It's amazing how successfully he was able to turn a life's worth of passion into a household name by doing nothing but be himself. I have an undying respect for what he accomplished.

[–][deleted] 155 points156 points ago

It wasn't just crocs he hunted, but other critters as well. A jack of all trades

[–]khaosking 135 points136 points ago

[–]Alot_Hunter 86 points87 points ago

Run in crocs? You kidding me?

[–]Ederek_Cole 28 points29 points ago

And it just got worse.

[–]relevant_xkcd- 15 points16 points ago

[–]wackymayor 50 points51 points ago

Well, some critters were closer to his heart than others.

[–]EpicJ 160 points161 points ago

[–]FNGPete 31 points32 points ago

Confirmed. This made me sadder than a sack of drowned puppies.

[–]NaturalSenescence 45 points46 points ago

...Well I enjoyed it.

[–]AAlexanderK 76 points77 points ago

Well, maybe that comment hurt some of us more than others...

ಥ_ಥ

[–]Jiggy11 10 points11 points ago

Ugh...

[–]MrSynical 14 points15 points ago

Too soon? You're right. Too soon.

[–]Abrootalname 4 points5 points ago

[–]ProbablyNotLying 3 points4 points ago

This is horrible, but...

[–]Jiggy11 12 points13 points ago

We could all be better people by following his example. Just do what we love. That in itself will give us the drive to become successful. We shouldn't work, just to become successful. We should become successful because we work.

[–]Heelincal 18 points19 points ago

Kinda piggy-backing off of this, but here's the whole commercial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU0UFbxZDGM

[–]platypus_bear 4 points5 points ago

I feel that this is what should have been posted instead of the .gif in the op

[–]Heelincal 4 points5 points ago

Welcome to Reddit haha

[–]steenarie 1084 points1085 points ago

Still too soon for me. I miss that beautiful man.

[–]luctheman 121 points122 points ago

Well, at least his son is following the footsteps of his father.

I saw his funeral back in 2006. And I was genuinely sad, that the man who inspired millions of people to love animals, had passed on. And he did it with so much passion.

[–]VonBrewskie 68 points69 points ago

Look at that little toe-head. He looks just like his pop. I hope he doesn't feel compelled to follow in his dad's footsteps. I hope, if he does, he does it because it's what he wants to do. I sure miss that goofy bugger. He was the best. I always thought it would be cool if he and Sir David Attenbourough teamed up and had an eco-crime fighting team called the "Naturenauts". Steve's powers would obviously be control over animals and Sir Attenbourough would soothe criminals into submission with his velvety voice, and also have robot arms.

[–]boatsinthebellfry 18 points19 points ago

I love you.

[–]mycroft2000 6 points7 points ago

*tow-head

[–]bottle_cap 7 points8 points ago

I'm not even his son and I want to follow in his footsteps.

[–]Bat-Kieran 52 points53 points ago

His daughter is doing the same, right?

[–]bethanyj 28 points29 points ago

Yes. Bindi was doing all sorts of stuff at the zoo on an episode of Kate + 8.

(It's cute to watch, even if you hate Kate)

[–]Mugiwara04 7 points8 points ago

I saw Bindi on Oprah when she was about four or something? She was very young and Steve was still with us. Anyway Bindi comes out on stage with a snake around her neck, and Oprah's all "whoaaa okay there" and Bindi handles the snake like a pro.

[–]elessarjd 4 points5 points ago

Man I tried to watch that for Bindi, but just can't tolerate the show.

[–]steenarie 18 points19 points ago

I did not know that about his son. That is pretty amazing!

[–]Capwiz 7 points8 points ago

This is the best thing I've heard all day.

[–]PenguinJuice69 252 points253 points ago

Makes me cry :( I felt a fatherly loss

[–]AscentofDissent 194 points195 points ago

That was a depressing week for me. I watched Steve Irwin after school through the entirety of time he was on the air. There was no other person that genuinely loved nature and life in general like him on TV. His personality was larger than life but at the same time very real. That stupid-ass "animals in his heart" joke that gets put at the top of every single mention of him on Reddit irritates me a bit.

[–]Zenn1nja 54 points55 points ago

I feel you. I remember the day I got on the bus for school and everyone was joking about it. I don't remember what I said but I know I told most of them off for being shitty people.

[–]jackskidney 13 points14 points ago

Humor and sorrow are not mutually exclusive. The humor helped negate the sadness of his death for me. besides, Steve wouldn't want everyone to get all gloomy over his death. The guy new what he was doing.

[–]Shilo59 8 points9 points ago

He died the way he lived, with animals in his heart.

[–]SnapeWho 14 points15 points ago

I had a Steve Irwin cake for my 9th birthday. I still have the figurine of him wrestling a croc from the top of it. I cried.

[–]aengelpxl 22 points23 points ago

Well there is David Attenborough. When he dies, I think I'll stop watching nature documentaries altogether.

[–]imitator22 10 points11 points ago

Argh, it won't be long really either i don't think. That is going to be one fucking sad day.

[–]lockstock_teardrops 31 points32 points ago

I had a laugh before I cried, at least

[–]EdricStorm 53 points54 points ago

Yeah, the gif went like this for me.

:)

[–]pisspoorpeter 9 points10 points ago

Evry tim

[–]ErichUberSonic 64 points65 points ago

Still so sad. He's the equivalent of Bill Nye or Niel DeGrasse Tyson - Extremely important in educating the youth in their respective fields.

[–]stemcide 45 points46 points ago

This.

There's a reason reddit loves Bill Nye and Neil DeGrasse Tyson (and Steve Irwin), and that reason is because those men captured the hearts and minds of redditors when they were young. Educating the youth is so important and these 3 men were some of the best ever at doing so.

[–]simeon94 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, when I heard he died, I had to leave the room I was in because I felt so much more emotion than I thought I would. It really hit me hard.

I nearly punched a kid who was making jokes about it, and I'm not that kind of person at all.

[–]Mugiwara04 14 points15 points ago

Posted this in my own comment but maybe you'll like it too.

(I'm not religious, but the spirit of that pic is kind of awesome)

[–]paulfknwalsh 6 points7 points ago

strewth, i bloody well miss the bugger too.

[–]xixGMCxix 5 points6 points ago

It will always be too soon. Always

[–]Detry 3 points4 points ago

Too soon? I like being reminded of his awesomeness.

[–]canhazhotness 20 points21 points ago

This is what I came here for. Thank you.

[–]delitt 8 points9 points ago

me too :)

[–]kellenthehun 13 points14 points ago

For some reason I feel like the best part is, "John! Give us a hand mate!"

[–]IAMA_Ghost_Boo 3 points4 points ago

Why the hell did I have to scroll all the way down here to find this.

[–]etherealducky 5 points6 points ago

Really wish they had just posted this instead. Im tired of .gif's

[–]lol_panda 5 points6 points ago

Go to /r/videos bro

[–]Ethosia 2 points3 points ago

Clicked gif, waited for it to load while counting to 10 in my head, gave up, then came here to watch a higher quality video with sound that loads within a second.

[–]HptmAkira 205 points206 points ago

Return If Possible

[–]torchdexto 63 points64 points ago

Holy shit, this is so much more depressing than "Rest In Peace" I sad now.

[–]HptmAkira 6 points7 points ago

I just want him back :(

[–]torchdexto 5 points6 points ago

We all do. :(

[–]Mugiwara04 8 points9 points ago

I want to believe in reincarnation so I can use that legitimately.

[–]Natten 46 points47 points ago

Im not gonna add anything new to the topic, just agree with everyone.

I miss this man, and I never met him once.

[–]JohnQuittenton 85 points86 points ago

I can still remember finding out he had died, and the feeling of my heart dropping.

[–]i_love_younicorns 16 points17 points ago

I was at dinner my freshman year of college and my friends and I looked up at the TV in the cafeteria, which played CNN 24/7 and saw the news that Steve had died. The entire cafeteria pretty much fell silent. I remember my friend Sean was the first to speak and he just said "FUCK. FUCK. NO. FUCK. MY CHILDHOOD!" That pretty much summed it up for me.

[–]Lizardizzle 6 points7 points ago

My homepage was yahoo.com (yeah, fuck me, right?) and came home to the news on Yahoo's news window.

[–]nabuzasan 16 points17 points ago

same exact feeling. In fact when I was told I was overseas and didn't believe it till I asked my family back home and they confirmed it. Made the deployment that much harder.

[–]MOAR_KRABS 177 points178 points ago

God dammit I can't get past this grief.

[–]wolfvision 36 points37 points ago

Truly heartbreaking. People like that deserve eternity for them and their whole family. He was one of a kind, can't see anyone replacing him... ever

[–]_supernovasky_ 16 points17 points ago

Man it sucks because you don't really think about it and then someone posts something like this.

[–]MxDaleth 5 points6 points ago

I would gladly swap my life for his, such a truly genuine and inspirational guy, it was and is a horrible tragedy.

[–]thatsmyredditaccount 238 points239 points ago

[–]vuxa 207 points208 points ago

[–]nrbartman 36 points37 points ago

I don't know what the fuck this is but it turned my sad feels into happy feels somehow. Thx.

[–]quierotacos 48 points49 points ago

[–]SpongeFreak52 9 points10 points ago

Oh thanks

It do, man. It do.

[–]transportman 17 points18 points ago

RIP you awesome bastard

[–]br00tman 17 points18 points ago

Maaaaan. =/

[–]slaminsammy 99 points100 points ago

One of the worst parts about him passing was about a month later, a group of "animal activists" came out and said how Steve Irwin was hurting these animals and how it's better that he's not around them anymore.

I wanted to punch their dicks off.

[–]TheChosenOne013 35 points36 points ago

It amazes me how people can get to that point. What in your life led you to be such a strong animal activist where you are glad an innocent human being died? You know? I just don't get it sometimes...

[–]CurlyNippleHairs 17 points18 points ago

Not only is it cruel, but humans are animals too. Their argument makes literally no sense.

[–]mastersergeant98 9 points10 points ago

While what some of them do is very commendable. The majority are a bunch of assholes.

[–]Nemo7123 5 points6 points ago

It's the same with people protesting wars at soldiers' funerals. Seriously?? Whats wrong with you people?

[–]IcaboBob 15 points16 points ago

Guys I miss Steve.

[–]chunky_goonie 44 points45 points ago

I was actually in school at UF when I heard someone at a party saying he had just died. No one believed him until the news stopped regular broadcast to announce it. So upsetting. I miss that man.

[–]dhenn 22 points23 points ago

I was at Florida then too. Go gators!

[–]ajgator7 12 points13 points ago

Me too, upvotes for all!

[–]EnclaveLeo 2 points3 points ago

I can't afford to go to UF but my Aunt went there and I really like the school so....Go gators!

[–]whostolemycat 4 points5 points ago

Go Gators!

[–]flydeloreanfly 7 points8 points ago

Those "This is SportsCenter" commercials are the best.

[–]Epsilon123 14 points15 points ago

"Now I'm just gonna jam my thumb up it's butt hole"...

[–]SkinnyGenez 61 points62 points ago

Shortly after his death, I came across this commercial on youtube randomly one day. And I remember the top comment being something like:

"They had a commercial where he comes across the Tampa Bay Devil Rays mascot and wrestles it. Steve loses."

It was the saddest, most hilarious comment I've ever read on youtube.

[–]slaminsammy 40 points41 points ago

Being a Tampa resident and die hard Rays fan for the past 14 years, nobody ever loses to the Devil Rays.

[–]Dirtydirtdirt 12 points13 points ago

.... Where have you been dude, Rays are stomping ass all day everyday, we just had an 8 win streak.

[–]LocateJ 11 points12 points ago

The devil rays lose all the time. The rays however...

[–]flycrg 2 points3 points ago

and sadly just missed the playoffs

[–]ThatBassIsFishy 15 points16 points ago

Love these commercials. Favorite is the soccer one where the printer gives a soccer player a red card

[–]El_Mas_Chingon 40 points41 points ago

[–]iBleeedorange 35 points36 points ago

The recent John Clayton one is....amazing.

Here

[–]vuxa 3 points4 points ago

Probably one of my favorites of all time

[–]shrididdy 11 points12 points ago

SC commercials are one of the best sustained advertising campaigns going. It isn't even advertising anything anymore, it's basically just making people laugh and earning their pleasure.

[–]awswaim 5 points6 points ago

I'm not a big hockey fan, but this is one of my all time favorites.

[–]mdot 4 points5 points ago

"The Manning Boys" is still my all-time favorite...

Here

[–]newtothelyte 6 points7 points ago

The gif doesn't do it justice. The audio is what makes it.

[–]bludgerunner 6 points7 points ago

Ever since I was little, I was his biggest fan. My walls were plastered with pictures of him. Other kids played superheroes on the playground, and I went on Steve Irwin-esque adventures. Instead of cartoons and movies, I watched his several shows. I still know all the theme songs. I made elaborate plans to visit his zoo, I even planned to marry Bindi one day. (There was a bit of an age difference, but I would wait, just to be considered Steve Irwin's son.) The amazing thing about Steve is that he didn't go looking for fame. He just did what he loved, and he loved it so much and did it so well, that fame came looking for him. His excitement about nature and his good nature made it almost impossible not to love him. The day he died was devastating for me. Even worse is now no one can mention him without the conversation becoming about his death. Seeing things like this make me smile so much, because it reminds me of the man as he was when he was alive. Thank you PhoneDojo. I have but one upvote to give, but it is yours. tl;dr- I freakin' love Steve Irwin and this post made my day.

[–]peaches01134 4 points5 points ago

R.I.P you brave bastard you.

[–]VonGator 8 points9 points ago

Perfect use of Albert. Go Gators! and RIP steve...

[–]RhinestoneTaco 2 points3 points ago

I've always liked that Albert wears a hat. A hat on an actual alligator would not work well.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

Still the best Sportscenter commercial.

[–]KingNick 7 points8 points ago

Still saddening :,(

Go Gators :(

[–]Carlo_The_Magno 3 points4 points ago

[–]chrzansm 3 points4 points ago

Well, I wish I could be the first person to say "Go Gators!", but instead I'll just say RIP.

What a great fucking man.

[–]Shagoosty 2 points3 points ago

RIP Steve; you're the reason I care about nature. Always put sometime back where you found it (unless you're wrestling it). Actually, you kindof gave me mixed messages as a kid.

[–]pigeonnosepete 2 points3 points ago

I'm gonna jam my thumb right up it's ass, that should really piss it off..

[–]sincerelyanonymus -1 points0 points ago

I love this guy! I can't believe he's gone and I still can't imagine this world without him. I truly believe Discovery Channel went south after Steve's passing.

[–]ecj 1 point2 points ago

Is that John Anderson being held back by Steve?

[–]Shamborsky 0 points1 point ago

Anyone else remember seeing this when it aired? I think it was a superbowl commercial or something, but I actually remember seeing this many years ago. So much respect for that man.

[–]JRLindgren22 1 point2 points ago

Nothing like Sportscenter commercials

[–]h4rlotsghost 0 points1 point ago

One of the best SC commercials all time.

[–]enginedriver -1 points0 points ago

Oh I miss steve:( I went to Australia zoo a year or two after he died and they still had all the video screens of him talking. He really was amazing. I hope his daughter turns out just like him.

[–]ImBored_YoureAmorous -1 points0 points ago

My respect for him just went up that much more. I haven't laughed out loud all day!

[–]CraiggyD 1 point2 points ago

[–]SpankedZombie 1 point2 points ago

I actually miss that man quite a bit. A TV channel here in Sweden show his programmes regularly, and I find it really fucking difficult watching them. He made me interested in nature and is one of the few celebrity deaths that made me cry. Rest in peace, you magnificent aussie.
