the candidates actually debate people complain.

[–]mynameiswut 0 points1 point ago

did he even want to do it? "Lehrer had said that he would not moderate any more debates after the 2008 election"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Lehrer

[–]illmoney 0 points1 point ago

Judge Judy would have had that shit on lock if she'd been moderator.

[–]desynch 0 points1 point ago

if you're pretty much in the dark about the debate and missed it like i did, you can go back and watch it in it's entirety here

[–]starbuxed 0 points1 point ago

I would pay per view it if someone like red from "that 70's show" was in charge.

[–]seivadgerg 0 points1 point ago

i swear if you interrupt me one more time, i.. ill burn this auditorium down

[–]ronfromcny -1 points0 points ago

For this, you should get a Nobel.

[–]JeepTheBeep[S] 18 points19 points ago

It's frustrating. He's allowing each of them to attack the other and then filibuster our memories so the other can't get in a proper response in time. It's important for the moderator to cut them off. That's his job!

[–]ronfromcny 5 points6 points ago

I watched 25 minutes of it streaming online, then I had to stop. Should have known.

[–]moviemadnessmayhem 0 points1 point ago

I do agree with you, but I honestly wonder how much he could do about it. I mean, we'd like to think the moderator could cut them off. But it's not like he can stand up, punch them in the face, and say, "SHUT THE FUCK UP, WE'RE MOVING ON!" Romney and Obama showed him no respect and just talked over him when he tried to move the discussion along. I don't know what Lehrer could have done other than start yelling. And yelling would have been very unprofessional.

[–]chargerland -3 points-2 points ago

This. Exactly what I was thinking. Each time I was waiting for Obama to respond to his blatant lies but he kept talking and I don't think Obama could keep up with it. It also seemed like Romney always got the last word because he just cut Lehrer off

[–]YoungBernie -2 points-1 points ago

I was literally thinking the exact same thing the whole debate! I didn't even think about how much karma it was worth lol.

[–]jonnyrotten7 -2 points-1 points ago

Hey, while everybody's beating up on Obama, in his defense, he did make some great points. Unfortunately, most of them were for Romney.

[–]TILAHHAKEN -2 points-1 points ago

Have you seen my stapler? :c

[–]Attempt12 -3 points-2 points ago

Who cares?! You're being fed lies by one guy, and fables by the other! Huge deal, shit, really??

Burn this bitch down Milton, let's go to r/mexico...

[–]phantom69x -4 points-3 points ago

I was thinking the same thing haha

[–]legatic -4 points-3 points ago

Are you one of my friends on facebook? o_O I posted this exact same pic (literally, exact same size) about an hour ago

Edit: not mad or claiming you stole it, just wondering if I know you IRL

[–]JeepTheBeep[S] 5 points6 points ago

Nope, just grabbed it off of Google. Shouldn't be surprising as it was one of the top pics for "office space milton." My only regret is that I couldn't find an animated gif.

[–]BeezowPooPoo_ZGopGop 11 points12 points ago

[–]bw007 0 points1 point ago

I've brought you... a stapler.

[–]mtchen8 -5 points-4 points ago

Justed watched this movie not 10 minutes ago. Are you a wizard reddit?

[–]Maximillion_954 -5 points-4 points ago

UPVOTE for you my friend. thank you for saying something.
