Reminds me of the cover of the City and Colour album

[–]Whodini 117 points118 points ago

That's because it is. With the people photoshopped out.

[–]Ninja752 112 points113 points ago

Actually, one of his friend painted it because of the copyright.

[–]Whodini 53 points54 points ago

I stand corrected.

[–]FlashofColour 41 points42 points ago

I saw him talk about the cover and he said he was in a plane and the picture showed up in a magazine he was looking at.

[–]johnnykine 97 points98 points ago

Upvotes for everyone because your are fellow fans of Mr. Green. Such a talented man.

[–]Esteam 67 points68 points ago

Such a Grand Optimist.

[–]GtrplayerII 59 points60 points ago

He's actually the world's poor pessimist...Then there was his father, he's always looking on the bright side, saying things like "Son, life just ain,t that hard".

[–]new_plague 13 points14 points ago

So I guess he takes after his mother?

[–]d_spaceley1 14 points15 points ago

cool, now i have to listen to this Edit: forgot to mention this is my favorite song of all time

[–]Musickmann 2 points3 points ago

SOOOO GOOOOD

[–]seanseanseanh 7 points8 points ago

He's such a Fragile Bird, that Dallas Green.

[–]Kylrjo 12 points13 points ago

As a film student, and being from his home town, I helped as a production assistant on the fragile bird music video.. I was basically the bitch but I got to work with Dallas Green. He is awesome, I have to admit. Nice to see fellow redditors respect him as a musician. That being said, Alexisonfire is coming back for another tour!

EDIT: Oh and on a side note the dead bird in the video is real.. I should know I picked it up thinking it was a set prop.. I was disgusted.

[–]seanseanseanh 3 points4 points ago

As a film student myself, I'm incredibly jealous of you. INCREDIBLY.

[–]SlightlySlizzed 3 points4 points ago

I met him once and found out why he never plays Missing live (after trying to find my favorite song on youtube I hear someone say "Play Missing" and he just kind of says "I don't play that song live" and went on really quick which I thought was odd. So when I met him I thought we should ask him. He actually teared up telling me and my friends why.

[–]El_Thunder_Cunto 2 points3 points ago

I got to meet for an all too brief moment at Sasquatch! Music Festival in 2011. Dallas has been my hero since the early days of Alexisonfire and when I told him that he said he was genuinely excited for me to meet my idol. TL;DR Dallas Green= a great guy

[–]Stratocaster89 0 points1 point ago

Sit back down.

[–]truthpooper -1 points0 points ago

I feel like it is also the most re-posted photo in the world.

[–]itsagirlonreddit -1 points0 points ago

KNEW IT!

[–]DoARoll 59 points60 points ago

Came here to see if someone mentioned this, was not disappointed. If you haven't already listened to "Little Hell" (Album) by City and Colour, you're missing out.

[–]hunkacheese 14 points15 points ago

"Northern Wind" is glorious as well.

[–]Goatpunching 5 points6 points ago

The whole record is amazing. I wasn't sure of a couple of songs now I have to listen to it all in order.

[–]Throwee 10 points11 points ago

Yup, Can't stop listening to little hell

[–]dannymalooly 8 points9 points ago

Will we get out?

[–]Goatpunching 3 points4 points ago

Will we get out of this little hell.

[–]cook94j 5 points6 points ago

City & Colour is amazing.

He is the one artist that has consistently put out amazing music throughout his three albums.

[–]gigglefarting 2 points3 points ago

I'm so glad I got to see him at Bonnarroo, and I'm also really glad I found the Little Hell vinyl at a record store in Charlotte months ago. It wasn't cheap (being imported from Canada and all), but it was worth it.

[–]brendananananaykroyd 0 points1 point ago

aha i was listening to bring me your love on itunes when i saw this

[–]OMEGACY 11 points12 points ago

Such a good album

[–]leahlilac 7 points8 points ago

Exactly what I was thinking. I held the cover up to the screen to confirm my suspicions.

[–]ApocalypseTroop 3 points4 points ago

I would love if Dallas Green did an AMA.

[–]camelCase47 2 points3 points ago

I thought the post was in regards of the Little Hell album as well.

[–]bruik1 2 points3 points ago

I am literally listening to this album right now

[–]bernanabears 1 point2 points ago

It is, Dallas saw it in an airplane magazine and he loved how it looked so he asked his friend to paint it

[–]Man_Dinga 2 points3 points ago

Little Hell is a great album, but this is also a great live concert. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p0rOaUf9pQ

[–]RugerRedhawk 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of this exact same image I saw here a couple of weeks ago.

[–]throwaway021280 0 points1 point ago

was just about to say that!

[–]maileykaye 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say that! I knew I shouldn't have read the comments!

[–]MistaPea 0 points1 point ago

Only read the title as I recognised the picture due to Little Hell

[–]shanoxilt 0 points1 point ago

[–]Hedryn 0 points1 point ago

Came here to say this. Wasn't disappointed.

[–]DeathbyCheerios 0 points1 point ago

I literally came to post just that. Get out of my head Charles

[–]SoMuchDrift 1 point2 points ago

YES! noticed right away. Great album.

[–]backspacerr 0 points1 point ago

Exactly what I thought. OH HEY DALLAS GREEN.

[–]CloudCaptain 0 points1 point ago

Thought the exact same thing. Love C&C.

[–]ryanfortehluls 0 points1 point ago

My favourite musician ever.

[–]sidewalks 0 points1 point ago

Came heretomake sure this was top comment...not disappointed.

[–]UofMtigers2014 28 points29 points ago

This doesn't look like porn.

[–]WilliamRagerKennedy 2 points3 points ago

I was very confused and very disappointed.

[–]nikolifish 0 points1 point ago

You weren't born in the 80s. This is exactly what spice channel and playboy looked like when I was 10

[–]horse_you_rode_in_on 94 points95 points ago

We Canadians have a very special affection for Dutch tulips.

In the fall of 1940, their Princess Juliana and her two daughters were smuggled out of the Netherlands to Halifax in order to escape the possibility of being captured by the invading Nazis. The Canadian government set her up in Ottawa's Government House so that she could take control of a government-in-exile until the end of the war if the need arose.

Plot twist: in 1942, Juliana got pregnant. To ensure her Dutch citizenship, a maternity ward of Ottawa Civic Hospital was temporarily declared to be extraterritorial by the Canadian government, which meant that the Princess would derive her citizenship from her mother only, thus making her solely Dutch. On 19 January 1943 the flag of the Netherlands flew on Parliament's Peace Tower and Princess Margriet was born a Dutch citizen.

Once the war ended, the people of the Netherlands sent us a lot of really nice things in thanks, but the most impressive gift was 100,000 tulip bulbs, given in gratitude both for the pivotal involvement of Canadian troops in the liberation of the Netherlands and the safe-haven that we had offered to the Dutch royal family.

They still send us thousands of bulbs every year, without fail. We use them to throw a huge party!

[–]Deathleach 22 points23 points ago

As a Dutchman I've never heard this story. That's actually really interesting.

[–]Jllle 10 points11 points ago

The Dutch also had to eat tulip bulbs in the last year of the war, because food was so scarce. Those things are not good for you.

[–]junkfood66 10 points11 points ago

Hush. We live.

[–]IronicallyFunny 10 points11 points ago

But at what cost, Sjaak? At what cost?

[–]JustCallMeBen 2 points3 points ago

Hush Kees, have another special cupcake...

[–]junkfood66 1 point2 points ago

I smiled at this, it felt ironic.

Then I saw your username. What sorcery is this?

[–]mungd 6 points7 points ago

The above post references the artist Dallas Green of City and Colour... he is a Canadian and that picture is his most recent album cover. Silly awesome Canadians.

[–]asm1th 9 points10 points ago

We throw a similar party here in Holland, MI. http://www.tuliptime.com/

[–]amuses 2 points3 points ago

Upvote for being from my home town. Tulip Time (more specifically: junk wagons) is about the only thing I miss from there.

[–]dutchfriese 0 points1 point ago

Same thing happens in Dutch populated Pella, IA - www.pellatuliptime.com

[–]horsepoop 3 points4 points ago

this is pretty awesome

[–]Tim_Buk2 3 points4 points ago

Also, after the war, the Canadian embassy in The Hague was given top choice of available grand mansions to have as the ambassador's residence and they chose a beautiful house in Wassenaar. Source: I played tennis there a few months ago.

[–]TheGuineaPig21 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, it's super nice. And very big. I've got family living quite near it.

[–]Trusstopher 3 points4 points ago

Not sure if it is true, but when I last heard this story it included the fact that during the time period that it was technically Dutch soil, the Dutch flag was flown above the building and this is the only time in history any flag besides that of the Canadian's has flown there.

[–]horse_you_rode_in_on 4 points5 points ago

The story is more poetic that way, but since Dutch nationality law is based primarily on the principle of jus sanguinis it wasn't necessary to make the ward Dutch territory. The trick was that since Canada uses jus soli for citizenship, we had to disclaim the territory temporarily so that Margriet would not, by virtue of birth on Canadian soil, also become a Canadian citizen.

[–]AJnsm 2 points3 points ago

When I was in highschool, I biked past this huge statue everyday that says: Amsterdam thanks the Canadians :)

[–]silencer47 1 point2 points ago

You know if you loosend certain laws we could send you some ''different'' more usefull plants. Tulips are nice and all but they get a little stale after 60 years...

[–]ivebeenhereallsummer 1 point2 points ago

Did the hospital staff have to show their passports before entering the ward? Were any of the other babies born in the ward during this time considered Dutch citizens?

[–]johnny_kickass 18 points19 points ago

Defrag complete

[–]jakeblues94 18 points19 points ago

Didn't the Dutch already figure out that a tulip based economy doesn't work.

[–]NSFW_PORN_ONLY[S] 13 points14 points ago

[–]mewdotkai 5 points6 points ago

FUCK READ

[–]seodoth 1 point2 points ago

wow awesome thanks!

[–]lasyke3 3 points4 points ago

Interestingly on an old LSAT there was a short reading piece that argued that it was not in fact a bubble, if I can find it I'll post it.

EDIT: Here it is: "In economics, the term "speculative bubble" refers to a large upward move in an asset's price driven not by the asset's fundamentals — that is, by the earnings derivable from the asset — but rather by mere speculation that someone else will be willing to pay a higher price for it. The price increase is then followed by a dramatic decline in price, due to a loss in confidence that the price will continue to rise, and the "bubble" is said to have burst. According to Charles Mackay's classic nineteenth-century account, the seventeenth-century Dutch tulip market provides an example of a speculative bubble. But the economist Peter Garber challenges Mackay's view, arguing that there is no evidence that the Dutch tulip market really involved a speculative bubble.

By the seventeenth century, the Netherlands had become a center of cultivation and development of new tulip varieties, and a market had developed in which rare varieties of bulbs sold at high prices. For example, a Semper Augustus bulb sold in 1625 for an amount of gold worth about U.S. $11,000 in 1999. Common bulb varieties, on the other hand, sold for very low prices. According to Mackay, by 1636 rapid price rises attracted speculators, and prices of many varieties surged upward from November 1636 through January 1637. Mackay further states that in February 1637 prices suddenly collapsed; bulbs could not be sold at 10 percent of their peak values. By 1739, the prices of all the most prized kinds of bulbs had fallen to no more than one two-hundredth of 1 percent of Semper Augustus's peak price.

Garber acknowledges that bulb prices increased dramatically from 1636 to 1637 and eventually reached very low levels. But he argues that this episode should not be described as a speculative bubble, for the increase and eventual decline in bulb prices can be explained in terms of the fundamentals. Garber argues that a standard pricing pattern occurs for new varieties of flowers. When a particularly prized variety is developed, its original bulb sells for a high price. Thus, the dramatic rise in the price of some original tulip bulbs could have resulted as tulips in general, and certain varieties in particular, became fashionable. However, as the prized bulbs become more readily available through reproduction from the original bulb, their price falls rapidly; after less than 30 years, bulbs sell at reproduction cost. But this does not mean that the high prices of original bulbs are irrational, for earnings derivable from the millions of bulbs descendent from the original bulbs can be very high, even if each individual descendent bulb commands a very low price. Given that an original bulb can generate a reasonable return on investment even if the price of descendent bulbs decreases dramatically, a rapid rise and eventual fall of tulip bulb prices need not indicate a speculative bubble."

I searched tulip fields and in 1.047 seconds got this

This why every new person I bring to reddit, I threaten about using the search bar. Search, then post...its that easy

[–]sargassum 1 point2 points ago

My butt hurts too, bro. My butt hurts too.

[–]GreenBeast415 7 points8 points ago

I just figured out where City And Colour got their album cover from....

[–]USteppin 3 points4 points ago

Ya that's the first thing I thought when I saw this thumbnail =P

[–]bdh008 3 points4 points ago

So does it look like that for long periods of time? Or do they just all die off within a week?

[–]nbshark 5 points6 points ago

The flowers that are not sold/used are still sometimes used in parade cars or pieces of art. Check out the sculptures they make with it. The flowers are plucked and stuck as a decoration all over the sculptures surfaces. So yes, the parade cars are in fact made out of flowers. Click the pictures to enlarge.

[–]mastertje 0 points1 point ago

Wow. Wait. Wow.

[–]RacerDKB 6 points7 points ago

Being from The Netherlands and growing up seeing these tulip fields all the time when driving, I'd say the fields look like this from May until June, every year.

Then they get 'harvested' (lack of a better translation) in July and sold in stores here, or shipped throughout the world.

[–]Jllle 3 points4 points ago

Mostly shipped to other countries, in fact.

[–]MrFrankly 3 points4 points ago

Only for a short while. In most cases the farmer grows tulips for the bulb. To allow the bulb to grow as big as possible the flower is taken off the plant quite soon after it blooms.

That is most likely what happened to the field with white tulips you see on the picture. Only the stem is and bulb is left, the flower has been taken off.

[–]yonthickie 1 point2 points ago

In my area of England, Holland in Lincolnshire, the flower heads are the things stuck all over floats to make a parade- Spalding's tulip Festival, not so many fields of tulips nowadays though- now more rape and sugar beet which don't make such a great display.

[–]aaipod 1 point2 points ago

Alkmaar is mostly known for their HUGE cheese festival. It is amazing!

A town known for cheese&flowers... If only chocolate or bacon was also on that list!
