[–]MereMaloot 14 points15 points ago

Between this pic and Pascal on Tangled, how am I supposed to not get a chameleon for my kids? seriously. look at their wittle bitty feet!

[–]Froggy_hop 25 points26 points ago

They're notoriously hard to take care of, and you have to feed it crickets, which are smelly and noisy and gross. Plus they're not all that affectionate, and kids'll get tired of them within days that's why.

[–]MereMaloot 3 points4 points ago

The smell is my biggest deterrent! I had a friend in college who owned a lizard- when it pooped I thought I would die from the smell.

[–]duckduckmooses 4 points5 points ago

The hundreds of dollars a proper setup cost could be put to better use. Your kids will be tired of a chameleon after a couple of days.

Tangled was a HORRIBLE movie to base owning a chameleon off of. They cannot be held and handled like that, and excessive handling can be fatally stressful. Kids are FAR too hands on.

They need to be fed live bugs. Crickets, worms, even pinkie mice when they reach the proper age/size. A lot of people can't handle that in itself. Then, unless you're going to the pet shop multiple times per week, you'll have to keep the crickets in something else. My pet shop sells crickets at $12 for 200, 50 of which are set aside for my chameleon.

The setup is expensive and a lot of research must be done to set it up with the correct components. The screen terrarium, lights, heat lamps, vines, leaves. Then the cage has to be cleaned weekly-- but here's where I disagree. The smell is NOT bad unless you go for weeks without cleaning. I use paper towel as a substrate-- dirt and whatnot gets too smelly. Then you have to mist them a few times a day...

You have to really love reptiles to keep them. They're a large investment, and for the most part they just sit there in their terrarium looking pretty. They aren't a pet for children. They don't want the handling and the loud noises.

If you want a pet, get a cat or a puppy that they can actually play with. Not a chameleon that they aren't allowed to touch.

[–]asmel 1 point2 points ago

Why is no one mentioning the vitamin powder that the feeder insects need to be dusted in?

[–]duckduckmooses 0 points1 point ago

They don't necessarily need to be dusted. I don't dust mine, as my crickets are gut loaded with feed and calcium.

She has full-spectrum lighting to provide vitamin D.

There are different ways of doing the little things, so that's why I don't include it. Dusting crickets is difficult to do, and most of the dusting just falls off.

With my crested geckos and leachie, I mix it into the CGD (powdered food mix). My leopard geckos will lick calcium straight from a dish.

[–]38dollars 4 points5 points ago

I have a veiled chameleon, and he's too great! Yeah, they can be private assholes sometimes but such strange creatures to have in your life.

Probably a pretty cool "responsibility tool" for kids, because there is a lot of upkeep involved, but its all relatively easy stuff.

And you don't have to feed them crickets, they like a varied diet. My bud likes meal worms more than anything, but if they get away from him in the cage I may find a black beetle or two the next month.

[–]M0nk3ys0ck 1 point2 points ago

Be careful with those meal worms. They can eat through stomach lining. And it might grow a watermelon in your cham's tummy.

[–]duckduckmooses 0 points1 point ago

  1. They are not a pet for kids. They shouldn't be handled often, and the upkeep is NOT easy. Things have to be maintained. Temperature and humidity, substrate, cleanliness, proper feeding.

  2. Meal worms aren't good for your chameleon. They're hard to digest. Consider wax worms and super worms, but crickets should be the main diet.

[–]38dollars 0 points1 point ago

I've had mine for a few years, and our vet says he's in excellent condition. The meal worms I get from both local pet stores in my town are actually labeled as super worms, so weird. When we can get our hands on silk worms, he enjoys them. As I said the upkeep is relatively easy. Once you get into a routine, it's all very simple stuff, it's just about getting used to it and knowing your environment and their's. It is definitely still a good "responsibility tool" for kids when it comes to spray downs, feed times, and such.

[–]Oryanna -1 points0 points ago

I got a chameleon when I was about 11 years old. Got it from a regular pet store. I loved it, but make sure your kids aren't squeamish. They recommended that you pull off one of the large back legs of the crickets before you feed it to the chameleon. So, I couldn't just dump it in the cage and leave. I had to dismember a live cricket. Also, cleaning the cage was never fun. Reptiles stink. But darn it, if that thing wasn't my best friend. He would just hang out with me no matter what I was doing.

KARMA KARMA KARMA KARMA KARMA CHAMELEON!

[–]beargarebear 5 points6 points ago

The funny little hands get me every time!

[–]Titties 2 points3 points ago

Have you ever held one? Those little hands are pretty damn strong.

[–]yummywords 0 points1 point ago

they are! Chameleons in general are way more solid and secure than they seem when you're actually holding one. I thought they always looked like they were just about to fall off everything all the time but they're actually really well balanced.

[–]asmel 0 points1 point ago

They have exceptional grip strength. They are specifically evolved that way....

[–]afihavok 0 points1 point ago

One is about to mount another.

[–]pear22 0 points1 point ago

[–]girlinthecity 3 points4 points ago

SO SWEET! The lil babies... aww.

[–]PullOnMyToe 12 points13 points ago

My little chameleon was once as nice as this. Now she hates me and gets pissed off when I go near her.

[–]noodles686 1 point2 points ago

Mine was the exact same way!! So cute and friendly as a baby and then hated anything that got to close once it got older. I'm just trying to feed you!! Jerk.

[–]asmel 0 points1 point ago

Veilds (especially males) are supposed to be aggressive; it's a normal trait. You wouldn't try to keep a grizzly bear as a pet and expect it to be friendly and cuddly.

[–]TheThingToSay 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of the Enterprise episode where Archer becomes obsessed with saving the reptilian Zindi babies lol.

At first glance at the thumbnail, I thought it was marijuana plants. I know im not the only one.

Tip: If you find a small image, drag it in to Google Image search and you will more than likely be given a link to a hi-res version.

I love Chameleons, they look so indifferent to everything.

[–]TheBRAD27 0 points1 point ago

I counted 8. Is there any hidden ones or what?

[–]frenchness 1 point2 points ago

I had one when I was a teenager. DO NOT PUT A MIRROR IN FRONT OF IT WHILE HOLDING IT!!! Unless finger rape is your thing.

[–]MsCrazyPants70 0 points1 point ago

Toooooo funny!!! Well, at least it needed to see its own species to get excited. My iguana tried to mate with everything...a cat, a dog, a rock, several people's legs, and finally it had a flannel it stole as a long-term girlfriend. It didn't need to see another iguana to get it on.

[–]asmel 0 points1 point ago

Bullshit.

[–]tigerpolis 0 points1 point ago

I could swear it was a fat lady posing in an english garden, looking at that thumbnail....

[–]Joy2DaHova 0 points1 point ago

Damn Geico Gecko has been busy!

[–]IHaveAStory 1 point2 points ago

It had always been a joke between me and my friends, what if lizards take over the world? We would laugh about our different lizard pets in various rebel roles and then go grab some beers and chuckle anytime we thought of our little gecko brandishing a gun.

Then one night I noticed something different, my two geckos seemed dangerous, poised for something. I laughed it off and went to bed. I could not sleep though, thoughts of lizards trying to choke me out while I slept kept me awake. Finally I drifted off to sleep only to be woken a few short hours later by my phone going off. It was a FaceTime request from a friend of mine who owned a large iguana. "My iguana's missing!" She cried. Chills ran up my spine, I laughed it off, "I'll be right over to help you find him" I said. I looked into my cage on the way out of my room, both little guys were still there, still super cute, but I could not get past the fact that they were waiting. I decided to take them with me, they looked happy with this and began acting their normal selves again. Relieved I drove over to Susan's, confidant that Ed was just hiding under a couch somewhere.

Now three years later I write to tell you this, the lizards are not such bad masters. They are really good about changing my bedding and feeding and watering me. The change to a vegetarian diet was hard but they made it clear they were not going to feed us meat. We are let out to harvest grubs and plants for their meals but escape is not a possibility, it seems that every lizard in the world has banded together here in SE Washington. There were thousands of people who fought the swarms here but they were all dispatched, we spent weeks digging trenches to bury the dead in. I never could understand how anyone fought back, Susan and I never had a chance to even think of retaliation against the Armada of Aww.

[–]fligs 0 points1 point ago

awesome

[–]bonedead 0 points1 point ago

Isn't an armada like, boats?

[–]Digg1 1 point2 points ago

Somma dem is fucking

[–]CptOblivion 0 points1 point ago

The awwmada.

[–]juice_box_hero 0 points1 point ago

I have owned a couple of veiled chameleons and I absolutely adored them but I didn't have Internet back then and not enough knowledge and the pet store clearly wasn't selling captive bred ones which means many of them die. They were difficult to care for and needed a drip-water system for drinking which I didn't realize the first time around. I was devastated to lose Otis and I even took him to the vet to try to save him but it didn't work :( Also. Crickets smell yucky and they should be fed scrambled eggs and such. Otherwise you're basically feeding your reptile am exoskeleton with little nutritional value. Very cute picture. I wish I could raise adorable little chameleons!!

[–]asmel 0 points1 point ago

One of my chameleons hurt his leg and I took him to the ER. As in the actual fucking ER at the hospital. My mom worked there and said I could bring him. They x-rayed his leg, then needed to do a comparison x-ray on a non injured leg. He had the ER doc, and orthopedic specialist, and three nurses "treating" him. They splinted his leg with a coffee stirrer.

[–]juice_box_hero 0 points1 point ago

Awww. That's adorable. I took mine to a special vet that treats exotic animals. He was already too ill though. I cried so hard. Had to euthanize him :( still makes me sad thinking about it

[–]TechTwista 0 points1 point ago

This made me sad. I had a veiled chameleon named Chumley, he died only two months old because he was already sick when we bought him. He was yellow and so cute.

[–]kyleniebob 1 point2 points ago

It's kinda sad how the Aww factor of this photo is diminished by the fact that, to the middle school brain (which persists well into adulthood), it looks like two of them are fucking.
