I work at the AGO so I thought I'd shed some light on a couple of things. The tree originally came from the Gardens of Versailles, and was actually salvaged by the artist after the tree had toppled during a bad storm some time back. IIRC, the artist carved into the tree that he worked on it from 2000-2004. Also, the guy in the pic is a security guard. Name's Ernie.

[–]thenewiBall 31 points32 points ago

Ernie seems nice, tell him the internet says hey

[–]hollythehermit 5 points6 points ago

That's amazing...thank you for the info, this artist has a singular talent! Tell Ernie keep up the good work! (You too!)

[–]Cylinsier 799 points800 points ago

That's pretty fucking cool.

[–]GreyCastle 230 points231 points ago

Cylinsier, poet.

[–]writhed 73 points74 points ago

[–]Arrrreeee 79 points80 points ago

I do not operate under the delusion that my life is the default template for everyone who was born in this country.

That line is fucking perfect.

[–]Etere 22 points23 points ago

Those last 2 paragraphs are exactly what most people don't seem to understand. A lot of people that I have talked to don't think they are part of the 99%. They think the 99% are just a bunch of freeloading welfare receiving mooches. What they don't realize is the 99% consists of millions of people that have worked hard their entire life, just to see their savings and 401K disappear because of a couple of greedy people. And given a chance they will work just as hard to try and gain even some of it back.

Sorry to turn this into a political thing but that letter made a whole hell of a lot of sense.

[–]chooklife 4 points5 points ago

The funny thing is, virtually all of the 99% are the global 10%.

[–]l3un1t 22 points23 points ago

If that's poetry, then I'm a cat.

[–]no_qtr 67 points68 points ago

Can I take a photo of you?

[–]SharksCantSwim 4 points5 points ago

If you do it quickly you can use it as your cake day post!

[–]no_qtr 40 points41 points ago

[–]InfamousBacon 34 points35 points ago

It's a tree in a tree.

[–]MookieActual[!] 88 points89 points ago

Surrounded by a room made of hundreds of its dead brothers and sisters.

[–]mofth 39 points40 points ago

You don't know that. They may have been grave enemies.

[–]LamesWeirdington 13 points14 points ago

I mean, that's pretty metal.

[–]Charybdiss 5 points6 points ago

We have to go deeper...

[–]JBenzy670 0 points1 point ago

Yo dawg

[–]faggotmoose 8 points9 points ago

Yeah, this may actually be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on reddit. On so many levels.

Pun not intended, but it is what it is.

[–]WET_VAGINA_FARTS 32 points33 points ago

this pic gives me wood.

[–]terriblecomments_guy 27 points28 points ago

Dat username...

[–]workover9000 18 points19 points ago

speaking of usernames..

[–]DeluxePineapple 10 points11 points ago

Pretty lowbrow, eh?

[–]DoucheAsaurus_ 0 points1 point ago

It may be lowbrow, but really who doesn't enjoy a nice wet vagina fart once in a while.

[–]wabeka 8 points9 points ago

My exact words when I saw this: "That's fucking awesome."

[–]fadedseaside 136 points137 points ago

That's a pretty fantastic gallery space, too. Anyone know where it is?

[–]osram888 172 points173 points ago

AGO in Toronto.

[–]kbproductionsllc 17 points18 points ago

These trees were in this gallery space so long, the shadows they cast resulted in a discoloration on the wood of the wall behind them. The tour guide made it sound like they were pretty much up against the back wall (not really pictured) for most of the time. The wood is definitely darker in areas about as wide as these trees.
Source: I was there last week

[–]sanswork 7 points8 points ago

There were other trees that were attached to the wall. There was a lot of them. i thought it was permanent. Source: I was there last year and a few weeks ago

[–]jedidiahwiebe 4 points5 points ago

I was there last year, and I thought the walls were of fir wood. Which like most wood becomes darker with exposure to light, not the other way around. How is this possible? Seems counter-intuitive? Curious...

[–]toomuchpork 2 points3 points ago

Wood like most dead items get bleached out in the sun. Like bones and leather

[–]dahnir 15 points16 points ago

Oh man, I saw this picture and recognized it, but couldn't put my finger on where I've seen it. Makes sense. Thanks.

[–]anthonyisgood 2 points3 points ago

Awesome! I live in Toronto and I've seen this picture many times... I had no idea it was here. Is it still in the gallery?

[–]TangoZippo 30 points31 points ago

Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto - frequently called the AGO.

That pictured wooden wing with the tall windows is called the Galleria Italia and was part of a recent expansion that opened in 2008. It's a pretty awesome building. Here's what it looks like from the outside: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/17/Still_shot_from_YEARS_AGO_movie_und1080.jpg

[–]Handro3 10 points11 points ago

You know, compared to what Gehry has done in the past, with the giant silver waves and really flashy forms, this seems quite conservative. I'd never seen a project of his use timber, and the effect is simply amazing! I wish he did more stuff like this.

[–]anaccountforreddit 4 points5 points ago

+1. only gehry I've ever seen that i even moderately liked, other than his house. funny how the timber construction works out like that.

[–]bicycle_samurai 3 points4 points ago

It's supposed to look like a giant canoe, apparently.

[–]perspectiveiskey 86 points87 points ago

I used to do this with carrots...

I'm genuinely impressed he did it with a giant tree..

[–]samx3i 44 points45 points ago

That is the only way to eat a carrot.

[–]fuckidk 26 points27 points ago

And every once in a while you have to nibble the end and say

"What's up doc?"

I also like canoes.

[–]passive_fist 16 points17 points ago

have you ever hollowed out a carrot to make a tiny canoe?

[–]fuckidk 6 points7 points ago

No I just really like canoes. A lot. Just thought I would share. I need to sub to r/canoe.

[–]tommygh 2 points3 points ago

My whole life feels like a lie.

[–]lejefferson 0 points1 point ago

I'm confused. How would you do this with a tree or a carrot? You can only see the layers when you slice into it horizontally so how would you remove all the rings without being able to see where the ring layers go????

[–]outloudkat 40 points41 points ago

That guy is looking the wrong way.

[–]RetroIntro 16 points17 points ago

Is he?

[–]oryes 24 points25 points ago

Yea

[–]mastrann 13 points14 points ago

K, just checking.

[–]ItsSpelledYeahNotYea 8 points9 points ago

[–]Gabcab 0 points1 point ago

Yay!!!

[–]It_does_get_in 0 points1 point ago

I gather people think he is looking for the trees, I tracked him down and he told me he was actually looking out for the lumberjacks.

[–]Lord_Bumberchute 179 points180 points ago

I wonder what people would think if you did that with a cow.

[–]ewat85 124 points125 points ago

Not exactly the same but have you ever seen a cannulated cow. It allows you to see into the cows stomach and watch their digestion. Here is a cow with one and here is a girl who has just put her hand inside the cows stomach. This is a better image of what you see.

[–]Porn_talent_scout 188 points189 points ago

Why in the fuck would you need a porthole into a cow stomach?

[–]Cmdr_Chipolte 180 points181 points ago

How the hell else would you see out when playing cow fort.

[–]Wood_Stock 31 points32 points ago

Down periscope!

[–]vteckickedin 34 points35 points ago

Helmsman, udders to full right!

[–]mmclain 2 points3 points ago

Have all compartments rigged for silent mooing

[–]darkdasky 4 points5 points ago

And I thought they smelt bad, on the outside...

[–]3dognightinacathouse 17 points18 points ago

These cows are mainly used when other cows are sick. Cows get most of their nutrition from the products of bacteria digesting the food that they eat. When a cow gets sick, the pH of her rumen may change, and the bacteria die. One way to help the cow get better faster is to reach inside the rumen of a cow like the one shown, grab a bunch of yummy fermenting liquid, and then administer it to the sick cow. It does not smell good. In comparison to other cows, the donor cow has a pretty cushy life. She just has to keep eating and keep pooping.

[–]ZombieGrenadier 10 points11 points ago

It does not smell good.

With no first hand knowledge about this subject, I feel like this particular bit might be an understatement.

[–]toomuchpork 2 points3 points ago

keep eating and pooping Isnt this all all cows do?

[–]sabretoothed 2 points3 points ago

And if the picture linked earlier is any indication, leak out the goddamn hole.

[–]OruTaki 93 points94 points ago

To see real time digestion in progress. It has no ill effects on the cow and they don't feel a thing. Pretty cool stuff actually.

[–]layinbrix 213 points214 points ago

We had a professor in our Animal Science department with a goat like this. During the lecture on rumination, he would bring the goat in as a talking point. His favorite thing to do was give the goat a piece of green chewing gum like double-mint or something. Eventually the goat would stop chewing the gum and swallow, so the professor would just pluck it out of its stomach and put it right back in the goats mouth.

[–]IHeartAmber 47 points48 points ago

I want to make a joke about gum with long lasting flavor but I'm really too disgusted to think of anything.

[–]oh_hai_denny 76 points77 points ago

Goodnight, everyone

[–]chud555 60 points61 points ago

                                 DOCTOR #1
                     Stomach contents: One deviled egg.
[He puts it in a kidney bowl.]
                                 ZOIDBERG
                     Deviled egg?
[He eats it. The doctor pulls it out again.]
                                 DOCTOR #1
                     The same deviled egg.

[–]fuckinDEAD 148 points149 points ago

what

[–]whoami9 95 points96 points ago

It's like 1 animal centipede.

[–]ImSofaKingWeToddit 25 points26 points ago

It's like a fucked up version of the everlasting gobstopper!

[–]Pufflekun 22 points23 points ago

Why do I find that absolutely horrifying?

[–]IrrelevantLeprechaun 50 points51 points ago

Because it is absolutely horrifying.

[–]Pufflekun 26 points27 points ago

Oh.

[–]alwayscptsensible 35 points36 points ago

That's fucked up.

[–]chemam 6 points7 points ago

Funniest imagery I've had all day

[–]vteckickedin 5 points6 points ago

I can't stop laughing at this imagery.

[–]dustyfoot 3 points4 points ago

That is the most perfect definition of infinite recursion I can think of.

[–]Entropy 2 points3 points ago

Doublemint indeed.

[–]superatheist95 2 points3 points ago

Did the goat ever blow bubbles?

[–]atheisticJesus 34 points35 points ago

How is it the cows contract no sort of sickness or infection from this?

[–]Centromere 95 points96 points ago

cause your digestive tract is still your "outside". Food is never entered into your body, it always stays "outside". Think of yourself and the cow as a donut.

[–]ForgettableUsername 111 points112 points ago

Only a topologist would tell you that your stomach is on the outside.

[–]son_of_an_obama 70 points71 points ago

"A topologist is just a mathematician that is too stupid to tell the difference between a donut and a cup of coffee."

[–]halkun 13 points14 points ago

This is really, really funny :D

[–]randomsnark 8 points9 points ago

I saw a novelty coffee cup that was made to look like a donut, supposedly to appease topologists. Unfortunately because of the change it was instead topologically equivalent to a pair of shorts.

[–]OatmealPowerSalad 4 points5 points ago

Standard concept in anatomy study. It's counter-intuitive, but the membrane separating the world from our blood vessels dictates where the body begins. You can see this in how the same cell layer in an embryo that forms out skin also forms our digestive tract, donut style.

This is also why, by definition, our colon isn't part of our excretory system. We excrete things that entered our blood, like urine and sweat, but not our poop.

[–]ForgettableUsername 7 points8 points ago

So, you're telling me that, anatomically, excrement isn't actually excrement? You're full of shit.

[–]winesti 8 points9 points ago

Mind = Blown

[–]Sir_Platypus 7 points8 points ago

This is one of the few things I've seen that has actually felt "mind blowing" rather than mildly interesting. I'm now thinking of bodies completely differently.

[–]rckid13 17 points18 points ago

My girlfriend is a vet student and I've stuck my hand into their cannulated cow. She says that they mostly do this to cows that have chronic stomach problems. It's not just to see digestion taking place. It's to prevent the need for repeated surgeries.

The added benefit is that they get to use the cow to teach and study things like digestion but that's not the primary purpose.

[–]ScienceYouMonster 10 points11 points ago

How do the cows not feel a thing?

[–]jackblack2323 6 points7 points ago

we need to do this on humans

[–]Garry_The_Snail 27 points28 points ago

Let's start with you.

[–]Bored 2 points3 points ago

oo me next

[–]freakwharf 12 points13 points ago

It actually did happen to a man in the 1800's. It's discussed at length on this episode of the podcast Radiolab.

http://www.radiolab.org/2012/apr/02/

[–]Evesore 27 points28 points ago

I want one! Instead of eating I'll just pour in the perfect blend of nutrients with the right characteristics to allow optimal digestion. My poops will be so well formed and leave my body with such grace that I'll never need to wipe.

This savings I'll use to buy bacon futures allowing me to afford my childhood dream of purchasing a golden ruby encrusted shitter.

[–]MisterTactful 9 points10 points ago

wat

[–]HannahP945 16 points17 points ago

I have plugged cows near my house! Although they are part of government testing.

[–]bobboobles 48 points49 points ago

Poor word choice.

[–]wrcftw 10 points11 points ago

Guarantee that future hipsters sport these....first stretched ears, then stomach port holes

[–]Peewee223 16 points17 points ago

I don't think cows work that way...

[–]SirAdrian0000 5 points6 points ago

Body worlds. Google it for more pictures, its actually really cool but offends some people skinned cow

Edit: if some one could tell me how to make this link small like everyone else's links I would appreciate it. Edit2: thanks for the help with the link friends. Alien blue doesn't have this help formatting button you speak of...

[–]kristinez 4 points5 points ago

"[ text ]( link )" without the spaces

[–]Perrrin 27 points28 points ago

That room looks familiar, is it in Toronto?

[–]Peregrineeagle 21 points22 points ago

Yep, the AGO.

[–]70000 16 points17 points ago

That would have been a mission to get there, I fell bad for the intern who had to do it.

[–]artacuno53 19 points20 points ago

TREES, HOW DO THEY WORK!?!?

[–]Grimleawesome 7 points8 points ago

carbon in the air sticks to the surface making the tree thicker.

source: purely a guess

[–]GeneralDemus 3 points4 points ago

The cells gain nutrients and divide.

source: purely a guess.

[–]calmateguey 5 points6 points ago

That guy is looking the wrong way.

TURN AROUND, STUPID. IT'S BEHIND YOU.

[–]SaysHeWantsToDoYou 4 points5 points ago

I did this with carrots as a kid. Try it! You can totally eat the outer layers and reveal the original taproot.

[–]drinkthetrees 4 points5 points ago

For anyone wondering, here are some more pictures and information on the AGO's redesign, including this room.

[–]collicam 2 points3 points ago

I'd like to point out that in Italian the suffix "-one" means "large" and "pene" means "penis".

That said, that's quite the wood you have there Signor Penone.

[–]weezermc78 5 points6 points ago

How does that even work?

[–]lovelemurs 8 points9 points ago

I was thinking the same thing, I thought it was just a random tree shape cut out, but then I realised, he probably followed the rings to a certain point, cutting away. And each part is cut to the same ring, which would roughly show what the tree used to look like. The branches seem arbitrary though, you couldn't cut them according to ring depth.

[–]shawarmapolice 28 points29 points ago

Knots == branches swallowed by the expanding tree.

He just follows the knots.

[–]registeredtopost2012 0 points1 point ago

Branches aren't abitrary. I forgot the exact process, but it's extremely labor intensive. Suffice to say, everything inside of the tree is generally the same age.

[–]IsSuchAThingPossible 51 points52 points ago

One time my ex-girlfriend showed me her butthole and said you can count the rings around a girl's anus to figure out her exact age the same way that a lumberjack can do that with a sawed off tree limb.

[–]Lord_Bumberchute 105 points106 points ago

She sounds like a classy broad.

[–]passive_fist 48 points49 points ago

and then when you looked she farted in your face, laughed, and told you she was seeing other guys and left?

[–]Grimleawesome 9 points10 points ago

too soon...

[–]GaryDuder 3 points4 points ago

Why the fuck would a lumberjack look at a tree's anus?

[–]Giantkid 8 points9 points ago

Pics or it never happened !

[–]Kovaelin 7 points8 points ago

Such a thing is not possible?

[–]wazzel2u 8 points9 points ago

"Gotta go to the AGO"

[–]Scooter15 18 points19 points ago

[–]TesticleToe 5 points6 points ago

I've seen this front page at least 10 times. Probably more.

[–]PumpyChowdown 4 points5 points ago

At least once a month. For the last four years.

[–]room505 14 points15 points ago

Yo dawg...

[–]Le_Canadien25 8 points9 points ago

That's the AGO in Toronto, right?

[–]jajajaman 3 points4 points ago

You know where I can find more of his work online?

[–]zseg56[S] 5 points6 points ago

[–]ClydeFans 3 points4 points ago

It's also cool to notice the highly processed wood that forms the adjacent windows. The whole room is design to have a whole 'cycle of life' conversation about it. There are neat things like that all over the AGO.

[–]leathery 3 points4 points ago

When they asked Michelangelo how he made his statue of David he is reported to have said, "It is easy. You just chip away the stone that doesn't look like David."

[–]thousandtrees 6 points7 points ago

This is one of my favourite spots in all of Toronto.

[–]Darthtagnan 7 points8 points ago

What a clever idea, and the result is astounding all the more.

[–]Gouhadouken 0 points1 point ago

i did that with carrots when i was a kid

[–]needs_more_asoiaf 0 points1 point ago

the old gods frown upon cutting the weirwoods

[–]samx3i 0 points1 point ago

Is this a new branch of art?

[–]Joe22c 0 points1 point ago

If there was a sentient tree in that room, I think he'd be pretty horrified at what we've done to his countrymen - the whole goddamn building is wood and then one of his cousins appears to be mutilated as a centre piece.

[–]Yousernaim 0 points1 point ago

Wood you just look at it

[–]consumeradvocacy 2 points3 points ago

THE AGO! (Art Gallery of Ontario)

[–]friendlymaniac 2 points3 points ago

tReee-post!

[–]charnman 2 points3 points ago

This is in the Art Gallery of Ontario. I was working there earlier tonight.

[–]reggaedit 2 points3 points ago

You can see some of his trees in the Tate Modern London:
http://imageobjecttext.com/tag/giuseppe-penone/

[–]DawnOfTheTruth 0 points1 point ago

That is mighty wood.

[–]jonbotwesley -1 points0 points ago

This is a really cool repost. I forgot about this actually. "I ain't even mad"

[–]Vide_Cor_Meum 2 points3 points ago

I do this to carrots.

[–]sprashoo 2 points3 points ago

It's worth pointing out that he didn't literally remove the growth rings to 'reveal' the younger tree's form - he carved a representation of a younger tree inside a larger log.

I assumed the former from the topic title, and was kind of awed, but it turns out that this isn't the case. It's still a neat idea, but less amazing...

[–]maschwa 3 points4 points ago

I wish he could do this to my wife...

buh dum tissss

[–]sparklyteenvampire 10 points11 points ago

It's amazing, but DAE find it uncomfortable that the message seems to be "look at this miracle of nature, which has been destroyed, and whose entire corpse was spent creating art to tell you how miraculous it used to be"?

Edit: I know it might have originally been cut down for something else, jeez. That doesn't change my point, and this still uses up the whole tree.

[–]8litersaday 12 points13 points ago

That's exactly what I was thinking about when I saw it! So beautiful! But so sad. :(

[–]dja0794 10 points11 points ago

tear down the trees... put 'em in a tree museum...

[–]thoriginal 9 points10 points ago

And charge the people the adult or child admission price of the Art Gallery of Ontario just to see 'em.

[–]ucnirf 1 point2 points ago

Miracle of nature... It's a fucking tree. They've been used for art for quite some time now.

[–]dreambmcgee 5 points6 points ago

you don;t know the reason it was cut down. you are assuming this. and you not what assuming does. it makes an....

[–]VernonLittle 2 points3 points ago

I won't be uncomfortable unless I find out it's old growth that was cut down (along with acres of 'undesirable' trees) for the purpose of the art.

If it was a farmed softwood, or otherwise replaced/replaceable tree I'm not too concerned. With most softwood growth, I think we tend to plant more than we cut down, and it grows fast. It's major industry in my country, and we have about a 30 year pipeline.

Tree harvesting is a very renewable resource.

[–]Tetereteeee 22 points23 points ago

I hadn't seen it yet. Upvote for you OP.

[–]TangoZippo 2 points3 points ago

Those were 3 months ago and two were from obscure subs. Sounds kosher to me.

[–]V4DD 0 points1 point ago

It's also not a shitty meme or a facebook quote. Reposting is a little more acceptable when it's displaying something awesome like this.

[–]Hemmels 2 points3 points ago

Not to mention regularly seen on stumbleupon.

[–]Hwk11 -1 points0 points ago

So if I did this to a human...

[–]Infamous_Shinobi 0 points1 point ago

That's awesome, I love shit like this.

[–]apricotqueen -1 points0 points ago

that's what I look like on the inside, underneath all my rings.

[–]apathy-sofa 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for sharing this. I have been studying Penone the past few weeks, and this reminds me of his work "8 Meter Tree" from the late 1960's. You might be interested in seeing it.

[–]nataliaspeaks 0 points1 point ago

Genius.

[–]justapunkrocksong -1 points0 points ago

This is the coolest thing I've seen today.

[–]dudebro_fistbump -1 points0 points ago

How many trees had to die for the rest of that place to be built? Mother of god.

[–]xcforlife -1 points0 points ago

I have a shirt from the AGO, but I've never been there. Got it from the thrift store. True story.

[–]sixeightsix19 -1 points0 points ago

AGO?!

[–]fuckinchucknorris -1 points0 points ago

As he stands there, just another species on Earth.

[–]steak_fried_chicken -1 points0 points ago

yes. this is extremely impressive.

[–]uninc4life2010 -1 points0 points ago

How in the hell did they get that tree in the building? WTF?

I like the way a thread about artistic trees derails into one about cows stomachs. Reddit you do me proud.
