Don't know anything about the picture, but even if the boys are brothers, it doesn't necessarily show a culture clash. There is a tradition in south east asia of boys being ordained as a monk temporarily, so we can't assume that the boy is a monk still or that the boy on the right has not been one

[–]RikF 199 points200 points ago

Indeed. Saw a lot of this in Thailand. People choose to become a monk for a period of time and then return to their normal lives.

[–]Tzuan 42 points43 points ago

Yup, my grandpa did this. Not sure if they still do this or even how common this is but he apparently had to study English in addition to Buddhism (and I'm assuming other things as well), and he has retained his knowledge of the language quite well. In any case, these days you would never guess his drinking, smoking, jovial self ever did time in a monastery haha.

[–]mazing_azn 80 points81 points ago

They still do this. Some Thai Buddhist kids in the USA do it too. Usually during the summer after High School. Source: Me, I did it.

[–]AllWoWNoSham 11 points12 points ago

This may sound rather odd, but what are the age specifications for this say could you do it at like 18 and furthermore can foreigners or those out side the culture do it?

[–]IcanAutoFellate 58 points59 points ago

My friend told me wild stories about his brother. In one such story, his brother traveled to Thailand with very little money. After a drug induced Hangover-2-style bender he ran out of money, and had nowhere to go. Thus, he went to a Buddhist temple in Bangkok and sat down, cross-legged. He said he sat there for a whole day, and fell asleep that night. He was awakened (no pun) by a monk, who brought him inside said temple. They spoke very little English, but they took him in as one of their own. He said it was mostly meditating for hours on end, and eating very little food. He described the meditation as the most intense drug he's ever done... and this guy's done a fear and loathing amount of drugs, mind you. Mayhaps coming off of drugs, and meditating strung-out made it that much more intense.. who knows. Possibly, he went to the temple for the wrong reasons. But that's neither here, nor there, and not my judgement to make. Just thought I'd share that story!

[–]AllWoWNoSham 13 points14 points ago

Wow that is amazing, I'd love to do something like that just as an experience it seems amazing.

[–]_That_One_Guy_ 2 points3 points ago

Are you referencing his story or his username?

[–]japanese_cat 2 points3 points ago

why not both?

[–]kilolb 2 points3 points ago

I have seen foreigners do it before so I would say that is a possibility.

[–]mic_ill_chafe_ox 7 points8 points ago

Yep, I went on a completely free silent mediation course in a monastery in northern Thailand. The monks run them for curious foreigners.

Plenty of meditating, some yoga and a lot of interesting explanation of the monks' lifestyle.

Ended up donating a good amount of money to the monastery, but there was no pressure to donate. They just pointed out the box and let you approach it when they weren't there. Genuine monks who were trying to purge themselves of material desires.

Would definitely recommend. 5/5.

Edit: should check my posts when written on my phone. Predictive text makes for odd mistakes.

[–]lumponmygroin 8 points9 points ago

I think they generally try and do a minimum of 15 days. You'll still see a bunch of monks hanging around smoking.

[–]KallistiEngel 8 points9 points ago

Just 15 days? I would have assumed longer. Shit, I could do anything out of my normal routine for 15 days and not bat an eye.

[–]lumponmygroin 13 points14 points ago

Some people do it for longer - some people do it for the rest of their lives.

They generally can only do it for a short time because many have to support their families.

[–]holysocks 54 points55 points ago

Thai monks wear orange/yellow

[–]Espressojet 135 points136 points ago

Yes. Yes they do. This comment had no connection between it's parent though

[–]GreatGoogly-Moogly 24 points25 points ago

This is the internet so... No.

[–]StrawberryJamal 13 points14 points ago

Right, almost forgot.

It would take 11 Empire State Buildings, stacked one on top of the other, to measure the Gulf of Mexico at its deepest point.

[–]Gorau 16 points17 points ago

You would have thought they could come up with a better and easier way of measuring it by now.

[–]amosjones 2 points3 points ago

A really really long tape measure would be easier to use.

Organic thought doesn't necessarily follow a common thread.

[–]cupatea 1 point2 points ago

yes it does

[–]cupatea 5 points6 points ago

your right, these monks with maroon colored robes are probably from tibet/bhutan, maybe burma.

[–]istrebitjel 19 points20 points ago

Came here to post this ;)

When we traveled through Thailand we talked to many young monks. Often times, the family sends the boys, so they have less mouths to feed for a while.

I actually helped one of them set up an email account and we stayed in contact for a few years. He liked to help himself to tiny bits of our food when no one was watching, but they are supposed to fast during the day.

Anyway, this picture shows regular life in Thailand/Laos. Often times

[–]BunzLee 6 points7 points ago

Yes? YES? The missing point at the end is completely throwing me off balance... So, go on... We need to hear more.

[–]Barangtastic 11 points12 points ago

Having lived there for a couple of years, I'd hazard this is taken in Burma/Myanmar, probably Mandalay.

As you said, it's common for Buddhist men to become a monk for a few weeks at about that age, probably what's going on here.

It does show a culture clash though - the whole country's one great big one.

[–]catillyza 3 points4 points ago

Have to agree -- definitely Myanmar, tho my money leans more to Yangon than Mandalay based more on the smoking boy whose behaviour would likely be less tolerated there. Maybe also Bagan since the place became over-touristed and younger guys picked up on Western/East Asian hustle moves. Still, I'm guessing the robed boy is sāmaṇera (novice in training) rather than temporarily ordained. As such, he's still learning and not really ordained. Most likely he's from quite a poor family and getting school level education in a monastic school for free, or he's the youngest of a largish family and been directed to the local monastery. If so, depending on aptitude, etc., he'll get a chance to be ordained at around sixteen years of age. As noted, Burmese men take temporary ordination from time to time throughout their lives -- tho not as often or easily as in Thailand where ordination often proves a useful way of escaping prison sentences for lesser crimes.

[–]vaginamitus 4 points5 points ago

Its still a pretty cool pic

[–]TroubadourCeol 844 points845 points ago

[–]CrownChakra 515 points516 points ago

I smell a sitcom.

[–]ckallas2 267 points268 points ago

Oh, and they're both Adam Sandler! Wouldn't that just be wacky?

[–]xrawfish 118 points119 points ago

Why stop there? Everyone is Adam Sandler! The guy on the motorcycle , the person crouching to the left, the blurry people in the background. All Sandler. It'll be glorious!

[–]CalaveraManny 111 points112 points ago

Then a black family moves in next door and they're all played by Eddie Murphy.

[–]vijrox 131 points132 points ago

Nope, still Sandler. I'm worried you're completely missing the point, unfortunately.

[–]Spazit 76 points77 points ago

No, you ruined season two! Where you find out that the Eddie Murphy family is just Adam Sandler in blackface.

[–]jqrd4n 42 points43 points ago

Every season a new person is everyone. Robin Williams does the final season, and plays 32,000 people in the season premier. This becomes his final project. The Age of Aquarius begins.

Edit: And the second Season of Firefly starts 2 weeks later.

[–]Norma5tacy 1 point2 points ago

With Tyler Perry in there somewhere.

[–]mcwizard 14 points15 points ago

Everyone except a suspicious onlooker!

[–]Nicoon 2 points3 points ago

The AC/DC shirt represents tradition, right?

[–]shake-zula 17 points18 points ago

Has to be. And the red dress is modern because he's exercising his GLBT rights.

[–]HarmonicMinorShred 0 points1 point ago

Has to be. AC/DC are anything but modern.

[–]xXxCREECHERxXx 12 points13 points ago

wouldnt say its breath taking...

[–]CerpinTaxes 394 points395 points ago

It really bugs me when people post pictures like this with that extra unnecessary personal opinion on the end.

"Absolutely breathtaking" "Stunning" "Incredible" "Mind blowing"

I'll be the judge of whether I find this picture breathtaking or not thanks very much, I don't need the sensationalism.

It's a neat picture, but no, it does not "leave me breathless", when people say shit like that about relatively innocuous pictures it just makes me picture you all as fawning dandies that faint from elation at the mere suggestion of a well executed photograph.

Rein it in guys, no need to cream your panties.

[–]I_like_owls 222 points223 points ago

Under promise - Over deliver

Some people here are just really bad at sharing and end up returning to these most used adjectives, it makes me feel cheated that my breath wasn't taken

[–]QueueNX 2 points3 points ago

Much like the oft bastardized "epic".

[–]phasmy 2 points3 points ago

Agreed completely. Adding little adjectives at the end just makes it seem like the OP is trying to sell his post.

[–]shoelessbob 3 points4 points ago

It's called editorializing and at least my school taught me how not to use it

[–]whaddupgee 17 points18 points ago

Well idk about "breathtaking"

[–]Lilyo 62 points63 points ago

I'll just summarize what happens in these threads really quick.

  1. OP submits post1.
  2. Upvotes to the left2.
  3. Someone reposts top comment from old thread.
  4. Upvotes to the left.
  5. Someone complains subtly about it being a reposts.
  6. Upvotes to the left.
  7. Someone complains about people complaining about reposts.
  8. Upvotes to the left.
  9. Repeate in a few months weeks.

1: OP might not know this is a repost and might not be posting for karma

2: People upvoting don't know or care if it's a repost and other people have seen it before.

[–]LetsHavePun 20 points21 points ago

[–]BreadFriendForever 7 points8 points ago

TIL AC/DC is considered modern.

[–]rastapasta808 17 points18 points ago

Absolutely breathtaking?.

Not really. Its just a sign of the times. This has been recreated many times from the 60s to the punk rock era.

[–]soviyet 10 points11 points ago

Oh my God what happened to my breath it's been taken!!!!!!

Honestly, breathtaking???

[–]yanksnjets27 43 points44 points ago

You ruined it by saying absolutely breathtaking because its not

[–]sethbw 3 points4 points ago

How is this breathtaking? There is a kid smoking something. That ain't right.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points ago

The word breathtaking is thrown around here too much. It's an interesting picture, but it certainly didn't take my breath away...

[–]SirLaughter 23 points24 points ago

Not...really...

[–]DoctorSteve 10 points11 points ago

What's breathtaking about this? What's with the hyperbole on this site? It's aggravating.

[–]MiranDaVinci 18 points19 points ago

"Breathtaking" is a bit of a hyperbole here.

[–]circleback 3 points4 points ago

The kid donning the monks robes will disrobe shortly afterwards and start smoking cigarettes and maybe wear a Judas Priest shirt!

[–]Game_boy 4 points5 points ago

Ang what are you doing. Get back to the air temple.

[–]daftrecluse 6 points7 points ago

In what part of the world has underage cigarette smoking become a "culture" ? This post title is more shit than shit usually is.

[–]crushcrushcrush 18 points19 points ago

is it breathtaking because of the cig? TEE HEE I MAKE JOKE ON REDDIES.

[–]Grandpa_Edd 2 points3 points ago

Reddies somehow sounds like an STD.

[–]zippe 10 points11 points ago

I have no idea where this is, who these kids are, what the cultural context is, or even whether the exotic-looking red robe on the right is in any way representative of "tradition" in their culture, which I know nothing about.

But yeah. Breathtaking.

[–]dwarfsshortage 9 points10 points ago

Breathtaking is the wrong word.

[–]Treyzif 5 points6 points ago

Great shot, but I have to critique composition a little bit. This photo would be stronger if it was cropped just past the guy on the bike, and the woman on the left.

[–]DaSasquatch 1 point2 points ago

Notice how they are still holding hands, this is more of a unity than a clash

[–]xEzio 1 point2 points ago

I'm Thai and my family still follow the tradition where the boys/man become a monk for certain amount. They usually do it to cleanses and to Thanks their parents and family (but more to the parents). Yes I was a temp monk for a while.
