Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Is that not a C-130 Hercules, not an AC-130?

[–]howiez 5 points6 points ago

Thought so too. AC-130 would have distinctive guns pointing out of it.

It's also not an 'Angel of Death' defense, it's the 'Guardian Angel' defense.

[–]aequitas3 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking... diverting an incoming missile is done by the angel of death?

[–]MrKrinkle151 0 points1 point ago

The first thing I said when I saw the picture. Glad I'm not crazy.

[–]valeriob 10 points11 points ago

Those little green dots that mirror the flares is what happens when you forget to take off your polarizing lens filter and shoot in low light.

[–]reversekarma 0 points1 point ago

TIL that

[–]riverwalker 5 points6 points ago

That's extremely bad ass. I can't imagine the feeling of power you have when you're flying one of those. It's a god damn flying battleship.

[–]sinner_di 6 points7 points ago

After having to maintain these things for a year and a half, I envy your outlook. In my mind they are constantly breaking leaky sky buses.

[–]rhunex 1 point2 points ago

Just some fun facts: The fuselage of a C-130 can fit snuggly inside a C-5. Also, a fully loaded C-130 weighs about the same as all of the fuel in a C-5.

[–]TheLoneHoot 3 points4 points ago

Also the interior cargo area of a C-5 is a foot longer than the Wright brothers' first flight.

[–]dog_in_the_vent 3 points4 points ago

Neither of these are AC-130s, they look like USMC KC-130s.

[–]ineedtopoop89 2 points3 points ago

How can you tell they're USMC?

[–]Guysmiley777 2 points3 points ago

They're KC-130s (judging by the second set of "tanks" under the wings) and the USMC is the most likely operator based on the color scheme in that photo.

[–]panders2reddit 5 points6 points ago

Isn't "Angel of Death" the exact opposite of what the flares actually represent?

[–]rasputine 3 points4 points ago

For the pilots? Yes. For the people trying to shoot it down? It's a pretty fucking bad day.

[–]AmuzedMob 0 points1 point ago

Wow I'm a fucking nerd I read that as AC -130 (as in armor count) like nethack which -130 would be unholy good and if I remember correct unobtainable I was like omfg, then I read the comments and understood what the AC-130 part of that meant all in all though epic picture.

[–]readdit1 0 points1 point ago

AC-130 launching the worlds' first flaming upvote.

[–]CheezIts_YAY 1 point2 points ago

I finally get it!

[–]bag-o-tricks 0 points1 point ago

Why is this called "Angel of Death"? Isn't this just chaff; a defensive counter-measure to "hide" the aircraft from incoming missiles?

[–]techieman33 0 points1 point ago

Those are flares, not chaff. The flares burn hot and will hopefully be a more appealing target to a heat seeking missile. Chaff is a bunch of tiny pieces of aluminum that create false returns on radar, and help decoy radar guided missiles.

[–]bag-o-tricks 0 points1 point ago

That's right. I guess my main point was that it's really a "Guardian Angel" rather than one of death.

[–]hippopotacat 0 points1 point ago

HEY JOHNNY DEPP! MONITOR, THE KINGDOM OF THE DELL!

[–]domox 1 point2 points ago

They are called "Angel Wings", because they essentially are saving the craft...

[–]Geruvah 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. These flares aren't anywhere near the angel of death. There was an AC-130 named Azrael, but that's about as far as that title goes.

[–]VallanMandrake 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of the Hellsing Ultimate (anime) OVA numer 8... through they did that with helicopters and flamethrowers...

And a phoenix shall rise from the ashes.

[–]TheLoneHoot 1 point2 points ago

What does that even mean in this situation?

[–]shan6 3 points4 points ago

He's really, really high. Just let him be.

[–]MattnJax -2 points-1 points ago

'Murica!! That's badass. Using the AC-130 in Call of Duty was always fun.
