Why would you do that

[–]sinisterlefty 11 points12 points ago

karma

[–]Doxep 3 points4 points ago

You don't actually need to do that for karma..

[–]Evi1M4chine 1 point2 points ago

Same reason people smite themselves.

Masochism and stupidity.

[–]Baddiekins 34 points35 points ago

You shouldn't be allowed to own a computer.

[–]prrifth 16 points17 points ago

Do you not know that you can just hold the power button in for four seconds?

[–]Doxep 6 points7 points ago

Four seconds? It takes much much less to shut down correctly...

On Windows, just an example:

Win + D (shows desktop) Alt + F4 (pops up shut down dialog box) Enter (OK)

This can be done in a fraction of a second.

[–]Azareus 7 points8 points ago

escape + ctrl -> right-arrow -> enter.

shut down, and done. Even quicker. right arrow twice if you want to hibernate.

[–]Doxep 1 point2 points ago

I'm sorry, I'm on win7 and I couldn't reply this. Do I have to press Shift + Escape and the right arrow?

[–]Azareus 0 points1 point ago

err, it's not shift, but ctrl. it opens the start menu, so you can do it with the simple win key too, I've gotten too used to the ctrl+esc.

[–]Doxep 0 points1 point ago

Great, TIL. Thank you!

[–]cw5202 0 points1 point ago

Just hitting the windows key should pull up the start menu.

Windows key, right arrow, enter should shutdown. (at least with Windows 7)

[–]Fartmatic 1 point2 points ago

Win + D (shows desktop)

I think this is literally the first time I've intentionally pressed the windows key.

Edit: Just pressed win+tab like 50 times, whhoooaaaaa

[–]Doxep 3 points4 points ago

Seriously, the Windows key is AWESOME.

How do you open My Computer? Go on the desktop, find the icon, double click? Pfft. Just press Win + E.

And the "Run" dialog? Win + R.

If you're on Win 7 with aero, press Win + Tab for loads of fun.

[–]no_egrets 0 points1 point ago

Win-E is one I always fucking forget. By most measures I'm a poweruser, but I never remember Win-fucking-E.

[–]Doxep 1 point2 points ago

It is absolutely great. And Win Tab makes me flip shit.

[–]Milkthistle38 0 points1 point ago

or just disable the windows key like me and never accidentally alt tab out of your favorite full screen experience!

[–]Doxep 1 point2 points ago

I used to play a MMORPG called Prisonserver, it crashed if you pressed the Win key. So yeah, I found a registry hack and disabled it... But when I stopped playing I started learning about the magic of the win key!

[–]Milkthistle38 0 points1 point ago

it does seem quite magical

[–]andytheshoeshine 0 points1 point ago

Win+# for the number of the app in your taskbar

[–]netraven5000 0 points1 point ago

Ten.

[–]djbriandamage 1 point2 points ago

I'm a fan of win+R, shutdown -t 0, enter

add -r to reboot instead of power down

[–]thefool_onthehill 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes you can just press the power button once and it'll shut down properly. So it would take even less effort to shut it down right.

[–]akumadiavolo 11 points12 points ago

I don't think the police care if you do that.

[–]madhi19 0 points1 point ago

Well if your whole system encrypted with something really solid the bastards will need to send it to Fort Meade to break it.

[–]deja-vu-comment 8 points9 points ago

Toonces, look out!

.

[–]rawrc 1 point2 points ago

WATCH OUT FOR THAT CLIFF!!

KABOOM

[–]NewToLT 4 points5 points ago

Something broke early on in my computer's life, and now the only way I can turn it off is via the button (even for restarts). It feels more like euthanasia than anything.

[–]TheDoc85 6 points7 points ago

It might be possessed if you can't turn it off by unplugging it.

[–]plutPWNium 0 points1 point ago

Must be hard on your psu

[–]JustARandomGuy95 1 point2 points ago

This kills the PC.

[–]nottaprodigy 4 points5 points ago

Toonces the driving cat!

[–]Evi1M4chine 0 points1 point ago

Have fun with the loss of the cached yet-to-be-written data, corruption of the whole file where a partial write happened, and file system corruption if you’re unlucky.

And you deserved it.

[–]genomeAnarchist 0 points1 point ago

You're an awful person.

[–]semple -1 points0 points ago

Just reminded me of one of my favourite music videos. Thank you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhaRkWfaq10
