Worst cocktail ever.

[–]Farisr9k 20 points21 points ago

Well, it'll definitely alter your current state.

[–]IDeclareShenanigans 13 points14 points ago

Yeah, it ends it.

[–]EverySingleDay 2 points3 points ago

This bolt is hurting my digestive tract.

[–]8GB 1 point2 points ago

But dude, 100% Maple!

[–]randumname 2 points3 points ago

Meh, I've had people order worse when I was bartender...I mean, really, Jagerbombs?

[–]mrshrimp 0 points1 point ago

You just gotta figure out a way to swallow that damn ping pong ball

[–]themcp 0 points1 point ago

They said it's a liquid now.

[–]sleepyhead12 0 points1 point ago

Yeah honey is disgusting.

[–]Lochcelious 0 points1 point ago

Mmm, Jack Daniels Honey... Much better than regular JD in my opinion.

[–]NoWhiskeyForOldMen 1 point2 points ago

This one's better: http://i.imgur.com/Ei1Pm.png

[–]kungfu_kickass 2 points3 points ago

Man. Of course the whole thing is pretty cool but I'm really surprised that the solid objects were put in after all of the liquids were in. I thought they'd be put in in layers with their respective liquids.

TIL a die (or dice) has the same density as milk.. Who knew?

edit: To clarify, it's not the same density, just that it is less dense than the maple syrup below and not heavy enough to break the surface tension.

[–]8GB 23 points24 points ago

And there I was looking for dye.

Now that I've spelt it out I feel like a silly.

[–]GiPwner 3 points4 points ago

I had no idea at first too i was like is this "dye" miss spelled or something?

[–]Spaghe-t 21 points22 points ago

Miss Spelled

We have this year's spelling queen!!!

[–]GiPwner 2 points3 points ago

Haha

[–]whomperjawed 12 points13 points ago

I thought it was a sadistic subliminal message.

[–]GiPwner 4 points5 points ago

This thought crossed my mind.

[–]bogeyegod 10 points11 points ago

I just thought it was telling me to die, and that wasn't very nice.

[–]mxemec 4 points5 points ago

Actually, you can see that the die is resting at the bottom of the milk, on top of the maple syrup, indicating that it is in fact a little more dense than milk.

[–]lydocia 2 points3 points ago

One die, more dice, for people who are confused.

[–]EverySingleDay 2 points3 points ago

It's more likely that a die is more dense than milk, but less dense than maple syrup.

[–]daviator88 0 points1 point ago

Probably whole milk.

[–]Spartus155 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't have the same density as milk. It is the surface tension of the maple syrup that overcomes the mass of the die that holds it up.

[–]GiPwner 0 points1 point ago

Yea, realised that after writing the comment but w/e.

[–]3065462 1 point2 points ago

Shit I had no idea wtf a die was.

[–]seriouslyfuck 17 points18 points ago

Why is water green?

[–]souporjoe 16 points17 points ago

So it stands out from the vegetable oil. It's just dyed.

[–]Mrs_Brisby 29 points30 points ago

The milk is also died.

[–]Fake-Empire 1 point2 points ago

I died laughing.

edit: Fake-Empire literally died. This is his family speaking.

[–]8GB 2 points3 points ago

Aliens.

[–]smufmcfudel 5 points6 points ago

Can someone give the density of each fluid?

[–]Thinks_Too_Logically 4 points5 points ago

I don't know what kind of lamp oil, but it seems that it's around .7 g/cm3 +- .05

Rubbing alcohol: 0.786 g/cm3 to .86 g/cm3 (depending on amount of water)

Vegetable oil*: ~.9 g/cm3

Water: 1 g/cm3

Dish soap*: ~1.03 g/cm3

Milk*: ~1.05 g/cm3 (depends on temperature and type of milk)

Maple Syrup: 1.3 g/cm3

Corn Syrup*: I have sources from 1.38 to 1.33 g/cm3

Honey: 1.36 g/cm3 (can probably vary)

*unsure/assumed/poor source

[–]Haasts_Eagle 5 points6 points ago

I made a list too, but was slower than you. To help out I made a table. I used a mixture of your figures and my figures. (note for those interested: 1ml of water = 1 gram = 1cm3 in volume. Isn't the metric system nifty?)

Substance Weight per cm3
Lamp oil ~.7g
Rubbing alcohol 0.78g - .86g
Vegetable oil 0.91g
Water 1.00g
Dish soap 1.03g
Milk 1.05g
Maple syrup 1.33g
Corn syrup 1.38g
Honey 1.42g

Want some more?

Substance Weight per cm3
Body fat 0.92g
Blood 1.04g
The sun 1.40g
Iron 7.89g
Gold 19.30g
Neutron star 1,000,000,000,000,000,000g (1018g)
also, as requested by my father...

[–]Horaenaut 1 point2 points ago

Honey is more dense than the average density of the Sun? Wow. Tomorrow, I will be annoying someone at breakfast with this information.

[–]terranex 5 points6 points ago

Would the bolt float on Mercury?

[–]EverySingleDay 15 points16 points ago

If you mean the element mercury, very likely yes.

Unless you meant the planet, which is what you typed.

Or the god.

[–]starlinguk 1 point2 points ago

I'm sure it would float on the god, if he let it.

[–]mxemec 1 point2 points ago

That's a great question. Mercury has a density of about 13.5 g/ml at standard conditions. The density of mild steel is about 7.8 g/ml so, yes, it would probably float. The surface of most bolts are given a coating of zing galvanization, but that would presumably not add the necessary ~6 g/ml to the overall density in order to sink it.

[–]ChickenPotPi 0 points1 point ago

you can walk on mercury hypothetically (please don't)

[–]miamistu 0 points1 point ago

I guess so, seeing as cannonballs do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm5D47nG9k4

CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUG

[–]WarPhalange 27 points28 points ago

Did they carefully pour that stuff in one at a time or just dump that shit together and wait a day or two for it to separate?

[–]MuggyFuzzball 12 points13 points ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CDkJuo_LYs

Credit to MarshMeloDee for finding the video

[–]StackOfFiveMarmots 3 points4 points ago

They carefully poured it. I don't think it'd separate so neatly if it had been all mixed up.

[–]octochan 0 points1 point ago

I'm no physicist but I don't think they used a centrifuges Typically the centrifuge tubes are tiny and tapered at the end (to collect precipitating solids), and I can't imagine it would be the best technique layers > 2 or 3. Could be done in a special made centrifuge, but I doubt it.

[–]alahos 0 points1 point ago

Nope, some of those would stay mixed due to polarity affinities.

[–]WarPhalange -1 points0 points ago

Like octachan pointed out, most centrifuges are for test tubes or even smaller sizes (my friend would often use an ultracentrifuge). And of course that thing is just huge.

[–]Tanger68 3 points4 points ago

Perhaps they layered it like bartenders do with cocktails. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layered_drink

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 2 points3 points ago

I want to know this too, but instead of answer, people just downvote so you get hidden

[–]mxemec -1 points0 points ago

I would imagine both tactics were used.

[–]ldawg092498 1 point2 points ago

Works either way

[–]destiny24 -1 points0 points ago

Probably just used a machine to mix it.

[–]InfamousBacon 2 points3 points ago

Science is always blowing my mind.

[–]pihb 0 points1 point ago

With the ping pong ball, it should have been melted down. Boyancy is a factor.

[–]EverySingleDay 0 points1 point ago

I think it's understood that what makes a ping pong ball light is the pocket of gas inside. But yes, it sort of is a poor choice to suspend in a liquid; not many liquids are lighter than air...

[–]evilhankventure -1 points0 points ago

I think the reason the ping pong ball is there is to show how far it sinks, not that it floats. Do you really think they didn't realize buoyancy was a factor? that's the entire point of the picture.

[–]fazzah 1 point2 points ago

Get out of there Usain, you're not even a liquid!

[–]eak125 6 points7 points ago

I never knew that Pingpong balls, soda caps, beads, cherry tomatoes, dies, popcorn kernels and bolts were liquids...

[–]EverySingleDay 5 points6 points ago

They can be under the right circumstances.

Also, extra points for "dies".

[–]grrrrv 0 points1 point ago

Bad luck Brian finds foreign objects in his beverage.

Dies.

[–]Kaliko_Jak 0 points1 point ago

I think you meant dice not dies.

[–]strtolower 2 points3 points ago

DIE? ಠ_ಠ

[–]glasswing 0 points1 point ago

As in dice, not dye. Took me a moment as well.

[–]70000 1 point2 points ago

This is pretty cool

[–]Rangersfan5 0 points1 point ago

Edit- I thought they were talking about the liquid dye and spelled it wrong.

[–]lydocia 1 point2 points ago

Ha, I'm so easily amused. I just grinned at the thought of a popcorn kernel sinking right down to the corn syrup.

[–]vladutzmihai 0 points1 point ago

very educational

[–]guntfuddler -1 points0 points ago

Milk denser than dish soap? Really?

[–]EverySingleDay 0 points1 point ago

You probably shouldn't leave me in a room alone with this vial.

[–]Dauss 0 points1 point ago

All these liquids really make me thirsty for a tall glass of bolt, with a dash of ping pong ball.

[–]gadaspir 0 points1 point ago

Took me a minute to realize "die" was not "dye" mispelled

[–]Lilday 0 points1 point ago

BEADS?!

[–]schendsa 1 point2 points ago

BEES?

[–]Lilday 0 points1 point ago

Gobs not on board...

[–]toomuchtime11 0 points1 point ago

Five bucks says you won't chug it.

[–]ChickenPotPi 1 point2 points ago

Why soo much hate on the popcorn kernel? I mean seriously "die popcorn kernel" is a bit too harsh for a fucking popcorn kernel!

[–]alahos 1 point2 points ago

Popcorn kernel is already dead to me.

[–]ChickenPotPi 0 points1 point ago

:(

[–]kookoorooza 0 points1 point ago

Is that skim milk or 2%?

[–]fullcircle_bflo 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of something I saw on Mr. Wizard back in the 80s.

[–]_berserker_ 0 points1 point ago

That'll make one hell of a long island ice tea.

[–]talbotron22 0 points1 point ago

A lot of those components would still mix with each other. The current record for immiscible liquids is eight, pictured here. The description in the abstract for the paper reporting this reads:

Sir: Hildebrand has reported the construction of a system of seven liquid layers in stable equilibrium. This system consisted of heptane, aniline, water, perfluorokerosene, white phosphorus, gallium and mercury. The authors have discovered that an eight-layer system can be constructed by a suitable modification of the Hildebrand system. The eight layers (in order of increasing densities) are paraffin oil, silicone oil, water, aniline, perfluorodimethylcyclohexane, white phosphorus, gallium and mercury. After mixing, the eight layers reappear upon centrifuging. The system is stable indefinitely at 43 C. This temperature is required to melt the gallium and phosphorus.

I'm pretty sure this is a 7th grade science experiment. Source: I taught 7th grade science.

[–]alahos 0 points1 point ago

"I'm a bolt."
"No, you're just going through phases."

[–]Wax_Paper 0 points1 point ago

Well, the ping pong ball doesn't really fit with the illustrative concept of density as this diagram is trying to convey, but whateva... They should have just labeled it with "air" in parenthesis.

[–]Tincture_of_Man 0 points1 point ago

This is great. I'm working with students doing extractions, and they keep dumping the wrong layers.

[–]frameRAID 0 points1 point ago

I prefer little dish soap with my cherry tomatoes.

[–]0phiuchus 0 points1 point ago

now set it on fire!

[–]Cromodileadeuxtetes 0 points1 point ago

Now drink it!

[–]Mufajajajajaja 0 points1 point ago

I did this in 8th grade science with Vegetable oil, water, corn syrup, a rock, an icecube, a cork, and a grape. Fun times.

[–]nalgasdehule 0 points1 point ago

When I was a kid I would also throw in a lego brick, a raisin and a grape.

[–]Grey_Orange 0 points1 point ago

I remember seeing the EXACT SAME picture in a book from my childhood. Does anyone have any idea what this is from?

[–]brakstone91 0 points1 point ago

Shots shots shot shot shot shots everybody!

[–]brakstone91 0 points1 point ago

Science, bitch!

[–]Lamurias -1 points0 points ago

[–]3065462 0 points1 point ago

Milk and dish soap feel like they are out of order. I also wish they did something after milk before the syrups.

[–]Thinks_Too_Logically 1 point2 points ago

They probably seem out of order because dish soap has a higher viscosity than milk. However, viscosity and density are not related. For an extreme example, you could have molten lead (low viscosity), but it's way more dense than dish soap.

[–]evilhankventure 0 points1 point ago

How is milk denser than water though? I'd think the lipids would make it less dense.

[–]Thinks_Too_Logically 0 points1 point ago

Milk has more than just fat.

Components :

  • water
  • lactose
  • fat
  • protein
  • minerals
  • vitamins
  • other

[–]3065462 0 points1 point ago

Oh wow. That's actually very interesting TIL, thank you

[–]WeeSingInSillyville -2 points-1 points ago

Someone should put cereal pouring out over the top. Because if there is anything less dense then all liquids...its Trix.

[–]kindaallovertheplace -4 points-3 points ago

Where's poop?

[–]lydocia -1 points0 points ago

Or pee
