Puppy in training is the most adorable thing I've read ever.

[–]Chinese_redditor 24 points25 points ago

They better be getting little graduation caps.

[–]MrTomMarvoloRiddle 4 points5 points ago

If they aren't monsters, yes.

Service dogs are the most amazing animals ever! I've seen one enter a woman's PIN on an ATM for her. My heart melted.

Amen. I recently got a service dog and now I don't know how I ever managed without her.

[–]Shyguy1119 6 points7 points ago

If you don't mind me asking, why do you need him/her?

[–]JimmyKeepCool 14 points15 points ago

Nah, I don't mind. She's a psychiatric service, so she helps me with various aspects of my mental disorder. That is, Generalized Anxiety Disorder with Social Phobia. Plus some traits of Avoidant Personality Disorder with depression on the side (woot woot).

(If this was a real-life conversation, you would at this point in time say "oh... that's... nice" and then slowly move away from me. After all, metal illnesses are very contagious.)

So yeah, besides being a good friend to me, she helps counteract a lot of my negative tendencies (like withdrawing and/or panicking).

Basically, she does every thing medication does (and more) without the shitty side-effects.

[–]QuaereVerumm 8 points9 points ago

I wouldn't move away. I'm glad she is there for you. :)

[–]JimmyKeepCool 5 points6 points ago

Awww... You're a good person.

[–]QuaereVerumm 4 points5 points ago

Thanks! So are you!

[–]Shyguy1119 3 points4 points ago

Neat. I didn't know they could train dogs for social phobia... then again, a dog wouldn't really need to be trained to try to be a friend.

[–]JimmyKeepCool 8 points9 points ago

It's crazy all the things dogs can do, they really are quite clever. You can pretty much train them to help with any kind of disability.

Yeah, for social phobia, a lot of the things she does just come naturally to her as a dog (be my friend, be a distraction/point of focus for others and myself, act as a barrier between me and others (she likes to lean against me and is quite protective)).

[–]amoxummo 2 points3 points ago

How does that work exactly? She's your dog, right? Or does she actually belong to some organization?

[–]JimmyKeepCool 4 points5 points ago

Yes, she is my dog. She was trained through a special organization, but she's mine.

[–]IkeHmope 21 points22 points ago

I see them around my town a lot. The cutest ones are the ones just starting their training. They walk around Target but want to wander off and sniff everything and say "hi" to everyone.

Guide dogs are such wonderful animals; we were blessed to adopt a retired guide dog (yellow lab) and he is the sweetest thing EVER. Two years of training, seven faithful years of service and we adopted him after that; he is thirteen and a half years old and loving retirement. His new job is to be the family dog...it took him a while to get used to it but he is loving life and we are so, so glad to take care of him and love him through his golden years! (He is sound asleep at my feet right now; if I stood up, he would wake, stand and be ready to go with me wherever I went. Amazing.)

[–]TheBlindCat 5 points6 points ago

it took him a while to get used to it

In what ways? Because I'm sure it was adorable.

[–]lizzyborden42 5 points6 points ago

a friend used to train them while we were on college. The school let students be part of the program and keep the dog in the dormitory. The school gave space for the training classes to be held. It was awesome having dogs in the classroom. Also, really really hard not to cuddle them when they are working.

[–]sariaslani 9 points10 points ago

If angels are real, he is one of them. Such a beautiful puppy!

[–]lazywolfpup 2 points3 points ago

Read that as "little face, big fart."

I have seen some service dogs in training and the first thing the trainer always says is please don't pet the dog, this always upsets me, because I feel like they need love and attention too, I don't know if you know, but I was wondering if they do get the same kind of attention as any other dog outside of their training?

[–]themooninthesky 10 points11 points ago

Dogs don't need love from strangers to be happy. Plus they shouldn't be distracted from their job, since they are working for a pretty darn good reason. And the working dogs get to spend a lot more time with their people then regular pets.

[My dog? Isn't a service dog, but he a working breed, and he is a rescue with some past and some still current behavioural issues, so he is not allowed to say hello to people on walks, even though he quite likes people. It's just too distracting for him which can lead to him panicking later on, and he knows that I have given him the job of doing what I tell him and carrying his backpack on walks. But trust me, he is spoiled with love from those around him in my life]

[–]AWDinary 11 points12 points ago

All service dogs get 'off-duty' time where the jacket comes off and they know they are allowed to be a regular dog. The reason they use Labradors and Lab mixes is because they just want to PLEASE their owner.

Puppy raiser here.

Believe me, once my dog's cape is taken off and he is "released" he becomes a "normal" dog. He's allowed to play, to rough-house, and he gets PLENTY of love and attention. Just because I'm his puppy raiser doesn't mean I'm heartless and strict all the time, only when he's working.

[–]traumajunkie46 0 points1 point ago

How do you get to be a puppy raiser? I've wanted to do so for years and am only now coming to the point in my life where it will be possible for me to do so.

[–]Fluorescent_Yogurt 0 points1 point ago

I mentioned this in a comment further down in the thread:

Most guide dog / service dog organizations are always looking for puppy raisers. You typically have to fill out an application and be approved to become one. More information, and an application can be found on their website. The more well known guide dog organization is Guide Dogs for The Blind. Or, if you're interested in raising a Service Dog, I would recommend Canine Companions for Independence.

A Hero in the making.

[–]_TheFifth_ -1 points0 points ago

little face, big heart, smelly farts

[–]leilalover -1 points0 points ago

Not to dampen the mood, but I find it funny that being forced into training somehow equates to having a big heart. Cute dog though.

Saw it on 'Dog Bless You' FB site and thought worth sharing in /r/aww :3

Not having a go at you, just letting you know :)

[–]han__brolo -3 points-2 points ago

It really isn't fair how this little guy is now condemned to a shitty life of service. Domesticated animals should be pets that you love and care for not slaves to help you with your lazy ass.
