In fairness, the Statue of Liberty wasn't a gift from the French State - the funding came entirely from private individuals ("the people of France").

The idea being that French people would fund the statue and American people would fund the pedestrial. When the statue finally shipped, there was a lot of discussion in the States why the French people would push unneeded expenditure toward the local people and better uses for the money were proposed. Also; the statue was awful because it didn't show any real people on it. Symbolism wasn't in the rage.

Yeah I never knew until I took the Staten Island ferry and went right by it. A lot smaller than you think
